any reason Carlson isn’t on the rookie team?
But still.. where did the lighter fluid come from?

Too many guys, not enough spots. I’m sure he’ll be there as a real All Star soon enough
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
It’s hard not to call bullshit when all of the D are both Western Conference and also less impressive statistically than RAHJC.

I’d put RAHJC in the regular game over Dan Boyle, that’s for doggone sure.

The rookies only participate in the Skills Competition and for that part of the festivities, every team needs to be represented.
by JimCareyFanClub on Jan 11, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions
My guess is that it has to do with the fact that four teams got rookies only - no All-Stars – so that limited the number of available rookie spots.

I don’t see how Ekman-Larsson had any chance of getting on this roster. Most fans have no idea who he is, and I’m pretty sure he either spent as a healthy scratch or in the AHL. I thought Subban and/or Carlson were givens for this.
Does every team have to be represented? If that is the case, I would have thought Doan would get the nod ahead of him.
Yes, but that would require bumping a “real” All-Star. This way, they can appease PHX (sorta) without screwing a deserving All-Star.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well they could just bump Hemsky off the team and then they won’t have to worry about screwing a deserving player.

The Oilers already have Eberle and Hall in as rookies, so they didn’t need to put Hemsky or Whitney in the game. Whitney would be more deserving, but he still sucks.

I think they have.. said somewhere that the Sedins are playing against each other for the first time
They’re being picked on the 30th on Versus, I think?

They should be allowed an off-the-board pick of players not in the 36, just for funsies.

That owuld be so much better. Let the league pick two captains and have them pick from the whole league. Imagine the rivalries between players and teams that would create.

Ovechkin was making it if he had 5 goals this year.
Everyone looks at Green and sees scoring, but I know that his defense this year combined with any scoring would have gotten him there this season (were he looked at as a normal defenseman like everyone else, which he isn’t).
Backstrom is having a down year in points.. whatever. Semin should have been there had he not gone invisible the last month+.
Only one I’m irked about is Carlson. For some reason there’s 9 forwards and 3 defenseman (3:1 vs the 2:1 split of the regular all stars). I’m glad Dadonov earned a spot. He’s 3-7-10 in 14 GP. For anyone curious, Perreault 5-3-8 in 15 GP and I wouldn’t even consider him for this rookie nonsense.
Too bad voting didn’t end November 30.
Sincerely,
A. Semin

Oh Sasha, 10% of a new 12M contract is double the 10% I earned on your current 1 year $6M contract. How’s about you worry about scoring goals and I worry about the math. Would also be nice if you had some personality so I could have had you in the ceiling instead of Varly. MIght have led to some endorsement deals.

So why does everyone think Green got in this year and not in years past?
If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they'll kill you.
Green has been a Norris candidate the past 2 years, but nothing really odd about why not an all-star.
2 years ago, in his 30 goal season, he put up most of those points in the second half of the year, after voting ended (he had 10 goals at this time of year).
Last year, the Olympics were held instead on an all-star game. He likely would have made that team if it was played.
In the 30 goal year they had the Habs voting thing, and all starters were PIT/MTL/ANA/DET IIRC.

Glad to see Green finally getting some recognition for his play the past 2 1/2 years. Ovechkin is a no-brainer. Sure he’s not having an Ovechkin year, but he’s still 11th in scoring in the NHL, leading the Caps, and he would be leading 22 other teams in scoring as well.
Part of the All-Star game is recognize players having a good year this year, and part of it is to recognize greatness over a player’s entire career. The NHL made some good choices this year. Now the fun begins as the players vote for captains and alternates…

jesus, we’re spoiled. “AHHHHH! Ovie’s having a bad season!” Oh, he’d only be leading 22 other teams. Perspective, I like it. Thanks, Mike.

I guess 100 points and 30 goals in a season doesn’t qualify as all star when your making another all stars job that much easier
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
that’s what happens when you let fans vote. Pens fans are nothing if not obsessed about voting their guys in year after year.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
No one voted for rookies though right? Because Carlson should be the only rookie pressing Logan couture Or that guy from Carolina for Calder

right, rookies were selected like the rest of the all-star team is selected: by NHL Ops.
BUT, the NHL decided that rookie reps could count towards every team being represented. So we ended up with some rookies who probably aren’t the top rookies being named so their teams would have a rep, rather than “wasting” a spot on the actual All-Star roster with a “every team has to have one representative so you’re the pity selection” player.
there’s good and bad to it.
Still, I think they should scrap the fan vote entirely. it’s such a joke. It’s a bigger joke than MLB all-star voting (and I will happily admit to being an old school ballot box stuffer. I love punching out those little chads and trying to vote in every single National).
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
NFL is some combination of fan and player vote I think. That would alleviate the ballot stuffing effect.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I’m wavering on Malkin, but I sure as hell don’t think he’s the third best forward in hockey, which is where the fans voted him.
Every year, there’s people, either voted by fans or selected by hockey ops so every team is represented, who don’t deserve to be there. Heck, I’m not even sure Mike Green deserves to be there this season. That’s a bit of a make-up pick, imo.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
All-Star games should be about who the fans want to see, the best players in the league, regardless of how they’re doing.
I think Kovalchuk would’ve been great in the game. Same with Semin and Backstrom. Because they would’ve made it more entertaining to watch.
I think we have very different ideas of what the all-star game should be.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
fleury and duncan keith both.
keith has two more points than doughty (despite doughty missing ~2 weeks with a concussion). doughty didn’t make the cut at all, nonetheless as a starter.

Katie has some reactions up from Ovie and Green on CI.
“I hope I’m going to stay on the same team as Greenie, because I don’t want to hit him hard,” Ovechkin said with a laugh after Washington’s morning skate at BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla.
“There’s no hitting in the All-Star game,” Green quickly replied.
Pledge Drive 2010-2011: SO KIDS CAN!! Help build a playground
i’m a little bit surprised OV made it.
has he really been one of the best players in the league this year?
eh. Although he’s still 12th in scoring.

yes
Leads the caps in points. Has huge hits numbers. Probably up there in shots leaguewide. And one of the most marketable and recognizable faces in the game.
