Tuesday Caps Clips: Training Camp Day 4
Your savory breakfast links:
- Today's schedule: Group C on the ice at 10am for practice and drills, scrimmage between Groups A & B at noon. [Caps Today]
- Recaps of yesterday's scrimmage and other notes. [Dump 'n Chase, CI, OFB, Caps365 (video here, here and here), CI]
- Former NHL GM Craig Button: "I can guarantee you Michal Neuvirth and Semyon Varlamov can't win without a great defense." Yeah, there's more to the quote that adds context, but this'll get you to click through. [NHL]
- With Varly, it's all about his health. [Masisak]
- A look at Neuvirth's new mask. [Caps Snaps]
- Karl Alzner's time is now. [Masisak]
- Alex Ovechkin has had his fun and is now all about business. [Bog]
- Speaking of AO, here's another excerpt from the forthcoming biography of him (you may have heard about it). [Scribd]
- And Ovi... at center? [WaPo]
- Plenty of great photos from camp. [Caps Snaps, Tic Tac Toe Hockey (and again and again), Caps Girl, dfndr13, IRockTheRed (and again)]
- The Caps media guide is available online, so print it out on that fancy color printer at work when you get a chance. [Capitals (.pdf)]
- AO and Mike Green might not be where they are today if not for a couple of guys who are back with the organization after some time away. Alright, that's over-selling it, but check out the piece anyway. [Caps365 (video)]
- What to watch for on October's schedule. [RtR]
- John Carlson, Alzner and GVT. [Insider2]
- Speaking of the kids, no contending team will rely more heavily on youth than the Caps. [SI]
- Marcus Johansson is adjusting. [TBD]
- Welcoming a trio of Caps to the Twitterverse. [RtR]
- Mike Knuble ranks a teammate as the NHL's fastest skater. [FanShot]
- 30 in 30: Brooks Laich. [Red Line Station]
- Previewing Matt Bradley's season. [Peerless]
- A fantasy-focused look at the Caps. [OFB]
- Our favorite goalie-and-Bears-centric blog looks at camp so far. [Stack the Pads]
- Back in Russia, Dmitry Orlov's season is off to a good start. [Russian Prospect]
- Five burning Southeast questions. [Sports Network]
- A reminder that not all player moves are made in July and February. [Peerless]
- A look at Caps nicknames. [Blonde Girl's Guide]
- That Ovi - always thinking about the children. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- Former Cap prospect Stefan Della Rovere is making friends in St. Loo. [True Hockey]
- Want cheap Nats tickets for this weekend? Of course you don't. I mean do. You do. [SB Nation Team Pick]
- Speaking of tickets, just a reminder that the Rink Rat Ticket Exchange (with which we're not affiliated, but which we think is pretty cool) still exists.
- This is bizarre. Apparently the Australian Rules Football Grand Final is on Saturday, per the website. Hey, wait a second... inspect the background image on the site and... is that Eric Fehr? I'm at a loss.
- Finally, here's wishing a very happy 28th birthday to the one and only Brett Leonhardt.

Regarding the excerpt from the book — all I did was let it load, and first up is the table of contents. Looking at the titles of the chapters, I can see that the rest of the book isn’t going to be any better than the two excerpts posted here.
Look, I know we’ve beat this thing to death in here already, but unless you’re writing about a championship season, one year does not a biography make.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Beyond the first few pages, I’m skimming because I’m already tired of it, but when I start finding factual errors having nothing to do with Ovi, that tells me how good he is.
First error is he credits the wrong announcer on the quoted call of “The Goal”, which anyone who has watched it knows.
Second error:
they had been on a run of 15 consecutive victoriesbefore the Olympics.
Really?
"It's always good to have vikings."
The worst part to me was the description of “The Goal” because it’s such an accessible and famous moment. And he really doesn’t have to know anything about hockey to get it right. Cox claims AO’s wide smile revealed his missing teeth. Correct me if I’m wrong, but the goal took place on 1/16/06 and AO didn’t lose his tooth until the Thrashers game on 10/17/07. The YouTube videos clearly show a full set of teeth. If Cox can’t be bothered to watch a 1 minute 25 second replay video (that he admits has been viewed by millions), his fact checking credibility on the stuff that actually requires some research is pretty much nil.

For so many reasons, too. Wrong sport. Wrong playing surface (the footballer is running on ice? Huh?). And they even bothered to remove the logo from the front of Fehr’s sweater.
Not to mention that there is something other than the English language on the board advertising. Last time I checked, the Aussies spoke English. And if you look at the coach on the bench, doesn’t seem to resemble any of the Caps coaches. If I had to bet, I’d say that the Fehr image was superimposed over a totally different background of hockey players…so, so odd. Is someone from Pensblog doing some freelance Photoshopping for the AFL?

That little comment about Della Rovere is exactly why I’m going to miss him from this organization. The Caps just don’t seem to have that gritty, irritating, kind of player in their system. I don’t know if he would have every made it to the NHL, but if he was able to play at that level for us, he could have been an invaluable 4th liner.
I love how the article mentions his irritating style, and how it drew a minor penalty, but instead of praising it, instead praises the player who took the penalty. Eh, maybe StL has enough gritty players that one more just doesn’t stand out.
Steve Pinnizotto is that gritty, irritating player for the Bears. Last year during the Calder playoffs other teams kept singling him out as the guy whose face they wanted to rip off.

Depends on team depth, I guess. Someone like John Madden or Blair Betts is pretty important (while Betts was a Ranger, at least).

I read that NHL.com article/interview with Craig Button, and I think he’s right on the mark. For the most part, other than a small handful of elite goalies, most are equally effective.
JP — do you think his Neuvirth/Varlamov comment is far off the mark?
Ask me again in June.
In all seriousness, people will point to Niemi to counter Varlavirth’s lack of experience. But the ‘Hawks had a better D than the Caps will have, and Chicago’s forwards most certainly paid more attention to defensive responsibilities than the Caps’ forwards do.
In other words, if the entire team doesn’t buy in defensively, the Caps will likely need super-human goaltending to win the Cup, which (by definition) is an awful lot to ask of any goalie, be it a 22-year-old or a multiple-Vezina winner.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I wasn’t sure if you disagreed with his point up in the links.
And I think the Caps’ success this season (post-season more than regular season) relies a lot on how much Carlson and Alzner progress throughout the year. Both are very talented (Carlson more than Alzner), but I wonder if having 1/3 of the defense being rookies is going to make for a lot of easy shots-on-goal.
At least early on, I’m more worried about post-mono Schultz, and still-on-antibiotics-for-an-eye-infection Poti.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
So post-mono Schultz, still-on-antibiotics-for-an-eye-infection Poti, questions about how much Carlson and Alzner progress throughout the year, a lack of NHL-calibre depth…
… at least Mike Green’s awesome.

True, but to counterpoint…
If, using last season as an example, the Caps are able to continue their offensive production into the playoffs, then “lights out” goaltending isn’t as critical a factor to winning games…especially since it will force opponents to stay on their toes. Obviously, this is easier in theory than in practice, as evidenced by the actual results of last year’s first round loss. Scoring goals 5-on-5 does get more difficult in the post season it seems, but there really is no excuse for the lack of PP production — either way, I don’t blame last year’s loss on a lack of goaltending talent, even if it was the Canadien’s goaltending talent that ultimately defeated the Caps.

Score 2-1 Team B right now.
Knuble (Backstrom, Ovechkin) for Team A with first goal right away. Garrett Mitchell, then Semin (on a PP) for Team B. Funny tweet from Cory:

(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
They had to balance out the talent on the teams a little better. (Guess they couldn’t have temporarily stolen a warm body from Team B to fill up the squad for Team A yesterday when Joudrey had to go to the doctor.)
Well, it wasn’t like Team A couldn’t function short handed.
