one of the reasons I moved into the city was to be closer to the VC. Costs less to get to games, and way easier to justify a post-game beer or three when the metro ride is only 10 minutes.

I used to live just a 5-10 minute walk from Verizon…that’s the only thing I regret about moving out of the city.
Of course now I live just a 5-10 minute walk from Kettler and they’re actually there more, so it all works out ;)
You know you’re a true fan when your living situation is in part dictated by getting to & from the VC…

How does Dater think Nieuwendyk should go because “he was unquestionably the best guy on faceoffs I’ve ever seen, and he put up consistently excellent scoring numbers through a very long career”? Or that Gilmour should be a HoFer?
Nieuwendyk was a 45+ goal scorer his first four years in CGY and never hit 40 goals again. Gilmour had two great years his first two full seasons in Toronto, scoring more points than anyone in the league except…Adam Oates, who was still logging 50 assist seasons in his late 30s. If you want to vote Joe Nieus in because of 3 rings (or for Gilmour’s one he got with the Flames), great , but Oates has outscored both those guys and in Gilmour’s case, did it in more than 100 less games.
Just ‘cause a brother ain’t got no rings don’t mean he shouldn’t get no love.

Nieuwy went to Cornell which in and of itself is more than enough reason to give him the benefit of the doubt, right F&B?

Adrian Dater lost me when he gave a “Yes” for Claude Lemieux, but said that Brendan Shanahan was “on the bubble.”
I don’t know why I even bother to read his stuff. I agree with him less than 1% of the time.
Up front he offers a decision rule…
…if I’m going to vote ‘yes’, I need at least one great year. That doesn’t mean a guy needed to win the Hart Trophy or a Vezina or a scoring title. But I need at least one year where you say "OK, he was the best player on the ice more often than not…
So, he votes no on Rod Brind’Amour. Fair enough. He was up front about his rule, and he applied it.
Now, where was Claude Lemieux’ “great year?” And in the playoffs, Brind’Amour and Lemieux have almost precisely the same per-82 game numbers in goals and points. Brind’Amour’s plus/minus is worse because he had vastly more important defensive responsibilities. Lemieux gets in essentially because he played with Patrick Roy (on two different franchises winning Stanley Cups) and Martin Brodeur.
If you've read this far...seek help.
.....
Dater’s the Avs beat writer. He got to see Lemieux every day, so he’s biased.
Hell, he even wrote a book about it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if a reserved type like Oates would take a little longer to get in the Hall. He’s a no-doubter in my mind, though. Perhaps a coaching career will round out the credentials?
is it cold yet?
We all know what a great talent Adam Oates was on the ice. The guy was a great playmaker and passer, and could make anyone better by playing with him. Chris Simon didn’t score 29 goals one year because he was a great scorer… Oates set him up, and someone who had good hands could have probably potted 50 that year for the Caps. Bondra didn’t play much with Oates, as they didn’t click right (Bondra was always playing to get his own shot, Oates was a set up guy…)
Adam Oates’ candidacy for the Hall has some serious drawbacks though:
1) Oates was never the best player on the team he was on. He played in Detroit with Steve Yzerman, St. Louis with Brett Hull, Boston with Ray Bourque, Washington with Bondra, Philly with Lindros, Anaheim with Kariya… he was always among the top players on his team, but never was the top dog.
2) Oates never did win the Cup… yes that is something that can hold you back.
3) Oates played on 7 different NHL teams, wearing out his welcome at each destination after a few years. Sure when he got to teams they got better, but other than Edmonton at the end of his career, he never really left on good terms with anyone.
4) Oates wasn’t much with the media. He would barely be around in press conferences, and barely talk. Folks I know who know him say he is very shy, and doesn’t like speaking in public. Some writers and folks might take this as aloofness. Either way, it doesn’t help his Hall cause.
Eventually Oates will be enshrined, he was too good a player not to be. He is arguably the best player eligible for enshrinement but not in…

JTG did great work with the transportation breakdown, and it did mention that it’s cheaper to park in a garage than to use the metro (in most cases). However, the post could have been even more helpful if it told people they MUST park in a garage when they drive. DC parking enforcement now requires meter payment till 10:30 6 days a week, no more than two hours, and no re-feeding the meter. And they issue tickets with gusto down @ the The Phone Booth! At an average of $15/game that’s around $750 bucks for parking including preseason and all the way thru April (but not including gas and what the DC streets do to a car).
Country Gentlemen's Pig Fertilizer Gazette
Dunny-on-the-World
Another good reason for Metro? Night time contstruction along I-66/toll road corridor. I switched to Metro last year simply to cut down on driving and wear and tear on the car; it was already more expensive for two than driving. I was thinking about switching back to the car this year, but then I realized that it probably drive me nuts going home, so I’ll probably stick with the train after all on most nights.

Metro’s worth it, for me. He’s right about College Park, though, and there’s generally plenty of parking when I get there. Besides, you don’t have to fight 495 to get to the College Park Metro.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
We ride from West Falls Church, and I don’t have any beltway issues to get there. So the cost differential wasn’t that great to begin with. And because we’re getting there around 5:30 – 6:00, people have already begun clearing out from the workday, so parking is easy to find.
"It's always good to have vikings."

Yup, I find the same thing with College Park wrt parking. I usually get there about 5:30 or so. I need to figure out how I’m working this season, though – I’d like to get down there just a tad earlier if possible. I hate having to gulp my dinner.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
We usually go through Greenbelt Metro, since there’s an exit for it off 495, and we only have to be on there like two exits before we hit it.

I’m going to try to drive in for the preseason game, I think. We usually just drive up to Pentagon City and get on there, but that’s a fuckin’ hassle. I’d rather have the hassle of a parking garage that will let me get out and home faster.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
That was my MO before I moved into the city; the only problem with Pentagon City is none of the good (read: free) parking lots are very close to the Metro entrance.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Yeah, we always park at the mall and walk down through there. I’m really tired of doing that.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
There is, but if you go to College Park, you take 95 to Route 1 direct and evade 495 altogether. It does entail going down Rt 1 a bit, but it’s a slightly shorter and cheaper ride.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I’d rather deal with 495 than Route 1/Paint Branch Parkway. I HATE Route 1.

Plus, it’s much easier to exit out of Greenbelt and get (literally) right back onto 495 than to either go back up 1 or back up 212 to the 495 exits.

I didn’t find that. 495 is absolutely jammed most of the time in that area – the last three times I tried it, it took me 20 minutes to go two exits.

Metro works for me. I’m either coming from Laurel (where I live) or Bethesda (where I work). From Bethesda, I just use the Red Line from Friendship Heights, and I park at Greenbelt if I’m coming from Laurel. The main thing is, I hate driving in DC. The only issue I run into is how crowded the Metro stop at VC is when the game ends. That’s not nearly as much of a problem since I moved to Laurel though – had to go to Shady Grove before that.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
If it’s not an “important” game or a friday/weekend game, we usually leave with about 8 or 9 minutes to go in the third to avoid the traffic.

It’s an option, but I hate leaving early, regardless of the game. Sometimes I just wait until a few minutes after the game ends before leaving, and actually miss the worse of the crowds that way.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Eh. We usually have to rely on the charity of others to get our tix anyway, and since I have to be up so early in the morning and get back to the Baltimore area, I really have no other option.
I think the earliest I left a game was with like 15 mins left in the third against Montreal during the WJC final. I got home for the end of the third and the OT.

Man, at that point, I’d just invest in a nice TV and recliner and watch from home.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I was thinking the same thing. I love going to the games, but if I didn’t live so close I probably wouldn’t have purchased season tickets. Aside from loving hockey in general, proximity and accessibility to the arena were huge selling points. Plus the fact that it was nearing the end of the 06-07 season, so there were great seats available.
You gotta run to a window and say: "Hey, these floors are dirty as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"
Yeah pretty much. Between the assholes at the arena, lines at the bat’troom, overpriced food, and travel time getting there, I’ve found it’s mostly better to just watch the games at home. The whole experience is just less of a hassle.
At one point, I thought about someday becoming an STH, but I just don’t think it’s worth it any longer.

We have always driven up I-95/395 coming from the Woodbridge area. Found it both more reasonable and timely to drive and park in a lot; we’re usually home by 10:30.
Have to agree. With 3 dogs, the car is the only sensible option. It provides necessary flexibility before and after games. I can run home and take care of the dogs, or do a post-game errand (there are lots of those during a season). On those oh-so-rare occasions I can even hang out with friends after a game. Metro makes adds so much time to anything done on game night that it becomes unrealistic.

Where do you driving folks usually park?
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
We usually park at the lot located at 9th and New York. They’re supposed to be building there at some point in the future, but so far it’s just the parking lot. The negatives are the rate increases for special games going from $10 – $15 – $20, but can’t beat the convenience of exiting directly onto 9th Street.

Capital One Ovi Commercial
Did anyone else see the new Capital One Vikings commercial yesterday? Saw it on Channel 4 while watching the 6:00 – 7:00 news. It relates to the rebranding of Chevy Chase to Capital One and features Ovi! It was fabulous! I have not been able to locate it anywhere on line as yet.
Funny, I’ve been with Chevy Chase for years and am fleeing that merger as fast as I can run.
Too much marketing and staging going on and not enough being done to actually accomplish anything in my book.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
So have we, but I’m sticking with it for now. Just too darn convenient. What hate about bank mergers is that you always end up losing a freebie when they change the accounts to the surviving bank’s branding.
We did a double take when the commerical ran and I had to roll back the DVR to make sure I’d actually seen that.

I understand, but it’s not convenient for me anymore, as I live in Baltimore. I was looking at PNC and M&T but decided that my best bet was Bank of America, since I travel so dang much. As soon as my direct deposit comes through to the new account, I’ll transfer all my bill pays over.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
We did the same thing – the double-take that is. He really looked like he enjoyed it!
We’re also going to stick with them for now, not only for the convenience, but the small-town bank experience we receive at our branch.
Besides, I’ve also had a Capital One credit card for years, so maybe I can get a new benefit? Hah!

Puck Prospectus on Value Players
Best part:
Say Hello to My Little Friends
To get secondary scoring for the best possible price, supplement your roster with some talented but smaller players. I’m not just saying that to get on Iain Fyffe’s good side, it’s seriously easier to find underpaid little guys than underpaid big guys.
Just look at all the smaller guys on our value list – do you think that Burrows, Parise, Hornqvist and Greene would be obtainable for the same salary if they stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Dustin Penner? Smaller players of all different styles and roles come at discount prices, whether its Frans Nielsen (GVS 8.6), Mike Weaver (GVS 6.0) or Derek Roy (GVS 4.8).
It’s not hard to find little guys who consistently tear up the AHL. There are literally dozens of no-risk smaller players that could easily bag 30 points in the NHL for league-minimum contracts. Check out Keith Aucoin, David Desharnais, Chris Bourque, Martin St. Pierre, Corey Locke and Jason Krog, to name just a few.
It’s funny/sad because it’s true.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Ties in nicely with our Jurcina tangent yesterday. It may be the “new” NHL, but GMs can’t help themselves when it comes to big bodies.

Fleischmann could score 40 goals in the regular season and I wouldn’t care at all. He’s gonna have to prove himself in the playoffs; I could care less about his regular season accomplishments. In fact that goes for the whole team. Semin, Green, and Flash could all have big regular seasons – woop dee frickin doo. Show up in the playoffs this year boys cause the regular season means dick.
They need to at least play decently. This season, the Lightning will likely be a playoff team – but not a threat to take the conference unless the Caps really fall apart.

See you in April then?
Here’s a suggestion: instead of looking at a guy’s regular season stat line – because you’re right, it’s meaningless – watch how he’s playing. If Flash is going into high-traffic areas, playing the center position responsibly, killing penalties well, etc. during the regular season, chances are it won’t be meaningless come playoff time. If he’s floating around and scoring 25 goals, then you probably know what to expect in the second season.
Regular season results are largely meaningless. Regular season processes and habits are not.

Regular season results are largely meaningless. Regular season processes and habits are not.
Needs to be chiseled over the Caps’ dressing room door and stenciled along the ramp to the ice at the VC.

Yeah, that was my point. I will still watch the Caps in the regular season and enjoy their successes. I want to see Ovi score 60 goals. I want to see Mike Green compete for a Norris trophy again this year. I really want to see Flash do what you mentioned above, cause the Caps really don’t need much more offense. They outscored the league by something like 50 goals last season. This team can fall asleep and still make the playoffs; I just want to see them dig hard in April.
I agree with you though. I’ve just seen this team coast through so many seasons and then disappear when it matters most.
Regular season results are largely meaningless. Regular season processes and habits are not.
And the difference between those statements is going to rest heavily on the coaches. Here is what it could mean. The “processes and habits” are largely out there for all to see and evaluate. Do the Caps to the little things, do them right, do them consistently? Do they take shortcuts? If they don’t do the former and do take the latter, that’s a formula for losing bunches of standings points.
Still, the Caps might not come near their 121 points from last year, even if they do take care of the little things and avoid shortcuts. And that’s where the bench comes in. If the playoffs are the prize here, then perhaps you don’t have Mike Green or Alex Ovechkin out there for the last 30 seconds of a power play. You might miss out on half a dozen power play goals over a season that way, and perhaps a win or two. But won’t they be fresher in April?
You have that player who is nicked sit one extra game, instead of getting him back into the lineup. If that happens to four or five players, you might miss their talent on the ice for what might be an extra 3-4 points lost in the standings, but then they don’t aggravate injuries, and yes, they too are fresher in the end.
You might be less tolerant of a player coasting through practices or games, even in the grind of January and February, perhaps sitting him in the process, giving him the opportunity to “see the game better” from the press box (or some other similar public excuse). Would that compromise a game result? Maybe, but it’s a reminder, too, that there are no shortcuts if they’re going to be successful in May and June.
Giving up 10-12 standings points from last year due to lazy play would be disappointing, if not down right unacceptable. Giving up 10-12 points in an effort to manage the roster more efficiently with an eye toward the spring is showing foresight, knowing what’s important.

If Morrison convinced Mitchell he scored 25 goals any time in the relevant past, I can’t imagine how exaggerated his description of the team was.

Haha.
I found it on HF Boards (I feel like I need to shower). For those who aren’t in the in-crowd, it sounds like some woman with a checkered, possibly criminal, past sent an e-mail to the puckthemedia blog claiming she has dirt on Crosby that will make him the next Tiger Woods…or something like that. It sounds completely reliable.

Apparently we were just too stupid to realize we need to get Kipper and Sarich for Semin & Varly. Now that they have shown me the way, it makes perfect sense.

I read through all of that waiting for the interesting part and never found it.
The Caps are no match for the Canucks because of Luongo? Here are four numbers from last seasons playoffs:
.895, 3.22 — .908, 2.41
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
I stopped reading here
The Washington Capitals are another such team. The Caps have struck out in their search for a capable NHL defender and the fans are starting to get antsy because their options are beginning to dwindle now that Willie Mitchell is off the market. Washington’s current d-corps looks like this:
Green – Shultz

Uh? What? Last I checked the Caps had a veteran defenseman who has logged a bunch of games (albeit for a bunch of different teams) but is reasonably effective in most roles.
Oh, and there’s this other guy too, who score World Junior Gold Medal OT Goals…
And what about that other kid from Alberta? You’d think they’d know something about a guy who played his junior hockey IN CALGARY….

Take out the goalies in that trade (making it Sarich and Backlund for Semin) and it’s a lot less ridiculous.

The caps have a ton of prospects down the middle. Would love to see Sarich gone in return for a Center who can develop until we trade Jokinen again.
he’s talking about the Washington Capitals, right? The same Washington Capitals whose biggest hole is not finding a defenseman, but a second-line center? Yeah, the Capitals are deep at center.
And
The Caps need a goalie and need a goalie badly.
really? REALLY? Are these guys serious? And the answer to the goaltending problems is……Kipper?
too much stupidity from me, and Mike Wise isn’t even the one writing it.

That one guy did have a point about Belanger and what would happen to the Sarich deal if we end up signing him:
“What’s the deal with Eric Belanger? I thought he had signed in Washington… did that fall apart? Because if not, there’s 1.8M less that they’d have to spend… making a Sarich acquisition difficult until they deleted another player, no?
Having said that, Boyd Gordon played for Brent in Red Deer… I wouldn’t mind him, that’s for sure."

I really can’t think Adrian Dater is credible when he says Yes to Pavel Bure and No to Adam Oates.
You can argue and compare Bure and Bondra, but Oates….that’s just so wrong especially when he does make the point that guys like Dick Duff are HoF.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.

Only one I agree with there is Berube. You’re supposed to be good at whatever it is your Rushmore’ing, so that eliminates Bradley. Hunter and Gould too infrequent.
I say Berube, Brashear, May, and Peat.
