So nice that it was not a mob at Kettler yesterday :)
I assume the Grubauer comment comes from Peerless’ observations (and as usual stellar observations), but technically it was one of the guys in green who went down on all fours first, down on the other end of the ice, pretty sure it was Galiev.
Funny watching Rechlicz try to figure out where to go and the kids waiting for autographs having no clue who he was…the biggest clue was that he was carrying a Bridgeport hockey bag.
Great to see Dave Prior sitting with scouts/coaches watching practice and good to see Miskovic skating before the official practice started.
I just wish any of those pictures came out, but being at the other end of the rink, they were merely green blobs. There were quite a few guys out there feeling the love of herbies, but all I saw were green and grey jerseys at the other end of the ice. I still have to give it to Kugryshev staying semi-upright this time around. The kid was a trooper.

Yeah, it was Galiev that was hurting. Let’s be respectful and not make it a meme this time, though.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
See Peerless’ post, he notes he wouldn’t make it very far doing something like those skates; I think that is true for many of us; still, IMO, it is noteworthy how players do in general terms given most of those on the ice have been through this before and knew what was coming at the end of day 1. Kroll and 2 of the goalies, DeMichiel and Anderson, are the only 3 by my count that have not participated in a Caps camp before.
He was sitting! (he's the green blob)

I have a twitter.

He also pretended to stretch on the ice one time, which was pretty hilarious and obvious.

Gru was hurting, Galiev was hurting, and at one point I noticed Eakin just sitting down cross-legged on the ice.
Holtby moves really well on his skates. The other goalies were definitely eating his dust. Welcome to The Capitals Way, boyz.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Holtby since his first camp has always impressed in these drills as far as comparing him to other goalies. I think it’s more credit to Holtby and less about the other goalie prospects. A note of caution, in general, it’s hard to comment on the goalies trying to skate with all of the goalie equipment in these drills, especially the younger guys.
Holtby’s got a little bit of Hextall in him, at least insofar as he plays the game with a whole lot of fire and he likes to stickhandle the puck a lot.
If he gets everything out of it in his career with Washington that Hextall got out of his with Philly, I’ll be happy.

"It's always good to have vikings."
I posted late last night on Sunday Clips, Alyonka told me on twitter that Ovie is coming back to DC on Wednesday or Thursday.
Apparently there’s some kind of event in NYC for the league, but I’m not sure when. Per LeBrun:
Off to NYC this afternoon for 2010 NHL Player Tour Tues-Wed. Toews, Crosby, OV, Stamkos, Kane, Weber, Miller, among 20 or so stars on hand

NHL network has a “Special Announcement” scheduled for Wednesday at 11am ET. I suspect it must be some pre-season presser for the league.

Pre-emptive strike?
OK, I’ll bite on this. Is the NHL going to announce it’s pre-suspending Ovie for several games because they know, they just KNOW, he’ll do something to deserve it and they want to get the messy business out of the way early? Maybe someone read Damien Cox’s book in its entirety and the Salem witch hunt on Ovie is in full swing.
I sure hope not. That would really suck.

they’re going to announce this far out? They didn’t announce Carolina for 2011 until June.

this was Steinberg’s summary of the commercial prior to it’s debut:
Not to give away too many plot points here, but in addition to Ovechkin helping McNabb choose his local bank, Ovi also carries moving boxes into McNabb’s new home. This has got to be a strong front-runner for “Best D.C. Sports Ad of 2010,” I’d think.

Okay – now I’m confused. When was this (and the other) commercial filmed? Right after the playoff exit? Or did Ovie come back this summer to film this? It wasn’t announced that McNabb was coming here until April (I thought).

Meh
I don’t get the point of the commercial either, at least not in a positive way. My first reaction was, are they implying Ovie is carrying a lot of baggage (unfulfilled expectations) going into the new season? Is this the way he welcomes McNabb to DC? There are too many negative connotations IMO for this ad. Bad idea AND bad exection.
I much prefer the “gleeful destruction” RedBirdie noted, and Ovie’s toothless smile as Caps1Fan mentioned, in the first one.
Happy Birthday Jose....
Here’s hoping you get what you’re hoping for. I am sure there’s a team out there that has a couple million in Cap space for a former Vezina Trophy winner…

From what I’ve been hearing, the Caps are looking for a veteran goalie. I mean, it’s been in all the rumor articles.
I miss Theo too
Is there any way the Caps can fit Theo into their goalie stable? He performed so admirably for the team last season. I would think a veteran playoff-tested presence in goal would be a good thing for the Caps. Are they so sold on Varly and Neuvy that Theo isn’t even being considered, even in a buyer’s market where the Caps would have all the leverage? Maybe I’m not seeing the complete picture, or else the Caps are biding their time before approaching Theo with an offer in order to be in better negotiating position.
A cap-friendly 90% reduction over his last year’s earnings? Or would that be too great a slap in the face?
I think so. But this year’s market for goalies is downright awful. So, does that mean, there will only be two more years of Martin Brodeur with the Devils, this year and next since that’s when his contract runs out (and we’re sure the Devs will not want to keep paying him big bucks.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
Where is it written that Jose refuses to play in the KHL? I must admit the word didn’t get out to me on that news.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Odd that Capitals Insider would refer to Galiev as “usual right wing” who “will get time at center during his time at camp” when that (center) is where the Caps have been saying he’ll play since they drafted him and it’s where he played at Development Camp.

Pretty sure Galiev played both positions during development camp and looked much more comfortable once they moved him to center during that week.
He did. But he has played center for Russia internationally and the Caps have been pretty clear that that’s where they see his future with the organization.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I understand; I agree the way that was written for CI is not building off of previous reports from summer dev. camp (less relevant where he has played for Russia IMO) and that’s not a positive in terms of reporting.
I did find the reports from Leone and Carrera interesting regarding Gustafsson’s position request.
FWIW, I’m not sure as they were only drills, but it looked like in day 1 drills, LeFrancois was the one playing center yesterday on the green line.
On the international front, Team Russia moved Kuznetsov from center to wing for their last tournament. (Can’t remember which side.) He was able to get assists and goals on the wing.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Kuznetsov played right wing for team Russia in their last tournament. Voronin was the center on that line he got kicked out from the face off dot a lot so Kuznetsov had to take a lot of the draws and won pretty much all of them.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.
This is why I don’t really have an issue with the wording Katie used. He’s been mainly seen as a RW the last couple of years from what I’ve read.
If that is the biggest issue there ever is with something she writes I suspect most of us will be quite pleased.

OT hockey related: Kabanov
So Katie Strang, Isles writer, is reporting that Kabanov is not on the ice today for disciplinary reasons because he was late reporting for team physicals. Given his history, you’d think this kid would be there 2 hours early…I hope for his sake and the Islanders that there is a rational explanation, because from the summer updates, he spent a good bit of the summer training on LI so I doubt getting lost can be used as an excuse.
Eh. It was only a third round pick, so I think it was a pretty sensible move on their part. Low risk, high reward.

Meh. GMGM’s comments were pretty banal and spot-on. He projects out as a possible 3rd/4th liner in a couple years. He’s never going to be a heavyweight enforcer because of his size. DJ King is a 4th liner today and a better fighter. He better fits what the Caps need. That’s pretty much all I remember GMGM saying.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I thought he questioned SDR’s ability to ever crack the NHL.

But when you “project” someone as a “possible” 3rd/4th liner, that’s pretty much on the fringe of being in/out of the league, no? Or at least bouncing up/down between the A and the NHL cosistently.

IIRC, JP related that he had a respectable source who doubted SDR’s ability to crack the NHL – I believe the turn of phrase was that he had “already peaked” in junior hockey, so there was doubt about his ability to even be an impact guy in the AHL.
GM’s comments were as D’oh has them.
Again, IIRC.

See, I’m confusing JP with GMGM.
I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad for either.

They traded SDR within a couple of days of JP’s little nugget, and it was all lumped together here at the Rink, so not surprising.
And, again, note that I haven’t gone back to sort it all out, so it might be I that have it wrong and you have it right.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
There’s so many different guys. I’ve been saying Sean Avery a lot but I don’t want to be that big of a crazy nut off the ice and, like, not that much of the on ice. I just want to really work on my physical game and be able to put the puck in the net as well as a defensive game, as an all-around player.
From S Pepper’s SDR interview.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.
JP: What current NHLers do you model your game after?
SDR: I grew up as a Todd Bertuzzi fan when he was in Vancouver and tried to mold my game after his. But now I enjoy watching Jarome Iginla because he’s a two-way, hard-nosed power forward that can put the puck in the net and isn’t scared to drop the gloves. As for myself, I like to model myself as kind of a pest player, like a Darcy Tucker…
JP: Avery?
SDR: I don’t know about Avery… Avery’s kind of a nut off the ice, I’ve heard, so I wouldn’t say him, but a guy you had here in Washington, Matt Cooke, is a good hard-nosed power forward.
From JP’s SDR interview.

Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Doesn’t seem that harsh since the fine isn’t against salary and they can pick when they are giving up the first rounder, and they get to scout for the entire year which draft they think may be the weakest.
Will be interesting to see what else if anything the NHL will mandate against the other cap circumventing contracts already out.

1st-rounder would usually be a harsh penalty, but they’re likely to be getting late picks in the next 4 years anyways. If the fine came from the cap, then this would mean something. I doubt the NHL will punish any of the other contracts – I think the agreement they made will not let them do so.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Wait minute. The Devils get a world-class scorer at contract terms that don’t look altogether that much different from the original deal, and they sacrifice a first round draft pick?
Look, money is money, and it isn’t insignificant (although it is less than three percent of the contract values), but teams sacrifice more for signing a high-end RFA. This isn’t much of a penalty.

I’ll be honest, I don’t know their farm system. I’ll take your word for it – you’re generally dead on in this type of thing. Could end up as either, depending on who’s available and what they need.

Well I haven’t seen everyone in their system, and I’m not an expert, but their AHL team hasn’t been too incredible and Hockey’s Future has them near the bottom of the league. They’ve got a few very good players, but they were almost all first round picks.
