Gotta love the Toronto media. I think its a fairly safe bet that anyone who thinks “the bloom is off the rose” with Ovechkin probably didn’t like him in the first place.

That’s the truth. Anyway, Ted has now posted a rebuttal in “Ted’s Take” to a New York Times story that was in a similar vein. Here is the link to Ted’s rebuttal:

Here is the story in the NY Times to which he was commenting.

One and the same. Chris’ press pass that day read “NY Times.” He was their official photographer! But just for the morning vets’ skate.
Apparently the Times was not so interested in the Caps-Flyers rookie game.

At this point they have enough other people they want to push that those who preferred others over him in the first place feel like they don’t have to pull their punches anymore. Assuming the dream eventually becomes reality and we do win a Cup…I wonder what excuses they could come up with at that point.

The interesting bit is that the guts of the article don’t really back up the headline. And James O’Brien wasn’t afraid to call them on it:

Just like basketball typecast Bird/Magic to hit the big time as a major sport it seems that the NHL hopes to similarly typecast Ovi/Crosby. I really can’t spend time on that stuff right now. I’m more interested in trying to learn players deeper on the roster and start learning more of the league as I start working on my preseason prep.
With the walkoff loss to the Phillies (and upcoming Astros series) and the walkoff loss by the Skins today, the Caps preseason watch is officially on for me. I was waiting for a sign from my other rooting interests and they provided it today in spades.

I’m going to be bitter and a shell of a man for the next week after that Skins loss today. Sad to say I saw it coming, you just know when you’re a Skins fan…
Ovie/Crosby won’t get to happen every year because it’s not the NBA. You run into one hot goalie and a team blessed with some unreal opportunistic scoring and you can be done. Their D was so beat up after those 2 series they basically just couldn’t hang with Philly.

I certainly get that it won’t happen. I’m just saying the NHL feels that they have to follow that playbook from a marketing standpoint. I feel that it’s shortsighted. I’d like the bigger media outlets to help educate me on other outstanding players I’m supposed to follow and other perspectives to look at the game as a relative noob. Don’t get that all the time with the Crosby/Ovi hype.

by souldrummer on Sep 19, 2010 11:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I feel like they’d be elevated that much more on their own if they spread out all the marketing to push all the great young players in the league (and there are so many right now that deserve it). Let them write their own story by pushing their teams. Obviously they will be focused on but they could tone it down a little and spread it out.

Definitely agree with that. Very important for the NHL to have star power spread more equally amongst the markets and the teams.

I was sad about the Skins for a few hours. I’m an agnostic about the ‘Skins. Certainly they will be better this year. But they continue to try to skip steps by having questions about both lines (and ultimately lack of a running game was a big question to me) and not building with but so much youth. ’Skins are kind of show me you can win first before I become emotionally invested in them. Even then, ownership and their domination of the local media market makes it hard for to relish their sucess but so much. For the moment, I’m in a ‘Skins almost media blackout. I watch the games, but since DC media doesn’t cover my top 2 teams, I don’t figure I need to support the one team they cover all the time but so much.
Nats loss was equally crushing for me. Up 6-3 in the bottom of the 9th, they’re young closer prospect comes in and gives up four runs without retiring a batter, including a walkoff two run homer by Jayson Werth. Truly horrific.

Well the O line has been better in pass protection, just not the run game so far. I don’t know how much of that is Portis having lost a step or them not executing the zone blocking scheme. Portis still is a tremendous blocker when picking up blitzers and the effort is there I just don’t know if he’s got that spark to be a great runner anymore. Oddly enough it felt like the D line was getting pressure on Schaub all day our secondary just couldn’t stay with Texan receivers. Regardless there were many chances to put the game away and I think we kind of went a little prevent too early once we went up 17. That’s how it goes. Key injuries at bad times killed it as well. It’s unreal how much better LaRon Landry is playing this year moving away from being the last line of defense in coverage to playing closer to the line of scrimmage.
Everything ends badly...otherwise it wouldn't end.

Are the Skins good enough to justify all of the handwringing over their latest loss? Do they deserve the love of all of their fans when they seem to determined not to love them back? When the ‘Skins win, I enjoy it as a return on the emotional investment I’ve given over the past umpteen years of fail. But outside of that they aren’t worth my time or money.
Which is why I’m hanging out here tonight trying to start getting prepped for 10/7. If I want to make the next step in my progression as a Caps fan, I need to start understanding preseason better. ‘08-’09 I got involved around the stretch run and playoffs. ‘09-’10 it was from Opening Day. This year, it’s starting from camp and preseason. I also want to better understand process and other teams around the league so that I can try to understand things ahead of time rather than just hang on for dear life in the speedy convo around here.

My position is somewhere in between the Toronto Sun article and Ted’s Take. Ovie still has a lot of bloom on his rose IMO, but at the same time he does have a lot to prove—to himself, his team and his fans. But not because the press says so, but because it’s in his competitive nature to set the tone for the Caps, and not to accept excuses or pass the blame on to others. As team Captain and their #1 player, he knows, or should know, his responsibilities in that regard. Yet, he’s still only one player on a TEAM that needs to find itself, learn from their past failures, and build on their regular season success to adapt to playoff hockey. Ovie can lead by example but only so far as his teammates are willing to sacrifice to follow him. This year we’ll see who has a fire in his belly and who can’t or won’t get lit up for the second season of playoff hockey when it’s crunch time and the games really matter.

O’Brien’s article is very correct in proclaiming hockey as a different animal than basketball or other sports. Even with the best player, the most talented team, even outplaying the other team…you can still lose a 7 game series. Who knows what happens if the wind from Knuble skating by isn’t deemed interference 24 seconds into the 3rd period of Game 7. Maybe that one little thing is all that prevented the Caps/Hawks final so many were predicting.
The point is at some point during your “window” you need to keep putting yourself in position to breakthrough and win it. The detractors and haters will have their perfect argument forever until that happens.

What do you think is the best way to feature Flash for a trade?
Put him as a center and possibly have him struggle or put him on the wing where he is not as necessary?
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.
I’d play him on the wing because he won’t look like a liability. At this point, though, I just don’t see Flash being traded.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
At all? GMGM tried everything he could do to move him this offseason, right? Isn’t that what the Belanger debacle was about? I’m thinking that you expect him stay but he’s one of the pieces that GMGM will take every opportunity to move during the year. Won’t be getting my hopes up of course.

by souldrummer on Sep 19, 2010 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions
Well none of us know how hard GMGM tried to move Flash, or how that related to the Belanger fiasco. I would say probably not all that hard because he’s still a Cap; they aren’t giving him away. I think the team sees value, and definitely more upside, in Flash. They may be willing to trade him, but I don’t think they’ll get another team to give back what the Caps think he’s worth. I’m sure GMGM will have his ear open if someone wants to acquire Flash but I don’t see it happening. The way I see it either Flash plays 2C very well and proves himself invaluable to us (or nearly invaluable, as we don’t have another 2C unless both MP and Mackan make huge strides), or Flash stinks up the joint and further sinks his value/reputation across the league in which case he becomes untradeable. The ideal situation is a team that needs secondary scoring and a guy that can help out the PP (like NSH), but there aren’t a lot of suitors that fit that description.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Considering he’s on a 1 year deal, his situation is very similar to Semin this year. The only issue for both is we want to see them step up their games come playoff time, after the trade deadline. The only difference between the 2 is at least Semin has actually showed up for 2 of his 4 lifetime playoff series. Of course the 2 he didn’t were the last 2.
If there is another viable option for 2C so we can move Flash to wing and let him put up some numbers to keep his trade value higher I would be all for it. But for the moment we have to hope he clicks at center and increases his point output during the regular season again. I’m not sure I can ever believe he’ll be the type of guy who can get it done when it counts.

Will MP end up as our 2nd center (and does his entire line get promoted with him)?
Rocking the Red since 1975
I’ll admit I was being slightly snarky there but Fehr on the 2nd line would actually make sense. And so many times there has not been a huge difference in the 2nd and 3rd lines on the team. I recall one game in early Feb of 2009 where the third line for the Caps had been one of the typical early season 2nd lines.
Rocking the Red since 1975
MP could, but I would doubt it. Even if he does, Semin stays on the 2nd – although I could see Fehr getting on the 2nd line if Laich does poorly.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Many people are recommending Fehr for the 2nd line and moving Semin to his more “natural” position of LW. I’ll admit that’s a line combo I’d like to see. I think Semin’s had nearly every Top 9 forward on the Caps on his line except Fehr and Knuble at even strength.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Fehr is a better 2nd line fit than Laich, and Laich would work well with MP/Chimera. Also, if Flash is 2C, he has worked well with Fehr in the past.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Fehr is a better 2nd line fit than Laich
Why?
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Laich—good situation or bad situation, as far as I can see—can’t contribute to his line dominating. It seems like the best he can do is break-even in terms of shots and then give his team a slight edge based on the quality of chances (first is statistical, second is a hunch). Fehr can be really good or bad depending on who he plays with. Laich is just good.

More skilled, more likely to get to the front of the net, better skater. Laich can definitely fill that spot, Fehr just has the better skill set for it.

As of yet, Fehr has never been able to keep up with Semin skating-wise. Maybe he improved in the off-season…
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I don’t think you have to be able to keep up with your linemates. If you did, then the net-crashers would never have a job. Can Knuble keep up with AO/Backstrom? Can Holmstrom keep up with Datysuk? Hockey sense and knowing where to be when is much more important than actual skating ability if you are going to be the mucker on a line. Fehr may have a bit to learn in that respect (and hopefully Knuble has taken him under his wing), but I don’t think skating is going to hold Fehr back all that much.

D-man Samuel Carrier really impressed me today at camp. Consider this to not mean a lot but of all the guys who I didn’t know on the ice from group B & C today, he stood out as solid on D, good with the puck on offense and had some nice passes. Solid for a 6th round pick who was born in 1992.

It’s warmer in the new arena – the last one was a freaking igloo for Christs’ sake – so he needs to get acclimated by playing wing. It’s the cooler of the two positions.

I hear they also want him to communicate in English. That’ll be a big change.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I’m late to this, but it’s really not a big change. Malkin’s been seated around vocal guys in the room like Talbot and Orpik for years, and they obviously don’t speak Russian. Those two -and not Gonchar- were his road roommates for years too, so it’s not like he’s secluded himself.
All in all, Malkin’s conversed with his non-Russian speaking teammates and coaches for years and he’s been willing to do TV interviews for the past 6-8 months. Don’t think it’s that much of a change.
Malkin’s been much more willing at speaking English than some other Russian NHL’ers. It’s just he’s taken a little longer since he came to America 4 years ago starting from absolute scratch. Plus it’s not really in his personality to resonate as outwardly as a guy like Ovechkin, who would be a media darling anywhere.

That was a joke that didn’t even require a response, but point taken. It sounds a lot like the situation with Semin. English in private, but not public.

Oh gotcha. I figured you guys were joking a little but tough to tell.
The Globe and Mail had a new piece on it just today actually. Malkin will speak to reporters in English, I think that’s a lot rarer for Semin.

Malkin’s gooney in any language. He’s just an awkward guy. It’s like he never stopped being a 15 year old in the middle of a growth spurt — the kind of kid who has an adams apple too big for his neck.
