Having said that, now that I’m leaving, they are going to be doing hockey here in Washington even a little bit different than they did before. They’re actually going to have set anchor teams, where they didn’t have that before.
Whither Smokin’ Al?
Nice interview Travis.

Wait – someone gave enough of a [profane] about the Caps to assign them an anchor team?
What is this world coming to?

Further down in that interview is where it seems to get muddy. Or murky. I mean if you’re going to have an anchor for hockey coverage in this town among existing on-air talent, a former TSN/Score reporter would seem to be a better choice, but that’s why I don’t make those decisions I guess.

OK, which one of you made Lisa’s mom cry?
On cruel people on the Internet:
LH: Not everybody is going to love me. Unfortunately, you read stuff and it breaks your heart. My mom called me the other day in tears, telling me these horrible things she read about me on the Internet. And she was believing them, like “why do people say that Lisa?” And I’m like “Mom, I don’t know these people, I can’t control it.” So I forwarded her the things that people were saying about other people, too, so it wasn’t like it was just me. laughter It’s like, “Mom, stop reading the comments and just read the article.”
Of course, you can’t believe everything Lisa is saying:
LH: To be honest with you, I haven’t heard one bad thing about the city (Philadelphia)
On that first quote… if I had to speculate wildly, I’d guess it was a comment on OFB’s nice post on her (see comment #8, which has since been deleted, but made a pretty outrageous claim about her… um… coverage of the team).

Caps in the Cupboard
Couple snippets that caught my eye in Masisak’s piece.
First, MarJo. Cory notes that, due to the “out clause” in his contract, MarJo is unlikely to play in Hershey this year; Caps or bust, in other words. I thought Farjestads had moved on, and doesn’t have a slot for him? Mentally, I was pencilling him in for some seasoning in HER if he doesn’t break camp with the big club. Do I need to revise that analysis? Thoughts?
Then, there’s AnGus. Cory says it’s too early to call him a bust. Really?
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I think you need to revise that analysis. He’s breaking camp with the big club and he’s here or in Sweden this year as far as I know.
As for AnGus, yeah, really. Give him a healthy season before giving up on him entirely. Of course, if he can’t have that healthy season soon, feel free to skip Step 1.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Eh, Fehr turned out alright after a (long) while.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Fehr was also a 50-goal scorer in the WHL (twice), which is a lot more than young Anton has shown anywhere so far.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
On point one, duly noted. That’s kind of a drag. Frankly, my hopes on him being able to compete at an NHL level straight out of the chute are limited. I guess it might prompt the club to keep him if he’s on the borderline, rather than lose him for a year, though.
On point two, the vibe I got on AnGus was not only that he had health issues, but desire/makeup issues as well. I suppose I can rescind the dismissal order I have filed next to his name for now, though.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I wonder if they’d consider carrying him all year with limited playing time as the usual healthy scratch

Mackan? Unless they think he’ll be a regular in the playoffs I hope not. I’d rather they save the contract year and just send him to the SEL if he isn’t going to actually play here. He’s only 19 and the track record of 19 year olds in the NHL isn’t very good. Give him another season at home unless he’s one of the phenoms that can play regularly at 19.

FWIW I thought he played pretty well with Rick Nash. And Eric Staal too, believe it or not.
Obviously there wasn’t much instant chemistry, but those aren’t guys Crosby plays with that much, he doesn’t really play that much internationally.
To think Crosby doesn’t gel with wingers is ridiculous (see Andy Hilbert putting up 18 points in 19 games). It’s just individual that he doesn’t always mesh with.
…And even though people knock how he played with Iginla, they played well enough for Sid to yell for that pass (and Iggy to find him) in OT of the GM game.

But…but…he makes everyone around him better. He could get 25 goals for a ham sandwich with his passing skills.

A very cheery, uplifting, optimistic Question of the Day to celebrate having a long weekend.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Kovalchuk contract and the NHL/NHLPA agreement
For Devils fans and for all NHL fans, I’m glad the Kovalchuk saga will be settled for now.
I’m curious to see the new agreement and what exactly it covers in terms of limits. Age? Length? (High to low dollars in a contract?)
Also, it will be interesting to see what happens next since as we know, the Devils will have to make at least one move and there’s the Belanger contract, etc. Dominoes???
Dreger tweets that deal will be accepted…or is that what you were referring to?
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Laughlin vs. Dibble As Analysts
Dibble was let go and he should have been for chastising a player for not playing when he was injured. For someone who actually played the game he should have understood that players get injured. It happens. By ranting about Strasburg not pitching when he was hurt, he was calling into question Strasburg’s integrity.
Laughlin does criticize players when they make mistakes. When Semin takes a bad penalty, he says it was a bad penalty. When Green gets caught up ice, he shows you why and explains it so casual fans can understand. But I have never (in 2 decades) heard him criticize a player’s character or dedication to the game. Not once.
