Ovechkin/Backstrom/Hendricks?
Peerless prediction on E.Fehr’s numbers are eerily identical to my prediction.
26/25/51 +18
Part of Fehr’s streakiness might be attributed to the revolving door of ineffective C’s and of course lack of PP time.
I didn’t think to realize that MP85 could be moved back and forth to Hershey, which kinda gives Mackan an edge to start the season with the Caps.
Either one of those guys would be just fine inbetween Chimera and Fehr.
Chimera 17/24/41 +20
Mackan 8/31/39 +16
Fehr 26/25/51 +18
If we got something like that from the 3rd line, it might be the most productive in the league.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
OK, so… on opening night, Nicklas Backstrom will be 22 years old, Fleischmann will be 26, Perreault will be 22, and Johansson will be 20. Perreault will be an RFA, and Fleischmann will be a UFA after this year.
Who is the odd person out at center in 2011-2012?
If you've read this far...seek help.
None.
This is what I think. I think Semin is gone during this year or after this next summer.
I think the Caps prefer Flash as a wing. If he doesn’t shit the bed, he will get a multi-year contract and play LW on the 2nd line. Better for everyone that he plays LW.
I think the 2nd line C next season is Mackan. 3rd line will be MP.
Ovechkin/Backstrom/Fehr
Flash/Mackan/Laich
Chimera/MP85/A.Gordon
DJ King/Steckel/Beagle
Now, if we were to trade Semin, not sure the type of player we’d get in return but I could see a younger RW coming back to us or a solid 2C.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
I would probably switch Laich and Fehr just because it will be a contract year for Fehr and playing with Ovie and Backs will make it much more difficult to resign him to a reasonable number. As for Laich he should be getting a longer term deal after this year. Just my 2 cents.
You are probably right, its hard for me to keep my pro-Fehr stance in check.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
I don’t think the team thinks that far ahead. Best team.

According to my projected 2011/12 lineup there should be close to $7M in salary cap room. 2012/13 FA’s – Green, Fehr and Carlson.

Hopefully the cap goes up by then. Four years of flat revenues would be very bad news

Everyone wants to play in DC. They’ll take a discount if GMGM offers something. Who’s the last player we lost to another team over $$$?
You had me at no problem.
Willie Mitchell? (dollars and term, but still…)
by Kerry Fraser's Hairspray on Sep 23, 2010 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t want to downplay the importance of playing for a winner, but I think it’d be a mistake to assume players are going to take less to come to DC, especially uniformly.
The last player the Caps lost because of money? Arguably Willie Mitchell; if not Mitchell, Huet. How many free agents have the Caps signed for less than they could have gotten elsewhere in that time?
I suspect that one was more term than money – LA offered a two-year deal and nobody else did.
Fantasy Teams: Baby Got Backstrom (Ladies of Twitter) and All's Fehr in the Crease (Six Beers Too Many)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
In Mitchell’s case, I think the problem wqith him getting term wasn’t salary cap space so much as injury issues. It’s hard to swallow signing a guy who’s coming off a season-ending concussion to anything longer than a one-year term, just in case (see: Savard, Marc).
Fantasy Teams: Baby Got Backstrom (Ladies of Twitter) and All's Fehr in the Crease (Six Beers Too Many)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I just don’t agree with this argument (and lots of people make it). What if Mitchell goes down? LAK gets the cap space back. Sure, they are out a player, and may be in minor scramble mode, but that’s no different than if they didn’t have him to begin. LTIR cures the risk associated with prolonged absence, IMO.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Only players who have been in the organization a while truly appreciate playing here. Huet, he was only here a couple of months(before the Caps starting having real success), and Mitchell wasn’t here to begin with.
I’d point to Backstrom as a pretty big contract that could have been even bigger elsewhere. He was an RFA, true, but with 10-year contracts, I’d say that you can compare that fairly to UFA contracts. Backstrom committed the bulk of his career to DC for significantly less than he could have gotten by signing a 1-year deal and testing the market.
Poti claims he left money on the table, but we’ll never know. Neuvy probably took low money(Caps fans KNOW he’ll outplay $1.15MM per!). Knuble, he wanted to stay East coast, IIRC. Flash, Fehr, and Schultz got appropriate money.
The mere fact that both Poti and Neuvy resigned a year before free agency(at low-ish numbers) points to players wanting to stay with the organization, and have the peace of mind of knowing that they’re securely in the Caps’ plans.
However, it’s definitely true that not many UFAs are not going to take lowball offers to come to DC. It’s not like we have the reputation of the 2008 Red Wings, as proven winners and expected repeat champs.
You had me at no problem.
Assume Semin isnt traded and over the summer he is offered 5yr 35M by any of a number of teams… Goodbye.
I don’t even think we can afford Semin @ $6M.

The HBO NHL Hard Knocks could be fun. With Ovechkin, Boudreau and Green, the Caps have the mouth power to be the Jets of hockey. Wonder if they’ll get Crosby dropping F-Bombs on tape. Now that would make it real.
At least with Boudreau, the chances of a coach eating a goddamn snack would be high.

Hello, NHL general managers. Look at your second-line left wing. Now back at me. Now look at your left wing. Now back at me. Sadly, yours isn’t me. But if you sign me to an expensive contract, he could be Laich (me). Look down. Now back up. Where are you? You’re a goalie in a net being screened by the left wing that your left wing could be (Laich). What’s in your hand? Back at me. I have it! It’s the puck that you’re trying to stop! Look again. The puck is now in your net. Anything is possible when your second-line left wing looks awesome and not lame. I’m fixing a flat tire.

From the Loverro article...
[Joe] Tacopina is a former hockey player. According to the firm’s website: “Joe played college hockey for the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds. He continued his hockey career after college at Springfield in the American Hockey League.” I’m not quite sure what he meant by continuing his hockey career at Springfield in the AHL. The current Springfield club, the Falcons, has been in existence since 1994. Before that, the franchise was the Springfield Indians.
Hmm… a quick perusal of the name “Tacopina” came up empty on hockeydb.com, which has links to more than 40 minor pro leagues.

Funny that yesterday in D’s post he caveated his list of four with, “and no dark horse candidate(s) like Keith Aucoin or Matt Hendricks make an undeniable push,” right before Hendricks’ hat trick and Burnside’s article on Aucoin (which, of course, isn’t a push… but a still somewhat timely post).

It’s all about winning and Sid the Kid has a Stanley Cup and Olympic gold medal.
Crosby wasn’t on the ice for the last ten minutes of the Cup clincher and wasn’t the best player on his own team in that tournament. Crosby wasn’t nearly the best player on his own team in the Olympics (Toews was, and — as I believe Becca pointed out in a tweet — he’s got a Cup and a gold medal too, plus a Conn Smythe…shouldn’t he be #1 based on the “all about winning” criterion?)

I’d bet if he played for most teams other than the Penguins, East or West, we wouldn’t care as much. The comparisons between him and Ovie would always be there, though.
And frankly my issue with that list wasn’t that Crosby was above Ovechkin. I don’t agree but I think the argument can be made either way. My issue was that the only reasoning for putting Crosby first was that he’s a “winner” – by that logic, so is Toews, and even more so because he was kind of the MVP for both winning teams. I just found the rationale funny. Nothing about Crosby as a playmaker, or a 50-goal scorer? Really, Brophy?
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.

I only care now because it seems that everything the msm does with regards to the Sid/Ovi question is based at least partly on nationality, and that kind of crap doesn’t play well with me.
All told I think Sid is a great hockey player, maybe a little on the boring side when it comes to personality but a great athlete all the same.
So to answer your question… Yeah I would still care because of the nationality thing and because it involves my favorite hockey player.
Toews is the youngest Triple Gold winner ever. Crosby isn’t Triple Gold, though I wouldn’t mind him getting a chance. And just because I’m sure someone will ask, yes, Crosby has played in a World Championship and Canada didn’t medal.

I’ve redacted the name of a former Cap appearing in this rundown. See if you can guess who it is.
[Player] made an excellent showing in his first exhibition game with [his new team]…
… he did all the small things right.
No he didn’t score a point. But [Player] went hard to the net repeatedly, setting numerous screens on the goalie. He backchecked the right man and stayed with that man. He got the puck out of the … zone when it came to him, including twice in the last minute, to help … protect a 3-2 lead. He never hit anyone hard, but he made consistent body contact in order to make plays. All in all, he played a strong … game, never moving around fast enough to impress the impressionable, but getting the job done as well as any [player on the team].
If [Player] were a baseball player, his scouting report would read: slow, strikes out some, doesn’t look like a ball player, but high on-base percentage, hits for power, solid glove, excellent defensive positioning.

If he keeps using his speed to generate chances, plays a physical game, and is willing to play for cheap, I could see him beating out A. Gordon for a roster spot as a depth forward.
Apparently, he also priced himself out of a contract with the Avs earlier this summer. If he doesn’t get a contract here, I could see him trying to go back there after a solid training camp here.

A friend of mine suggested a shirt to RMNB:

Not surprised, actually. Boll has nothing to prove or fight for in a preseason game. His spot is well-secured on that team.

I remember Milan Novy as part of my 7 y/o introduction to Caps fandom—this little keychain I got that had mini cards with Caps players on it circa 1982. Amidst the Doug Jarvis, Craig Laughlin, Rod Langway, Mike Gartner, Bobby Carpenter mini-cards was one for Milan Novy. I collected hockey cards and stickers. I had neither heard of Novy, nor had seen him play. To this day, I still can’t recall a Caps highlight with Novy in it.
That said, happy birthday one year Cap Milan Novy.

Terrible rebound control by Mason on the first Caps goal, and a very nice shot by Flash. Slick drop pass by Mackan on the second; he sure can fly. Cheese looked pretty much terrible. Hendricks’ third goal was straight up NHL ’94, except that it was a forehand move.

Slick drop pass by Mackan on the second; he sure can fly.
The sickest part of that was to see Mackan with the puck on his stick not even working hard, while AGord was busting his ass without the puck just to keep up.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Yeah, once he corralled the puck he just hit another gear and effortlessly opened some distance from the backchecker. What I loved about the pass was that right before he dekes it down lower and then passes it back across the defender, instead of making an easier (and easier to read) pass by dropping the puck behind him on his forehand and sliding it over. I can’t tell by video, but I bet he put some sauce on that pass too. I definitely liked AGord busting to the net; he can move but you’re right that he looks like he’s busting his ass while Mackan is just gliding up ice.

One wonders if the NHL would come down like a bag of hammers on someone with a positive pot smoking test.
You had me at no problem.
I don’t know, but it’s interesting. It’s definitely not a performance enhancing drug, and the NHL doesn’t have the same cultural concerns that the NFL and NBA do. The only reason to punish guys for that is because you want fans to think your players are upstanding citizens. Seeing as most people don’t even know who hockey players are, and the vast majority of off-ice issues with hockey players are alcohol related, I don’t think it makes much sense to punish for weed.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Agree 100%. No reason to do it other than public relations. The only performance enhancement would be as sleep aid. And as you say, alcohol is generally what makes people misbehave. People don’t get stoned and then become belligerent and violent.
Then again, I have strong feelings on ending drug prohibition in general, so I’m a bit biased.
You had me at no problem.
Yeah, I’m definitely with you on the last line so I’m not a particularly great judge on the issue. I just think the NFL is stupid with the weed testing because they end up catching more guys than would naturally be caught, and it increases the public visibility of “the problem.” If a guy gets arrested for possession, then fine, suspend him or whatever. No need to go out looking to make your players look bad though. Did Ricky Williams ever get caught by the Police? I thought the NFL was the only authority to bust him for weed. If they weren’t out witch-hunting he’d have gone on just fine without all the issues and baggage he now has.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
it may not make any sense to punish for weed, but sense and drug policy often aren’t real compatible. Friend of mine got suspended from the US gymnastics team (along with a couple other guys) for pot use. it’s not like pot helps them in any way, nor were they caught by the law. Random, out of competition drug test.

Very sad. I’ve actually talked to a bunch of people about the medical response at Kettler but haven’t gotten an answer. Does anyone here know how they get an ambulance up to the top level? It wouldn’t really be able to come in the way cars do, and if it did it would be very slow going, not great in an emergency. Is there some sort of service elevator contraption that could bring emergency care up to the top floor in a hurry? A teammate of mine got hit and broke both bones in his wrist and was literally lying on the ice for over half an hour before paramedics could arrive. I’d assume with the Caps facilities there they would want a quicker method of response, but I don’t know what it is.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I have no idea but that’s a scary thought – my guess is there has to be a special way up there for emergencies, otherwise it would probably go against fire codes and things like that.
Just awful, though.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I would have to think it’s the service elevator…though any of the elevators in the garage could fit a stretcher me thinks. In terms of speed with the use of the elevator it requires the building engineer….atleast it did in my building. I’m guessing that if it’s a Cap player it’d either be a helicopter (as someone else mentioned) or my guess is they probably have a pretty extensive trainer room on site for the team.
With something like this, where it’s a heart condition, a stretcher won’t do it. You need the high-tech medical equipment that comes with a full on ambulance. I’m not positive, but is there some sort of freight/service elevator in the back of the parking lot there?
And I had assumed that the Caps had an extensive training room on site, but is there any excuse not to open that facility to the public if a guy is suffering a heart attack? If they had something to treat it there, and they didn’t use it because it’s “Caps property” then that’s even worse, IMO.
