Cullity (86) Godfrey (73)
Stevenson (66) Carrier (65)
goalies: Grubauer (31); DeMichiel (79) or Anderson (78) (depending on which report one reads as to which one of the two plays this afternoon)

From my random observations/notes in the other thread about the rosters:
- Chaput, Bissonnette and Carrier are Lewiston teammates
More notes about the rosters:
- Some of these guys have played in this game last year and/or 2 years ago.
- Mike Testwuide, attended Caps development camp in summer of ‘09; signed FA contract with Philly after finishing his senior season at CU; reports were Caps were in talks with him, too, but he chose to sign with Philly (brother is under contract with Philly, too); WCHA rivalries with Finley and Bruess
- Dowling (WHL overager) is a teammate of Eakin’s on the Broncos
- Kevin Marshall and Kugryshev were Quebec teammates in 08-09
- Adam Morrison backed up Holtby in Holtby’s last season with Saskatoon
- Wellwood and Grubauer were teammates on Windsor for a portion of last season
- Dudas has played with Eakin and Mitchell in the past
- Zac Rinaldo has been teammates with Flemming (also, Carlson) in juniors before playing for London and then Barrie
- Bobrovsky, a former teammate of Orlov’s (Orlov obviously not at camp/playing in scrimmage because playing in KHL this season)
of course they are! :D Lewy’s really missing them, they dropped their last game 3-2 without all the NHL camp invitees. to Sidney Crosby’s old team, no less. sigh

DeMichiel (79) or Anderson (78) (depending on which report one reads as to which one of the two plays this afternoon)
Someone had something contradicting “”http://twitter.com/cmasisak22/status/24584694141" target="new">Bruce Boudreau said the #Caps will go with Philipp Grubauer and Jared DeMichiel in net against the #Flyers rookies tomorrow"?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And yet I understood the question; yes, I have seen some say Anderson, some say DeMichiel. Someone, maybe Katie C, reported it would Grubauer and Anderson with Holtby and DeMichiel sitting out. It’s possible DeMichiel has a minor injury or that someone wants a longer look at Anderson?
I’d say it’s Anderson dressing for the game rather than dressing to watch the game…

Ben’s had my favorite tweet so far – pointing out that Nicky shouted “RED!” during the anthem. Generally I hate that kind of thing but for some reason a player doing it seems adorable to me.

Not sure it’s any reflection on one’s intelligence, though I personally find it disrespectful and inappropriate.

I don’t get it – they do a sportstalk radio show and their broadcasting live from an event. They spoke to Bruce before the game. They’re not there to do play-by-play. What were you expecting?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Maybe not a play by play but perhaps a hockey talk game instead of so much redskins? And a bit of who scored?
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
I agree with this – it would be nice to have an hour or so of (mostly) hockey.
Unfortunately they’re paid to talk football as much as possible.
No, they’re paid to deliver the most broadly appealing product possible.

If this is the case, I really don’t understand why they’d broadcast from a rookie hockey game.
There's always more to learn about Hockey.
Because it’s an event. Because they spoke with the team’s coach from the event. Because they’re showing interest in the event just by attending.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Come on guys, it’s a Washington Capitals Rookie Game. It’s an exhibition game. I’m glad they’re paying it any attention at all. In all fairness, it’s basically a non-event.

I guess it just feels lazy – like they’re knocking out two birds with one stone here.
Talk Redskins to cover the mass audience and appear ‘involved’ with the Capitals to keep the whining of fair coverage down for a while.
I can pretty much guarantee when the next complaint about Caps coverage comes up, the first words out of Dukes’ mouth will be ‘WE WERE LIVE AT THE ROOKIE GAME! What more do you want?’ etc.
To be honest, Chad and LaVar aren’t qualified to give play-by-play on a hockey game. They aren’t even qualified for giving their impressions of the game other than in a general fan sense. LaVar tries to talk hockey, and I give him credit for that, but he barely knows anything. Evidenced by how he asked JP if DJ King would play on the first line with Ovie. We should just be happy that they are at the game and interviewing hockey people.
Chris Simon skated on the 1st line with Joe Sakic in Colorado.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

Yes, but do you really expect Ovie to be skating regularly with DJ King? It might happen every once in awhile, but not as a regular thing. LaVar honestly didn’t know where DJ King fits in. I don’t blame him for that, he’s a football guy and at least his tries with hockey, but you can tell by his voice that he is tentative discussing hockey.
McPhee has said that you really only need a tough guy about 20 games per season. Even with that limited time, I just can’t imagine when King would be on ice with Ovie more than a few seconds. How often does Ovie skate with Bradley or Chimera?
You had me at no problem.

by red army line on Sep 16, 2010 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions
But I don’t think that he means you only play the tough guy 20 games a season. You can’t be sure which those 20 will be. So you play him any game where you might need him, and he only actually fills his role 20 of those times (if you’ve been lucky enough to pick the correct games)

by Gould Old Days on Sep 16, 2010 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Right, with a guy like that, for the purpose he supposedly serves, you err on the side over over-playing him. It’s a decent guess that he’ll play for games against PHI and NYR, STL, and any other teams that like to dress heavyweights.

Which is why I answered his question as I did. Not everyone has the depth of knowledge that you or I have, and if you want there to be more you’s and me’s, they’ve gotta start somewhere.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I thought you did a good job answering him. I’m not criticizing LaVar. I’m just stating what I have observed from listening to his show on and off. I’m glad that 106.7 follows the caps and has a lot of player interviews. I was thinking yesterday that they have probably interviewed the majority of the caps players that are willing to speak to the media.
I understand your point, and I understand that this is a seemingly new ‘high’ point in coverage, but why must we be complacent with whatever we’re handed?
Oh well, at least Jill Sorenson is on now.
LaVar and Dukes aren’t very knowledgeable about hockey. If you want someone who is, contact the station and ask them to have regular interviews on of hockey analysts. I think they daily have a skins beat reporter call in after practice at Redskins Park. They could do something similar with one of the caps beat reporters.
They don’t have to do a play-by-play, What did I exepect? Maybe to be able to watch the game…or for them to at least say something about the team

Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Very well-said. I like when they talk Caps because my team is getting coverage but what comes out of them is devoid of any real insight.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Haha, I listened to it and you did a great job. It was funny because you used a word (I don’t remember which one) and I just thought, “that’s probably the first and only time that word has been used on that station.”
J.P. was right…it was ostensibly.
I’m pretty sure I heard a synapse explode in LaVar’s head when that was said.

Both were game, but I question the pugilist of our Bruess. I admit I haven’t seen him much outside of development camps, but he’s clearly trying to show something in that area.

If there were any concerns, Eakin and Mackan remain the best on the ice for the caps. Eakin continuing his campaign of making B.B.s decision tougher – very crisp passing out there.

Perversely, that may not be a great thing for him. Everyone knows he can shoot, he needed to prove he could do some other things. Obviously it’s good to score, but I don’t think this is going to change opinions of him unless the rest of his game was well played also.

Maybe, but Juice also had a cannon, but he could never get it off during games and it wasn’t accurate.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Right, but Godfrey has already shown that part of his game. I don’t know anything about Juice’s prospect days, but Godfrey was billed as a PP specialist from day 1. Putting in 2 PPGs with his huge shot isn’t telling us anything new (especially when Corey tweets that Godfrey had some tough defensive shifts and then tweets that Godfrey would be in the NHL if there was a “PP specialist” roster spot). Godfrey has been in the ECHL because of his game that doesn’t involve slapping the shit out of the puck, that’s what he had to show BB et. al.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
heh
@cmasisak22 If teams were allowed to dress an extra player who was only allowed to play on the PP, Josh Godfrey could play in the NHL.
Hasn’t he heard of Marc-Andre Bergeron?
Or Robbie Schremp?
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Exactly. That’s how Bergeron got most of his ice time vs us last April. Including scoring a Game 7 PP goal.

I disagree a little. The Flyers really controlled the first 10-12 minutes of the game. It was the Caps depth that wore them down.

I have a twitter.
"Victory is sweetest when you've known defeat"
some other stuff (apologies if this has all been reported/posted)
It appeared that the handful of rookies not in the game, plus (almost?) all the vets stayed to support the baby Caps. As a result, I can report that it looked like Mike Knuble should never be allowed to do laundry (funky pink shirt that I’m not entirely certain started life as funky pink), Tyler Sloan had on a shirt that was cut waaaay too low in the front, Ovie and Nicky were joined at the hip, Braden Holtby is a Tigers fan, and Jeff Schultz and John Carlson make for one goofy looking duo.
Trever Bruess never stops talking/yapping.
Baby Flyers PK looks a lot like the big Flyers PK. Absurdly aggressive. AKA, complete opposite of your usual, non-Boyd Gordon working miracles in the playoffs, Caps PK.
AnGus took a hit early in the game and was lying on the ice. He stayed in, though.
Not quite game related: Shared an elevator with Holtby and some older ladies, who would not leave Holtby alone, despite the fact that he was clearly more interested in whatever he was doing with his phone. One announced that Joe Finley was “in my doghouse for hurting Zach.” To which Holtby replied, “That hit wasn’t Joe’s fault.” Promptly shut them up.

You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Watching the team on the PP, I was seeing lots of pretty passes and no shooting (this was before they finally scored one). I simply turned and said, “Yup, Caps hockey is back.”

Fantasy Teams: Baby Got Backstrom (Ladies of Twitter) and All's Fehr in the Crease (Six Beers Too Many)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Some thoughts from the game:
Eakin and Mojo looked solid. Very solid. At one point Squeaks pantsed half the Flyers defense and went around in front of the goal on sheer speed and skill for a very good scoring chance. Eakin’s going to make BB think, though he did get knocked off the puck a few times along the boards and might want more strength to play at the NHL level .
I can’t decide whether the PK was that good or the Flyers PP was that faily.
Kugryshev has a good shot, but his anticipation blows. He doesn’t seem to have an idea of where to expect the puck to be and is therefore a half-step behind it, and his reaction time isn’t all that good.
I’m starting to like this Carrier kid. He reminds me of a lesser Alzner – calm, cool, collected, always where he’s supposed to be but with no flash or showiness. He’s just the guy who’s back there when he’s needed and he didn’t get beat hardly at all. Stevenson wasn’t half-bad either and added a good shot from the point, a couple of hard hits, and a good chunk of snarl to the package.
The Flyers got outskated like whoa.
That’s about all I can think of.
