Have to say I was a bit surprised at how obnoxious the Canuck fans were at the game last night. Not Ranger/Flyer class, but not too far off. I wasn’t in the section where the fight broke out, but a group in the section next to me felt that standing and cheering after a VAN goal wasn’t enough; they needed to turn around, arms up, and taunt the crowd around them (“Yeah, See that?” “That’s how it’s done”). They’re lucky they were at the VC and not 120 miles north.

I was rather surprised at how obnoxious the Canucks fans near me were. Obnoxious, drunk, entitled, conducted themselves very poorly.

I was at the game, as a Canuck fan. I thought all the Caps fans I ran into after the game were very welcoming – I got a few people shaking my hand after and saying “good game”. Then again I try to not be an ass.

We had several asinine Canuck fans around us as well, two females that were incredibly drunk standing up yelling at the Caps fans around them and during the hockey song they turned around screaming..er singing. There were two guys with a sign with some innuendo about Brooks that stood in front of us numerous times and some man who kept saying something about Caps fans getting back on their wagons. Very irritating to say the least.
Sorry you guys had to be near some asshats. Not all of us are like that, and every fanbase has its fools

Oh I know, I’ve met many fans that aren’t that way. I have no problem with fans from other teams being there if they are respectful. I’d never be that way in someone else’s barn.
Are you from Vancouver, by some chance?

That’s the one problem with being the second reply to a post. Hard to know who one’s talking to. (Besides your name indicates Caps fandom.)

Sorry that you were around so many obnoxious Canucks fans. The ones near me weren’t too bad at all. But it seemed like there were an awful lot of them there last night. I would not have thought that the Wash DC area was that big of a haven for Vancouver expatriates. Or are the Caps so much of a disappointment that people around here have switched their allegiance to Vancouver? I know this is a front-running city but….

Directly in front of us last night we had a group that I think were from the Canadian embassy or something. They all had on matching black coats with the Canucks logo on it (they were also awash in Polo but I digress) those guys never made a peep. They didn’t sing, stand, cheer or chant the entire game. They took some pictures, they left at the end of the period and returned shortly before the next one started. Those particular seats (I’m in section 113) always seem to have groups like this in them.
As for fans selling their seats, that’s a sore spot with me. A lot of the people in that section sell their seats on the regular and they sell them to non Caps fans. I get that you might need to sell games here and there but really make a effort to sell to Caps fans!
Section 118 (the one next to mine) seems to also have a lot of fans that sell their tickets a lot as well so there are always lots of opposing fans there. Usually the fans at the aisle there just across from me are rooting for the opposition.

re: Goal controversy?
Glass was out of the play, exiting to the bench. The door was open and he was holding the side…definitely not off sides or too many men on the ice.
Suspend Colin Campbell!
Not the best decision for Green to step up and go for the hit on that play… IMO

Technically, a player exiting the ice is still off side until he has completely exited the playing surface, regardless of whether or no he’s in the play or not.

Yeah. His foot is clearly still on the ice when the puck enters the zone. Blown call, but not enough to get me too fired up given how poorly the Caps played for the majority of the game.

Agreed, a blown call on the empty netter with 40 seconds left isn’t going to get me really fired up… the call on Greenie on a great defensive play pissed me off.

This isn’t the open-netter at the end; it’s the breakaway in the 2nd period. Not only did it turn out to be the GWG, it was right after the Caps had a great fore-checking shift. Very deflating.

Ah hadn’t realized that. In any case, its a technicality. Its not as if the player being off side actually had any impact on the play.

That is seriously the lamest excuse ever. And you’re a ref! It has no bearing whether or not it impacted the play. Offside is offside. There’s no “advantage” or “harmless error” rules like soccer. Plays that have no impact are whistled down all the time.
Drunk Guy: "Alex Ovechkin is playing more like Magic Johnson than Michael Jordan this year."

Given how little a linesman is actually responsible for you’d think they’d get this one right, but if that’s the only bad call an officiating crew makes all night, that’s a pretty good night.
Sadly, the call on Green was way way worse.

Over the years (especially the early ones) the Caps have had lots of lame players, but IMO none as lame and dirty.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
Seems like every time Bruce shuffles the lines he’s back to 8-19-22 by the end of the 2nd period if the Caps don’t have the lead. And this is happening at a point in the season where the offense is really struggling and some things need to be shaken up in order for an offensive explosion to happen. He doesn’t seem to have the guts to go with a mixed combination for long time enough for the lines to actually have a chance to create chemistry.
What lines would I try? 21-90-8 looked good on a few occasions last night when F16 was injured and Ovy was double shifting. Slumping Ovy and Bäckström need to be taken away from each other. And Ovy doesn’t need to play with the best of them to be the best (see Zubov, Clark) and actually does make people around him better. Is him being a LW too sacred in order to try things for more than just 1½ periods? (1b line would of course in this experiment be 28-19-22)
Minor nit-pick; he played with Zubrus, not Zubov. Zubov was one of the best.
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

I would have liked to have seen Bruce stick with 28-19-22 a bit longer, except that 28 is not currently an option.
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
Quick question, since I didn’t see the game last night, were Nicky and Marjo actually together on a line at some point or did they just happen to be together on the ice in the midst of a line change when Marjo’s goal was scored?
Fehr came off hurt and Nicky jumped on.
Drunk Guy: "Alex Ovechkin is playing more like Magic Johnson than Michael Jordan this year."
Laichitor: "He has AIDS?"
So much for the new defensive system. Giving up at least 3 goals a night isn’t very defensive, and yet the offense is still gone. Damn.
-These go to eleven.
The new defensive system doesn’t account for Chimera trying to get fancy at center ice and turning the puck over for a ready made breakaway for Sedin. PP goal and other a nice point shot through some traffic. Of all of those Varly would probably want the first one back, otherwise did a good job keeping us in the game. Not finishing our chances hurt a bunch. Nicky looked more like himself last night but getting stuffed on that breakaway certainly hurts, Green’s rough night included tripping over himself when he was free and clear in the slot.
Not finishing + a big turnover = tough to win.

You’re right Dave, I’m just looking at the bottom line. They gave up 4 to Fla, 3 to TB and now 3 to Van. If the point was to compensate for the lack of scoring by giving up fewer, then they’ve got to keep it under 3 at least. Really need to only allow 1 or 0 with the way they are not scoring. Just frustrated and have no belief in this team. None of us fans really have any reason to believe. They couldn’t get out of the first round 2 of the last 3 years. Can’t win a game 7 at home. I’ve been a fan since 1980 when I first discovered hockey, and I’ve always felt this same way about them, since they’ve never given me any reason to not feel that way.
-These go to eleven.
I’m not worried yet…the only thing that is really troubling to me is the prolonged slumps of Ovie and Nicky. Green is still playing streaky good, streaky not so good. But he has time to get it together. Carlznerson has been tremendous. Honestly the goaltending has been more than good enough. Overall the defense is doing better, you’re going to have stretches where you give up 3+. Realistically we gave up 3 goals in 60 minutes of each of the last 3 games, empty netter is whatevs.
The lack of scoring is the one thing that has been a consistent issue, and that’s the one thing you would have to believe will come around, both the stars scoring and the power play in general. On the whole the defense has been much better. Schultz still looks rusty but I have faith he’ll come around. Hannan has settled in. Once the PP and stars start producing like they should/can, I think we’ll see where we’re really going to be at come April.

He was such a pleasure to watch last night. Particularly on his goal. Didn’t think about it or handle the puck—just bam. He is beginning to look a lot like Nicky from the back too when he’s protecting the puck. I love the Mackan praise from Sedin and others.

Hershey got home early this morning, so I guess that’s why whoever it’s going to be wasn’t at practice this morning. And with a matinee tomorrow, no morning skate. So you’re pretty happy with the way the Caps have been playing since the beginning of December? They’re 3 games over .500 on the season. 7-8-5 since the end of November. Their record indicates mediocrity.
by mechanicsville on Jan 15, 2011 9:42 PM EST up reply actions
Only 6 teams in the NHL have more points. That indicates a better team than mediocre.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Although one team is technically tied with us but has a game in hand. (But, of course, we got had gotten the vast majority of our points back in the Stone Age — before Dec when we were actually a good team.)
Will the real Washington Capitals stand up instead of these imposters that have snatched their bodies? Is it truly the “Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and the Caps’ bodies have been snatched by aliens?
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
(But, of course, we got had gotten the vast majority of our points back in the Stone Age — before Dec when we were actually a good team.)
19 of the Caps 55 points have been since the start of December, and 15 have been in the last 11. That particular stretch has actually been one of the better parts of the season, pointwise. It’s actually better than October, when the Caps had 13 points in 11 games.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
We’ve had one major losing streak, followed by an unbeaten streak which at least brought us to about .500 for the time frame, followed by another (albeit short) losing streak. So our play has been worse since Dec 1 overall. Several of our losses have been OT losses/shootouts so we’ve gained a few points that way.
But, admittedly, the long losing streak and our current recent struggles (over the last 3 games) has many of us gravely concerned. Gee, it appears our mediocre start during October has been forgotten in the mists of antiquity! Yes, I’m guilty for forgetting it as well. Maybe it’s since November was such a wonderful month for the team that it made up for some really poor play. (And usually November is a poor month for the Caps, if memory serves me correctly.)
Rocking the Red for teams on the banks of the Potomac and at the Gateway Arch and Singing the Blues about Hockey.
November was a great month for the Caps – 10-2-2. Everything was going right, with the exception of the two losses (both 5-0 shutouts!!). How we went from 12-2-2 Oct. 30-Dec. 1 to an 8-game losing streak is mind-boggling. It looks like the Caps are starting to get back on track, although they still have a ways to go. Getting the team back healthy will help.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
Let me put it this way. In my opinion, if the Caps continue to play the way they’ve been playing for the better part of two months now, it’s a distinct possibility that they could miss the playoffs.
by mechanicsville on Jan 15, 2011 10:16 PM EST up reply actions
Except the facts contradict you. For the 8 games after the 1st one in December, they were terrible. After the losing streak ended, they’ve been fairly productive pointwise -1.36 pts/game in the standings.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
I might’ve done the math wrong, but it looks like 1.18 pts/game since the losing streak ended. At the risk of repeating myself, I’m not too thrilled with 7-8-5 since the beginning of December. I’m concerned that the next 37 games are going to be a bit of a struggle.
by mechanicsville on Jan 15, 2011 10:43 PM EST up reply actions
It’s 1.36. The Caps have had a 6-2-3 record since then – 15 points in 11 games. The losing streak is the reason for that poor post-November record – no one is thrilled about that. But since then, they’ve held their own. If they continue at the rate they’ve had since the losing streak, they’ll end up with 105 points – easily enough to make the playoffs.
There is no problem a hammer cannot either fix or make irrelevant.
My bad, failed to give the Caps a couple of their charity points for otl’s. Let’s hope that the team gets healthy, BB is patient enough to leave lines together for more than a couple shifts at a time, that BB implements both an effective breakout and offensive zone entry, and that the PP succeeds at a better than 10%, and that GMGM trades for a solid 2C. Just seems like a lot of stuff that needs fixin’. I remain hopeful, but confidence is waning.

# Reports from Russia indicate that Evgeny Kuznetsov may move from Traktor to St. Petersburg SKA if Traktor falls out of Gagarin Cup playoff contention. [All Hockey.ru via GoogleTrans]
I wonder how this affects the chances of a buyout. McPhee seemed like he was hinting that direction, as well as Kuz and Orlov interviews, but SKA St. Petersburg seems less likely to accept a buyout on a top young talent than a cellar-dwelling team like Traktor Chelyabinsk.

There’s a ton of political stuff in Russian hockey. I’m not going to try to untangle the mess. With both Orlov and Kuz I’m at the point of “we’ll see when we see.” I still hold hope that they’ll both buy out and go to the AHL, but I think that’s the least likely scenario (well, maybe both making the NHL is less likely).
Drunk Guy: "Alex Ovechkin is playing more like Magic Johnson than Michael Jordan this year."
Laichitor: "He has AIDS?"
Talking about Kuznetsov – his ice time have increased since he got back from WJC. In Traktors game against Torpedo today he was on the ice for more then 18 minutes and had an assist, 5 SOG and was +2.
Orlov was +1 in his game today and had 13.57 in TOI. Five other defenders on his team had more ice time then he had.
For me Peter Forsberg is not just my favorite hockey player he is the reason I fell in love with hockey.
So the “saving it for the playoffs” argument has always seemed like a crappy excuse to me. But I just realized that the players who have performed the best have generally been the ones who are new and/or young and haven’t dealt with the recent playoff disappointments. The stars from last night’s game were Carlson, Alzner, Mackan, and Hendricks, none of whom would have had the mindset to save it for April.
Actually, Carlson played for the Caps in the playoffs last year, and then for the Bears after the Caps were eliminated.

"I'm not going to tell!"
Well can you at least guarantee fifty?
"No way. I have a different objective. To win."

So I’m watching the Hurricanes tonight. They’ve put up 2 against Roloson in the first. Doesn’t look all that f*king hard.
-These go to eleven.
Caps will have another chance or two to show you again how difficult they can make it.

Did you know there’s a discussion about the other games being played going on here?
"I would feed them lefts until I was pretty much tired of doing it." - Alan May, JRR, 10.16.2010

![Via Traktor Chelyabinsk's website, here's Evgeny Kuznetsov graciously accepting a handmade hat from some of his fans.
The Traktor fans were aware of the NA tradition of the hat trick, and in honor of his strong performance at World Juniors, they made him one of his very own:
"It is known that the ocean [overseas leagues - ed.] has a tradition: after the execution of a hat-trick fans throw on the ice caps. Hat-trick in a literal translation - "hat trick". Kuznetsov played in the World Cup just two such trick: in the group stage, he scored 3 goals in the gate the Latvian team, and in the semi-finals three times, struck the gate of Canada. These two points are noted."
