The speculation that the Caps might try to trade for Brodeur makes sense… if they planned to use him to center the second line?

And the ensuing jousting between him and Sean Avery?

…to be fair, he’s allowed far less goals than those four goalies.

I guess the unexpected results from last’s week report was too much to handle, eh?

Some other noon numbers:
16-21-22-25-26-28-83 – linemates with whom Mathieu Perreault has played 75% of his time at even strength.
18 – total number of even strength goals scored by those players in the same period.
6 – number of even strength goals scored by the nominal second line wings – Brooks Laich, Alex Semin, and Mike Knuble – in that same period.
I don’t know how many PPGs the Caps have scored in the same timeframe, but it hasn’t been many. And I don’t really think you can lay all of the blame at his feet when his linemates aren’t producing, either. But it’s still not good.
This same discussion was had sometime last week. While MP doesn’t shoulder all of the blame for lack of production, he shares some of it.

I can think of a lot more great chances that Johansson’s wingers shanked than Perreault. The plural of “anecdote” ain’t “data,” but still, I’m having trouble coming up with any instances of a winger failing to bury what Perreault served up.

Playing with Knuble and Laich is going to have that effect. You’ve got an overlap of similarity.. I feel like I’ve seen the two of them making the ‘assignment’ mistake more than once.. both being used to the PWF role, I’m sure. Having someone like Fehr or Semin to produce shots, at this point, you’d have to imagine it couldn’t hurt?
The bottom two lines have shanked more than a fair share of chances, but the mere fact that they’re generating chances at all has made them look a lot better than their teammates, of late. I can’t wait to see Bradley replace King on the fourth line, but otherwise, the bottom six has looked pretty good?

Just last night Perreault gave Laich a gorgeous feed and Laich put the puck over the net.
Drunk Guy: "Alex Ovechkin is playing more like Magic Johnson than Michael Jordan this year."
Laichitor: "He has AIDS?"
He set Knuble up a couple times too – with the same result.
Matt Bradley: He has sensitive skin, no?
It’s his dogged determination in stealing pucks that I like. Often times I’ll see him continually poking his stick under a scrum and then end up with the puck. He’s not afraid to go to the corners and behind the net, often drawing penalties too (as he did last night).

On the matter of Perreault, 44 games might not be enough to say with certainty that he doesn’t have a future as a top-six forward in the NHL, but there is a disturbing pattern in his tenure with the Caps:
2009-2010:
Called up Nov 4, two points in first game (assists), 2-4-6 in first eight games…0-1-1 in ten games after that.
Called up Mar. 28, goals in first two games, no points in third game (ended his season w/ Caps)
2010-2011:
Called up Oct. 23, two assists in first game, was 2-2-4 in first four games, is 3-1-4 in 19 games since, is working on an eight-game streak without a point. And he’s had one “plus” game in 2011.
Taken overall, he is on a 17-goal pace per 82 games in his career thus far. But it is misleading. It looks more as if he starts strong, then fades.

Kind of Fehrsian, wouldn’t you say?
To be honest, MarJo is creating more scoring opportunities per game now, what with his speed (which Perreault doesn’t lack) and surprise. He had a wraparound attempt in OT that nearly went in on Biron, as well as a couple other chances (as a matter of fact, I thought that wraparound was in the net).
Perreault is waiting for the chances to come to him, I’m afraid.

MarJo is a better skater and much, much more strong than MP. MP comes off the puck with a stiff breeze, and even with MarJo several seasons of NA play the junior of MP he’ll only get more strong on it.
Seconding Brodeur for 2C though. I mean hell, Roy could skate pretty well why can’t Brodeur?
Am I mad, that I should cherish that which bears but bitter fruit?
I will pluck it from my bosom, tho' my heart be at the root.

MattP is too small to endure the rigors of the NHL…..
But really after all this time in the AHL and being called up you’d think he’d be adjusting better than his competitor MJ90. The fact that the two of them are nearly equal in raw stats, except that Mojo is faster, bigger, younger and hasn’t played in a North American sized rink until this year isn’t exactly heart warming for MP85. And as far as billing and stereotyping players, Mojo is a playmaker who scores, and MattyP is a goal scoring center. I do think both players would look a lot better if Good Sasha would show up and play however, Laich and Knuble really doesn’t work together.
All kinds of craziness can happen in the NHL, like Alex Ovechkin not scoring 40 goals or more in a season, but I don’t see Perrault being a top 6 forward.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
I don’t see him as the 2C either (still lighting candles for GMGM to nab Fisher from OTT), but I do think he has the ability to be a good 3C, provided people can get healthy and the constant line-shuffling ends.

Hey, sewer rat may taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know 'cause I wouldn't eat the filthy motherfucker.
The Caps’ play has been pretty disappointing all season. It’s not even like they’re dominating the underlying numbers and just getting bad bounces – they’re essentially a 50% Corsi/Fenwick team with the score tied. The injuries to guys like Tom Poti and Alex Semin aren’t helping that, but this team, as constructed, isn’t a Cup contender.

Which is a pretty severe kick in the nuts after last season’s disappointment, and losing to the Pens in 7.

quite honestly, I’m seriously weighing if I should sign up for postseason tickets at all. Because I know if I do and say “Oh, I’ll sell them!” I won’t sell them, I’ll go tot he games, and I’ll just be pissed off at myself when the Caps, who have no business thinking about June right now, bow out after 7 in the first round AGAIN.
Of course, if I don’t sign up for playoffs, watch, this will be the year. And then I’ll be pissed off at myself for missing it.

True, and it’s baffling given what happened last year. I didn’t even expect another 105+ point season, but it looks like an entirely different team in their sheer inability to dominate territorially for significant stretches of games. A lot of last year’s success came from extraordinary PDO, but it wasn’t this much…
Small sample size.

And then there’s the per game played/ice time comparison with the 512 number.
I worked some numbers the other day comparing Flash, MJ, and MP since I think Flash and MP have played roughly the same number of games at this point for the Caps this season. No earth-shattering findings worth the time spent calculating and comparing – particularly since MP’s games have taken place over a much longer period plus we know MJ is having more success than MP in recent times, and Flash is pretty much irrelevant at this point.

This noon number definitely didn’t surprise me as much as the abysmal record against play-off bound teams.
Unfortunately, at this point in the season, the team’s offensive make-up is quite lacking. Most of our bottom-9 forward spots(2nd, 3rd, 4th lines) are being filled by bottom-6 players(3rd and 4th liners).
For Matty P. to be mildly successful at the 2C position, he would need 2 very talented wingers. MP85 isn’t going to make those around him better at that spot, he needs those around him to make him better. Unfortunately, that’s not what a team should look for at the second pivot spot.
Soon the Championship with be ours, all ours!
I feel like GMGM is keeping Matty P up in order to drive up his value, so he can ship him at the trade deadline for a 2C.
