I’m sorry, but that stalking actually is a little creepy. Learning all the players’ cars so you find where they’ve parked? So you can stalk them there? If they don’t park on the roof outside the rink, there’s a reason for that, don’t you think? Each individual says to herself, well, it’s just one autograph. Except it isn’t just you. We expect an awful lot out of our idols these days.

I'll start the conversation...
F-N Poti… ok back to the topic…
1. (1) Semyon Varlamov, G, 8.5B
2. (2) John Carlson, D, 8.5B
3. (3) Karl Alzner, D, 7.5B
4. (4) Michal Neuvirth, G, 7.5C
5. (6) Marcus Johansson, C, 7.5C
I have no quibble with HF’s top 5. I would only argue that Johannson and Neuvirth are B’s and not C’s.
6. (NR) Evgeny Kuznetsov, C, 7.5C
7. (5) Mathieu Perreault, C, 7.5C
8. (10) Dmitri Orlov, D, 7.0C
9. (12) Cody Eakin, C, 6.5B
10. (9) Francois Bouchard, RW, 7.0C
I would say that Bouchard is a bit high in rank and description. I hope Kuznetsov is that high, from what I saw he is very talented but I didn’t see enough of him. I’d move Eakin up 1 over Orlov and make him a 7.0B.
11. (11) Dmitri Kugryshev, RW, 7.0C
12. (NR) Stanislav Galiev, RW, 7.0C
13. (14) Braden Holtby, G, 6.5C
14. (17) Jay Beagle, C, 6.0C
15. (NR) Philipp Grubauer, G, 6.0C
I would move Stan up to 10, and move Bouchard to 14.
16. (18) Anton Gustafsson, C, 7.0D
17. (NR) Patrick Wey, D, 6.0D
18. (20) Zach Miskovic, D, 6.0D
19. (NR) Patrick McNeill, D, 6.0D
20. (NR) Phil DeSimone, C, 6.0D
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
I really think Holtby needs to be higher. I like his a prospect a lot more than Bouchard or Kugryshev.
Unquestionably.

I think Neuvirth is a B and Varlamov is a C. I don’t see how anyone could be that confident that Varlamov pans out given his injury history. I’d also move both Carlznerson above Varlamov. I agree that Bouchard is too high and that Galiev should probably be above him. I’d also drop Angus below Wey, and Miskovic; and I’d have McNeill above all three of those guys.

The Burnside article is an interesting piece. And it got me to wondering about the usual comparison. Here is Ovechkin, once the darling of the media for his broken English, 24-hour smile, penchant for the big play, and always quotable nature. On the other side, you have a walking cliche machine in Pittsburgh who is practiced, guarded with a quote, and not very memorable in his utterances.
Well, what if Crosby was more like Ovechkin in his being more quotable, more spontaneous, more opinionated? Would he get the Ovechkin treatment of the past year? No. He’d be authentic, he’d be engaging. He’d be Brett Hull.
But maybe things will come around to where they were between Ovechkin and the media a few years ago. He makes highlights on the ice and provides quotable material for scribes. Everybody (except Don Cherry) is happy. Well, unless the Caps go out early again.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Personally, when I see a hockey writer compare Ovechkin to Crosby, or any athlete to another, by using team championships won I tend to dismiss them as serious thinkers. It seems odd to me that the same people who credit Crosby for having a Stanley Cup when comparing him to Ovechkin, also wonder if the Caps have solved their goalie and blue-line problems. They seem to recognize the team aspect of the game in one sense, but to deny it in another. It is simply ridiculous that these writers know of Malkin’s playoff contributions while also acknowledging the disappearance of Semin and Green in key playoff series and/or games, contributing to the success of one team and the failure of the other.
I do appreciate Burnside’s admitting that a taciturn approach to the media matters only to the media. I don’t particularly care about Ovechkin or Crosby off the ice or in interviews. Nor do I care for the narratives created by the media to sell the comparison. As a Capitals fan everything inevitably comes down to what happens on the ice, and while I have been disappointed by the Capitals in the playoffs, Ovechkin has never let me down in that regard. I suspect that if, as Peerless posits, the personalities were reversed Penguins fans would feel the same. Hockey happens on the ice, not in interviews.
Every year without a Cup adds wonder and awe to its eventual arrival.
by B8ovin on Sep 22, 2010 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions 3 recs
I think the hockey media just remembered that they’ll be covering a certain Winter Clasic this year and need to rehabilitate Ovechkin’s image a bit so they can properly tear him down again.

I really don’t understand the impulse behind that kind of thing – carrying someone around on your shoulders just so you can toss him into the street. It certainly has never, and probably will never, happen to Crosby unless he does something supremely stupid and unignorable.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
In the accompanying video, he gets in some shots at Semin, saying he hasn’t produced in the playoffs and hasn’t bothered to learn to speak English at all. Apparently he ignores the playoff series where Semin did score goals because it doesn’t fit the theme. Also, Semin does speak some English, how well I am not sure, but apparently because he doesn’t speak English to reporters it doesn’t count. Which goes back to the theme of the article to not judge Ovie because he doesn’t interact with the media the way they want him to. I find it ironic that he turns around and does the same thing to Semin while saying he was wrong to do that to Ovie.
by vtcapsfan99 on Sep 22, 2010 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions
Semin’s English is passable, though a bit broken. Kind of like Ovie’s a couple years ago.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Yup. I constantly see him having full-on conversations with the English-speaking guys, I think his English is fine. He just isn’t comfortable enough to use it with the media.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
And to be honest? That’s fine with me. If he’s not confident in his English chances are most of his responses would be cliche one-liners anyway. He’s a hockey player, not a public speaker.

Given the source is CapGeek and not CapGeek pointing to a different third party, I trust it is true because that should mean the source was that it was registered and is in the NHL database.
Yeah, absolutely fantastic deal if as reported.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Some will or have already said it is another example of making a 2 year one way deal too early, but IMO, this is one risk/reward contract that I like. And again, if CapGeek was pointing to an article/third party source, I’d be less willing to believe it. Fact that the source is CapGeek, IMO, means they found the info. registered in the NHL database, because it’s my understanding that is how they have their info., including the minor league salaries for players, etc.
Some will or have already said it is another example of making a 2 year one way deal too early
And I would totally disagree with them. There’s a very real chance that Neuvirth will himself into what would have been a much higher salary range this season, so locking him up now at that number is fab. (Contra Poti or Erskine or Sloan, none of whom is likely to excel to the point that their current deals will look like bargains.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Absolutely. I see no downside whatsoever to this deal. It gives the caps a great shot at keeping their cost of goaltending the lowest in the league.
You had me at no problem.
I agree, see my early comment :)
Also, it is worth noting the context in that Neuvirth’s QO (105%) for next season would have been for $803,000+ based on his $765,000 salary for this season.
Capgeek had him at $850k the first two years on the ELC. Wouldn’t you QO the cap hit on the multiyear, or am I being overly pro-player?
"#DCU is like senior prom. A bunch of people standing around waiting for a 17-year old to score."
by Bald Pollack on Sep 22, 2010 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions
No, QO’s is based on salary in the last season, not the cap hit. Neuvirth and Varlamov had identical entry level contracts, including the one year their ELCs slid meaning their ELCs ended up being for 4 seasons. Salary in the last season is $765,000 and the QO would have been 105% of $765,000. For goalies, if they dress for 60 or more games in the NHL season leading up to the QO summer, the QO has to be a one-way offer. Knock on wood, it’s possible that could happen for one or both of Neuvirth and Varlamov this season.
Cool, thanks for clarifying.

Erskine or Poti are much more replaceable at their salaries than Neuvirth is at his new one, especially if you truly believe he could emerge as the #1 goaltender sometime in the next three seasons.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Sep 22, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions
Before this season, I really doubted either Neuvirth or Varlamov were going to end up with a cap hit of higher than 2 million. I kind of expect Varlamov to come in a bit higher (he has slightly more NHL experience and he has the edge as the starter so far) but it’ll be interested to watch it play out.
and I wonder what pressure, if any, Neuvirth’s 2 year deal will put on Varlamov. If he wants to stay in Washington, and if he and Neuvirth put up similar numbers, you’d think Varlamov won’t be able to demand significantly more
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

He knows what he needs to say to get his next contract. And there are enough teams out there who can use a playmaking center that, if he can show his versatility and willingness to play a third- or fourth-line role, he’ll get a look somewhere once there’s an injury.
Through the whole season I kinda thought things were just happening around him.. he was never really driving the play much, even when he was pointing like crazy.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Its very apparent that the Caps are truly trying to keep the gang together for the most part as long as they can.

Hendricks Steckel Rechlicz

Alzner Carlson
Sloan Schultz
Erskine Fahey

Varly

Are teams able to carry 20 skaters in preseason games? And if so, where do you see Eakin getting time? I’d imagine he’d switch out with Johansson, though I suppose they could try him on Perreault’s or Johansson’s wing if needs be.
I don’t know the rules, but I just used all the names on the pdf roster in the first bullet of the clips. I assume the team’s allowed to play all of those guys. It is, after all, preseason.
If I were the Caps, my priorities for Eakin would be #1 decide if he’s a center or wing at the NHL level, and #2 build some chemistry with the AHL guys he’s going to be playing with come spring when his juniors season ends. So yeah, I’d probably sub him in for Greentree or Johansson (I’d also like to see what Johansson can do with Laich, Semin, Chimmer and Fehr)

I don’t think chemistry is an issue with Eakin right now because that’s so far away. I also don’t think they have to decide now whether he is a C or a W (they could always just acclimate him at W…). I think the main thing with Eakin at this point is just to see how he stacks up against adults, many of which are NHL players. He’s looked great against inferior opposition, time to see him against NHL players and then send him back to the W (though not necessarily after one game).

Not that I am aware of, it should be 18 skaters plus the 2 goalies dressed for the game. As I noted when the roster was posted last night; the Caps are carrying an extra D and an extra forward on the prelim. roster and Columbus has 8D on its prelim. roster.
Sloan-Schultz could be, um, interesting…
I haven’t been able to keep up on any of the new guys the last few weeks, and only know what I’ve been reading here. Gonna miss tonight’s game, but I’m really excited to see how these new guys do.
Especially since I’m moving back to DC.

More on Brandon Anderson from Gregg Drinnan
and his player agent :)
and OT: there’s a note about Ryan Walter at the bottom of the blog entry
Impact rookies, from ESPN
Mathieu Perreault, Washington Capitals: Perreault will have to be as fast and skilled as Martin St. Louis or Brian Gionta to make an impact in the NHL because he is just as large as they are. This diminutive center has to keep his wheels moving at all time to stay ahead of the play, but he has developed the ability to do exactly that in the AHL. Perreault scored nine points in a 21-game debut with the Capitals last season and his production won’t climb higher than that this season unless he cracks the top six. As much as the top six forwards seem pretty solidified for the Caps, there is always a chance the team decides to spread out the offense even more.
John Carlson, Washington Capitals: Could Mike Green have a protĂ©gĂ©? John Carlson was the hero for the United States with a Green-style overtime winner at the World Junior Championships. Carlson scored 39 points in 48 AHL games last season and potted six points as the sixth defenseman for the Capitals in 22 games (plus-11). The problem is that the Capitals cannot possibly play Carlson and Green together or it would be like having five forwards on the ice. Still, Carlson can be a lesser version of Green for the Caps’ secondary attack. As with Subban, 40 points is the basement for Carlson’s rookie season.
Michal Neuvirth, Washington Capitals: The Capitals are leaving the netminding to the kids this season. Semyon Varlamov gets first crack at the starter’s gig, but Neuvirth will be right there if he buckles under the pressure. Neuvirth has almost as much regular-season experience as Varlamov and has comparable numbers. Neuvirth put up a strong 2.24 goals-against average in the AHL last season and is almost as likely as Varlamov to catch on as the starter. He makes a must-handcuff to Varlamov.
Miss, miss, and hit, I’d say.
Also, one of the links to video from ESPN.com/nhl goes to…TSN.
I’m a little bummed that, since Bernier is also in the preview, Neuvy’s little quip about being better than him wasn’t worked in.

Not…a…chance. For either of them.
One rookie defenseman scored more than 40 points last year, and he won the Calder Trophy. He also played almost 24 minutes a game (including almost three minutes of PPTOI/game). Neither Carlson nor Subban is getting that load or that opportunity.
Since the lockout, only three rookie defensemen topped 40 points: Tyler Myers, Matt Carle, and Dion Phaneuf. Only 13 topped 30, and seven of those were in the first year after the lockout, in 2005-2006. I’ve got Carlson at 28.

It also kind of overestimates Subban in general – I like the kid and I think he’s going to be very good, but I’d say Carlson is on a slightly higher plane than PK. But that’s just me.
Plus even if all other things are equal, it’s not easy for rookies to excel in a place like Montreal. There’s a ton of pressure under normal circumstances and in this case, they’re already trying to turn him into some kind of savior. Which worked really well for the last overhyped rookie they got a hold of…poor Carey.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Moreover, Markov is one of the best defensemen in the game. Subban would need to unseat Markov, and that ain’t happenin’ barring another major injury to AM.

Why does he need to unseat Markov? He could either be the 2nd point man or take the PP2 unit.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
He’s still not getting as much PP time on the 2nd unit, right? The way to get PP points is to have the PP run through you, and with Markov Subban I don’t think can get the points needed. (this is exactly the same argument against Carlson 40 points)
Myers was 1D on Buffalo for their PP (sort by PPtoi/gm), fwiw.
by red army line on Sep 23, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions
40 points for d-men is hard, too. About 25 guys a year crack that mark. Just glancing at the numbers, those are the guys who lead their team in PP time. And while I think everyone here would love to see Green’s power play time cut down to something a little more reasonable than 1:50 shifts, he’s Mike Green and he’s going to get more PP time than Carlson. That alone will make it hard to hit 40 points.

I think Subban is more likely to rack up PPTOI, so maybe he has a chance, but in general I agree. I also think Carlson is better in his own end than Green was at this point and the winger slight is even less fair to Carlson than it is to Green.

I’m just glad we’re getting the “Carlson’s a WINGAH!” started early on so that he too can be automatically discounted from the Norris.

From Wikipedia…
The Barons would never come close to filling the arena in their two years in Cleveland. The team’s home opener on October 7, 1976, only drew 8,900 fans. They only drew 10,000 or more fans in seven out of 40 home games, and attendance was actually worse than it had been in Oakland.

Because basketball remains a mainstream sport, and until very recently, hockey was still considered fringe, perhaps? Or because in Washington, DC, more people will (allegedly) tune in to watch the Wizards than will to watch the Caps… it’s all about the money, and perceptions, and never you mind reality…
I wish I could watch pre-season away games on TV, but I don’t mind following along on the radio/webcast. It took me a couple of games to get used to it, but now, if I keep my eyes closed, I can “watch” a game that’s on the radio in my head well enough to know what’s going on.

But they won’t, if I’m remembering the ratings correctly from last year…didn’t the Caps outpace the Wiz on a regular basis? Just silly.
I spent all four years of college listening to Caps games on my computer so I’m well versed in that and I don’t mind…exactly…but I always much prefer to watch when I can. It’s a fast-moving game, as we all know. Baseball’s a great radio sport because it moves slow enough that it’s easy to follow. Hockey? Eh.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Enh? I just use it as a mental exercise. :-) I used to have to “watch” the Indianapolis 500 mile race on radio, because it’s blacked out live in my home town. Visualization is fun with fast-paced sports. With baseball, not so much; if you sneeze, you missed the entire play.
And I’m pretty sure you’re right about the ratings, too. I know if the Caps were being broadcast live on TV – ANY channel – I’d be glued to it tonight. As it is, I’m going to be lucky if I can get to a computer in time to listen, because my daughter still needs shoes for her upcoming homecoming dance, which is Saturday night, and I’m her boyfriend’s ride to get his tuxedo fitted, because his mom can’t drive, so if anyone’s Tweeting the game (goals, assists, PP, PK), please let me know so I can get it shipped to my cellphone!

Meh. I’m guessing this year’s decision to air the Wiz was directly linked to John Wall, but I feel like they showed their preseason games on Comcast last year, too. And Nats’ spring training games were on MASN pretty frequently. Don’t even get me started on football preseason, that shit’s on big networks in primetime, blech.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Given Wall’s popularity, and the expectations put on that boy, I just hope he doesn’t blow his knee out mid-season or something equally bad. The Wizards are putting a lot on one kid.
Hockey is still an afterthought for most sports networks, though; ESPN barely covers it at all. CSN does, but if you have Verizon FIOS, you can’t get CSN, and if I’d realized THAT, it would have been a deal-breaker for sure! :-/ Yay for sports bars.
I’m hoping this season will be big enough for hockey to start getting some of the respect it deserves. Basketball and baseball are American-born sports, though, and that’s hard to compete with.
We won’t get talking about American football.

Question about pre-season lineups
Do any players not in the lineup make the trip with the team? I’m thinking of guys like Ovie, Backstrom, Green, etc. who won’t be playing tonight. Do they travel with the team to provide moral support—and is that even necessary in the pre-season—or do these superstars get the night off completely and stay home?
They generally get the night off and stay home, although I seem to recall Ovie and some of the boys drove themselves up to watch one of the games last year…can’t remember where.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
Thanks Becca. I would like to know if any of the players not in the lineup make the effort to go to Columbus to be with the team. If you or anyone gets the scoop, please share it here. Ovie as team Captain would be a likely candidate to make the trip. I’m curious if he or any ot the others will be there.
I wouldn’t expect any of them to have made the trip and I think it’s unreasonable to have that expectation even for the captain of the team. Driving up to Philly is different than going to Columbus.
As Becca noted, it’s generally a night off, and I’d add that in this case, the team flew out to Columbus today and will fly back after the game.
From the roster that was released yesterday it looked like they were taking an extra F and an extra D, but that’s for playing purposes if someone ends up being injured, etc.
Although Ovie did joke w/ Backstrom earlier today about driving to Columbus to watch…“What is it, six hour?”
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
I don’t have expectations, only speculation. I understand completely if the stars opt to stay home. But if Ovie and Backstrom (and anyone else) decide they’re not joking and make the trip, I’d like to know.
We’ll keep an eye on the situation ;) My gut says no, for tonight at least – wouldn’t be surprised to see them along for the ride later on, though.
If anyone needs me, I'll be at Kettler.
