Tomas Vokoun and the Post Lockout Opening Night Horrors

2005: vs. SJS, 22 saves/24 shots in 59:58

2006: vs. CHI, 25/32, 58:29 (he gave up six on 34 shots in his next game, then two goals over his next three games combined)

2007: vs. NYR, 20/25, 60:00 (he gave up four on 24 shots in his next game, then a shutout in his third game)

2008: vs. CAR, 18/25, 59:27

2009: vs. CHI, 52/55, 65:00

2010: vs. EDM, 10/13, 59:04

2011: vs. TBL, 23/28, 64:57

Total: 3-4-0, 4.50, 842

The amazing thing was that he wasn’t pulled from any of those games.

So it’s a documented fact that Vokoun starts out slow. And last year showed Neuvirth not only brings it the first month, but shut out the Pens twice during the season.
Two points is two points. Give Vokoun games 50+ games over the season, but Neuvy should have the Pens.

And the first goal went right off Green. I’d say he had two really bad goals, but made up for at the end of the regulation and in OT. Some of those stops he had on the 4-3 were amazing. And he looked great in the shootout.

I think Vokoun will have the lock on the starting goalie position here, and if he ever falters then we know we have Neuvirth to fall back on. Washington should be more worried about the play of Ovi and Backstrom, than their goaltending situation.

reading Vokoun’s comments again made me back off him a bit. It’s rare you see an athlete come out and sound sincere when they admit how poorly they played. Without watching the video it’s tough but the vibe I got was he almost seemed embarrassed by his performance and he knows he let the fans down. I still think he’s got great value at (last check) 18-1 for the vezina, you know if betting were legal and all.

by Beakers Lab on Oct 11, 2011 8:11 AM EDT reply actions

I watched the video and agree. He was totally sincere, very humble and gracious. First thing he said in the clip was that the win showed the character of the team. “They won the game, essentially, without goaltending…” He was very mature and had no excuses.
I was very disappointed with him during the game, but when the fans around me were angrily yelling and mocking him, I was more disappointed with them. Give the man a chance. He is a proven great goalie and he showed himself in OT and shoot out.

by KSR17 on Oct 11, 2011 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, he was awful in regulation last night, not tracking the puck, out of position. BUT, in OT and the shootout he was great. The sign of a solid vet, he didn’t panic and totally fall apart & he saw his team keep him in the game. When it was time for him to step up he did. I’m taking a deap breath and being patient. BTW, Rolo had some bad floppy moments, too.

I appreciated BB’s recognition of Vokoun’s mental strength to shut TB down in OT and the SO fter playing so horribly in regulation.

Count me among those curious to see how Boudreau’s methods evolve over the course of the season, and how he manages things like games, ice time and special teams time in accordance with player performance.

“Accountability” seems to be this season’s “Stay Angry”, and that turned out to be a farce. So yeah, count me among those curious as well. Thursday against the Pens should be the perfect test.

by skyywise on Oct 11, 2011 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Really. It looked like Musical Chairs on the PP before. Each bench had guys climbing back and forth over the boards trying to match up lines against each other. TMM looked like a continuation of that…a little confusion.

by Goaliemama on Oct 11, 2011 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

They also only had two Caps on the ice for a while when they should have had 3 during Semin’s penalty in OT. Finally Schultz went out there but it took forever. I sit in the section behind the bench and all the players were standing up staring at each other but I didn’t see anyone with any urgency to get on the ice. Then they had 5 men on the ice right after that when the penalty ended. Very poor management.

TV came up sorta big when the chips were down, in OT.

Also, it’s pretty hard to assess effort in a Goalie, but AO definitely had a few real lazy shifts.

Finally, if you’re going to take your option to skip a skate or practice, it would behoove you to skate hard during the game.

In sum, the optics are a lot worse for AO.

Well if people are going to start running articles about accountability, how about the 21+ minutes of ice time Ovie got last night? I know, a lot of it was on the PP. How well did that work?

The day Ovie sees less than 20 minutes of ice time, I’ll start buying the accountability stuff. MJ90 getting benched for one game, however, does not a culture change make.

Agreed wholeheartedly, though I will add that a coach needs to know what buttons to push – with some guys it’s the carrot and with others the stick. So credit to BB for lighting the fire under MJ90, though I agree that if it’s not applied across the board, it ain’t accountability.

If you’re talking about right at the start of the second period after Tampa’s second goal, they didn’t miss a shift, they were back on less than three minutes later after one shift each by the other three lines. If you’re talking about the first half of the third period when the care bears line was put out after the Tampa power play and was on for Tampa’s third goal, they did get skipped as the lines went 4, 3, 2, 4, 3 before they came back out (first line, not care bears).

Chimera

Small sample size, yada yada yada, but …

Through two games, Chimera has 10 shots or 5 per game. His career NHL avg is 2 shots per game. 5 per game I’m sure is unsustainable but maybe he can get that up to 3 per game. With his 9.2% career shooting percentage, that equates to about 22 goals. Maybe he can be that 20 goal scorer he asserts he is.

Related, Alan May took credit on the broadcast for tellilng Chimera to get the puck on net more this season. (He also referred to Chimera as the second fastest skater to come out of Calgary, which was pretty funny — May presumably being the fastest.)

As bad as Vokoun was in the first 60 minutes he at least redeemed himself in the extra portion of this contest. It would have been nice if Alexander Ovechkin could say that as well but the Gr8 was downright awful in this one. He made mental mistakes and worse yet he had an atrocious shift in the third period after coming out of the penalty box that led to the Bolts fifth goal. Ovechkin had a chance to generate some offense on that shift but basically just gave the puck up in the Bolts zone allowing Tampa to come the other way and create the pressure that led to the go ahead goal. Ovechkin does not want to watch the videotape of that shift because it will show his total lack of effort in both the offensive and defensive zones. In addition, he and Mike Green didn’t think on a 5 on 3 and allowed Pavel Kubina to get a shorthanded breakaway when he came out of the box in the second period. Overall Alexander the Great was -2 with just three shots on goal in 21:47 of ice time. What makes this performance even more disconcerting is the team captain opted out of the morning skate. Unacceptable move and performance from the guy who is supposed to lead the team

Of course not. But that it’s even a question – that it’s not clear cut that your best players should be the ones deciding games – is whack. Essentially it’s set up so a different skill set than the ones that are important for the first 65 minutes are important there (other than goaltending, obviously). Stupid. But we needn’t go into “shootouts suck” here.

Tampa is an extreme case, but the fact that Hendricks shoots first for the Caps should make it clear that it is a joke.

by Doncosmic on Oct 11, 2011 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Hendricks was 50% (3 for 6) in the shootout coming into last night game. That compares pretty favorably with the 33.3% league average conversion rate since the lockout, and against the Caps 27% conversion rate since the lockout.

That’s 15% better than the next best guy in a Caps jersey last night. Only 4 other players in the NHL are 4 for 7 or better having taken 7 or more shots in the SO.

Thus, I’m not sure rolling Hendricks out there is evidence of the Caps taking the SO lightly. The evidence seems to point to the contrary.

I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

by iwearstripes on Oct 11, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

It isn’t evidence of the Caps taking the SO lightly, but is evidence that it’s a random skill tangentially related to the rest of the hockey game that’s deciding the game.

It’s an individual skills competition. Like Doncosmic said, Hendricks is out there. In this particular area of hockey, Hendricks is better than Ovechkin. The only player I can think of offhand that has “regular” hockey skills that match shootout hockey skills is Datsyuk.

So, in essence, Detroit bias.

However the league is a business and if the money showed that the shootout wasn’t helping that, it would be gone.

I think Semin’s hockey skills match up pretty well with shootout skills. He might not be able to use his insane, falling backwards, pretty much unstoppable if it actually goes on net wrister much in the SO, but his stick handling translates nicely.

I laughed while watching the replay last night. He got Rolo to think poke check, and change his grip, but Semin was moving so fast the check never even got off (not that I would think a goalie poke check would ever be effective against Semin). So when Semin went stick-side, he couldn’t even try to contest the actual shot.

Mmm… I call small sample size on Hendricks. Not because his move isn’t great (it’s fantastic), but because, as far as we know, it’s his only move. As soon as he’s been scouted on the shoot-out, I’m afraid he’s going to lose all effectiveness. (Maybe he can still be effective if he occasionally shoots on that move; we’ll see.)

I could be wrong, but I think he’s finished that move to the backhand as well as the forehand side. So it’s essentially two moves.

If goalies stop biting on the fake he’ll have to actually shoot it a time or two at the point where he fakes the shot. Then it would become 3 moves.

Meh, not if you have shootout specialists and studs that have a poor history of SO scoring. But that’s not the case in TBL (MSL is really good at it and Thompson took his first ever).

Maybe, just maybe, Boucher decided that a) his stars had a chance with a PP to end the OT period and b) they had played like shit all night so c) it was worth potentially losing ONE regular season point to send a message to his star players that they have to be better. Why anyone would want to send that kind of message is beyond me, quite frankly.

Right, but I don’t have a huge problem with that. I don’t think AO should take as many SO attempts (certainly not like Bykov thinks…) because he’s not that successful at it. That he was (formerly?) the most dominant player on the team at real hockey isn’t that persuasive to me. Jussi Jokinen is an average player, but he has probably been the best SO guy on his team every year. The two skill sets aren’t the same, to me. It obviously looks bad to have Stamkos on the bench, but I’d guess his career SO% isn’t great. The only thing I really quibble with is that Boucher let Thompson take his first ever SO. But who knows, maybe that was reward or maybe Thompson has been killing it in practice.

Right. I get it. I’m just torn between “the shootout is ridiculous” and “if I’m going to lose, I’m going to do it with my best players.” Ultimately, a coach needs to give his team the best chance to win given the rules that are in place, so it’s hard to blame Boucher, I suppose.

About those shootout selections for TBL. Since the NHL began that thing in 2005-2006, Dominic Moore had take all of one shootout attempt in his career until last year. It happened to be in that 15-round shootout between the Caps and Rangers in November 2005 (for the record, Moore skated in Round 9 for the Rangers; his shot was saved by Olaf Kolzig). That was it until last season. But he was 3-for-6 last year.

As for Nate Thompson, I could find nothing to indicate he ever took a shootout attempt in his NHL career.

So, I get Moore. He’s had some success (hey, who thought Matt Hendricks would be a whiz at this?…3-for-5 in his career). I don’t get Thompson. But then again, Victor Hedman took more attempts (6) than either St. Louis or Lecavalier last season (five apiece)

According to the quick numbers I put together from nhl.com, MSL is 6/29 in his career in the shootout, or a 20.6% for his career, and four of those goals came in 2006-7.

Vinnie is 12/48, 25%

Stamkos is 4/21, 19%. The confidence intervals on those are pretty wide, mind you, but I bet Boucher’s seen them enough in practice to know that they aren’t his best shootout players. Those numbers are worse than league average, every one.

Perhaps it unavoidable echos the human/athlete/robot discussion above, but a flight around the globe tends to drain a person. Then to go play in a professional sports the next day and again two days after that. Yes, an athlete should have better stamina and be able to recover quickly, but everyone needs some recovery time.

We all know Ovi is motivated and will skate his heart out. I think he’s not had enough recovery time yet, so passing on morning skate seems to be the smart decision in my book.

by Rob Parker on Oct 11, 2011 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

But your comment did encourage me to look at this list, which is very revealing.

Girardi and Campbell (just 1 game) by far lead the league in average time on ice. Both of those guys are currently the only good defenseman on their respective teams. If you’re betting on anyone to drop off over the course of the year, the Rangers and Panthers are good bets if they keep overworking those guys.

The peloton is 2:00+ behind those two guys, and it makes me happy to see no Caps’ players at the top of that group or even on this list at all.

One name that caught my eye is Letang. On a team with Martin and Michalek, you’d think he’s up way too high, but then you look and see that Lovejoy’s getting 13:09 and Engelland is getting 15:35 per game. Getting Orpik back will help, but still — Pittsburgh has to be one of the least deep teams in the league. They can’t fill out two lines with wings around Crosby and Malkin, and their D gets very thin very fast. At least they have three world-class centers who are in there every night making life hard for the opposition…
(and yes, their backup goaltender is pretty good and a very nice guy)

"Fais gros comme moi!" - Alex Ovechkin

by Gould Old Days on Oct 11, 2011 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree with almost all your points. My only disagreement is on the comment about NYR. Girardi is obviously getting a ton of ice, but I don’t think he’s the only good D on the team. I’m not sure how Sauer and McDonagh have looked so far, but I think those guys can play. And, obviously, when Marc Staal recovers that’s another very good D on the team. Torts just loves matching and hates playing anyone he doesn’t trust. It looks like Girardi and McDonagh are getting ridden hard, and the bottom pair is getting the PIT treatment over in NYR.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

Nothing wrong with fighting Curtis Glencross, but the referees gave Malkin a gift by calling it a roughing minor. His jersey wasn’t tied down, and a fight would’ve had him tossed. That doesn’t help him, or the team.

by j762 on Oct 11, 2011 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

First reaction is that they’ve been burned for two PP goals, two soft goals and one fluke, so it’s pretty tough to start drawing hard conclusions.

That said, the system so far has not screamed out “trap” to me. Both TBL and CAR had pretty clear skating though neutral at times. Semin’s goal against CAR came after he blew the zone aggressively. Both games featured pretty hard forechecking (or attempted forechecking) from basically all the lines.

by fat_daddyo on Oct 11, 2011 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions

In the neutral zone I don’t think I saw the Caps use a trap whatsoever last night. They really didn’t need to, since TB doesn’t really push the tempo off the rush and the Caps had them hemmed in their own end much of the night with an effective forecheck.

Unleash the Apathy.

Watch the Bolts’ 3rd goal. See how Ovie is standing way down in the slot? Two years ago or at the start of last year, he’d never have been there – he’d have been up closer to the off-side point man. Now, he’s down in the slot. If only he’d actually picked up Moore rather than just stand there. . .

Beyond that, there were several times where both Ovie and Semin were below the goalline in their own end, which was almost unheard of prior to last year. The forwards are sagging lower and the D are putting less pressure on the puck behind the net and focusing more on blocking shots and guarding the front of the net. Rather than having the D and the center solely responsible for everything below the dots, the wings are helping out. This allows the C and D to collapse a little more toward the net.

Unleash the Apathy.

Perreault in the Dot

I was extremely frustrated last night when I saw 85 lining up for (and losing) a defensive zone draw in the 3rd period. You’d figure on a line with Halpern (56.9% last year) and Hendricks (53.1%) that wouldn’t be the case – but it was. Why why why why why why why why.

by Alex Reed on Oct 11, 2011 11:46 AM EDT reply actions

Yes, MoJo drew a penalty on his up-ice rush and Halpern got a nifty scoring chance on his, but that probably wasn’t what Boudreau drew up on the whiteboard before the game.

Mackan was actually busting the 1-3-1 with speed up the middle all game. He got his goal that way and that line drew a penalty that way.

Obviously, this is all speculation.

by Rob Parker on Oct 11, 2011 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

It was fun to watch, but he also turned the puck over several times with the same move. After the first period, it was obvious that the game plan was dump and chase. Once you back the D off – sure, go ahead and carry the puck. . . It just looked like they abandoned the game plan once the scoring went nuts.

While I agree on just about all counts, substantively, I have a hard time getting worked up about it on October 11, when the captain just played two games in three nights after flying half-way around the world to bury a family member (among other mitigating factors).

Excuses? Yeah, they are. And I know that Bruce is fond of saying that the only things that are free in this world are bad habits, so the accumulation of ‘em (or inability to break existing ones) is troubling, no doubt, and frankly, I don’t expect things to change much based on what’s come before it. All that said, maybe it’s just a personal coping mechanism, but I’ll still reserve judgment some and not let myself get too concerned until this shit’s happening after the new year.

I hear you. I saw this offseason as GMGM doubling down on BB – essentially saying that the failure was one of the players and not the coaches. Then they shipped out a bunch of role players and brought in a bunch of new ones. Experience in net! Experience on D! Grinders! North Americans! Accountability!

And it looked the same. All the way down to the too-many-men penalties.

Yep – same shit, different season. I wrote in the ’Canes recap:

But what the Caps could demonstrate in 2011-12’s Game One – and what they can show in each of the next 81 games as well – is a superior work ethic, a killer instinct, discipline and an attention to detail. On Saturday night, they really didn’t perform terribly well in those areas, but the result was a 4-3 overtime win nonetheless (courtesy of a Mike Green power-play goal), which shouldn’t be surprising – this team has enough skill to be in every game, regardless of whether they playing well or not. And when they’re not, the result on most nights will be a coin flip… in the regular season, that is.

I think that essentially captures what you’re talking about. And yet, I blindly have faith that the movie will have a different ending this time around…

I’m just disappointed to watch this. I actually feel bad for guys like Ward, Laich, Chimera, Hendricks, Alzner, Carlson, Knuble and so forth (time will tell on Brouwer). They’re doing the right thing. Laich finally looked like the player that his words always suggested he thought he was. Watching Ward was like watching Boyd Gordon with skill and size. He does all the “little things” correctly.

These guys are being let down by a core group of players and a coaching staff that can’t seem to get its shit together.

A little early to push the “We will fail in the playoffs” button, IMO.

If TV hugs the post a little better, this game doesn’t get to OT. The team seems like they have scored more screened/dirty goals in these past two games than they did all season, which is a positive. Lines 2-4 have played very well..

IMO, clearly the PP needs to do better than 0-7 and 52 and 44 need to get on the same page. Again, two games into a long season.

What about this game looked any different than any of the 328 that preceded it over the last four years? I’ve been pushing the “this team is going to fail in the playoffs” button for a long time, and I’ll hold it down until I get any evidence that the core of the team or the coaching staff is able to get the tiger to change its stripes.

Do you say the same thing after they win 1-0? I mean, it’s one game against a really good team who punked them in the playoffs. The goalie lets in some softies and it was off to the races for both teams. These things happen.

The difference, IMO, is that they seem to have a solid game plan with their forward lines and d-pairings. What was maddening to me was the constant musical chairs that BB would play with the forwards. I’m sure we’ll see some movement up and down the lines, but perhaps not as much useless tinkering.

Also, did you notice how many big asses were in front of Roloson all night long? On Brouwer’s goal I’m pretty sure Rolo got a got idea of what Ward had for lunch. Lots of talk about bakery trips and dirty goals, this team seems to actually skate the talk (except on the PP it seems).

In addition, Tampa got the lead late on Thompson’s goal. Went into the 1-12-1 trap they play. DIdn’t take long for the Caps to get through it, did it? Would that have happened last year or would 19, 8, 28, 52 tried to go 1 on 5 and give up the puck?

Believe me, I’m as aprehensive as anyone about how this team will play when it counts. Seen it too many times. But I’m not going to form my opinion on that based upon two games to open the season.

No. It’s two games. The Carolina game was pretty much the same story.

The difference, IMO, is that they seem to have a solid game plan with their forward lines and d-pairings.

Did they stick with that game plan? Not really. Did they have a solid game plan for the PP? Nope.

Also, did you notice how many big asses were in front of Roloson all night long?

Yes. I did. It was great. But this team won’t win if its best players aren’t its best players. Ward, Laich, Chimera, Hendricks, Brouwer – all good stuff. And all ultimately meaningless if the consistency and effort aren’t there from Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Green and the coaching staff.

I’m of the same mind-set. The last two games are perfect examples of everything that has been wrong with the Caps throughout Boudreau’s tenure. I almost wish they’d lost the last two games so all the feel good crap would go away. It’s sloppy hockey. It’s really sloppy.

Two too many men penalties in one game? That’s a problem. Ovie looking listless? That’s a problem.

And I look at this as a continuation of last season and the three before that. So far, it’s all the same.

Despite loving me some Chimera and Hendricks, I also don’t bank on them scoring at this rate, either. Nothing I’ve seen from Ovechkin suggests that he’s broken his bad habits offensively. Nothing I’ve seen from Backstrom suggests that he’s capable of pushing Ovechkin’s play to another level or fundamentally altering the pace of the game when he’s on the ice. Nothing I’ve seen from Semin suggests that he’s ever going to quit taking stupid penalties and mentally checking out of games. Nothing I’ve seen from Green suggests that he’s able to make the right decision with the puck on the PP with consistency – the zone entries were horrendous and that’s very much his bailiwick.

Yes, the core’s performance is likely unsustainable. At the same time, given what we’ve seen from this team over the last four years and given all the talk of accountability and veteran leadership and grittiness and all that crap, how can you not be disappointed to see the Caps essentially come out and pull the same exact shit that they’ve been doing for years? While the Flyers have made some very good decisions in going from being very bad to being very good, I do question many of their spending decisions, such as too many years for Pronger (and stuck with the contract as it falls in the 35 and up category) and the fact they spent so much for Bryz where they had to get rid of important people.

They have a good scouting department but they’ve traded away lots of picks. The fans on BSH have made comments on that.

Giving this one a rec for eloquence.

My concerns about the top line are part of the record, so I won’t rehash them here.

On the plus side of the ledger, I thought the emphasis was not on scoring in transition or off the rush, but on getting the puck in the zone, often deep in the zone, and getting extended zone pressure. Chimera’s first goal came after the first line (I think) had an extended shift in the O Zone and TBL could not get a full change executed before the third line took the puck in neutral and headed for the net. Chimera’s second goal came after a turnover forced by hard forechecking.

I saw some glimpses of the old, bad caps – pulling up at the blue line and dangling, for instance. But it wasn’t as pervasive as it has been.

Guys also went to the net regularly to create traffic.

All to say that it wasn’t completely horrible all the time. I’m holding out hope that we’re looking at baby steps. Maybe.

My take on the Caps two games into the season

There have been a lot of mistakes, but…

Two of the three defensive pairings are new this season. Three of the four lines are new this season. And due to Boudreau not wanting to tip his hand too much in the pre-season, most of them didn’t play together much before the regular season started. And even the top line, which has been well below par thus far, hardly played together in the pre-season, though they should be familiar enough to play better than they have.

After two games, we have four points in the standings.

I expect to see the top line play better. I expect that Ovechkin, Backstrom and Knuble will be better individually. I expect the power play will begin to work, at least to last year’s pace if not back to the prior years. I do not expect Vokoun to have a game that bad the rest of the season, and I expect he’ll still get 45-50 starts this season. I expect the team will be able to keep the workrate and energy up while gelling as a group as they become more familiar with each other.

Do I expect too much? I don’t think so. But here’s something else to chew on. Don’t know about you, but I love the new additions. And I love almost all of the changes. If we get what we expect to from the top line, and if the power play improves (I think it will)… The second line will only get better, esp. with MJ90 in the middle. Just need to work on those faceoffs. But that line has a fantastic mix of punisher, assassin, and playmaker. Everyone talks about Chimera’s speed, but Marjo looks every bit as fast as Chimera when he turns on the jets. The third line may end up my all-time favorite Caps line. Right now they are absolutely owning lines at 5 on 5. I doubt the St. Louis-Stamkos line has ever been dominated like that.

The fourth line, whoever is on it with Halpern and Hendricks, not only looks like it could be one of the league’s better 4th lines, but could rival a lot of team’s thirds, and can play shutdown nearly as well as the third line.

The defensive corps is going to scare a lot of teams. I think you’ll see a lot of team’s overwork their top two pairs vs. Washington beccause any third pairing you stick out there createsa mismatch. In addition, Carlson-Alzner could be one of the very best pairings in the NHL by season’s end.

So, I see a team that needs to work on precision, on cutting the mistakes and on chemistry on ice. Getting comfortable with each other. But you know what else I see? I see a team that, barring injury, could really be scary good by season’s end. The pieces are there, and unlike some, I think BB has it in him.

I don't know, maybe it was the roses...

by Jalabar on Oct 11, 2011 12:56 PM EDT reply actions   1 recs

I was thinking, “this is not just Ovie’s team anymore”, where, when they were down and needed someone to score a critical goal to get them back in, that Ovie had to carry the team on his back. You are right, BB has it in him, although the rush to judge for the TMMOTI penalties will be swift and severe now – both Bouds and Ovie suffer from the weight of their hedonistic and epicureaun excesses expectations on an almost daily basis.
I guess that’s called growing up a bit, and that’s not bad.

Missing: Drifter Pale Ale

I’m putting an APB out to Verizon Center denizens:

What happened to Drifter Pale Ale? It was hands-down the best beer served at the VC last year, and now it’s gone from its customary spot near section 119. I looked around but I couldn’t spot it. I saw a ton of Blue Moon, Red Line and Longhammer IPA taps, but no Drifter. If anyone has seen it, could you please post its new location here? Alternatively, if there are any new craft beer options, could you fill me in? (And no, Shock Top and Blue Moon are not craft beer.)

On another note – why do they change so many of the concessions from year to year? It drives me nuts getting into a rhythm/pattern, then having to spend the first 10-15 games of the following season having to figure everything out again.

Unleash the Apathy.

I didn’t see it. Looks like Dewars has a few new beers but stuff like Blue Moon, Stella and such. Since the price was raised again and it’s a hop skip and a jump from my seats I’m going there from now on.

Comrades, leave me here a little, while as yet 't is early morn:

Hmmm. That’s a bummer. Less beer choice is not the direction I’d hope for. I guess it’ll save me money though.

If you had asked me before the season started when Chimera would hit that 100th goal mark, I would have guessed February. So, congrats to him. But apparently his wife thought last night was the night. From CI:

"My wife mentioned it before I left for the game. She said ‘You should get your 100th tonight.’ I didn’t even know. I thought she jinxed me but she didn’t," Chimera said with a laugh. "It’s just one of those pucks you keep and look back and down the road you can be pretty proud of. It was nice. It’s nice when you have kids – your three-year-old son said, ‘Score a goal for me’ – so you take it to heart. Maybe it’s my good luck charm because you hope they keep saying that."

Ironically, I think it makes sense for BB NOT to juggle forward lines 1 & 2 for a couple games. Let MarJo-Brouwer-Semin develop chemistry and, equally important, keep 8-19-22 together so they will be accountable and have NO excuses for under-performing, i.e. shine the spotlight on them with intensity.

Note to Whiter Mage: I posted this in the recap thread last night, but on the theory that you might have missed it I’m reposting here.

Re. our discussion yesterday of MP85 playing on the 4th line, you turned out to be right and I was wrong. Nice work on that one.

Just wanting to give credit where it’s due.

One game doesn’t prove/disprove that. Beagle may do better long term in the slot. I enjoyed that fourth line, though, for sure.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 11, 2011 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

It shouldn’t be seen as a MP vs. Beagle or, worse yet, a MP vs. MarJo contest. Instead, the issue is that MP deserves to play every night for a while. MarJo HAS to play every night which means MP goes to Beagle’s spot until another forward gets hurt or demoted. If, after 20 or so games, MP has proved (again) that he can’t contribute quality NHL points for a long term, then Beagle slips back in on the first string 4th line.

by Wilderthing on Oct 11, 2011 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Pertaining to our conversation, it does have to do with MP vs. Beagle. We were discussing whether or not you want your fourth line to be a pure grind line, or you wanted MP to join it instead of Beagle for the potential of some spark. It’s an interesting discussion.

I’ll concede more on my argument for Perrault – Tampa’s defense was some garbage. I’ll add more to it with you can match up those three guys against the 5-6 pairing for each team you play and if you do it effectively, I think they’ll be effective.

by Whiter Mage on Oct 11, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

In my opinion, what ‘grind’ is lost with Beagle on the bench is more than compensated with the current make-up of our stellar 3rd line. We therefore can – and should – substitute some of that ‘grind’ (whatever it is supposed to mean) for some offensive upside and energy that MP provides.

by Wilderthing on Oct 11, 2011 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions

There was discussion on this, too. Does MP provide enough offensive upside/energy to justify lowering the level of grind efficiency that Beagle brings? I think he does, but he has yet to prove it.

If he can play like yesterday, then yes. I was surprised – I was all for sitting MP because I didn’t think he’d work on the 4th. I would like to see him as 4W rather than 4C though.

My mind is all twisted like a peanut.

by timmyv38 on Oct 11, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree. Halpy, although not doing too well in the dot, is probably a better draw man and defensive center. MP on the wing allows for greater freedom and offensive creativity, I think

What’s funny about the scoreboard brouhaha is that my neighbor asked me if it was reversed from last year and I said no, it was simply that they changed the backdrop. Because I expect the home team to be on the right. Makes a ton of sense; the home team bench is on that side, too (at least from where I sit, I realize it’s the opposite on the other side of the ice).

Also, last night was game two. I wasn’t at opening night – did they change it from Saturday?

Don’t try to figure Sasha out. Just ride the wave.

Of all GM’s well-regarded moves, I am beginning to think that (not counting the Vokoun bargain basement deal) the Wideman move will turn out to be the best. I am so impressed. He is nails back there, especially on the PP. Not only will he push Green to be even better (and get Ovie off the point, I hope), his play will give Hammer some rest time as well. One interesting implication of his play is how it will affect Carlson’s role, as remarked earlier. Currently, JC is AWOL on the pp when last year, I think he was expected to be – minimally – on the second unit. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

by Wilderthing on Oct 11, 2011 4:01 PM EDT reply actions

I’m fine with JC not getting PP time if it keeps him fresh for all of the toughest ES shifts.

Yeah, I suppose I am too. He has really been superb in his defensive responsibilities. He and Karl really are impressive together. But, on the other hand, I thought he was also being touted as a possible Norris contender at some point because of his offensive production, as well. As I said, this should be interesting to see how this pans out.

by Wilderthing on Oct 11, 2011 4:23 PM EDT up reply actions

The thought is that he could be a Norris candidate – but likely not for a few years. If he develops a better defensive game now, it should make it easier for him in the future.

My mind is all twisted like a peanut.

one of our favorite topics of late: Will Malkin’s Knee hold up all season? So far, that’s a negative, Houston.

Center Evgeni Malkin will not play in the Penguins’ home opener tonight against Florida, coach Dan Bylsma said this morning.

“It’s just soreness,” Bylmsa said. “We do not think it’s anything other than being sore at this point in time.”

Bylsma said that describing Malkin, a former NHL scoring champion and playoff MVP, as day-to-day would be accurate.

Malkin took the ice for the morning skate and did some drills and shooting, but did not participate in line rushes or with the power play.

Another thing that kinda sucks. If he gets himself suspended, whatever, but if he’s hurt, that’s a bummer.
