Report: Capitals Sign Brandon Anderson
Per Hurricane Watch, the Caps have signed goaltender Brandon Anderson (pictured) to an entry level contract (note: an earlier report refers only to the Caps having extended an offer). The Capitals have not yet confirmed either report.
The undrafted netminder "used Lethbridge Hurricanes head coach and general manager Rich Preston’s connections to wrangle an invite to the Washington Capitals training camp," and walked away with a deal. Not bad for a kid who was "literally two days away from being send to play Junior "A" in B.C. last season."
Update: Lethbridge is congratulating Anderson on his new deal on their website.
Update: The team has confirmed the three-year entry-level contract.
H/t to sk8 and Langway for the info.

I’d say it’s official from Anderson’s side…This has appeared on the Lethbridge team site since the earlier info. was posted.
Yep, just added it to the post. Of course, just because a player thinks he has a deal… nevermind.

A year ago is not now. They are fine as it relates to the contract count, even before accounting for the 18yo/19yo players going back to juniors like Earkin and now, Anderson.
By my count, even counting Nylander’s contract, the Capitals currently have 47 players under contract; again the 47 count includes Eakin, Anderson and Nylander.
28 forwards
14 dmen
5 goalies
They’ve got room to spare now (not to mention we don’t know the start date of this deal, whether it will slide, etc.).
By my count, they’re currently at 46, which goes to 45 when Eakin goes back west and would go to 44 if MarJo returns to Sweden.

(And 47 with Anderson, who won’t count this year.)

FWIW, pretty sure Johansson counts no matter what this year because he’s a 1990 birthdate. Although maybe with the new transfer agreement with Sweden and the agreement about letting players age 22 and under (or is it under 22) return to Sweden means they have added that to the CBA in terms of the contract not counting.
The start date of the deal is this season; it’s only some time in March where they can enter into deals that start the following season. (and yes, the contract will slide.)
Ok, geek alert (ha like you needed one), the rule related to the season is 50.8 (d) in the CBA. Paraphrasing: The only exemptions from the contract applying for the current season are 1) a contract extension (see Tom Poti as exhibit A) and 2) prospects (unsigned draft choices and draft related UFAs) from March 1 to June 1 preceding the season for which the contract applies.
How the heck do you sign someone that’s undrafted?
What are the rules about someone joining the league via a method OTHER than the draft?
If you really want to know :)
There’s a window in the summer and the window closes at the end of NHL training camp for CHL players that are camp invites (the window closes a little earlier for players not in camp.) For another example, San Jose just signed 3 FA invites, Gogol and others. IIRC, Detroit did it with a prospect last summer.
CBA 8.9 (b) (ii): …"had played hockey in North America the prior season and was under age 20 at the time of the last Entry Draft, and signed an SPC which was signed and registered with the League between the conclusion of the Entry Draft and commencement of the Major Juniors season (except that if such Player had signed an NHL try-out form, which was signed and registered with the League during the aforesaid time period, then the deadline for signing and registering with the League an SPC with such try-out Club shall be the commencement of the NHL Season).
More on Anderson
I posted this in the Wed. Clips thread, but perhaps it’s buried. I think it’s worth a read.
