The Simpsons isn’t just a “TV” show, though. It was literally 90s American culture. Yeah, it’s on Netflix. Definitely start on the first episode That’s how I’m getting through all he seasons. I’m on the final one.

It’s an incredible show. It’s basically about how the drug culture of Baltimore influences and is influenced by all segments of society, from politicians to dock workers to cops to drug dealers. Like others have mentioned, it’s not a procedural show. It’s basically a novel in television form.

On rumors that he might come to the US version of the Office:

There are still articles appearing about me taking over from Steve Carell on the American version of The Office. Maybe I haven’t made it clear enough. I suppose it doesn’t matter what I say for the world of entertainment news, so let’s try a new approach.

Report one of the following…

I am definitely taking over from Steve Carell on The Office. Yes, I have been asked to take over as the new boss at Dunder Mifflin. I said yes. They made me an offer I just couldn’t refuse. I will once again play David Brent and I take over next season. I can’t wait. Steve Merchant and I will also write and direct. I will remain Executive Producer.

or…

I’m not taking over from Steve Carell and will just continue to make millions for doing fuck all because I created the show and all the characters, and own the format and it’s being syndicated now and I get paid every time any episode of any version is played anywhere in the world, and I stopped my version at its height and I don’t think I can improve on that, and I don’t want to go back to that and get up at 6am every day of the week for 7 years.

Only one of these is true. I don’t know which one to believe. What would you do if you were me?

There are so many great stories surrounding that movie.

They basically “hid” the movie from Fox the entire time they filmed it. Finished it in like thirty days, and stayed on a backlot that they used while Fox was filming Patton at the same time. Sutherland and Gould were so convinced Altman was legitimately crazy, so they kept trying to go to their agents and get him fired.

You should get the CDs where younger bands redid the songs to raise money for charity. That one came out very well. Also, Blind Mellon covered Three is a Magic Number before their lead singer died of an overdose. It is a beautiful cover and makes me feel bittersweet about it considering what happened to him.

Wha? What do you need your tablet to do? They tried full-fledged tablet PCs in the past and nobody bought them. This device will also probably get the Android 3.0 (tablet-centric) upgrade in the future.

I want an open device that I can read books on in color that will also be a sweet DMP and internet browser. This is that.

Those issues are easily solved. You have touch keyboards already. Plus, if you have USB port on the tablet you can plug in a mouse.

Touch keyboards take up screen real estate which is going to make most laptop-type functions suck. Plugging in a mouse to solve the problem just gives you a crippled laptop.. I dunno. I kinda like the idea of a class of devices between phone and laptop that has a unique user experience, and these sorts of tablets are the best we have right now.

No, but Petsmart cultivates the image of animals first. and a reputation for treatment like that will hurt their image. Selling sick animals gains a store a bad reputation really fast (and might even be illegal, IIRC) so from a bottom line perspective denying medical care is a poor idea.

I haven’t investigated, although I know that there is a story there.

Here’s the thing — one of my pet peeves is the way that modern society sometimes views sleep as wasted time rather than a medical necessity. Edison was one of the first people (that people listened to) who espoused that notion. He invented the lightbulb in part to keep people working through the dark hours.

And that’s not even to mention the crappy way he treated Tesla (smarter, but non-American) and other competitors.

Larsen’s book assumes Marconi invented ‘radio’. He didn’t. Marconi at best improved on others ideas. Pisses me off to no end how he still gets credit for “inventing radio”.

I e-mailed the curator at the Newseum a when I saw their radio exhibit. She replied with a standard response about how they take pains with how they word things. I’m like if you did then you wouldn’t have written your exhibit the way you did. In a freakin museum dedicated to journalism no less.

Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.

by jordanDC on Aug 25, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

shitty tack off technique, and his body position in the air leaves a lot to be desired.

Landing was a bit off as well.

by jordanDC on Aug 25, 2010 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Hm. Tack off technique — I don’t know that that is but I’m guessing it has to do with the fact that he was already partly bent over when he jumped off. Body position in the air must mean his knees should have been bent tighter to his body. I love the fact that you can look at that and give it a knowledgeable critique.

by CapitalCentre on Aug 25, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, that should have been take off, not tack off. I don’t like his arms on the take off, either. they should be straight, extended above his head, not all bent and gross.

I will give him that blind landings, such as front saltos, are difficult because you can’t see the ground until you’ve landed. He really should have done a front salto with a half twist, they he could spot the ground and be better prepared for the landing :)

/end JR gymnastic lesson

and, yes, I’m laughing, because watching someone faceplant a gymnastics move like that, over and over and over again, is something gymnastics coaches do for fun “AH HAHAHAHAHAHA! Look at that idiot! OUCH!”

Did you watch last night’s? I got caught watching old Wipeouts and HIMYMs, so didn’t watch. Will catch it tonight.

by DrinkingPartner on Aug 25, 2010 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

It was pretty great. The surprise slapping wall on the first course is the best obstacle on the whole damn show.

Is that the one where they have to go through the numbered door, but there are hammers behind each one, anyway?

by DrinkingPartner on Aug 25, 2010 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

No, it’s just a walkway next to some water with a deceptively easy sweeper arm to get over.. so the people start running through and WHAM a section of the wall at face-height springs open and clotheslines them into the mud.

I’ve noticed that I enjoy the first course way more than the rest of the show. I don’t even need to finish the show. I can get through all of my old Wipeouts much faster this way.
