Ranking the Capitals: #21
In an effort to beat the summer doldrums, we're undertaking to rank - with your help - the Washington Capitals (only players under contract will be considered). The criteria is simple: who at this moment is the most valuable player in the organization who hasn't already been ranked? Put another way, if you could only keep one of the remaining players - because of what he brings on the ice or off it, his upside, what he could fetch in trade, and so on - who would it be? Consider age, potential, contract status, organizational depth, etc. - it's your call. And after you vote and defend your selection in the comments, help us out and suggest a name to add to the next poll. [Note: here's a recap of last year's rankings; previous "Ranking the Capitals 2010" posts can be found here.]
Welcome David Steckel to the list and Dmitry Kugryshev to the poll...

I love John Erskine, but I don’t understand how he gets any votes in this particular poll. I’d vote for Eakin (who I did vote for), Holtby(Who I probably should have voted for), A. Gordon, Beagle, and Kugryshev over him. I’d be tempted to vote for Baby Gus too.
I guess having a 7th d-man healthy scratch who is ideal against certain opponents has some value, but I don’t know how much more value it could possibly have over players who have some potential of even 4th line or 5-6 d-man status on a regular basis. We know Erskine’s ceiling – he’s already hit it.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
The Laich voters are apparently leaning towards to two 7th d-men now. ::facepalm::

I don’t think it’s crazy. He’s part of a very thin margin keeping Nycholat and Fahey out of the Caps’ lineup. I don’t agree with Erskine now (I am voting Holtby again) but I don’t think it’s crazy.

I voted for Holtby, but I could go Eakin as well. Heck, I could go Gordon, McNeil or Beagle as well. I have always had a soft spot for Erskine, heck I even like TySlo, but it doesn’t mean they’ve got much value. I get what you are saying but I don’t see much difference between 4 guys we’ve got in Hershey and the 2 guys we’ve got up here.

I think GMGM’s pen is just as strong a force as keeping those guys out as Erskine is. If we were suddenly devoid of either Erskine or Sloan, or both, isn’t it a safe assumption to say he’d be signing veteran D to fill the bottom pairing, along the lines of a Shane Hnidy, Mike Mottau, or Chris Schubert?

I’d think bringing up McNeill for an NHL tryout would be more important to the Caps then the vets, especially if it’s just for a game or two. He’s been in the system for 3 seasons now and deserves to get a look.

CP2Devil I am also guilty of having a soft spot for Erskine. It’s fun watching one of our D guys actually bruise people in front of the net. I’ve always been a fan of the extra cross check or the extra jab after the whistle and Erskine has always been guilty of that. That being said I sold out and chose Holtby.
you folks are really over valuing Holtby. He needs significant time between the pipes yet.
A danger to myself and others on the ice
but eakin doesn’t need significant development time? kugryshev?
