okay, the way I leaned it was:
S.W.A.G. = Stuff We All Get. (used widely in Theater/TV/Film/PR jargon)
Schwag [Shh-Wag] = what the HS hockey players in New England called the foul smelling ooze that gets spit into assorted containers by people who use chewing tobacco. e.g. “Dude, you knocked over my schwag water, now the whole room wreaks!”
—If anybody knows Potsie (and cares to reach him in Switzerland) he should be able to confirm this definition, we went to the same boarding school, and the above example sentence was common, if heavily laced with expletives.

I don’t understand the bobblehead posturing. We already know that Backstrom is this year’s game giveaway bobblehead and that Laich is the next blood drive bobblehead. Has that person been living under a rock for the past week or two?

on Крис Бурк (Chris Bourque), I’m surprised they didn’t render the first character of his first name to be the “X” instead of “k”. It seems that most words (names) in this country where the “ch” is pronounced like a “k”, it was derived from the old Green letter Chi that looks like a X. The Russian form of Christopher is Христофор (Khristofor). And, if he were going by Chris, it would be transcribed as Khris as Kh is generally the transcription of “X”; i.e. the Russian letter derived from Greek Chi.

Wow--thanks for the links
Great set of links today and I’m still catching up from the last few days.
We were at Kettler yesterday tho’ too late to see any of the Caps. But the smell of the ice was intoxicating. The dog days of summer are finally almost over.
Have to admit I laughed at the Flyers rookie camp bit with the baby Flyer hitting the baby Cap. Who knew Flyers had a sense of humor!
Okay back to reading!
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Okay, with the Kovy deal (15 for 100M) approved by the NHL, and a cap hit of $6,666,667… this means that the Devils are presently $2,968,334 over the cap with 12/7/2.
With what they’ve got right now, the closest thing to natural lines I can figure is:
Elias-Kovy-Rolston
Langenbrunner-Zajac-Parise
Clarkson-Arnott-Zubrus
Pelley-Zharkov-Leblond
Winterion Game Studios
Visit us online at : http://winterion.com
Sticking with forwards...
The guys with NTC’s are Langen and Rolston. Arnott and Elias have NMC’s.
The guys making more than $3,468,334 (removal +500k replacement) right now:
Elias (6,000,000) NMC
Rolston (5,062,500) NTC
Arnott (4,500,000) NMC
Zajac (3,887,500)
The guys making more than $2,968,334 (simply the cap hit) right now:
Zubrus (3,400,000)
Parise (3,125,000)
Winterion Game Studios
Visit us online at : http://winterion.com
They are definitely in a tight spot. Zubrus and Rolston are unmoveable because of the contracts. Elias probably is too, even if they wanted to move him. They don’t want to move Zajac so I think it’ll end up being a combination of lesser paid players. Maybe Clarkson and Salvador get moved. They’ll probably bring up Josefson and Tedenby for cheaper offensive contributions, but they’ll need to move serious salary before they can even fit those two guys.
Your lines above have no C on the first line. I bet Zajac/Parise and Kovy/Arnott are the cores of the top two lines. Then Elias and Langenbrunner will fill out the other wings on those two lines. Josefson and Tedenby will probably get 3rd or 4th line duty depending on organizational philosophy, but again it depends on who ends up staying or going.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I tried this. Works in theory – adding Josefson (900k) and Tedenby (875k) while removing Clarkson (2,666,667) and Salvador (2.9M) results in 13/6/2 and $823,333 in cap space. That means another 500k D can be brought in and they skate in just under the cap with 323,333 in breathing room.
Winterion Game Studios
Visit us online at : http://winterion.com
It also means that Josefson would probable center Rolston/Zubrus as the third line?
Winterion Game Studios
Visit us online at : http://winterion.com
Probably. I don’t know how Lou likes to handle the rookies but I could also see him playing the rookies as basically a 4th line.
They’d probably want to get Urbom or Corrente in as the cheap D, assuming either is ready to play NHL minutes, but I think they can only afford Corrente under your scenario. They’d still need to clear another ~40K to get Urbom in, but at some point they’ll get an injury to open some cap space if they can’t find another way to do it. I’d expect both Corrente and Urbom to get a good look with NJD this year, especially if Salvador goes. That D is going to rely heavily on its top 3. And it’s not even a great top 3 that you can rely on. AV, White, Tallinder is an OK group, but nothing special. Andy Greene will have to play big minutes and the bottom pair will be an adventure.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
It does make our situation seem pretty enviable, doesn’t it?
Winterion Game Studios

I really doubt it. I’d think Lou would be more likely to bring back Dean McAmmond and/or Jay Pandolfo on cheap, two-way deals if he manages to free up some cap space. Also, the cupboard up in Albany is kinda empty.
The guys I was talking about are D, not F. The two young F that are likely to be in NJ are Tedenby and Josefson, and I don’t think anything but a salary cap cramp keeps those guys out. Maybe Josefson gets pushed out if they have enough Cs, but Tedenby is going to be a W this year. I could easily see McAmmond or Pandolfo being signed to fill out the depth spots if they take a cheap deal, but I don’t see either of those guys keeping Tedenby off the roster. Albany is kinda empty, but neither Tedenby or Josefson are going to see too many games there. Urbom and Corrente are the D, and they’ll see more time in Albany, but at some point getting them acclimated to the NHL with their cheap salary would be a better option than $500K veterans.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Wow, only one ELC guy is pretty rough—imagine if Greene hadn’t been a complete revelation when Martin got hurt last year.
Here’s one: get Brodeur to waive his NTC and send him to Tampa for Dan Ellis and a pick.
/Yzerman’d
Back to reality, only Zubrus, Salvador, and Clarkson look movable at all. I’m not sure how the Devils’ finances work out, but putting Zubrus in the minors would help.
by red army line on Sep 4, 2010 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions
They have buried guys in the minors before, so there is some precedent there, but I highly doubt they’d do it for 3 years at Zubrus’ price. I’m sure they’d love to move him, but I don’t see how it’s possible. There’s no chance he’s worth his salary and he has 3 years left on it. I bet Lou would give up Zubrus for a bag of pucks, but nobody is going to take Zubrus without a dowry, especially now that NJD is over the cap like they are. I doubt Lou is going to want to give up a dowry just to erase a bad contract, but if it gives them a chance to load up to win now then maybe he will.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
If the Devils want a 13th forward on the roster, they need to make, at minimum, $3,968,334 in cap room, right? So, that’s about 100k more than simply Zajac, if they were to move him and promote Arnott to 2C.
One supposes they could try to move both Zajac and Zubrus, getting at least one forward of value in the $2M range for the third line, some prospects/picks, and come in where they need to with regards to the cap hit.
I’m not really sure what else they could do. Bury Brodeur in Albany and go with Hedberg/McKenna? =)

I saw the video yesterday and thought it was funny, right up until the dead baby part. Not so much because it’s a dead cartoon baby, but it was just so uncreative. I didn’t find it that offensive because I thought it was a bit tongue-in-cheek about the Flyers’ reputation. Perhaps I gave the blogger too much credit and perhaps I needed to wake up a bit more.

Last year’s Flyers rookies were older and more experienced than ours so it wasn’t like it was exactly a level playing field.

I don’t even remember who won last year.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
The Flyers rookies beat ours by alot. Holtby was in goal that day (and not having one of his better days but the defense apparently let him down as well)
The Caps decided that Varly and Neuvy had nothing to prove by doing the rookie game.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Oh. Enh. It goes back and forth. (Also, if you want to annoy them, remind them what happens when the Flyers give the Caps 9-minute power plays and attach the highlights from last 12/5.)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Sounds like a great idea. I wasn’t able to watch that game since it was my company’s Christmas party. But I read about it and enjoyed the fact that the Caps totally demolished the Flyers. Backstrom having an awesome day and, of course, the 9 minute power play. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving team than the Flyers.
Rocking the Red since 1975
It’s really not even a debate when you look at the prospect pools. We are top 5 and they are bottom 5. Their best prospects probably wouldn’t be in our top 5 prospects. It’s still a fun thing for fans to get into, but it doesn’t really mean anything in terms of the respective prospect pools. I pretty much just hope our studs that play can stay healthy.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Who knows what that dude was thinking? But I can’t accuse him of laziness. I sure didn’t make a rookie game “commercial.” And the damn internet really needs a sarcasm font in these situations because I only meant to use hyperbole to say that I thought it was a bad creative decision not that it was actually sinister. Also, the one and only creative dead baby event I’ve ever seen was in Tropic Thunder, when they had that doll pinwheel thru the air as the bridge exploded toward the end of the movie. Just so totally incongruous, it cracks me up every time.

Does it mean anything that Fleischman was at offseason player work outs? Would that indicate he’s not being traded?
Eakin is sure getting a lot of attention. I enjoyed the Prairie Post writeup. He caught my eye this summer at Dev camp. Very sure of himself. Will be interesting how he looks at the upcoming camps.
Thanks again Emily for the fabulous clips today. It’s a great way to start a lazy Saturday morning.

Hi everyone, I can only pop in briefly today, and I’m delighted you’re making good use of Clips.
Now for a question – if you could only go to Caps training camp on Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th which day would you go?
I can only go one day, and can’t decide.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I’d probably go Sunday. Saturday is when I expect the parents to take the anklebiters and you won’t be able to get anywhere close to anything decent. Sunday a lot of them will probably be in church in the morning.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I’d go Sunday, but solely because I work Saturday 8:30-6. Given the choice, I’d still probably take Sunday for the same reasons gotsparkly listed.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I’d probably go Sunday since going that Saturday would be impossible anyhow. My husband’s niece is getting married on Friday night, September 17 in Richmond and we’re all spending the night there (but will drive back on Saturday.)
Yes, she’s getting married on Ovi’s 25th birthday. (Should we send her future husband a picture of Ovi as a gag gift and future reminder of any wedding anniversaries?)
Well, I’ll be remembering that wedding date. Ovi + 25.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Both days will be crowded, but Sunday probably less so. Kettler is unbearable on the weekends. The popularity of the team has completely outgrown the size of that facility—bleacher seating, standing room space, pro shop, elevator access. If I didn’t live a block away, I’d never go.
Has it really gotten that bad? The pro shop can be pretty bad – they definitely need more space in there! But, I’ve always been able to get a bleacher seat on the rare occasions when I can scrape out enough time on a weekend to go down there. (I live an hour and a half away.)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
It was extremely crowded for the rookie scrimmage. Every seat taken. I had gotten there early so that I could do the morning skate for fans; hence I had a place to sit. Skate bags are great place holders.
Those that arrived promptly at the designated time could not get seated.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Good to know. I was planning to arrive early for the rookie game anyway.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I can’t get off for the rookie game this time. Too much stuff going on at work that day. (Especially when I’m taking the next day off anyhow.)
The weekend time for the Development Camp scrimmage probably contributed to the overly large crowd so that’s why they’re doing reservations for the Caps vs Flyers rookies.
Rocking the Red since 1975
It’s not always that bad, but it is for the highly-publicized events that will draw crowds, like the recent prospect camp scrimmage. That was insane. As will be the Flyers-Caps rookie scrimmage, I imagine.
I’m just doing a little sport-bitching. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for those who hate Chuckie Cheese-like crowds, it’s insufferable. I long for the days when only a couple dozen folks were in the stands and you could hear everything going on on the ice. I dig the practice dynamic, cause you can really observe how the team chemistry dynamic is working.
But to get that, the Caps would have to suck again. Is that worth it?
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Kettler on week days?
I have to ask this. How is Kettler on week days compared to the weekend? I assume that with adults working and kids in school, Kettler is more fan friendly during the week insofar as getting seats, and in a better location for taking photos and videos. Is this correct?
Also, from anyone with personal experience, what’s the best strategy and tactic for acquiring player autographs after the Kettler practices? Is there a prime location, and are some players more accessible than others? I assume it’s way more difficult to get the marquee players to stop, but correct me if I’m wrong.
Sometimes, players will give autographs indoors when coming off the ice. Most of the time, players have been snagged when coming out of the Players’ entrance to the parking lot (although I think this option was blocked during the playoff season).
Green is very accessible, as is Laich. I’ve gotten a variety of different people there, including Bradley, Semin, and Theodore.
(I hear Backstrom and Fleischmann live close enough to the rink so I have never gotten either of their autographs at the Kettler parking lot. I’ve gotten Nick at memorabilia shows. I’ve never gotten Flash’s autograph but talked to him at Casino Night.)
I’ve seen Ovi sign a few and then say, “I got to go, guys.” In fairness to Ovi, there’s a limit to how long he can spend giving autographs. Reports are that Ovi’s more willing to sign when the crowds aren’t totally ridiculous.
Rocking the Red since 1975
It’s really a weekend thing. Once the season starts, since school will be in session, all of the weekday practices and morning skates will not be heavily attended. To me, those are the best times to go. My favorite place to watch is the upper balcony area behind the goal closest to the pro shop. You’re literally right on top of the goalie. You’d have to look through netting to take pics and video, so if that is what you really want to do, the best place is probably standing against the glass over near the autograph area.
I just tried downloading this week’s radio show, and got a “podcast could not be played on this iPhone message” any idea what’s up? (I love Rink Radio, by the way. Maybe it should get its own thread every week?)
Hmmm…don’t know what the problem is. I was just able to download it from itunes through the program. Not real familiar with the iphone process though.

I downloaded it just fine last night. Good show as usual—thanks. I’m a later fan but I also feel more of a Patrick division kind of rivalry in large part because of geography. DC is much more closely linked to the northeast corridor. I’ve gone to the Rangers, the Devils, and the Phillies arenas because I get to those cities easily. I never head south. However I do feel a certain urgency when the Caps play Tampa Bay. They are for me the closest thing to a rivalry in the Southeast.

Damien Cox should be banned from the entire DC area, parts of VA and MD included, anywhere and everywhere within the reach of the Caps media coverage. IMO his surname exactly fits him, although it should be hyphenated with Ucker.
We were all saying this after Mike Wise came out and insulted the fanbase and his creds haven’t been revoked AFAIK, I’d presume that Ted’s not petty enough to start now.
He said his piece, what’s done is done.

Probably true. But Cox has shown himself to be such a child, it’s pathetic. Ted says something he disagrees with, so he goes on twitter and picks a fight. The bigger response would have been to keep his friggin mouth and keyboard shut. Then, when people call him out, he gets defensive. Remind me not to click on any links to stories of his, please. Even when he gets it right, which he does often, he’s a sanctimonious a**.
We all admit that Ted sometimes lets his emotions overrule common sense, and he’s correct that Cox, along with a host of others, has erroneously lumped Ovechkin’s (and some others) contract into the mess. He could have left the book out of it, but then again, if JP got an advance copy, maybe Ted did too.

Ted’s piece seemed to be in response to Cox’s article.
I am extrapolating here but I wonder if Cox makes a larger argument in his book about Ovi’s lengthy term and record breaking overall amount set the bar for a star player’s contract and that other players demanded similar numbers thereby leading to cap-torturing structures to the deals.
At this point I think I may speed read it over coffee at Barnes and Noble—no need to put money in his pocket..

I wouldn’t count on it being physically at B&N, or any other store. They’ll only stock books that they think will sell in decent numbers, and this is a book by a generally locally unknown Canadian author. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Guess I won’t be reading it then. Nothing I’ve read of it so far makes me want to add to his royalties.

Damien Cox on JRR a few weeks ago, “[the Caps] knew that in signing Alex Ovechkin to a 13 year contract they weren’t doing exactly what Gary Bettman would like them to do. These other contracts are, of course, a whole different animal.”

“Yet in recent years, despite the constant admonitions of Bettman and his right-hand man, Bill Daly, not to sign contracts with double-digit terms or these torqued arrangements designed to give players huge dollars with reduced cap hits, one after another these Bettman "supporters" have ignored him.
Ted Leonsis, to name another, was a hawk during the last labour struggle and now drinks deeply and gratefully from the revenue-sharing trough. The president of his Washington Capitals, Dick Patrick, is part of one of hockey’s most famous families and a committed league man.
But when they wanted to give Alexander Ovechkin a 13-year, $124 million contract, one they knew Bettman wouldn’t approve of, they did it anyway. That encouraged others, like the bizarre Tampa twosome of Len Barrie and Oren Koules, to engineer a deal with Vinny Lecavalier that started with a $10 million salary and wound down to $1 million."
Sounds like he’s lumping it with them in that article. Might not be what he meant, but he implies it.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I think Cox was trying to make two separate arguments—that the league desired shorter imultiyear deals versus the league actively opposes front loaded lomgterm deals designed to make cap hit lower—but by the end of the article he lumps them together, almost as if he is suggesting that Ovi’s deal opened the floodgates for these other cap-torturing longterm deals.
Moreover I find the piece sloppy in that he somehow fails to mention Hossa or the Blackhawks as well as some others in his criticism of these cap-mitigating structured deals.
He seems to have gone after Ted personally too in his description of him as a “hawk” in support of the NHL during the strike who then went against the league to make lomgterm deals when it suited him personally. I haven’t read that Bettman personally opposed Ovi’s or Nicky’s deals but I have read him specifically opposing those other deals.
So it just appears to me that Cox hax engaged further in lazy writing and has the Caps, their franchise player, and the organization in his crosshairs. Perhaps he’s become sensitive to the criticism he received thus far about the book or perhaps he came into this project as hostile once he wasn’t going to be granted unlimited personal access to Ovi.

I was thinking of giving TOP a chance despite the questionable excerpts featured here but this tweet changed that benefit of the doubt:
It is strange how DC fans are so sensitive about Crosby and Pitt fans aren’t bothered at all by Ovie. Must be winning the Cup and all.To hell with him. Don’t expect even fair-minded Caps fans to support such work if he’s going to go that route.
