Sunday Caps Clips
Your savory Labor Day Sunday links:
- Where to begin? Where it began, of course. Damien Cox takes his shot at cap-circumventing contracts and the "outlaw owners" who love them, and works some serious contortions to drag Alex Ovechkin and Caps owner Ted Leonsis into the morass. [Toronto Star]
- Uncle Ted is having none of that. [Ted's Take]
- Say, Damien doesn't happen to have a book coming out soon, right? A book about a famous and well-compensated hockey player, whose boss has Google alerts and a Twitter account and a restless blog army at the ready? Oh wait. He does? Exactly. [ProHockeyTalk]
- This may not have been the most effective sales strategy ever. [@Mastro72]
- Moving on, the rewind function on Kevin Bryant's DVR comes in for more abuse as he turns the telescope around and looks at how goals are scored ... on the Caps' netminders. First up is Semyon Varlamov. [Jumping the Glass]
- Hey Varly, can we have a lift? [@dchesnokov]
- "If there is an emerging concept with respect to the most important ingredient in a Stanley Cup winner in the past few years, it is that a winner needs a solid top-four blue-line crew." [Peerless]
- Fun with numbers:
- Those 70's sweaters [Rock the Red]
- Hockey's best players, by the numbers. For example, AO rocks the number 8 harder than Cam Neely, Igor Larionov, or Teemu Selanne. Fact. [NHL.com]
- 30 Caps in 30 Days - The Jay Beagle edition [Red Line Station]
- Getting to know Bugsy Watson. Suddenly a gameday pizza in Old Town sounds like a great idea. Do you think they have WiFi? [Capitals Gains]
- Meet the hockey player who got in a fight with Nyjer Morgan. [Half Smokes]
- Finally, happy 45th birthday to Mark Ferner.

This is the angriest photo of Ted I could find. He’s clenching that fist and preparing to sock it to a Toronto Star employee.

I’m not so well versed in historical jersey number, but recently numbers 19 and 91 really strike me as star-studded. Via hockey reference, recent 91s include Fedorov, Savard, Stamkos, Tavares, Naslund, Brad Richards, and Gomez (and Daigle—negative points for that). Recent 19s include Arnott, Backstrom, Gomez, (Daigle shows up here too) DJ KING!!!!!!!!!!! Mellanby, Naslund, O’Sullivan, Brad Richards, Sakic, Savard, Yzerman, Ryan Whitney. Boudreau also wore 19 for a few years, apparently.
As for #8, Ovechkin + Doughty pretty much wins.
Bruce will always be #7 for Hyannisport… No other jersey suits him as much…

How you put Patrick O’Sullivan on that list over Travis Zajac is beyond me…

A blog I used to hang out on was a bit too ideologically extreme for my taste for did have one acronym I liked, that applies itself beautifully to the whole Damien Cox thing.

Ovi’s charity match was successfully completed today. Ovi’s team led 9-7 at the end of two 15-minute periods, and they agreed to hold one more 15-minute period in which the score equalized to 13-13 and everyone left satisfied.

If you ever wondered if Ovi truly feels at home in Washington, DC, the capital city of America and host to embassies and government ministries and fleets of attaches and functionaries and whatnot, here’s just a partial guest list for his party today:
On the ice in Sokolniki plan to reach such famous personalities as deputy chairman of the Government of the RF, Alexei Kudrin, Minister of Interior Rashid Nurgaliev, the head of the Federal Tax Service Mikhail Mishustin, President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov, governor of the Krasnodar Territory Alexander Tkachev, the Mayor of Kazan Ilsur Metshin etc.

Bugsy’s is pretty close to me, so I’ve gone there to watch games sometimes. We should plan on this. It’s a great environment for Caps fans.

By the Numbers...
Three Caps in the first third of the numbers, although Sheehy didn’t wear 0 when he was with the Caps. Ovie on #8 is right, and certainly Hunter on #32.
Gotta disagree with Joel Otto as runner up on #29. Otto was a center with Calgary who had a high face off percentage, checked well, played on the PK, and…well, he was a slightly better version of Dave Steckel. The runner up on 29 should have been Vokoun. That there was no mention of Joe Reekie there is also disappointing…

Housley would make it 4 former Caps in the top 3rd (but he didn’t wear 6 for the Caps either).

#10 Francis? No Way It's Lafleur.
While he has more career assists and points than Lafleur (likely because he played for so long ,which counts for something). He was nowhere near as good as Lafluer. Lafleur had one of the best 6 season runs (74-75 through 79-80) in NHL history.
a) 6 straight seasons with at least 50 goals .
b) 6 straight seasons with at least 119 points.
c) 6 straight seasons with a +/- of +40 or better.
d) 6 straight 1st Team NHL All- Star @ Right Wing .
e) 3 Art Ross Trophies.
f) 3 Lester Pearson awards.
g) 2 Hart Memorial Trophies.
h) 3 SC Playoff Scoring titles.
i) The ’77 Conn Smythe Trophy.
j) 4 of his 5 Stanley Cups.
Clearly, while Ron Francis was very good player for a long time, Guy Lafleur was the best NHL player to ever wear #10.
for those of you who dont have the twitter, here’s a bit of cox’s response to ted’s posting, via the @damospin twitter account.
Poor Ted Leonsis. Apparently can’t read. No one said his deal was cap circumventing. His own prez admitted Bettman was against it.
a pattern of mr. cox develops – his comment is technically true, he didn’t directly say “ovechkin’s contract circumvents the cap”, but he includes it in an article whose whole premise is to discuss cap circumventing contracts. in fact, he claims ovie’s nearly straight line contract “influenced” the contract for vinnie in Tampa Bay. huh? lets get a tale of the tape:
- Position: Ovie – W; Vinnie – C
- Age at start of contract: Ovie – 23; Vinnie – 29
- Age at end of contract: Ovie – 35; Vinnie – 40
- High annual salary: Ovie – $10M; Vinnie – $10M
- Low annual salary: Ovie – $9M; Vinnie – $1M
- Cap Hit – Ovie $9.5M; Vinnie $7.7M
clearly an unfair association given that the only thing their contracts have in common is the fact that both will earn $10M at some point during their deal.
as for dick patrick saying bettman was against it, well, if that is true it would be the first time i’ve read damian produce a sourced quote. sorry, but i cant recall any arguement against ovie’s deal other than from canadian media who felt he should play in a real hockey city.
Leonsis was very helpful with the book, btw. But Ovechkin is unhappy, so now Ted has to play like he is, too. I get it.
an owner backing his biggest player against what appears to be an unsourced hatchet job designed to sell books. yeah, i get it too.
Funny how Leonsis, in bragging about his team’s success, doesn’t mention they need $14 mil from rev sharing just to break even.
well, again, factually ted doesnt say this. why should he? and it’s not like ted shy’s away from discussing the fact that this team loses money every year. why? well, as damien well knows, its two fold. the caps have one of the lowest average ticket prices in the league. and two, the team HAD one of the worst leases in pro sports. very little to no advertising revenue and pretty much no concession revenue. not only that, but no revenue from the 3000 club seats that were controlled by WS&E.
so yes, the caps participated in revenue sharing. but give ted credit, he didnt just take the money and run like the NHL version of the pittsburgh pirates. the guy committed big dollars to ov and backs before he ever settled on the VC and wiz. he’ll end up paying nylander $8.5M to NOT play for his team, which is not included in the nearly $60M in salaries he will pay out for guys under the cap.
something tells me this math will change now that monumental is in control. i’m sure the league and NHLPA is very interested in how the money is going to be divided up in the new structure cause it could mean additional NHL league revenue, i.e. higher cap.
But I guess Gare and I are the enemy now. So much for the Caps being an open book franchise. They are, as long as u write what Ted likes.
spare me the dramatics. because ted wont cooperate with guys looking to make a buck off their franchise player all of a sudden they are some north korean dictatorship? dont flatter yourself damien. i dont know how other NHL owners operate, but i think we can all agree that amongst local ownership, there is no one more open than ted. he sure doesnt take shit from anyone and he doesnt shy away from controversial topics. but to suggest that ted only accepts people who write what he wants to hear…well, if only dave fay and george micheal were alive to respond to that. i do hope that he doesnt ban cox from the locker room, as i that would just to aid cox on his desired path to hockey writer martyrdom.
The Ovechkin Project is already getting people upset in DC. Guess that can’t be a bad thing, right?
and herein lies the crux of the matter…selling books. good for you damien. you’re making mike wise look like edward r. murrow.
It is strange how DC fans are so sensitive about Crosby and Pitt fans aren’t bothered at all by Ovie. Must be winning the Cup and all.
my personal favorite. ends with a not so subtle dig at the caps, which followed one of the more unaware comments i’ve ever seen. here’s a posting on thepensblog.com which has 99 comments regarding talbott calling ov a douche.
http://www.thepensblog.com/pensblog-news/jobber-posts/caps-fan-wants-apology.html
in case you didnt get all the way to comment 97, here it is:

fuck ovetchkin
i know he is without a doubt a great player (if you deny this your a fuckin idiot. hes better then almost everyone except for malkin and crosby pretty much)
but hes got some serious fuckin issue and acts like a little bitch all the time. he needs to grow the fuck up already real shit
pretty sure zombieorpik is a high school english teacher in the ’burgh. but to me, the fact that the pens have won a cup yet still obsess over ov is more damning than caps fans being “sensitive” about crosby. again, damien knows the score, but knows that playing crosby off ov sells.
so in the end, damien is doing what guys do who are trying to sell books…promote. and in promotion, nothing sells like controversy. cox and joyce are trying to be the nhl equivalent of the salahi’s, generating controversy at the expense of substance and quality.
perhaps he’s seen the preorder ranking of his book on amazon.com. currently at #49 in all hockey books. behind such classics as:
“Roller Hockey” #34
“Hockey for Dummies” #36
“Beckett Hockey Card Price Guide 2010” #20
and well behind
“Winning Field Hockey for Girls” # 15

Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
Awesome post. A point by point take down. Factual, and well argued. Damian is a good writer but he completely disingenuous when he states that he is not saying Ovi’s deal is like Hossa or Bobby Lou’s. No it’s not but the placement and mention of Ovi’s deal inside the article where Cox is talking about the other deals is like guilt by association. And unfair to the Caps.
As for that last comment about the Pens and the Cup, well I thought Cox had more class than that. Apparently not.
Damien Cox: Facts are just inconvenient impediments to spinning the story the way I want it spun.
excellent take-down, dcsportsfan1.

Rec for amazing analysis and for a strong stomach by wading through those idiotic comments at Pensblog. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.
I wondered earlier what Cox was tweeting since I don’t tweet. Cox comes off like a jerk to me. Is this really how he wants to raise interest in his book? By acting like he has a Caps vendetta of some sort. Or that they have one with him.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

How so? Other than repeating a rumor that has been repeated ad naseum throughout the summer of course.
Yeah, since we’d heard from Mirtle or someone (or some Edmonton journal?) that they’re a) waiting for Belanger to become official and b) trying to trade Fleischmann, and some wise people on a certain prominent Capitals blog connected the dots to c) if you keep Belanger “a secret” then that gives you a bit more leverage, theoretically, in trade talks revolving around shipping away one of your forwards.

FWIW, I was watching a little NHLN this afternoon. Where they scroll the notable free agents along the bottom of the screen, there was no mention of Belanger. So, does that mean they’re going off the reports, or that there’s a real, registered contract? Still weird.
