Semyon Varlamov Named First Star of the Week

Per the NHL: "Varlamov stopped 55 of 56 shots in backstopping the Capitals to a pair of victories, including the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. He began the week stopping 25 shots for his second shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Dec. 28. Named the Capitals' starting goaltender for NHL Winter Classic earlier in the day, Varlamov recorded 32 saves in Washington's 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins in front of 68,111 outdoors at Heinz Field Saturday night. The 22-year-old Samara, Russia native improved his career regular-season record to 26-8-8 in 45 appearances."

Grats Varly!

Third star = Lidstrom. He’s got awesome numbers for a D man this year, 37 pts in 39 games.

But his +/- is 0. Anyone else think that’s kind of disturbing for a team that’s +23 overall?

by Brainumbc on Jan 3, 2011 1:00 PM EST reply actions

I’d be bothered if it wasn’t Lidstrom, but he is Nick Lidstrom so to me, it’s an aberration. Plus he is usually out there against the top opposing forwards, so he may get dinged a little bit that way…

Plus he is usually out there against the top opposing forwards

For that reason, Carlson’s +11 is a nice number for a rookie

by Brainumbc on Jan 3, 2011 1:32 PM EST up reply actions

Lidstrom is getting the toughest QComp metrics of any defenseman as far this season, as far back as the BtN database goes. He’s also getting the most defensive zone starts of anyone on the team while facing that tough competition. He’s not destroying those guys like he used to, but he’s still holding his own, which is saying quite a lot by itself.

Whether Varlamov or Neuvirth get the nod tomorrow, it will be the 82nd decision between them. Their record through 81 decisions so far?… 51-19-11.

And that’s why we need Brodeur, right?

Got pulled again in his last start, didn’t he?

Yeah, we need him.

I thought it was Nabokov or Vokoun or Bryzgalov we needed. Didn’t From the Rink say so?

But ESPN says we need Brodeur, so it must be so! ESPN is never wrong, are they?

Between this and Neuvy getting rookie of the month this season, I’d say it’s high time the Caps trade for some veteran goaltending.

does this change any minds in the #1 long-term goaltender debate?

If the guy who’s hot right now is still healthy in 4-6 weeks, maybe.

"So if I drank a bottle of rum (not really, it was about 2/3 of a bottle) starting at 1p and continuing through the Caps game does that mean I need to do that every Caps game from here on?"

I wouldn’t think so. I think most people have a feeling that Varly will have these dominant stretches, but he’ll also be more inconsistent (at least in part because of injury) and that Neuvy’s highs won’t be as high, but he will be more steady. It’s just a preference of which you would rather have.

The numbers are off in the article, 25-32= 57, so either the total is wrong or one of the numbers they listed for the games is wrong.
