Sunday Caps Clips: Rookie Camp Begins
Your savory Sunday going-to-rookie-camp links:
- Twenty-four hopeful hockey players will hit the ice at Kettler Capitals Iceplex at 10:30am today to begin their quests for a spot on a roster in the Capitals' organization. [Rookie Camp Roster, Rookie Camp Schedule]
- Make that 23 players as defenseman Zach Miskovic is still rehabilitating a knee injury he sustained in DevCamp this summer and will not be skating. He is listed as week-to-week. [@VogsCaps]
- All eyes on Swedish centerman Marcus Johansson. [Caps Insider, DC Pro Sports Report, Expressen.se]
- When we finally get to Thursday and the scrimmage, here's a Flyers rookie scouting report. [Capitals Gains]
- Two top prospects will not be attending rookie camp because they are playing for their KHL teams. Forward Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his first goal for Tractor Chelyabinsk in the season's second game yesterday. Defenseman Dmitri Orlov's Metallurg Novokuznetsk will need some work. Alex Seren Rosso provides a season preview for every team (and their prospects) in the K. [Hockey's Future]
- The NHL club isn't the only team looking to fill out its roster. Even before camp begins, ECHL affiliate South Carolina Stingrays announced they have signed camp attendee David deKastrozza. [CSN/Popels, Stingrays head coach Cail McLean on YouTube]
- Some news and notes from Chocolatetown:
- Summer break for a pro hockey player means two weeks of vacation and then a personalized and very detailed training/conditioning regimen designed to bring that player to camp in mid-season form. [Tim Leone]
- Summer break for a pro hockey player can also mean on-ice training with a kid from around the way who just happens to be one of the two best hockey players in the world ... and your team's alleged mortal enemy. [Ibid]
- The Hershey Bears' media empire is expanding in a big way this upcoming season. Just about the only way you won't be able to experience Bears hockey is on your teevee, at home, on NHLNet. **ahem** [Bears]
- Just for fun, NHL11 threw in a new Bears third jersey. Might make a nice avatar, if you're so inclined. [Rock the Red]
- Speaking of sweaters, we've finally reached numbers one thru nine in the great sweater countdown. [RtR]
- F-16 gets the 30 in 30 treatment... [Red Line Station]
- ... Flash, too. [RLS]
- Schultz! [Peerless]
- A great look at Friday night's "Hockey Diaries" listen. [Caps365 (video)]
- "Previewing the Southeast Division: The Island of Misfit Toys." It's YLM's debut post for the Post. [Box Seats]
- Teh Twitterz have gone to Defcon 4. Damien Cox apparently wants to dance again after Uncle Ted's latest. [Ted's Take, @DamoSpin]
- Finally, happy 62nd birthday to Joe Lundrigan.

Evgeny Kuznetsov scored his first...
And a pretty sick one it was – on a breakaway, very confidently… here is the link:

I do not understand Cox at all, but then why should I? Ted is entitled to his opinions (right and wrong) and that’s why he has a blog. That doesn’t require Cox to go on twitter to make an ass out of himself. Oh, maybe it does.
I know Ted says he wouldn’t ban him from Verizon, but I wish he would. If I see him in the press box some night, I might make it my duty to make him wish he wasn’t there.
"It's always good to have vikings."
I think that while the other people in the press box wouldn’t heckle him, there might be some tension in the air that makes him uncomfortable (sort of like when everyone stares at the only kid who got an A on the test, or like when Ovechkin owned Milbury’s “I’m your daddy now” comment and before that other person provoked MM).

The DVD is the one coming out on November 16, Alex Ovechkin The Great 8? I thought it was finished but apparently not. Thanks for the report!
Speaking of Ovi,
This weekend I was browsing through the Facebook pictures of one of the kids from my neighborhood (or more accurately, a now grown up kid from our neighborhood who’s now 23). I recognized the “Sochi 2014” logo and a familiar face. I looked closer at that picture and discovered it was of that grown kid and Ovi that was taken at Dulles airport just after the Olympics.
The timing is ironic, considering all the negative publicity that Ovi had gotten during the Olympics for not wanting to talk to the North American press (and the incidents with the Russian photographers).

Rookie Camp Video
I’m uploading some video from Rookie Camp today if anyone wants to take a look:
- Shot length of ice – www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSFaaHbzOVc
- Holtby Taking Shots – www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mFitb6FQ2M
these are the first two. Have about 10
You could also post one link to your “channel”…
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Ovie will be back in town on Wednesday/Thursday
vtcapsfan99 @AlyonkaLarionov when is Ovie coming back to DC? We miss the great 8!
AlyonkaLarionov @vtcapsfan99 from what I hear, Wednesday/Thursday!
Thanks to all attending the Camp for the wonderful links to videos and photos. If I can’t be there at least I can see snapshots of the Camp.
Loved the little green puddle of Galiev at the end of the ice. Betcha’ he’s going to be working really hard on his conditioning this upcoming season—the skill is already there and I’m sure he’s due another growth spurt. I forget sometimes just how young these guys are.
The images of Holtby, Eakin, and especially Mackan are my favorites.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

![Via Traktor Chelyabinsk's website, here's Evgeny Kuznetsov graciously accepting a handmade hat from some of his fans.
The Traktor fans were aware of the NA tradition of the hat trick, and in honor of his strong performance at World Juniors, they made him one of his very own:
"It is known that the ocean [overseas leagues - ed.] has a tradition: after the execution of a hat-trick fans throw on the ice caps. Hat-trick in a literal translation - "hat trick". Kuznetsov played in the World Cup just two such trick: in the group stage, he scored 3 goals in the gate the Latvian team, and in the semi-finals three times, struck the gate of Canada. These two points are noted."
