Peerless is on top of his game, first with his calm and cool dissection of Cox’s poorly argued article. Good ending:

What Ted Leonsis has to do with this issue escapes us. But linking Alex Ovechkin’s contract and Ted Leonsis’ role in it to the Kovalchuk issue as a means to "prove" that there is a group of outlaw owners looking out only for their competitive interests? Maybe there are outlaw owners who will, out of selfish motives attached to the salary cap or revenue sharing, do damage to the sport. We wouldn’t be surprised if there are, but we don’t know, certainly not from the arguments made in this article. Maybe Cox just has a beef with ownership in general and perhaps Leonsis in particular. We don’t know, but whatever case he is trying to make, the dots just don’t connect…

…unless this is part of an "Ovechkin Project

.

Then Peerless brings us back to the upcoming season with his analysis of our d-corps. The lack of experience despite the potential talent does not make me feel warm and fuzzy but anxious about the upcoming season.

"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Cox makes zero sense. His Twitter feed reveals him as a self-righteous jerk, as well.

He’s just hoping to drum up some publicity to sell more books. No need for there to even be hoopla over the article…anyone with common sense would read Ovie’s contract being compared/grouped with those cap benders and take all of 2 seconds to come to the conclusion that Cox either 1) doesn’t research much 2) is bad at math or 3) really wants people to buy his book. Waste of breath.

The Ovie/Crosby comparisons on his Twitter are lacking sense as well. Claiming they don’t have just as negative obsession with Ovie is false for the most part, and we’re not even the opposing fan base who rags on Crosby the most. Go talk to Flyers’ fans for that.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

I’m confused about the article in The Province. Is it an argument against a salary cap? Because, you know, that ship has sailed.

Or is he just calling Ovechkin, Crosby, Mallkin and the Caps and Pens organizations stupid?

I read it as they got their stars to sign for less than they would have gotten as UFA. Nothing groundbreaking there.

I think it’s just refuting the Mitchell quote and the idea that the middle class of players are being squeezed by the fact that the cap is in place. Of course, with the cap tied to league revenues the players as a whole are getting less than they would in an open market, and I don’t know how you measure who’s losing out more as compared to an open market. That’s especially true if you make the argument that the league brings in more revenue as a result of increased parity.

by David Getz on Sep 6, 2010 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, obviously in an uncapped league the stars could make more. But given the existing structure, and what we’ve seen this year, Mitchell seems to be on the mark, at least for this year. When faced with taking less or getting nothing, what are you going to choose? I just missed the point of wasting the pixels.

Loved reading the 2011 UFA center article. It’s like walking the showroom at a really fancy car dealership. =)
That said…

I like Bergeron a lot. While he has had injury, especially concussion, issues, he’s a strong defensive player and an able offensive player. With Boston’s current glut of centers in Marc Savard, David Krejci, Bergeron, and just-drafted Tyler Seguin, they should be looking to trade a center. Rumor has it they are trying to trade Savard and re-sign Bergeron, but unless one of them goes to wing, that just may not be feasible. If the asking price is Alexander Semin, then so be it. Bergeron can produce without a star winger. Yes, please.

He’s willing to part with Semin to get PB. I’m not sure I am. What does the Rink think?

I’m in. I’m sure it’ll be decided on party lines, as always when Semin is involved.

The way I see it, Alex Semin is a top-flight winger on most teams in the NHL. It’s only by virtue of Washington’s unique situation that he’s on the second line. I’m generally an advocate of “be the team that gets the best single player out of the trade” guy, so unless we got a pick that turned into someone great, I feel like Boston wins a PB/Semin trade – that’s not to say we wouldn’t be better built for the postseason or whatnot, but that they got more out of the trade than we did.

If the goal is the Presidents’ Trophy, then I agree. But if they both have a year left on their deals and one fills a position of great need (2C, PK forward) and the other is a position of great strength (scoring wing, PP forward), the trade makes sense for the post-season. I don’t really give a rats ass about the regular season, so long as the postseason is reached. After that, the best postseason team possible should be the goal. If you concede that PB gives the Caps a better postseason squad, I don’t see how you avoid pulling the trigger.

The only thing that worries me about moving Semin is his cap number. He’s not cheap, at all, so you’ve got to find a place where they’re not too hard up against the cap, or they’re giving you big numbers right back.

A straight up trade puts Boston another 1.25M over, and they’re already 3M and change over the cap. Granted, when we’re talking about 2011 UFA’s, we’re probably talking about deadline deals, so they should have resolved the 3M by then, but will they have another million to play around with on that kind of a deal?

That’s true, but none of that is germane to whether or not I (being a member of the Rink commentariat) would give up Semin to get Bergeron. I would absolutely do it.

Semin for Bergeron. I would personally not wish to make that trade straight up. I would feel like the Caps are not getting enough in return. A throw in of some sort would be needed. (I haven’t thought as to whether it should be a current player or a draft pick or two.)

Of course, the salaries and the contract situation make it tougher to broker a deal.

Would Bergeron necessarily get the Caps further in post season? Good question. If we look at the teams’ relative fortunes, the Bruins (during a down regular season) advanced a round further than the Caps this year. Last year’s Bruins, who were expected to make the Stanley Cup after their great regular season, advanced no further than the Caps.

Those Bruins did advance a round further, fyi, but point taken. They ran into a hot goalie too. Funny how hot goalies tend to find #1 EC teams. Washington (Halak), Boston (Ward), Montreal (Biron, but MTL was simply outplayed by a large margin too), etc.

The Bruins, for all their lack of depth on paper, are strong down the middle and find ways to get new defensemen when they need to.

MON didn’t lose because Biron was hot, they lost because Carey Price blew goats.

I’d do it in heartbeat. The Caps lose a little bit of offense (although given the different systems and roles I don’t think it’s as much as the straight numbers suggest) in return for consistency and filling a position of weakness. Bergeron’s offensive upside may not be as high, but he is more reliable and at least as good defensively.

The Caps also have interest in Sheldon Souray, but the Oilers would need to take some serious money back in the deal. Tom Poti, Jason Chimera has reportedly been a talking point as well.

Seriously, that never stops being funny. Ever. Its comedy is without expiration date.
