Unless he was unintentionally left off this list, or I’m having a major reading fail, it looks like Stevenson didn’t get cut though Finley did. I said earlier that I thought Stevenson could be what they hoped Finley would be, but this would be awfully quick to move ahead of him on the depth chart.

Given how long it’s taken Finley to progress you’d have to think he’ll need time in the A before they even think about giving him a longer look with the big club. Might as well get him acclimated now.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Or if they want to acclimate him they can just move him to wing.

Finley’s got a sore groin, and was sent to Hershey as a result, according to CI (via Coach Boudreau).

Maybe it’s a mix of potential and low-risk to exposure. Not equating the two by any means, but Carlson was (I think) one of the last cuts in the ’08 camp.

They may try Dusty in one preseason game and then send him down.

I had that thought as well; playing in a pre-season game is the only reason not to be sent down. But it’s curious that they’d want to see Stevenson in a pre-season game but not want to see Finley.

Is it really that curious?

Though surely OFB is scratching their heads over this development.

Also I think they want Dusty to be a Cinderella story – the standard “unknown plucked from obscurity” narrative.

I don’t think they care about that shit. I think he’s looked great and they want to figure out if he belongs in Hershey or not.

Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.

by jordanDC on Sep 22, 2010 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

No, it’s not the only reason; there have been preseasons/camps past where a player was not sent down in the first round or two of cuts, but didn’t get in a preseason game. It happened with Andrew Joudrey (and Andrew Gordon, IIRC) a few seasons ago. I’m not saying Stevenson won’t dress for a preseason game, just that not being cut in this round isn’t a definite sign that he will dress.

As I posted in another post in this thread, they are keeping enough players around for now to have a full practice while other group has pregame skate and preseason game. Not counting Miskovic, they have 4 goalies, 15 dmen and 28 forwards still in main camp so two full rosters.

Players aren’t supposed to report to Hershey’s camp until Monday, 9/27, (as reported by Tim Leone,) so keeping additional players around for practice gives them time to work with them more to learn systems and get a longer look based on performance to date makes sense, even if some don’t end up playing in a preseason game.

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 22, 2010 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not sure what you mean by low-risk to exposure. I don’t think either guy is even remotely close to ready to play against NHL competition but apparently the Caps think that Stevenson may deserve that look. Carlson was one of the last cuts, but was also a bluechip and a ridiculously fast riser. Carlson is younger than either guy (maybe the same age as Stevenson) and already going to be in the NHL. I don’t think he’s a good comparison for where those guys are at. To me, they are fighting for the same spot in the organization, so seeing them treated differently is intriguing.

I made a lot of the same quick notes as Corey M.

- Eakin only junior player remaining in camp
- Godfrey and Stevenson still among the dmen in camp
- Keeping Rechlicz around (has anyone noted that he still uses a wood stick)…I assume to dress in a preseason game if fists are necessary? Also Grant McNeill. Rechlicz is one of the 13 forwards listed as expected to travel to Columbus for tomorrow’s game.
- Keeping enough players around for now to have a full practice while other group has pregame skate and preseason game.

So remaining in camp (48 including Miskovic):

G (4): Holtby, Neuvirth, Sabourin, Varlamov

D (15/16): Alzner, Carlson, Collins, Erskine, Fahey, Godfrey, Green, Kroll, Nycholat, Poti, Schultz, Sloan, Stevenson, Wellar, Yeo (plus Miskovic)

F (28): Aucoin, Backstrom, Beagle, Bouchard, Bradley, Bruess, Chimera, Eakin, Fehr, Fleischmann, AGordon, BGordon, Greentree, Hendricks, Johansson, Joudrey, Kane, King, Knuble, Laich, GMcNeill, Ovechkin, Perreault, Pinizzotto, Rechlicz, Semin, Steckel, Willsie

by gfcaps fan on Sep 21, 2010 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I saw that; I also believe Prout fights; note, there are 7D and 13 forwards on the tentative roster and 8 dmen on the Columbus roster released a day in advance.

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 21, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Let me change that wording, I know Prout fought in juniors.

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 21, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, for those that don’t know (I know some are aware) the Q season has already started, the OHL season starts Thursday, and the WHL season starts Friday, so this gets the junior players back to their teams and in the case of Mitchell, Flemming and Grubauer, they will be back in time for the season openers.

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 21, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

Well...

Good luck and hopefully we’ll see ya soon.

On another note, I’m hoping that MarJo makes the team this year. Dunno, i’ve always had a soft spot for the underdog.

He’s not the underdog. If he goes back to Sweden, it’s because he played his way OFF the team. The Caps brass was/is really counting on him being ready to play right now.

Do you see a scenario where MP and Mackan both make the opening night roster? I’d figure they might only keep one of them although there will be an extra forward spot since we’re supposedly only going to carry 7 D this year instead of 8.

Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

by Davethecapsfan on Sep 21, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Let’s see what happens tomorrow. The Caps are rostering FIVE centers – Flash, MJ90, MP85, Stecks, and Cody Eakin.

Flash @ 1C, then it gets murky. Do they give Mackan a full game at 2C? Do they platoon MP and MJ? Cody to 3C or maybe stick him on the wing?

Kashirsky is one name that intrigues me.

Guy’s 25, supposedly good friends with Ovie. I wouldn’t think they’d invite the guy based on his friendship with Ovechkin alone.

I know from reading one of Tuvan’s posts that he played with Ovie on Dynamo. From what people saw at Kettler, what were your general observations and thoughts?

Also, he attended development camp a few summers ago. He has played for SC on an ECHL contract since he finished college (with AHL call-ups to multiple teams since he was under ECHL contract) and is under contract to Hershey for this season.
