Admit it, you linked to that Greenberg CI post for this exchange:
this is what happens when you have some geek who has too much time on his hand play with numbers… quality starts?
Greenberg, any relation to Mike Greenberg?

I plead not guilty (you know I don’t read the comments over there).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That’s just wicked. Linkee with no readee!
Whew though. Today’s posters were particularly ignorant and inflammatory. Although I don’t know why I was surprised. There is a group at CI that foams at the mouth whenever statistical analysis is discussed. They are of the school that hockey unlike every other sport in the world should somehow be immune from statistical analysis. And today they needed work on their reading comprehension as well.

Oh, I read the article. But as I do with Puck Daddy, I rarely read the comments.

I was teasing.
I think I have to just read the article and stop skimming through those posts though. I think having a statistical piece at WaPo is a great idea but the reactionary attitudes by some—not all—of the posters can get my dander up sometimes. Especially on a Monday morning.

There’s a group at CI (and there’s some intersection between that subset and the anti-analysis subset) who are eager to be the “know it alls”, the big fish in the little pond. They’re usually wrong, and those who actually know anything know they’re wrong, but arguing with them is like teaching a pig to sing – a waste of time.
I used to post there under a different name than I use here, but other than the occasional snide remark, I don’t waste my time anymore. A shame, but since all the really smart people off of CI came here, it’s not so bad.

I know. What can I say? I’m a slow learner. But at least I’m smart enough to spend most of my time over here. Even if I read more than comment.
Over at CI sometime last week I suggested that some of them should check out Japers’ and one guy actually wrote no way because they are all Schultz lovers there. I almost wrote that if he came on with Schultz sucks then yeah he was going to get hammered, but if he tried to make an argument about why he held that opinion he might get an interesting dialogue. But then I remembered I was reading CI and didn’t bother.

It has turned into a reflecting pool cabal over there. There’s no real dialogue. They just parrot each other’s views and take an overall dark view of the Caps and shout out dissenters.
I’m just as nervous about this season as other Caps’ fans but I also feel that it’s okay to take pleasure in the Caps. A great photo of Nicky with the puck or a great quote by Professor Brads or a video of Ovi charming the media again with his quips and gap toothed smile can make my day.

Well true. I am talking about a small group of frequent commentators who are quick to shout out anyone with a dissenting view. There are a few whose posts I like to read and some I mentally z right through. And there are brand new posters who are testing the waters so to speak. I expect to see more contributors on all Caps boards and blogs etc as the Caps popularity grows.
All I want on any board is a willingness to discuss and to keep it polite. I always respect someone’s right to have an opinion even if I disagree.

The thing that really kills me over there is the invective lobbed towards GMGM. I have my issues with him (he’s poorly managed a couple of assets, he’s given out a couple of bad contracts, and he’s made some trades that, in hindsight, weren’t that good) but when you win the President’s Trophy icing a team composed almost entirely of players you drafted and prospects that you traded for in a rebuilding effort, you did something right.

Well and it’s those little things that make me love the Caps, not their winning record. They’re just a fantastic and entertaining group of guys, both on and off the ice.

Could be worse, it could be the politics section of the Post. Over there it’s considered an erudite conversation if nobody threatens to commit an act of extreme sexual aggression against a fellow commenter.
That said, I’m a fair hand with STATA and Numbers, and I try not to get too bogged down by calculated results. It’s too easy to get the results you’ve hypothesized—instead of the correct info—just by how people were thinking about the data beforehand. Which is where many (reasonable) fans lose faith in stats. But pretty much everybody here explains their thinking vis-a-vis stats computation. —wow I just had a whole conversation there all by myself…where r my meds again?
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette
Dunny-on-the-World
No, you’re making sense. Where the analyses get interesting is where the stats disagree with qualitative analysis (“what my eyes see on the ice”), and why that might be the case. Very often, qualitative analysis is colored by the expectations of the viewer; at the same time, quantitative analysis is often similarly colored (as in “lies, damn lies, and statistics”). The truth, as always, is somewhere in the middle between the visuals and the stats, and the trick is finding the balance point.
Unfortunately, humans tend to be drawn to extremes, and thus the middle ground gets lost.

lol, so many ways to go horribly wrong, it’s difficult to choose. “Butt” I do agree about the middle ground. It’s been a fairly consistent experience for me that the most useful data is that which I have found in someone else’s research when they had ZERO interest or foreknowledge of what my interest/hope might be. Mind you, I’m talking about psych studies now, not sports stats. I don’t spend much time having any strong feelings about the latter.
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette
Dunny-on-the-World
I don’t see much difference between the two. Our perceptions and expectations color everything we see. That’s just how it is, and the only way to get true unbiased information is to get it from multiple sources and to realize that we ourselves color our own perceptions without realizing it.
Fantasy Teams: Baby Got Backstrom (Ladies of Twitter) and All's Fehr in the Crease (Six Beers Too Many)

Not me. I’m know I’m on the side of right, Damien Cox told me so!
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette
Dunny-on-the-World
Exactly. Because while our perceptions/expectations color everything we see, stats only cover so much. You need to use both, weigh them against each other, and make a judgment call. But sometimes that’s just asking too much, apparently.

I suspect that the ones that aren’t have been silenced by the ones who are. Most reasonable people will conclude, for example, that arguing with cstanton1 is like talking to a brick wall. Several others are similar. It’s just not worth the indigestion, so the smart ones lurk and the conversation gets carried by the load of stupid.
The problem is the individuals who think that being negative about everyone and everything makes them sound somehow erudite.

Obviously I don’t speak for the “management,” who may feel quite differently, but I personally would rather that the blog grow through quality, not quantity.

On the rare occasion that I actually bother to scan the comments there, I’m appalled by the lack of civility, the inability to form rational arguments, the absence of spelling or grammar, and the overall tone of downright hostility toward other posters. If my comments discourage that sort of behavior over here, I’m OK with that.
If there are intelligent folks over there, I’m guessing that they’ll come over here when they’re ready – and I’ll be sure to welcome them when they do.
I mean aren’t we all Caps fans?
Yes, but that doesn’t mean I want to have a conversation about the Caps with them. They can support the Caps in their way (which I can only assume involves huffing paint and eating cat food), and I’ll stay here with the folks who can have civil, intelligent discussions about hockey.

Somewhat related.. hasn’t Hershey carried like 9 defensemen in recent seasons?
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Depending on the situation, at times, yes, especially at the beginning of the season and then after the clear day roster deadline, but in general Coach French does not appear to like to carry a lot of extra players during the season; he’s said as much in an interview or two, as well, so I wouldn’t expect them to carry 9 healthy players if they were relatively healthy. With Patrick McNeill not ready to start the season and Miskovic questionable (good sign to see him participating in Capitals practices,) some guys are going to get an opportunity to start the season with Hershey who otherwise may have found themselves in SC, up to them to play to force Hershey to keep them on the roster.

All I know is that last practice he participated in the entire practice from what I observed; I didn’t see him sit out any drills or leave early. Based on Masisak’s morning updates, he is practicing with the first group this morning and there are only 6D in the group; 12D left in camp and practicing in 2 groups with cuts coming later today. Whether Miskovic is 100% cleared for contact and games, I haven’t seen reported, but likely yes, and if not, he’s getting close from the looks of it.
Awesome! Thanks for the update. :-) I like Miskovic, though unless he’s replacing Sloan or Erskine (unlikely in either case), I don’t see him making the team this year, since we’ve been told they’re only planning to carry 7D…

Based on what Leone is saying about the likelihood of Andrew Gordon being grabbed by another team if he’s sent down, it seems the Caps are faced with a few options. Send him down and hope he makes it through, trade him so they get something for him or send either Perrault or Johannson down since they’re exempt for being claimed. I’m guessing MP is the most likely candidate for the ride back to Chocolatetown based on how McPhee has been pumping MoJo’s stock all summer.
GMGM’s history is to use that option rather than risking a player who could be snatched up. See the 09-10 travels of Karl Alzner. Matty just needs to understand that he’ll be back.

In his post Predators game interview, BB seemed to hedge a bit as to whether MJ90 was making the club. (Someone else will have to find the link and post it) But basically he said something about how fast MJ90 and Cody are, and that they’ll be great NHL players (“someday”, or later, or something similar), and it’s possible he may have just been referring to Cody.
Based on this interview, Mackan does not appear to have any plans to go to Hershey:

If he goes to Sweden, maybe MP can stay up with the Caps.

Well, if Mackan doesn’t make the team – regardless of whether he then goes to Hershey or Sweden – wouldn’t MP conceivably be able to stay with the Caps? Really the only reason MP doesn’t stay is if Johansson makes the team, taking away a roster spot. Where Johansson goes after not making the team wouldn’t seem to be an issue…
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Unless Aucoin shocks the world, this would seem like the likely scenario.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Only matters in the sense that MJ90 could be recalled from Hershey, whereas if he goes back to SWE we don’t see him again ’til next sommar.
But either way, his absence makes room for both Matty and AGord.
Though the intrigue’s not over yet – Matt Hendricks is still hanging around….
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Technically, it is possible to recall a player from Sweden although less than ideal situation to do so. Since it would be a loan, it can be worked into a loan agreement and if the NHL team got in a jam due to injuries, they could recall the player. As an example, I posted the other day about the Dallas Stars and Wandell a few seasons ago.
It does happen, but rarely. The AHL is the shuttle league — the SEL and other European leagues, I think, have the understanding that if a player is sent there after not making the cut in the NHL, he’s there for the season.
Good to know it’s possible, but would seem a bit unlikely for a player who is still “developing.”
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
If they made arrangements at the time of the loan and if injuries resulted in a need, it’s possible and that’s all I am saying; I’m not saying it would be an ideal situation or that they would do it.
Again, see the Wandell example with the Stars…he was a developing prospect, who had already spent a year playing NA pro hockey before going back to Sweden via loan.
I am hoping that Mackan stays mostly because I think his upside is greater than MP’s. I haven’t googled translated the interview yet but I am hoping that Mackan will be willing to go to Hershey if he’s not ready to make the team. My take on what I’ve read about Mackan is that he needs time to adjust to NHL style and he needs to be here in order to do that.

Honestly, the thing that’s making me lean toward Mackan right now is that he’s been effective killing penalties this preseason. He was solid in the first game and then led the forwards in SH TOI last game. And of course, the PK unit still hasn’t been scored on.
We’re looking for a 3C here, not a 2C. If and when Boudreau decides that Flash ain’t the right fit for 2C, I’d rather see Perreault there. But I like the idea of having Mackan play for the NHL club in a role he’s clearly already comfortable with after his SEL experience (defensive center) while he adjusts to contributing on offense at the NHL level.
Either Chimera-Mackan-Fehr or Laich-Mackan-Gordon would be a pretty sweet 3rd line (depending on whether Fehr or Laich is on the 2nd line and whether Semin is an LW or RW)

I tend to agree with you on this one. I love MP, but he really has to score to be effective, whereas Mackan could contribute in a number of different ways. For the purpose of short-term scoring, MP is the way to go, but I’m not so sure that’s exactly what we need at this point.
Finding a way to get them both in the line-up would be great, but that won’t happen without moving some bodies, which could always occur as the season progresses.

Happy Birthday to the original lumberjack. Did not know this prior but per Wiki, Mulvey was the original owner/developer of the Reston Ice Rink.
Also, some old timers may be able to confirm or deny this, but I swear i remember that back in the late 70’s early 80’s, Mulvey was on the of the Caps who did a Sassoon jeans commercial. I know Ron Duguay and the Rangers did one too. But I am almost positive the Caps had one w/ Mulvey, Garts, Pierre Buchard and one other guy around the same time. Can’t find any YouTube evidence of such a thing, which pretty much guarantees it didn’t happen. Sure hope I didn’t just imagine that cause that would be wierd.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I don’t remember a Caps jeans commercial (although Mulvey’s mustachioed face would fit right in). I did remember, though, how his NHL career ended. Pretty pitiful.

Two Mulvey memories...
1. Caps down big to the Rangers, Mulvey plants himself in the crease and either deflects or distracts the Ranger goalie for 4 Caps 3rd-period goals and the win. If he’d made the crease his home he’d probably have had a better career. 2. First minute of a game against the Canucks, Mulvey is pounding a Canuck in the corner (Harold Snepsts?). Canuck goalie leaves the crease and jumps on Mulvey, starting the usual bench-clearer. The goalie? Glen Hanlon.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
From the Belanger article:
The worst part of this story is that Belanger was previously represented by Pat Brisson, one of the best agents in the league, a guy who has credible Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews among its customers. He left Brisson become one of the first customers Tacopina.
Any idea why he would do that? Why would you leave one of the better agents for one who’s just learning the game (it’s been previously mentioned that Tacopina was in a law firm, no?)

Article on Puck Daddy about having a quota of Canadian players on Canadian NHL teams.
I don’t agree with the idea of this quota. Is there really a problem with the following of Canadian teams that something like this would need to be implemented? They actually think Canadians are less interested in watching hockey because some of the players aren’t Canadian? This is confusing to me. Americans seems to have no trouble with having a large majority on Canadians on their teams and few, if any, American players. Logistically I see no way this quota could be implemented anyway. I can’t think of quota systems in any other professional sports. They pretty much just take the best players available.
I’m of the opinion that such a thing puts the Canadian teams at a disadvantage. They’re hamstrung by the quota and may be prevented from icing the best team available.
Fantasy Teams: Baby Got Backstrom (Ladies of Twitter) and All's Fehr in the Crease (Six Beers Too Many)

Quota systems are pretty common in Europe, both in soccer and hockey.
I’m not a fan of the idea. I want to see the best players in the world, regardless of where they were born or what passport they hold. If a team decides it should go after a certain type of player because of their fanbase (i.e. Montreal acquiring Quebecois players), that’s their business.
And the difference is that the European quotas are based on the geographic area of the entire league. The NHL is a North American league, so a quota of North Americans might make sense, but not Canadians.

Japanese baseball caps the number of foreign players at 3. The point of the cap is to ensure that native players have jobs; without it, every AAAA player in the US would head to Japan and compete for MVP honors.
I don’t like the cap, but I can understand it.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Right — that’s exactly my point. It’s a Japanese league with a maximum number of non-Japanese players. What I find really weird about this idea is that there are different rules for different teams within a league. I just don’t see how that makes sense.

The whole idea is dumb. I mean, are Canadians in danger of being washed out of the NHL without a quota?
They aren’t. Of course, they aren’t going to return to the halcyon days of the 1970’s, when 95% of the NHL was Canadian, either.
This is just a vehicle for mouth breathers in Canada to reaffirm that “this is our game”.

I’m not sure what, if any impact it has on Canadian viewership, and frankly, Canadians are going to watch hockey either way. It may be a consideration for teams like the Habs in signing players though.
That said, I met Emerson Etem at an event out in Anaheim just after he was drafted, and the kids out there worship him. He also seemed like a great kid. Composed, mature, and professional, he seemed to appreciate the kids’ almost as much as they appreciated him.

I think it’s a lot different with Etem. There aren’t a whole lot of SoCal born hockey players so it’s nice for those kids to see someone make it from their area. Basically every Canadian town can already boast an NHL player, and the sport is already the most popular sport in Canada.
Just to take the Habs as an example, they’ve been drafting USA born players with their early picks like it’s going out of style (the notable exception was French-Canadian born, playing at Harvard, not the Q). I’m sure if you asked MON they’d say they thought they were taking the best players, and forcing them to take Canadians instead of the Americans they took would just hurt them.
I’d like to see the rule instated just so I can see the outrage when the quote keeps a European star off a Canadian roster. It seems like only yesterday the Canadian media was foaming at the mouth for a chance to sign AO away from the Caps…

It might have been that, but I would imagine they’re also very wary of people who want to get in the business because they want to be around the players (not saying you’re one of those people, just that they are probably anxious about it).
Very good point. When I lived in Vegas my employers were incredibly strict about employee interaction with celebrities for a variety of reasons. I definitely think that’s a concern for pro-sports teams, especially when you consider it’s an internship and there may be a significant number of applicants that are trying to get access to “perks.”

The whole point of the job was to sort of learn how to handle being around the players, though, with the potential to, in fact, interview them at some point. things that I would outlaw if I were empress of the universe.
heh, the government has already beat you to it.
1) URL Fail
2) The Federal Government hasn’t outlawed unpaid internships, they’ve just provided guidance to clarify what constitutes work as opposed to an educational experience.

Matt Hendricks one-year deal according to multiple sources on Twitter.
No indication if it’s one-way or two-way yet.

Why? It’s not your money. If his agent is any good it’ll be one-way.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Gotcha. I just don’t see why he settled for 2-way. He’s not going to make a ton of money anyway, and the value has nothing to do with whether he plays in the NHL. I guess at the end of the day it comes down to GMGM having all the leverage and Hendricks not having been a Cap/Bear for over a year already.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
My opinion:
One, he’s a bubble roster player and they are more likely to be on 2-way contracts.
Two, his contract last season was a 2-way contract.
Three, if he does get sent to the AHL via waivers, he won’t have to go through re-entry waivers to get called back up if his AHL salary is $105,000 or less.
I think those are spot on. Great job. 3 is new to me and definitely an important factor. If you couldn’t get guys like Hendricks back to the NHL without re-entry waivers it would be nearly impossible for him to get a deal.

It would have to be, based on his history, I think.

Heh. I just acquired a meat slicer for the express purpose of slicing bacon. I might weave some into a hat shape, if I can figure out how to do it, and roast it, just for fun.

Thank goodness. No one wanted to see FD eat his hat.

I’ve updated my Fanshot with Today’s Waiver List. Just Willsie and Kyle Greentree from the Caps. Familiar name from Last year’s Calder Cup Finals as well: Matt Climie from Phoenix.

OK, fess up time. Someone named Jim just won NHL 11 from NHL Live with a glowing e-mail about Backstrom.

He probably wasn’t a Rink regular. No advanced stats in his e-mail.

Love EJ and Don. Good show today. Well, except for Paul Holmgren. Sounded like he just woke up.

I sure hope he hasn’t. If he does he might realize he still doesn’t have a starting NHL goalie on his roster.

Autographs @ Caps Convention
Previous attendees – is it just a crap shoot when selecting which session you want for autographs?

Yes but you get a major player and a bubble player—the bigger the star the more bubble is the other. Foe example Ovi was paired with Sugden last time.
Alright, confess-how many goals are you going to make this year?

Well can you at least guarantee fifty?

I find this acceptable, then.

Semin was with Nylander last year. But Backstrom was with Green, if memory serves me correct.
Come to think of it, I now recall you posted that you got Ovi (and Sugden) as did I.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Nope. Different time slot. Green was with Acoun. Jurcina and Flash were together in the third time slot. I know this because we managed to get six signatures on our son’s jersey that day.

You did well — in the signature department.
I could have sworn Nicky and Green were in the last time slot somehow.
DId you get Juice and Flash as your “session”? I’m sure they were happy to appear together since they were best friends and roommates. (Even if the nations that produced them couldn’t stay together.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
Season ticket holders can sign up for a timeslot on Friday night at the game. Do we have a schedule for the panels and stuff yet? I’m wondering if you can narrow down who your autographs will be based on where the stars are scheduled (e.g., if you want Backstrom and he’s speaking at 1pm, you shouldn’t sign up for the 1pm autograph table).

The full schedule is posted, and you can attempt it, but good luck. They actually have three tables with two players each at all the timeslots. So you might get the right time, but the “wrong” table.

Haven’t seen it, but I bet we’ll see it at the end of the Caps Convention, like we did last year.

From @washcaps:
Nick’s wearing four cameras: on his helmet, arm, chest, and skate.
Anybody know what’s up with that?

Yes, it was for HBO. They filmed the first practice with lots of cameras. Then the second group took the ice for practice while the first group did off-ice segments with the camera crews. After the practices, several Caps came out in full gear (Ovie, Nicky (with camera attachments), Knuble, and Poti, Steckle and King. Various players were on the ice past 4pm.

DJ King must still be pinching himself. One day, he’s a oft-injured, second-string goon for a middling team, next minute he’s sharing interview time on HBO with Alex Ovechkin.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Ovechkin told HBO he predicts Chimera and Bradley will be two personalities that shine in the show, and added don’t rule out Semin even with the language barrier.
“He speaks English,” Ovechkin said. “Just ask him.”
Yup. Yuuuupppp
