- Do the Caps need "shut-down" players? [Red Line Station]
- Cruisin' with Matt Bradley. [Caps365 (video)]

- The VC is already rockin' a little more red. [DCEx]
- How Albert Haynesworth has hurt... Caps fans? [OFB, (somewhat related: this from LiR]
- The Albany Devils will host the Bears on February 4... in Atlantic City. Sounds like a road trip waiting to be taken. [Patriot-News]

That OFB article is infuriating, as per usual
She’d become very much a sports generalist, covering numerous playing fields here. There’s virtue in that, I suppose, but it wasn’t the pretense upon which she’d moved here. Moreover, hockey here at such a critical time needed what Hillary brought back in 2007: serious credentials, and serious devotion. It was a distinctive vision by Comcast, and it needed to be supported. From my vantage, it wasn’t.
Meanwhile, Comcast Sportsnet in Philadelphia accords the Flyers a status on par with the Eagles and the Sixers and the Phillies, as sports media outlets in authentic sports towns tend to do. An under-utilized but industry-acknowledged talent in D.C. was, to some extent, going to waste, and Comcast execs in Philly pursued Hillary hard. Hillary was presented with precisely the challenge there she was here four years ago, only this time there would be no Lucy pulling the football on Charlie Brown. Flyers’ fans won’t tolerate shunned status for their beloved bullies. Beginning next month Hillary will be an authentic beat reporter in an authentic sports town.
So, you acknowledge her as an “under-used but industry-acknowledged talent” and say she was “going to waste” right after you point out how Comcast used her as a “sports generalist, covering many fields here”. Correct me if i’m wrong, but if she’s being used to cover a lot of different things, wouldn’t that make her the opposite of “under-used”?
And that’s without me pointing out the “Hillary will be an authentic beat reporter in an authentic sports town”. Did he start working for ThePensblog all of a sudden?

Ignoring the worship all over that article, it’s disappointing that CSN Washington is losing someone who actually knows the game. It’s infuriating to listen to many of their anchors butcher players’ names and sound totally lost when reading reports. I’m not her biggest fan — I think she makes plenty of errors — but I agree with OFB that coverage will suffer if there isn’t someone who’s first job is to cover the Caps, with fill in work secondary.

My most fond memory of Lisa Hillary covering the Caps...
Will always be the footage of her interviewing Chris Clark and Budreau after they beat the Panthers to clinch a playoff spot in 08. Not really because she has anything to do with it, but I just can’t watch the clip without getting a little choked up. I will always consider it to be the day that spawned the rapid increase in hockey fandom for so many in this area. What an awesome moment.

In 2006-2007, when the Flyers finished dead last in the league (11 points out of 29th place), they drew more than 19,000 a game and filled their arena to almost 99 percent capacity. In 2006, when they were completing their 13th consecutive year without a playoff appearance, the Phillies drew more than 34,000 fans per game.
I can’t imagine the same thing happening in DC. Philly is a sports town. DC, quite frankly, isn’t in the same league.

I blew a gasket when Lisa Hillary interviewed Ovechkin after a game in front of the VC crowd and asked a question with the words “sounding board” in it as the focal point of the question. “Sounding Board”? Really? You think Ovechkin knows what a sounding board is? 1/2 the arena would have trouble describing what a sounding board is. Of course it didn’t really matter because Ovechkins answers every question the same.

Seems to do a little of both. According to capgeek.com:
- They’re about $3.6M over the cap – dropping Bieksa for a bag of pucks would put them about $100K under (his contract is $3.75M). Not saying they will, just mentioning it to illustrate that there’s no way they can take another player back.
- They have 24 players signed – they’ll have to dump one.
- They have 9 defensemen on their roster – probably one or more gets traded or waived.
I take this move as an indicator that they have moved on from Mitchell.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Vancouver’s problem might be that they have guys who would be attractive as rentals — Bieksa, Ehrhoff — because they have high cap hits ($3.5M, $3.1M, respectively) and are UFAs after this season. Moving a pick/prospect for a player such as that now, with so much 60-game uncertainty leading to the trading deadline, makes that a higher risk move. Can’t imagine Vancouver getting much in return now for such a player, but they’re over a barrel, too.

So they don’t have to trade someone away right now. But at some point not too far into the season everyone gets healthy and they have a major cap problem. Wouldn’t it make sense that they could get more (or even just something) if they make the trade now, rather than find themselves in a situation where they have to attempt to move someone to the AHL and potentially lose him for nothing?
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Well, they’re way over the cap and have 24 guys signed on the roster according to CapGeek, including 9 Dmen. Trading Bieksa alone doesn’t give them room for callups even if they just trade picks and prospects. They can’t take salary or roster players back at this point, which leaves them over a barrel.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
They’ve got $3.5 – $5 million starting the season on LTIR (Salo, Burrows), that’s what I was referring to about getting healthy. Someone or multiple someones has to go, but it doesn’t have to be today. I think it’s in their interest to do it sooner rather than later, but that’s just me.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Ah ha. Good point. I’d agree it’s in their interest to do it now – if they wait until they have to do it they won’t get anywhere near what the players they trade are really worth.
Either way, signing Mitchell would only dig them a bigger hole, so I have to think that the original premise is correct and that this means that the Canucks are out of the race.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I agree with you, but strange things do happen.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
And here’s something from the Sporting News that might just make their problem go away:
It’s likely Salo won’t play this season — and at 36 on Sept. 2, might be finished in the NHL.http://www.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2010-08-25/canucks-injuries-dampen-kevin-bieksa-trade-possibility
Don’t know if that’s pure conjecture by the author, or he has something to base that on.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Awww, nuts. :P
Poor guy. Here’s wishing the best for him … but it only makes part of the problem go away. He’s at $3.5M, which means they’re about 100K over with 23 players signed and 8 D. So, it makes the problem better, but doesn’t eliminate it entirely.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
They also mention that Alexandre Burrows will probably start the season on LTIR, which gives them about 5.5 million worth of cap hit back, but Burrows will come back eventually. They’re still probably going to deal a defenseman, but I’d suspect it was one of Andrew Alberts or Shane O’Brien who was being shipped out, rather than Bieksa.
Shane O’Brien-ugh. Andrew Alberts – double ugh.

my two cents on willie — I think he clearly wants to stay on the WC but the Caps are still in the running because 1) they are a legit cup contender 2) either they offered him slightly more money or a longer deal which he wants the WC to match so his decision becomes a no-brainer

There are a lot of directions he could have gone. He could have done the hybrid Richter/Beezer mask and talked about that epic goalie controversy, where people still today think Beezer was better but Richter got them the ring.
As long as we’re on goalies, about hall of famers Gump Worsley Ed Giacomin or Dave Kerr (who won the 1940 cup). Hell, I wouldn’t have minded Lundqvist on there.
Gilbert is a good choice. Bryan Hextall is a hall of famer who played his whole career with the Rangers and scored the most goals in 1940.
Or you could have put Wade Redden up there. I’m serious — Redden as a symbol of the failed “try to buy a championship” strategy that has driven that organization into the ground over and over again. Right now, Redden (and Glen Sather) are the faces of the Rangers in my mind.

Someone on the Puck Daddy thread said the fourth should’ve been an Oilers jersey.
It’s hard for me to comment on guys who played in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, but I’m sure there are countless who are better suited for the honor. Redden, well… It’s always difficult for me to blame players in any sport for being overpaid. They and their agents may ask for a certain amount of money, but it’s the owners and GMs that are foolish enough to pay it.

Question
on the Staal situation. Since NY already said they’ll match whatever, why don’t the Caps force their hand and offer Staal a hefty above-market deal? It could be win-win by forcing the Rags to over pay when they dont have the cap space OR the Caps might actually sign him outright OR since he’s a RFA maybe the Caps could send back pieces involving flash. I would be okay with overpaying Staal knowing Poti comes off the books next year and 5 of our 6 d would be set for years to come (green, staal, schultz, carlson, alzner)… thoughts?

One, it’s generally considered poor form among the GM community. Off the top of my head, I can’t think of any other examples of GM putting an offer sheet on a guy.
Two, you have to have the draft picks in order to even make the offer. Assuming the Caps wanted to offer him something in the $5M range, they’d need to have a 1st, 2nd and 3rd rounder next year. They don’t have the 2nd rounder (thanks, Corvo).
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
to your second point – is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd rounder automatic or can the return be negotiated. I know GMGM isnt a fan of trading picks but perhaps a return of Flash, Erskine and a #1 would perk interest

Automatic, per the CBA. You have to have the draft picks, and they have to be your own draft picks, and not ones that are acquired via trade.

thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge (also making my idea bunk)…

The Caps would end up overpaying then (and giving up picks!), so I’d rather not, though the 2nd oldest Staal is possibly the best at what he does. NYR probably is waiting for an offer sheet that they’ll match, hence clearing this thing up, or Staal will decide to sign short term for cheap because he just wants to play (similar thing went down last year with Dubinsky).
SJS offer sheeted Hjammer in CHI, and of course we have Lowe.

We don’t have our second-round draft pick next year, so we have to sign Staal in the first- and third-round range. That would be somewhere around 4M, which isn’t an overpayment for his skills, but it’s a pretty hefty cap hit going forward.
Isn’t Staal wanting $5M, and the Rangers want to keep him at or under $4M? I think I’m remembering that correctly.
At any rate, if that’s true, that tier of offer sheet would play right into the Rangers’ hands. They’d match that in a heartbeat and thank the Caps for helping out (if, indeed, Staal would sign such an offer sheet).
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Sather did say it is a chasm, and if I’m Sather I’m trying for $3.5 million or less.

Anybody else here worried if the ‘Ning’ get any type of decent goaltending they could challenge the Caps for the division? Not that I would be upset if we lost the division since we dont know what to do with it come playoff time, But it would be good to get some competion going again in the SE!
Challenge for a playoff spot, yes. The division, no. I stated a couple of weeks ago I expect the Bolts to finish in 7th or 8th in the East. Goaltending, defense, and Vinny are too big question mark wise to have them overtaking the Caps.

CB will tell you Ellis is a perfect 1A starter. For clear cut #1 he might have consistency issues, but it’s really not much different than with Halak, save Halak is a couple of years younger.
It’ll take more than that. On paper the Lightning are kind of close, but the Caps play “offense is the best defense” better than most other teams, including TBL.

Even if the Caps fall back to Earth a bit (as I expect them to), they’re still ~110 point team. That’s enough to put you top 5 (and usually top 3) in the league. The Caps are still elite, they quite possibly could repeat as the best regular season team again, although probably not crack 121 points. I don’t think the Bolts, or anyone else in the SE, is quite to that elite level yet. But, hey, stranger things have happened and that’s why the play the game.

Since Knuble’s mug is on this mornings page, I hope the Caps sign him for at least another year, IMO I think Eric Fehr will be on the top line but I would like to see Knuble extended.

I wouldn’t mind the Caps giving Knuble 1 year contracts until he’s ready to retire. I do think this is probably his last year as a top line player if he lasts the entire year there (which I think I can). I’m not sure if Fehr has top line in his future, I definitely think he has number two. But then again Knuble’s game isn’t really based on speed and finesse and he works on the top line quite well, so there’s certainly a chance Fehr can find his niche there if he develops his net game.

So lets say Knuble is signed for 1 more year but plays on any line but not the first line, Who makes that jump or do the Caps go FA for another winger?
My guess would be Fehr, although Semin could and (possibly) Laich. I wouldn’t want to see Laich up there, but it’s possible.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I’d say it would be Fehr out of necessity and not necessarily ability. I don’t think Semin is still on the Caps after this year, and even if he were I wouldn’t want him on the top line. Having Semin on the team pretty much means no real second line center (barring MP/Mackan filling that role), so the second line would still run through him. Putting him on the top line would make the Caps a one line team.

I’d add I think the Caps were hoping Laich could take that top line spot. After last season I’m not so sure about that happening. I’d sign Knuble as an insurance policy. You can put him on any line and he’ll be successful.

I don’t see guys like Andrew Gordon or Jay Beagle being able to fill that role. Those are 4th line type guys. I could see Fehr on the top line. However, most likely I see him being a winger on the 2nd line.

Sorry if that came off as a bit harsh, but I get annoyed by the Laich love sometimes. He’s a great quote, and I’m sure he’s great in the locker room. But he’s not nearly as good as some people seem to think (also not nearly as consistent with the bakery as he should be, especially given his quotes). He’s a good role player that can play 2/3 line duties. And every team needs that kind of player, but I think the Caps are going to end up overpaying for him.

At this point I don’t think it’s anymore unreasonable than making the assumption that Fehr can play on the first line….atleast a first line with Ovechkin and Backstrom.
If a player is going to be playing on the top line they better damned well be able to produce at ES. All metrics that I’ve seen have shown Fehr to be efficient with his limited TOI at ES whereas Laich is mediocre (at best) on ES and makes his living on the PP, inflating his numbers and causing him to be overvalued. There are many reasons and numbers I’ve seen that make me think it’s more likely Fehr can play that spot than Laich. (I will defer to KhtaD for the numbers and actual rankings).

I’ll grant you the point in realtion to ES points….there’s no question that Fehr is more suited than Laich in that sense. But, IMO, Fehr hasn’t shown that he has the skating ability to belong up there.
Knuble isn’t exactly a speed demon. You don’t need to be as fast as Rico Fata when you’re wheel house is really just a 10 foot radius around the net. (Right, F&B?)

Fehr seems to be nearly as good a skater as Knuble. One of the main differences is that Knuble battles for the puck in the corners more.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Knuble’s diminishing foot speed is made up for by his positioning and his willingness to battle along the boards and in front of the net. Fehr just hasn’t shown he’s willing to do those things on a regular basis yet. Certainly, there have been glimpses of what’s to come but right now I just don’t see him as any more/less of a replacement for Knuble than Laich is.
I’m curious as to what Fehr looks like after finally being healthy for a full season and not having to recover from surgery in the off season. I don’t think he’s going to magically start battling along the boards, but as good as he looked last season, he might look even better this time.

I agree completely…and throughout the season we all saw glimpses of the player Fehr can be. I just don’t think that right now he has any more (or less) of a chance to replace Knuble. Will that change as the season progresses? I hope so.
I think it would help Fehr to bulk up a little. 6’4", only 212… seems a little light to be battling in front of the net. Knuble has 11 pounds on him, even though he’s an inch shorter.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I have to say, seeing him in street clothes my first reaction was “How do you not snap in half?!”

Laich hasn’t shown the willingness to battle that Knuble does either. I think it’s more likely that Fehr takes that step this year than Laich does. Part of the reason is Fehr finally has a healthy summer to train. Another part is what I’ve already mentioned; Laich’s “do as I say, not as I do” issues with his playing style.

I know that was the hope, and I was hoping (though not optimistic) that he would step up. Two years ago he had his bakery quotes and comments about crashing the net. It’s certainly well and good to say the right things. But even when he was saying those things he would still have stretches of games where he seemed to think he had Semin’s skill and was trying to be a fancy Dan as opposed to making the tough places tough to go to. That’s what has always made me skeptical. He certainly was better about it last year, but the inconsistency was still there to my eyes.

So down the road, I think the Caps need to look at getting some wingers that are first or 2nd line quality, I agree with Timmyv38 in that Hershey has alot of guys that can come up for 3rd line positions. I think they need to look at getting some d-guys as well.
I think the Bears do have some guys who could be 2nd line wingers in the future, just not yet. There are recent Caps prospects though, like Galiev and Kuznetsov. When it comes to dmen, the Caps also have a few prospects, Orlov seeming to be the most likely.

The visa issues probably lie with the Caps’ front office, though it’s hard to know. There may have been a mixup because his visa was for Canada (where he was palying fro the Remparts in Quebec), or it may be he got caught up in the Russian spy abrouhaha, which happened at about the same time.

Oh, I agree. My point, apropos of the Clips, was more that there’s a pretty real possibility that Osala shows up on the left or right wing in Carolina for a number of games this year, especially if the players ahead of him in that position are Erik Cole, Chad LaRose, Sergei Samsonov, and Jiri Tlusty. LaRose has missed a ton of games over the past three seasons, Cole is also injury prone, and Tlusty’s still an unproven rookie.
I hope those Stingrays are ready!
Generally speaking, the Rays are not a feeder team for the Bears. Obviously there are exceptions, but I think the ECHL is mostly like a last chance for Caps prospects that haven’t panned out.

True. It seemed like as soon as Varly and Neuvy got pulled up, Holtby went to Hershey. It seems like the Caps put young players there who would be a surplus in Hershey.

There are a lot of prospects who start out in the ECHL just because they’re not quite ready to play at the AHL level, or they’re pushed down there by depth chart issues. Off the top of my head, players who have gone this route include Patrick McNeil, Andrew Gordon, Steve Pinizzotto, and Trevor Bruess.
Sometimes it’s just depth chart + where will the player get more playing time (1st line AHL vs 4th line NHL, for example)
by red army line on Aug 25, 2010 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Again…there are always exceptions. But generally speaking, it is just not a feeder team. More players get sent down than called up.
Hershey actively uses South Carolina for call-ups both of Washington contract players and Hershey contract players, as well as ECHL players not under AHL contract. Depending on the situation and type of player, Yingst also looks to other ECHL players when making call-ups (see Rome, for an example last season.)

So I’d heard most of the signings, but forgot the two prospects being moved up. Stevenson, Kashirsky, and Rechlicz were the ones I hadn’t heard about. Thanks for the list!
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Some of these players will play most, if not all, of the season with South Carolina, but for the purposes of competing for roster spots heading into camp, they should be listed for now for discussion purposes.
Without going back and looking at the details, 99% sure DeMichiel signed an AHL/ECHL contract.
You want research and facts :)
2010-2011 Hershey Bears: Players Likely Available to Hershey as of Today
D (11):
Returning Players: Collins, Finley, Godfrey, Kroll, P. McNeill, Miskovic, Wellar, Yeo
New Signings: Fahey, Nycholat, Stevenson
Not in organization or Expected to be with Caps: Alzner, Carlson, Amadio, Helmer (plus Lewis)
F (18):
Returning Players: Aucoin, Beagle, Bouchard, Bruess, A Gordon, Hauswirth (no AHL games last season), Joudrey, Kane, G. McNeill, Perreault, Pinizzotto, Rome
New Signings: Greentree, Kashirsky, Kugryshev, Rechlicz, Willsie, plus Gustafsson (not really a new signing but not really a returning player either)
Not in organization or Expected to be with Caps: Bourque, Giroux, Wilson (some others like Eakin, Ferguson…are in a different category, IMO)
G (4):
Returning Players: Holtby
New Signings: Sabourin plus depth with Ford and DeMichiel
Not in organization or Expected to be with Caps: Bacashihua and Neuvirth
AHL vets – AHL vet rule (5): Aucoin, Fahey, Kane, Nycholat, Willsie (plus RFA AHL vet playing in KHL: Bourque)
- Not in organization or Expected to be with Caps. I am not listing every player that wore a Hershey jersey last season. I did list players who played in the playoffs and/or finished the season with Hershey spending a decent amount of time on the roster. Also, a non-contract player who played with Hershey and now is under contract with Hershey counts as a returning player for these purposes (see Rome and Kroll for examples.)
Of note, while most fans have certain players penciled in for the Caps NHL roster, it’s possible they could see playing time with Hershey depending on performance, injuries, trades, etc., especially those still waiver exempt.
At this point, it’s possible one of AGordon, Beagle, or Perreault or Pinizzotto (if he could make the transition to 2 refs and continue to improve his decision making) could start the season in the NHL. It’s possible none of them and possible more than 1 depending on other moves by the Caps as it’s only August, plus how Johansson does in camp and whether he stays or goes back to Sweden.
This list does not include 2 goalies, 7 dmen and 12 forwards under Washington contract projected at this time to be in the NHL, or Johansson projected for NHL or Sweden unless something changes (he is eligible to play in the AHL if all the parties agree on that move.) Obviously, trades and demotions are possible even among the players currently projected to be on the NHL roster both before and during camp, as well as during the season.
Some players from this list will be assigned to SC during or after camp.
(hopefully I didn’t forget to list someone)

Without any research or facts, I predict Johansson plays 30+ games with Hershey this year. I bet the Caps tell him that if he does well there, he’ll probably make the NHL team at some point and he decides to play in PA.

Hard to predict as there is no way to know from indications to date whether he’d really consider reporting to Hershey over going back to Sweden.
As has been discussed before, there is the issue related to the timing of the Swedish season (and signings) relative to the NHL training camp/preseason, but I imagine with performance and injury issues, he’d find a spot in Sweden if that’s what happens. It’s also possible he/his agent already has something in place if he doesn’t make the NHL roster. Wait and see.
Wait and see.
But I’m an internet commenter. I’d rather give my baseless opinion! :)
You’re absolutely right. Nobody knows now what will happen. A lot depends on his training camp performance.

Hershey should field a competitive team this season even with the turnover, especially with the 2 goalies expected to be in net and the prospects, plus Aucoin and some others up front and the veteran D they brought in this summer. Depending on other signings, players like Bouchard will have an opportunity for more PP time and as has been noted, one would expect Patrick McNeill to see tougher and more minutes on a consistent basis, etc.
Just for fun….something I pulled together earlier this summer, don’t recall if I posted in a thread here or not, 2005-06 Calder Cup winning team to 2006-07 team that lost in the finals…of guys that played at least 5 games in the playoffs in 05-06…for ’06-07 season
Brooks Laich and Boyd Gordon graduated to the NHL
(and Beech and Nycholat (partial and then traded) for the ’06-07 season)
Wotton signed with Isles/Bridgeport
Kane went back to the Philly org.
Mink went to SJS/Worcester
Aulin moved on
Forbes, Wilde, Fortin, and Cutta went to play in Europe
On both playoff teams: Klepis, plus Cassivi, Fleischmann, Green, Schultz, Steckel, Arsene, Robitaille, Tenute, Sloan and Bourque (the last 2 didn’t play much in 06), Engelland (didn’t play much in 06 and left after 07 to sign NHL contract with Pens)
Schedules
So the AHL schedule should be released around 4pm today!
and I just read that the NHL national tv schedule should be released sometime today.

Nice. Looking at the Caps’ Sunday schedule, anyone care to bet on which games get shown on NBC? I only looked after January 1, because the NHL on NBC doesn’t start until after the end of football season.
1/16: OTT – not a chance
2/6 (Super Bowl Sunday): PIT – no-brainer
2/20: @BUF – doubt it
3/6: @FLA – not a chance
3/13: CHI – they just might, depends on what their other options are
We might get away with just one NBC game. Suits me, getting to the VC before noon is a pain.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Chicago would seem to be pretty likely – there wouldn’t be very many bigger matchups. But the less Sunday NBC games the better. I don’t think anyone likes that early start time.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
It depends on what else is going on that Sunday, but true that CHI would be a big draw, and certainly the CHI/WAS matchup last year didn’t disappoint from a hockey perspective.
I don’t see NBC passing up a WAS/PIT matchup on Super Bowl Sunday, though. There’s a tinfoil-hatted part of me that wonders if NBC asked the NHL for that matchup.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
No need for tinfoil hat. Leagues do their schedules in conjunction with their TV partners.

Those two would seem to be the most likely out of the five. I didn’t mention the PIT/WAS game because I totally agree with you that it’s a no-brainer. And how much screaming do you think there will be from fans of other teams about that? Not that I blame them.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Can’t blame them, but my counter to that is “look at it from our perspective, we have to drag ourselves downtown by noon on Super Bowl Sunday. You think it’s fun for us?”
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Yeah, that is going to suck just a little. Not that many of us who have a chance will miss it.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
That counter is weak with me, much less with the league or a TV network.

No chance the Redskins are going to win the Super Bowl anytime soon. Baltimore winning the Super Bowl has no relevance on DC.

Mitchell Contract Buy or Sell?
And as the LA Times’ Helene Elliott reports, the Kings were the only team to offer Mitchell more than a one-year deal, which makes this move by GM Dean Lombardi a risky one — especially at $3.5 million a season — but one that could provide a high reward should he prove healthy over the term. (Emphasis mine)
It seems to me that Mitchell pretty much has to stay healthy and perform up to his 08-09 peak for this contract to really be worth it. He’s getting Poti money, and Poti’s not exactly a bargain. They’re both injury prone, while Mitchell is better defensively and Poti is better offensively.
Anyhow, Buy or Sell on Mitchell’s contract being a high-reward move if he stays healthy?
Personally, I sell. . .
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I think you nailed it. I think this contract is just as inflated as the ones given out on July 1, if not moreso due to the concussion risk. The term is shorter, but the age justifies that. If Mitchell stays healthy and there is no dropoff, he’s worth that in today’s market, but those are big "if"s.
Sorry, I contradicted myself a little there. I view today’s market as inflated, hence this one being inflated but Mitchell “probably being worth it” if he stays healthy and there’s no decline.
I think we’re in agreement, then. Basically, if he performs to the best of his abilities and plays almost all 82 games each season, then the contract is just about worth it. I put the probability of that at somewhere between 10 and 20% though. Basically, I think this deal has an 80-90% chance of not being worth it, and about a 10% chance of being worth it, and a Zero% chance of being a “high-reward” move, particularly given LA’s defensive depth.
This one is a headscratcher.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Poti’s 3.5 per year.
I don’t think it’s that unlikely that Mitchell gives them more the next 2 years than Poti gave the Caps the last 2. I don’t think it’s quite 50%, but I think it’s better than 20%.

I’m pretty sure that the Caps are a better off spending 3.5 mil on Willie MItchell than the Kings are and that the Kings would have been better off signing Kovalchuk than the Caps would have been. Different areas of weakness, different marginal rates of return.
The Mitchell deal is obviously less damaging to the Kings than Kovalchuk would have been to the Caps, but it’s still adding at a position of strength and leaving a position of weakness unattended. Their lineup isn’t going to benefit that much from adding another defense in Mitchell’s mold.
Selling for sure.

I’m going with buy.
Yes its a risky contract, but its also risky going into the season with Sloan/Erksine as a 6D.
I’m hoping the Caps find another card to play this offseason as$ 3.5 per might seem a bargain compared to what they give up at the trade deadline to shore up the D.
I’ll channel Peerless’ thoughts from earlier and counter that it’s not risky to begin the season with Erskine in the lineup. If Erskine’s still in the lineup come April…now, that’s risky.
by mechanicsville on Aug 25, 2010 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions
I think I’m agreeing with that.
The caps have had this same defensive need the past two trade deadlines and weren’t able to solve it in april.
For people saying $3.5 is too high, what price might the caps have to pay at the deadline? i’d prefer to gamble with potential cash overpayment now than risk trade deadline bidding wars involving prized prospects.
