Ranking the Capitals: #22
In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals (only players under contract will be considered). The criteria is simple: who at this moment is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players - because of what he brings on the ice or off it, his upside, what he could fetch in trade, and so on - who would it be? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll. [Note: here's a recap of last year's rankings; previous "Ranking the Capitals 2010" posts can be found here.]
Welcome Braden Holtby to the list and Francois Bouchard to the poll...

To me it’s now between Cody Eakin and Dmitry Kugryshev. The two youngsters who I expect to eventually become DC regulars. I would be much more dissapointed to lose one of them in a trade than Erskine, Sloan, Beagle etc.

I agree on Eakin, but the guy that is giving him a push for me is Gordon. I don’t expect much from Kugryshev. He seems like he may just be the next Bouchard.

To me, Eakin and Gordon seem to have the best shot to make the Caps. Beagle has a good shot as well, but he’d likely only be a 4th liner.

Right, and a guy who has 4th line upside is not going to light my fire.

Gordon was #11 in the AHL in goals scored last year. He claimed the #1 line role this season, and the Bears faltered a bit in the playoffs during the few games he was out. To me, that gives him the edge over Eakin.

But also remember Gordon is 24 and Cody is 19. The age of Gordon makes me put him down a peg.

So of the twenty one on the list so far, only 5 D? Yikes.
Gotta go with Erskine.

4 of the top 10 were D, then Poti at 13. But, that’s sort of the situation this organization is in with defenders. After those guys, it’s a serious pitfall.

True. But at this point, wouldn’t it be “most valuable” to the Caps to at least have 3 defensive lines filled?

Not necessarily. A guy like Erskine is very replaceable (especially at his salary), so if it came down to keeping either Erskine or a prospect that may fill a more important role in the future it may be better to keep the prospect and look for someone outside the system to fill Erskine’s spot.

Not when the Caps have a number of guys who can fill it. There isn’t one standout for 6D – only a few ones who can do the job, and not very well.

And it would be pretty simple to acquire a reasonable Erskine replacement via free agency, whereas it’d be impossible to acquire a replacement for Eakin (in terms of upside, cost and rights control) without giving up an asset.
Eakin is the more valuable player to this franchise. Erskine will likely be more impactful to the 2010-11 Caps’ fortunes (from a direct on-ice perspective). The two shouldn’t be confused.
