"No matter what my role is in a game, no matter how much ice time I get, at the end of it I want to be able to say I changed the game. So sometimes it might be scoring a goal, but for the most part it's the way I play, with the grit and the energy that I bring for the club." - Matt Hendricks, who the Caps announced earlier has signed a one-year, two-way deal with the team, on his role

Good Signing
I like it, played very well and is committed to being a producer and contributer. Solid signing
I do like this signing, but I worry that the presence of another NHL-ready forward may further impede some of the upper tier prospects from cracking the roster. I think signing Hendricks directly hurts Andrew Gordon, for example.
It won’t hurt Gordon once Gordon gets picked up on waivers.

Hershey
Barring a trade or a huge surprise out of camp, Hendricks is on his way to Hershey for the time being.
As a backup to Gordo and Steckel, I like it. Versatile, without sucking at every position.

He played quite a few games for the Avs last season, what’s your take on the guy?

Good grinder with speed and decent hands. He got more playing time in Denver than he might have elsewhere, which helped him. He also shot 14.3% last year, so I don’t think he’ll repeat his scoring rate.
Unless A. Gordon makes the roster out of camp, this is a bad signing for him. Hendricks does many of the same things Gordon does, but he can also fill in at center.

I’m not convinced this signing is too directly tied to AGord. Gordon has much more upside and the team just re-signed him this summer so presumably they still want to see more of him. I’d honestly be more concerned if I were Steckel than A. Gordon.

He sounds like he knows he could be headed for Hershey. It’s darned impressive that he played his way into a contract on this team.

He wasn’t a random invite. Boureau/McPhee had something in mind, certainly. But he definitely maximized his opportunity, a character trait the Capitals will need plenty of this season.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
From whats been said, apparently he got the invite when Belanger signed with Phoenix, otherwise it would’ve been Belangers spot.
Hmmm. I’m not sure I buy that. Belanger would have been here on a guaranteed contract with a defined roster spot. Hendricks is here on an NHL tryout with his only “guaranteed” spot in all likelihood down in Hershey.

Per Vogel Belanger was offered an invite to the camp, but he declined.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?
"I'm not going to tell!"
Well can you at least guarantee fifty?

Ok, but that’s a little different than the tone of the original comment as I read it. I thought he was saying, “when Belanger didn’t sign here, the Caps asked Hendricks.”
What he meant was, “when Belanger didn’t come for an NHL tryout, the Caps asked Hendricks.”
The problem with the 2nd statement is that I don’t believe for a second that the Caps actually thought Belanger would come.

I like this signing. He will be a fine player in Hershey / depth / injury replacement if needed.
It does get the contract total closer to the limit, though ( 47?). Nothing too serious right now but worth keeping a closer eye on.
If he is decent on draws than he just may be an upgrade over Steckel. More speed, better hands, more scoring potential. Not sure how his puck possession skills are.
He rarely took faceoffs for the Avs last season.
What he does do is play hard, kill penalties, and stand up for his teammates. He’s also a vocal guy in the locker room and is very accountable for his performance.

You good folks will LOVE Hendricks. Check this out, :32 seconds in, Hendricks is #15. If Avs fans had their choice, we would have resigned him long term. This guy will do ANYTHING to win. His drive to win is infectious.
Matt Duchene, better at being Pavel Datsyuk than Pavel Datsyuk!
Very nice, I hope he makes a full time spot on the Caps instead of going back and forth between DC and Hershey.
