Forward Combos (not exact positions in all cases and all subject to change as this is based on the other day and which reports one reads about who is playing):

Red: Hauswirth (77) Johansson (90) Kugryshev (93)
Green: Gustafsson (94) LeFrancois (67) Galiev (49)
Gray: Kashirsky (51) Eakin (50) Mitchell (76)
White: Pisano (96) Bruess (88) de Kastrozza (87)

Possible D combos:

Finley (59) Flemming (29)
Cullity (86) Godfrey (73)
Stevenson (66) Carrier (65)

goalies: Grubauer (31); DeMichiel (79) or Anderson (78) (depending on which report one reads as to which one of the two plays this afternoon)

Flyers rookie camp roster, obviously all aren’t playing today

From my random observations/notes in the other thread about the rosters:

- Chaput, Bissonnette and Carrier are Lewiston teammates

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 16, 2010 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

More notes about the rosters:

- Some of these guys have played in this game last year and/or 2 years ago.

- Mike Testwuide, attended Caps development camp in summer of ‘09; signed FA contract with Philly after finishing his senior season at CU; reports were Caps were in talks with him, too, but he chose to sign with Philly (brother is under contract with Philly, too); WCHA rivalries with Finley and Bruess
- Dowling (WHL overager) is a teammate of Eakin’s on the Broncos
- Kevin Marshall and Kugryshev were Quebec teammates in 08-09
- Adam Morrison backed up Holtby in Holtby’s last season with Saskatoon
- Wellwood and Grubauer were teammates on Windsor for a portion of last season
- Dudas has played with Eakin and Mitchell in the past
- Zac Rinaldo has been teammates with Flemming (also, Carlson) in juniors before playing for London and then Barrie
- Bobrovsky, a former teammate of Orlov’s (Orlov obviously not at camp/playing in scrimmage because playing in KHL this season)

by sk84fun_dc on Sep 16, 2010 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess it just feels lazy – like they’re knocking out two birds with one stone here.

Talk Redskins to cover the mass audience and appear ‘involved’ with the Capitals to keep the whining of fair coverage down for a while.

I can pretty much guarantee when the next complaint about Caps coverage comes up, the first words out of Dukes’ mouth will be ‘WE WERE LIVE AT THE ROOKIE GAME! What more do you want?’ etc.

by TFG on Sep 16, 2010 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

To be honest, Chad and LaVar aren’t qualified to give play-by-play on a hockey game. They aren’t even qualified for giving their impressions of the game other than in a general fan sense. LaVar tries to talk hockey, and I give him credit for that, but he barely knows anything. Evidenced by how he asked JP if DJ King would play on the first line with Ovie. We should just be happy that they are at the game and interviewing hockey people.

Yes, but do you really expect Ovie to be skating regularly with DJ King? It might happen every once in awhile, but not as a regular thing. LaVar honestly didn’t know where DJ King fits in. I don’t blame him for that, he’s a football guy and at least his tries with hockey, but you can tell by his voice that he is tentative discussing hockey.

by vtcapsfan99 on Sep 16, 2010 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

McPhee has said that you really only need a tough guy about 20 games per season. Even with that limited time, I just can’t imagine when King would be on ice with Ovie more than a few seconds. How often does Ovie skate with Bradley or Chimera?

But I don’t think that he means you only play the tough guy 20 games a season. You can’t be sure which those 20 will be. So you play him any game where you might need him, and he only actually fills his role 20 of those times (if you’ve been lucky enough to pick the correct games)

According to twitter, another slapshot on the PP again

by mch on Sep 16, 2010 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Perversely, that may not be a great thing for him. Everyone knows he can shoot, he needed to prove he could do some other things. Obviously it’s good to score, but I don’t think this is going to change opinions of him unless the rest of his game was well played also.

Maybe, but Juice also had a cannon, but he could never get it off during games and it wasn’t accurate.

Right, but Godfrey has already shown that part of his game. I don’t know anything about Juice’s prospect days, but Godfrey was billed as a PP specialist from day 1. Putting in 2 PPGs with his huge shot isn’t telling us anything new (especially when Corey tweets that Godfrey had some tough defensive shifts and then tweets that Godfrey would be in the NHL if there was a “PP specialist” roster spot). Godfrey has been in the ECHL because of his game that doesn’t involve slapping the shit out of the puck, that’s what he had to show BB et. al.

@cmasisak22 If teams were allowed to dress an extra player who was only allowed to play on the PP, Josh Godfrey could play in the NHL.

Exactly. That’s how Bergeron got most of his ice time vs us last April. Including scoring a Game 7 PP goal.

Nycholat is another of those. I sure hope neither Orlov nor McNeill are headed that direction. (McNeill at least has shown he can handle ES and PK at the AHL level)

I don’t think Nycholat is such a PP stud. I thought his problem was just that he’s a AAAA guy. Godfrey seems like a downright liability in his own end, which I don’t think Nycholat is.

Pretty wraparound gives Caps a 4-3 win they deserve. Totally outplayed Flyers the entire game. Home team still undefeated in this series.

I disagree a little. The Flyers really controlled the first 10-12 minutes of the game. It was the Caps depth that wore them down.

I agree with this. Caps were slow out of the gate, but once they got going and woke up they ran the Flyers all over the ice.

It was fantastic for a game that isn’t caps v caps.

Also gotta commend the Caps for the whole ticket thing, it kept things manageable.

Some thoughts from the game:

Eakin and Mojo looked solid. Very solid. At one point Squeaks pantsed half the Flyers defense and went around in front of the goal on sheer speed and skill for a very good scoring chance. Eakin’s going to make BB think, though he did get knocked off the puck a few times along the boards and might want more strength to play at the NHL level .

I can’t decide whether the PK was that good or the Flyers PP was that faily.

Kugryshev has a good shot, but his anticipation blows. He doesn’t seem to have an idea of where to expect the puck to be and is therefore a half-step behind it, and his reaction time isn’t all that good.

I’m starting to like this Carrier kid. He reminds me of a lesser Alzner – calm, cool, collected, always where he’s supposed to be but with no flash or showiness. He’s just the guy who’s back there when he’s needed and he didn’t get beat hardly at all. Stevenson wasn’t half-bad either and added a good shot from the point, a couple of hard hits, and a good chunk of snarl to the package.

The Flyers got outskated like whoa.

That’s about all I can think of.
