The rookies only participate in the Skills Competition and for that part of the festivities, every team needs to be represented.

by JimCareyFanClub on Jan 11, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions

My guess is that it has to do with the fact that four teams got rookies only - no All-Stars – so that limited the number of available rookie spots.

I don’t see how Ekman-Larsson had any chance of getting on this roster. Most fans have no idea who he is, and I’m pretty sure he either spent as a healthy scratch or in the AHL. I thought Subban and/or Carlson were givens for this.

by DrinkingPartner on Jan 11, 2011 12:16 PM EST up reply actions

Ovechkin was making it if he had 5 goals this year.

Everyone looks at Green and sees scoring, but I know that his defense this year combined with any scoring would have gotten him there this season (were he looked at as a normal defenseman like everyone else, which he isn’t).

Backstrom is having a down year in points.. whatever. Semin should have been there had he not gone invisible the last month+.

Only one I’m irked about is Carlson. For some reason there’s 9 forwards and 3 defenseman (3:1 vs the 2:1 split of the regular all stars). I’m glad Dadonov earned a spot. He’s 3-7-10 in 14 GP. For anyone curious, Perreault 5-3-8 in 15 GP and I wouldn’t even consider him for this rookie nonsense.

Green has been a Norris candidate the past 2 years, but nothing really odd about why not an all-star.

2 years ago, in his 30 goal season, he put up most of those points in the second half of the year, after voting ended (he had 10 goals at this time of year).
Last year, the Olympics were held instead on an all-star game. He likely would have made that team if it was played.

In the 30 goal year they had the Habs voting thing, and all starters were PIT/MTL/ANA/DET IIRC.

Glad to see Green finally getting some recognition for his play the past 2 1/2 years. Ovechkin is a no-brainer. Sure he’s not having an Ovechkin year, but he’s still 11th in scoring in the NHL, leading the Caps, and he would be leading 22 other teams in scoring as well.

Part of the All-Star game is recognize players having a good year this year, and part of it is to recognize greatness over a player’s entire career. The NHL made some good choices this year. Now the fun begins as the players vote for captains and alternates…

I guess 100 points and 30 goals in a season doesn’t qualify as all star when your making another all stars job that much easier

right, rookies were selected like the rest of the all-star team is selected: by NHL Ops.

BUT, the NHL decided that rookie reps could count towards every team being represented. So we ended up with some rookies who probably aren’t the top rookies being named so their teams would have a rep, rather than “wasting” a spot on the actual All-Star roster with a “every team has to have one representative so you’re the pity selection” player.

there’s good and bad to it.

Still, I think they should scrap the fan vote entirely. it’s such a joke. It’s a bigger joke than MLB all-star voting (and I will happily admit to being an old school ballot box stuffer. I love punching out those little chads and trying to vote in every single National).

I’m wavering on Malkin, but I sure as hell don’t think he’s the third best forward in hockey, which is where the fans voted him.

Every year, there’s people, either voted by fans or selected by hockey ops so every team is represented, who don’t deserve to be there. Heck, I’m not even sure Mike Green deserves to be there this season. That’s a bit of a make-up pick, imo.

All-Star games should be about who the fans want to see, the best players in the league, regardless of how they’re doing.
