Things are usually quieter on the weekends, especially during the summer.
I did see one thing that kinda made me happy, though – the morning commute was an absolute disaster this morning. It reminded me that the kids go back to school today, because traffic is always a disaster the first day back. We’re in the homestretch to hockey season!
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
his counterpart, Green, is more of a forward than a defenseman. Green has been a finalist for the Norris Trophy the past two seasons, but has not won for a simple reason: he doesn’t play defense. That simple statement is the problem not just with Green, but the whole lot.
I have problems with the KoL piece when he makes blanket statements like this. I agree with the argument that the team could use stay-at-home veteran type of defenseman. But he seems to find very little value in any of the Caps’ d-corps, and relies on a bit of hyperbole at the end.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."
Agreed. It’s neither fair nor accurate. Neither is this, from the same piece:

That’s like saying a Quarter Pounder is the closest thing to Beef Wellington I could acquire right now. First, shut down defensemen (like Beef Wellington) can’t be found on every block; and second, Souray (like the hamburger to its rarer relative) is a dim, if vaguely recognizable imitation of a shut down defenseman (in that he plays the position).
More to the point, how can a defenseman be considered of the “shut down” variety when he is -76 over the last eight seasons? If anything, he is a dim reflection of Green. Twice since the lockout he has topped 50 points, and twice he has topped ten power play goals (including 19 in 2006-2007, second among all players). He also happens to be -64 since the lockout.

Maybe he meant that Souray shuts it down in his own zone.
And how could he even be considered “the closest thing to a shut-down defenseman that the Capitals could acquire right now”? You don’t think the Kings would take John Carlson for SdD du jour Willie Mitchell? There are plenty of ways to acquire players… via unsubstantiated trade rumor is but one.

by Rather Bengt on Aug 30, 2010 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I hated that part too. Whenever I read Souray rumors I think “please no.”
I have to admit I wanted Mitchell but as much for intangibles such as his leadership as for his style of play. But adding someone like Souray just for the sake of adding makes no sense to me. The KoL blogger acts like Carlson and Alzner have already been on this roster for years whereas I’m excited to see what these two can do with a full NHL season. Right there that’s a huge positive change to the defense roster—the only downside IMO is their inexperience.

If we trade for Souray I might have to check myself into a mental facility. I saw his “best” years in Montreal and they weren’t that great – all he has is a great shot from the point, he’s nowhere near an effective shutdown and his contract is too high to care that he’s at least a marginal upgrade at 6/7.
“…all he has is a great shot from the point…”

So apparently the Rangers are about to sign Tim Kennedy. That puts them up to 23 people under contract and they still don’t have Staal signed.
This got me thinking about that Kings of Leonsis piece. I’d much rather have Michal Rozsival at 5 million for the next two years than Sheldon Souray for two yearst at 5.8 million, and he’s much more of the “shut-down” defenseman type than Souray is, and if the Rangers could find a willing taker for his contract (or Wade Redden’s, for that matter), they would ship him out in a heartbeat.
That’s not to say I think that Rozsival would be a good fit on the caps or even that I want him here. But there are plenty more D-men who could be considered “on the market” who would be better fits contract-wise and skill-wise than Sheldon Souray.
I don’t think the KoL piece was seriously suggesting Souray is a good option? They were just lamenting the dearth of shut-down defensemen, and using Souray’s name to drive home the point.
It looks like GM is engaged in a high-stakes game of chicken with the rest of the GMs around the league. He knows some teams have to shed salary. The Caps have some cap space and some depth to their prospect pool. Right now he’s just waiting to see which team blinks first. I hope that’s what’s going on, anyway.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Souray is the closest thing to a shut-down defenseman that the Capitals could realistically acquire right now (and even that’s a stretch).
That’s more the statement with which I’m taking issue. There are closer things to shutdown blueliners than Sheldon Souray that the Caps could reasonably acquire right now. Other names that spring to mind include Eric Brewer, Roman Hamrlik, Steve Staios, Barrett Jackman, or heck even Jeff Finger.
The Caps are in a pretty good position, if they want to deal. If you look at a 23-man roster, assuming that Perreault and Johansson are on it (14F, 7D, 2G), and even if you assume that Alzner hits all of his bonus targets, the Caps would have almost $3 million in cap room.
The flip side of that is that it is a roster with a really soft underbelly. The 6/7 defensemen are still John Erskine and Tyler Sloan, and a bottom-of-the-lines forward group of Perreault, Johansson, King, Gordon, etc., will be cheap, but will have next to no punch (except King’s unique skills) and/or will be inexperienced.
There is a thought that the Caps could go all the way to the trading deadline with more or less this roster and still be a playoff team, but on the other hand, given the inexperience on this roster, the thinness of the defense, and the difficult situtations more than a few teams are likely to face getting to the cap by opening night, you’d almost think that the Caps have to have other moves left in them before opening night.
If you've read this far...seek help.

Yep, agree with all the above. If the FO truly fancies this squad as a Cup contender, they have to make some moves, because the center and D positions (and the PK, but that’s another story) will be a death knell.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Further to Kennedy’s signing, I don’t think he has to clear waivers, so the Rags plan to have him on board as a depth option, and he can always be stashed in the A if the roster is too crowded.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
That simple statement is the problem not just with Green, but the whole lot.
The Caps were 5th in 5-on-5 defense (counting goals against). What hurt were those 13 GA 4-on-4 (I’m sure that’ll change—need more evidence than the Caps went from first last season to one of the worst this season?), the SHGA, and especially the PK.
by red army line on Aug 30, 2010 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions
That the Caps would be the worst team in the NHL in allowing 4-on-4 goals against and have only five teams score fewer goals at four a side is one of the oddest statistics to come out of last season, in my opinion. To me, that says the Caps lacked experience and its fellow traveler, confidence. Too much ice to defend, too many options with so much open ice on offense.

Three years remaining for a 25-year old who might be a 70-plus point player (certainly on this team) at a cap hit of less than $4 million? I’ll drive to New Jersey to pick him up.
But then again, that’s why he’s not going to be traded.

What would be the trade price out of our “well stocked farm?” Zajac’s their 1C. Would they want another C, like Aucoin or Perreault or (gulp) MarJo? Maybe a goalie – Holtby, perhaps?
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
No one really wants Aucoin or MP that much, if at all.
It would have to be a current NHL’er (cheap with upside), a prospect and a pick.
Chimera/Mackan + 2nd? Would be my guess.
or
Flash/Orlov + 2nd
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
Realistically I don’t think the Devs will deal Zajac and not to us if they were. But say if they were, I would be okay with either of those deals to fill our 2C hole.

Yeah. The Devils had one skill center before they traded for Arnott, and they’ll be letting him go I think to make cap room for Parise and Greene.

No way Flash or Chimera go back in a deal — too much salary; doesn’t achieve getting under the cap for NJ.

Zajac $3.9M
Flash $2.6M
Chimera $1.9M
Plenty of room.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
They’ve got to get rid of a net of at least about $3 million based on reports. 3.9 – 2.6 = 1.3. 3.9 – 1.9 = 2. Where are you getting the rest?
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Its a start. They could trade Bryce Salvador for a pick. There are some other things they’d have to do as well, but it definitely can be done.
Trading for Chimera, gets you Chimera and space for 2 more players.
Flash, gets you Flash and 1 more player.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
That is the immediate problem for Jersey, and if you consider that the Devils have more than $41M invested in only 12 roster spots for 2011-2012 (not including Kovalchuk), it’s a problem next season, too.
If you've read this far...seek help.
and to top things off, next season is when Parise is up for a new contract.

I think it’s a little overblown, personally. Parise I think will basically eat up the room that will get freed with Arnott.
by red army line on Aug 30, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t like this line of thinking. The “player X’s raise will be paid for by player Y leaving” argument completely ignores that you still need to replace Player Y so you are essentially paying 3 salaries for the 2 spots. Giving any player a raise is a big deal, especially when it’s as big a raise for as long a term as Parise is likely to get.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I don’t know, they are supposed to have Josefson and someone else on an ELC coming up if not this year then next, so there’s that. RFA raises could be a problem, though. The Rolston contract is looking worse by the day. I can’t believe I read experts praising it.
by red army line on Aug 30, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions
But those guys coming up are in a large degree independent. Just because you have Josefson and Tedenby doesn’t mean you don’t have a problem giving Parise a raise. You would have those guys anyway and paying Parise less is still better. Of course it helps to have ELC contribution, but the offsetting that fans talk about isn’t exactly precise.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Capitalize the statement and switch that ? to ! And you’ve got it right. Zajac is locked up cheap compared to his value and is a really legit C.
Jersey is a thin there as the Caps are, though. Very unlikely he goes anywhere via trade.

He’d be a great pick up for the Caps and would immediately step in as the 2C.
In any trade, the Devils would be looking for prospects and/or players on a prospect contract. They need to lower or eliminate salary to clear cap space for Kovy. I suspect they might take Flash and a minor leaguer for him, although I could see them looking to add someone like Steckel (who definitely fits in with their style of play…) Steckel and a middling prospect for Zajac would work for them if they need the room to make Kovy a Devil.
Of course, on the ice, getting only Steckel for Zajac is step down…

We heard a couple mutterings last week that Zajac could go. I have doubts. And I have even greater doubts that he might land on the Caps.
Lou Lam probably tries to unload Zubie and/or Ralston first. Zajac is too important to the team to ship out immediately.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
They can try all they want to get rid of Rolston, but I highly doubt it happens both because of his salary for the next two years, and his NTC. Salvador, Zajac, and Zubrus are the only ones that really take up enough on the salary cap to make a big difference, don’t have a NTC/NMC, and weren’t signed this off-season. Everyone else falls into one of the latter two categories (except Parise, who won’t be traded).

Definitely would have had Nieds on there. As much as a good owner can help, Nieds was indispensable for all 3 Cups. I’ll take the guy that made a difference on the ice. What does it say when your organization has 3 Cups and only 2 players on your Cupmore?
And yeah, Roy would definitely like a word if he had heard read that comment. He probably didn’t hear see it because he had his Cups Conn Smythes stuffed in his ears eyes.
I really wish that Roy and Brodeur had faced off one time for a Cup, both with stacked teams and a legitimate chance to show who was best. I think it would be even more instructional if, in this hypothetical, you gave Brodeur the better offensive team (say, Number 1 in the league), and then spotted Brodeur a 3-2 series lead going home. I really think that in a battle of two clutch games for the Cup, it would say a lot about who the best clutch goalie is. If only something like that had happened…
