Number of retired multi-season goal-scoring champs not in the Hall of Fame: two. Name 'em
Pavel Bure and Peter Bondra.
But here is the other side of that coin. Of the 17 players on that list who are both retired and in the Hall of Fame, only two — Joe Malone and Doug Bentley — never won a Stanley Cup. And Malone’s comes with an asterisk. His Montreal Canadiens were in the 1919 Stanley Cup final against the Seattle Metropolitans. After five games, the series was tied 2-2-1 (Game 4 ending in a 0-0 tie). The deciding Game 6 was called off, as was the series, as a result of the flu epidemic of 1919 that left several Canadiens unable to play. Seattle would not accept a forfeit path to the Cup, so the Cup was not awarded that year. Had the game been played, and Montreal won, Malone would have had his Cup.
Bentley did play in one final, but his Blackhawks lost the 1944 Cup to Montreal in four games.

Imagine that, Edmonton. A trade takes two to tango. Wasn’t he put on waivers earlier this year? If the Caps didn’t bite then, why would they now?
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
A crazy thought: what if the Caps would be willing to bury Souray and his salary in the minors. That’s a big nut for Uncle Ted to swallow (and paying Nylander’s salary) but it’s the only scenario that seems even fathomable. I don’t think getting a guy like Cogliano would be worth that but if it were Gagne? And if Souray would have to pass through re-entry waivers after the trade for some reason (which I have no idea), that would be a huge risk. Again, a crazy thought but the only one to me that is even a remote possibility.
It’d be like that rumored trade, I think it was Huet + Hawks 2nd to TOR for a 5th, involving a dowry. I’d take Gagner, but again, depends on what Leonsis is willing to do. 10 million spent not towards the team is a lot.
by red army line on Aug 24, 2010 9:17 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s the only way that acquiring Souray would make any sense, but then the speculated return doesn’t make any sense.
It was supposed to be Flash for Souray + Cogliano. But if the Caps are doing EDM the favor of taking Souray off their hands, just to stick him in the minors, they’d have to get a better return than Cogliano.
I’m with Gouldie – there was never anything to this to start with.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
This and the follow up are instructive on how these trade rumors get started these days and how much credibility to give them. There never were any Souray to Washington talks.

This was actually one of the fan contests of the Tacoma Rockets of the WHL. (The first hockey club I ever followed.) For one season, at each home game they selected one fan from the crowd and 3 friends to watch the rest of the game from a hot tub in one of the upper corners of the Tacoma Dome.
I remember the Rockets before they moved to Kelowna. I used to go to Sabrecats games all the time when I was at Ft. Lewis.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
The Sabrecats’ first year was the year I moved out here for college, so I never really followed them.
My godparents were billets for the Rockets, and by doing so unknowingly made me a lifelong hockey fan because those guys were so kind to a middle-school girl with very little friends to speak of. They taught me the game. They even made me specifically a Caps fan eventually… it’s a long story, but I moved back to DC from Tacoma in 2000, and then in 2002 my godparents sent me an email that one of the players that used to live with them, Joel Kwiatkowski, was now playing for the Caps….
I’ve been following them ever since.
Ft. Lewis, eh? My dad was stationed there, as well as tons of friends. Small world, for sure!
Out of curiosity, what unit was your dad with? We might have overlapped.
Billeting is such a cool system. Many of the Portland Winterhawks used to billet in a town I lived in as a kid, but we never hosted any.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Was Dennis Maruk in his prime actually better than Adam Oates in the same, even though Oates’ Caps’ prime was a bit older (iirc) than Maruk’s? This is an honest question regarding the Caps outsider post, because while Nicky’s prime is still to come (so we can’t really know), I would never have placed Oates and Maruk on the same level. I also never saw Maruk play, so, I’m certainly a little biased for Oates.
by DrinkingPartner on Aug 24, 2010 8:57 AM EDT reply actions
Maruk was a better finisher, but Oates was an unbelievable passer. Neither were very big and both didn’t play much defense, however.
Oates’ years with the Caps was in his decline phase and in a time when scoring in the NHL was way down, so you definitely didn’t see him at his best. Those years with St. Louis and Boston were incredible.
Maruk just didn’t have the same career mostly because he couldn’t stay healthy after he turned 30.
Oates wasn’t that bad defensively and he was one of the best faceoff artists in my memory.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
He was great at faceoffs.
I think Oates played one way in the regular season and another way in the playoffs, when he was much more defensive minded.
Maruk had great speed and had a wicked wrist shot.

Corey on the Leafs
I think he’s got them a bit too high. They’ll improve in net, and their defense will likely be better, but they’re really, really going to struggle to score with essentially no decent/experienced centers. I can’t see them leapfrogging over the Habs, for example.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I would agree except that the teams he has ranked below the leafs do project to be worse in 2010-11. I see a big fall in Montreal, and boy does Florida look horrid. The Leafs did get a little better during last season and in the off-season, but their move up in the standings will be part their improvement, and part of it the other teams falling down the elevator shaft.

In a nutshell, here are the reasons Willie Mitchell could pick the Caps:
-they’re a solid Cup contender
-he’d be playing top four minutes
-he’d be playing in crucial situations; last minutes of the game, penalty killing, against opposition’s top forwards, etc.
-Ovechkin, Backstrom, Green, Knuble, etc.
-he’d travel about 20,000 fewer miles than if he played in the West
-his family would get a chance to see a part of the country they’ve never lived in
And here are the reasons why he probably won’t pick the Caps:
-They’re not in the west and he’s been a western conference guy virtually his entire career
-He doesn’t want to move his family too far from his BC home
-The Kings have reportedly offered a multi-year deal and McPhee may not want to do that
-Vancouver may still want him and that would be his first choice
-money
I guess we’ll find out where he’s going today, but I’m not getting my hopes up that it’ll be DC.
Why not? That Flash trade went down pretty quickly after it was leaked.
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.

If his choices are between San Jose and DC, though, it becomes a little closer. I’d be hard-pressed to say that the Bay area is that much nicer than the DC area, and the travel for an Eastern conference team is a lot better.
We’ll just wait and see, though.

A lot of the things that people hold up as being issues with the DC area are also issues with the Bay Area – high cost of living, a small number of good public schools, etc. – are things that are irrelevant to a pro athlete. DC and the Bay Area both have bad traffic, but both also have abundant natural beauty within a relatively short distance, as well as good shopping, world-class restaurants, and great entertainment options. D.C. has slightly better private schools, which might be a consideration for someone of Willie Mitchell’s age.
The big edges I see the Bay Area as having are 1) there’s better skiing nearby, and 2) the weather is better. The big edge I see DC as having is that you don’t have to be in San Jose every day, though maybe it’s improved since I was there eight years ago.
But if you live smack dab in the middle of both SJ and SF, you’re only 45 mins from either. Our closest big, big city is Philly, and I don’t see that as much of a draw.

The only thing about the weather in the Bay Area is that it doesn’t snow during the winter – it rains. Also, the fogs off the Bay can be messy and dangerous. Granted, it doesn’t generally snow much in the DC area either – and then you get last year. I remember the Canadian Caps mentioning that the snow reminded them of home.

Having spent a good deal of time in both areas, I’d have to rule in favor of Bay Area weather, hands down. I don’t think anyone on the planet enjoys humidity. Sure, San Francisco is foggy a lot, but the Bay Area is colossal, and is rife with exclusive bedroom communities that have consistently amazing weather (Portola Valley, Atherton, Palo Alto, Burlingame, etc.). Not to mention Marin County across the Golden Gate Bridge, arguably one of the most exclusive and picturesque counties in the entire country, and an incredible place to raise a family. I know DC has a number of such communities as well, including all of Montgomery County, but the weather’s still unpleasant aside from during the transition seasons. Sorry to contribute to the OTness!

Salo to LTIR, Bieksa out via trade, Rome to AHL gets them to $5.34M under the cap.
2.0 for Mitchell plus (say) $.2.6M in the F coming back for Bieksa leaves them with about $740K in cap space and 7 D/13 F/2 G.

Pretty bad "summer skate" if you ask me, but here it is in parts
Last season was a disappointment for Capitals fans as the team bowed out to the Montreal Canadiens in a seven-game series after holding a supposedly insurmountable 3-1 series lead. With last season behind them, the Capitals are looking to flat-out dominate the opposition on the scoreboard once again. The question, however, will be whether the team can prevent goals — particularly in the playoffs. This year will be an important one for Alex Ovechkin & Co., but they’re fortunate to have the added help of a young blueliner on the rise.
I’m fairly certain the issue wasn’t so much that the Caps let in too many goals as they couldn’t score to save their lives. Probably don’t need to re-hash this in detail, but yet another disappointing example of ESPN not really paying close enough attention to hockey.

Trending up: John Carlson
Last season: 2.0 GVT / VUKOTA Projection 3.1 GVT
Carlson made a name for himself in the 2010 world junior hockey championship by scoring the overtime winner in Saskatchewan to capture the tournament gold medal for the U.S. The American rear guard is a terrific skater with strong hockey sense and puck skills. Carlson did not play much in the NHL last season but did make a significant contribution for the Capitals in the playoffs. With as much talent as he has, and with some questions on the Capitals’ blue line, do not be surprised if Carlson exceeds VUKOTA’s expectations for him in 2010-11 — he has the talent to do so.
Trending down: Mike Knuble
Last season: 12.7 GVT / VUKOTA Projection: 6.6 GVT
Knuble certainly exceeded VUKOTA projections last season, posting 29 goals and 53 points and very efficient scoring numbers at even strength. The veteran winger is 38 years old, and although playing in a Washington system that emphasizes offense should help his totals, VUKOTA still projects the winger to finish with 19 goals and 42 points in 2010-11. If Knuble continues to work hard along the boards and goes to the net as he usually does, the Capitals probably will be satisfied with those totals. — Pollock
If Knuble can match last year’s production, it would be huge. You don’t expect guys of his age/playing style to keep up that goal and point total when in his late-30s.
The problem with Knuble may be that if his game starts to slip a little and they choose to drop him down to the 2nd or 3rd line, it’ll fall further even faster.
E.J.’s name to know: G Michal Neuvirth
At this point, by his words and his actions (to date), Capitals GM George McPhee is prepared to enter the season with a pair of 22-year-old kid goalies. The club opted against re-signing veteran Jose Theodore, and the Caps haven’t made a move to add another experienced stopper (yet).
Semyon Varlamov, with just 51 regular-season/playoff games of NHL experience, enters training camp as the club’s clear-cut No. 1. That means that, after backstopping Hershey (AHL) to back-to-back Calder Cup titles, Neuvirth won’t get a full-time opportunity in D.C., but he’ll have a shot if Varlamov slips up. Neuvirth has played 22 NHL games over the past two seasons (including 17 last season), posting 11 victories and a very respectable .910 save percentage.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound goalie came to North America as a teenager to play in the OHL and was the Caps’ second-round pick (34th overall) in 2006. And, although you might not realize it, Neuvirth is actually a month older than Varlamov.
The Caps clearly like their young Czech-born goaltender. Early last season, Caps coach Bruce Boudreau told me he saw big things in Neuvirth’s future. It seems as if that future will begin this fall. — Hradek

Aren’t they just presuming Varly the clear cut #1? Other than him changing his jersey number, I don’t recall either BB or GMGM stating that he’s the definite #1 goalie.

And he got here six weeks early to do the Caps’ conditioning program. That surely raised his stock a bit with TPTB.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Also didn’t the Caps ask him to come early specifically to condition himself better, which I interpret as them saying to Varly that he has to prove that he can stay healthy as well as just playing well.
My impression is that the Caps have been a little higher on Varly (IF he can stay healthy)—that he might of the two have the higher upside because of his athletic, improvisational goalie style.
But I also get the sense that they Neuvy is their ace in a hole if Varly doesn’t pan out.
It’s another 1A, 1B season, but rookie style.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Neuvy will be back in town September 10, BTW. He’s been training outside of Prague, and doing a few “all-star” type Czech/Slovak-type tournaments. So he’s been playing with/against Plekanec and Kaberle and Chara, etc.

My guesses on the trivia question (without reading either comments or the article, in the interests of fairness):
1. Bondra (pretty sure he won twice);
2. Does Jagr count as retired?

Did Jagr win the goal-scoring trophy?

Did anyone see this? I found it via Kukla’s, but it reads like an April Fools’ joke.
Now, I’m thinking this has to be fake, as I can’t really find any independent confirmation of Shelley ever playing instruments on stage or providing backup vocals for Mumford & Sons. Oh, and there are no sources cited in the article whatsoever. Also, the detail about Shelley living next door to Roland Orzabal is too much, and “Bez” wasn’t in Joy Division. But whatever. I would love for it to be true.
Mirtle reports Huet’s loan to Swiss team has been agreed upon by all sides, and now they just have to wait until 12 days before the season starts to finalize the deal.
Other interesting nuggets:
Deal will leave Blackhawks with $1.5M in cap room and 21 players signed.
CBA does not allow players to renegotiate contracts (you all probably knew that but I did not).
Under transfer agreement, the default assumption is that the loaning club pays all the salary, but the loanee club can agree to pay any or all of it.
Bill Daly confirms that loan to Europe is functional equivalent of reassignment to AHL (which we knew, but apparently plenty of mouth breathers out there did not) and is not circumvention (ditto).
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Mirtle further notes via Twitter that the ’Hawks will need to keep at least $750K in reserve cap space to account for injuries and callups.
By implication, the ’Hawks would need to fill their 13th F spot with an ELC guy making between the minimum and $750K. They have several candidates that fit that criterion. Igor Makarov or Mathis Olimb anyone?

On May 18, 2010 it was announced that Worrell agreed to become the head coach for the Florida Atlantic University hockey club team. He is also coaching North Broward Preparatory School Varsity Ice Hockey Team, located in Coconut Creek, Florida.[
This is also hilarious
On December 6, 2004 Worrell was pulled over while driving a Ford Expedition owned by former teammate Andreas Lilja, in Pompano Beach, Florida.14 He was pulled over for driving with an expired license plate tag. Worrell, a 6’ 7" Caribbean-Canadian, identified himself as Lilja, a 6’ 3" Swedish Caucasian. According to the arresting officer, Deputy Lionel Davis, “After asking the defendant several times his name, Worrell continued to deliberately falsify and obstruct my investigation,” Davis cleared up the misidentification after finding Worrell’s passport in the SUV

I agree with you, Peerless. Here’s my reasoning. The fact that he’s still thinking means that the Caps didn’t blow him away with an offer he can’t refuse. All things thus being more or less equal, he’ll stay out West.
Wouldda been nice, but that’s the way it goes.

I want Mitchell here and will be disappointed if he does not come here, To me he would be a big piece on the blueline, But it would also show that GMGM believes that his team needs to get tougher, I like DJ King and glad he’s here but to me thats not enough. Yes my hopes are high and yes they would be crushed if he does not come.
Fight hard for him GMGM!!!!!!! Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
You have to understand – the Caps are the only EC team in the running. All the other teams are out west where he’s been his whole career. It’s no easy thing for him to pack up and move across a continent, and the distance he has to move his family will factor into his decision. He’s got to do what is best for him, too?
I agree that I want him here, but I also understand that the Caps are probably a long shot to land him. Don’t get your hopes too high, and if they got high, you’d better temper them. Also, being “crushed” is probably being a little melodramatic.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Plenty of players have moved from East to West and vice versa, Pro players adjust just fine, I understand he needs to do what is best for him and I’m sure he will. I would hate to lose out on him b/c he takes a deal that is 500,000 more than what the Caps offered.
We havent had a guy on the blueline here since Tinordi (Who I think the Caps should have drafted his son, But thats another story) GMGM has not done well in getting defensemen here in the past and if this one slips away, its not a good sign on him.
If Mitchell doesnt come here, I hope there is a back up plan.!

Understand that, but maybe a deal here or there could have got the Caps to pick him. Tinordi wasnt on thier radar and thats fine, But the crop of D-Guys in the minors isnt looking so great now that JC and KA are with the big club.
We got our guy. Kuznetsov. GMGM even tried to trade up in the first round for him, and no one was selling.
Tinordi, for all his six feet sixness, is only 18 and isn’t what the caps need this coming season.

There are only 6 real defensive spots for people with talent – #7 is press-box fodder.
Green, Schultz, Alzner and Carlson have four of those spots locked down for anywhere between 2 and 4 years. The relative lack of player behind them isn’t much of an issue. Guys like Patrick McNeill or Patrick Wey can fill in those last two spots if need be.

What the hell are you talking about?
We have a conversation going in which I believe the Caps blue line prospects are very very slim pickings, RB feels that McNeil and Wey will be fine as 5/6 d-guys on the Caps.
I dont buy it, Not all minor league guys are successful in the NHL. So I was told I was dismissing both McNeil and Wey to early and I brought up Reggie Savage who was a best in the minors and then came up here to DC/Landover and couldnt hit the broad side of a barn.
McNeill, Wey, Orlov, any guy we sign for under $1m.
The back two spots of a defensive corps aren’t anything to get your panties in a wad about unless the team starts spending two million on useless players who ought to be in the AHL. . .
. . . Damnit.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
What D’ohboy said was that “guys like” McNeil and Wey can round out the bottom pair, which is an important distinction. At the risk of putting words in his mouth, I think the point was more that 5th/6th/7th defensemen aren’t terribly hard to come by, so there’s no reason to be all that worried about it, rather than that those two guys specifically are going to be solid NHL players.
Reggie Savage was a first round pick who was a successful minor leaguer and then an unsuccessful NHLer.
Patrick Wey isn’t even an AHLer yet. Patrick McNeil has had some limited success in the AHL, with a big year ahead. Neither one of them have nearly the pedigree that Savage had, and Reggie Savage sure as hell wasn’t dismissed before he had a chance to prove himself as a professional. He shouldn’t have anything to do with this conversation.

I must say I’m a bit disappointed Em I thought for sure you would find a way to blame Peter Forsberg for ruining Orlov.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.
Our perceptions are unrealistic because we’ve been spoiled with the returns during the rebuild. Alzner is probably the last of the bunch. Plus, Carlznerson is among the top-20 defensive prospects at the league, I don’t think you’ll find anyone saying otherwise, and THN ranked Carlson #5 or so.
It’ll be slower, but hey, that’s what trades and late round gems are for.

I don’t think Mara’s going to be very expensive. He only played 42 games last year, and Montreal signed him for 1.6 million. I don’t see him signing for league minimum, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him get 1.2-1.3 million on a one-year deal from some team that needs another defenseman.
My point is more that there are other options out there besides Mitchell.
out west where he’s been his whole career.
Except for that whole time in Albany. And New Jersey. And Minnesota and Dallas, which aren’t exactly on the best coast.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I stand corrected. That does make things easier.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Probably venturing towards the OT here, but I listened to the Kovy press conference last month and I was struck by him including New Jersey’s great public schools on his reasons for staying with the Devils. I can attest for their greatness (I’ve moved my kids from MD to NJ to VA schools), but really – why would a millionaire hockey player send their kids to public school?

It’s no easy thing for him to pack up and move across a continent
Yeah, it is, when you have that much money.
Or when your employer is paying for it.
After many years in school of moving every year, it was pretty remarkable to watch the professional packers come in and pack my stuff back when I was hired by my current employer. Those folks are pretty amazing.

Mile High Hockey has a look at what teams spent last year vs. where they finished in the standing. Only the Coyotes had a better finish compared to their salary rank.

How about what teams spent last year vs. where they finished in the playoffs?

sadly, I’d be force to conclude that being the top spending team in the league and then needing the freaking gimmick on the last day of the season just to make the damn playoffs results in playoff success. And that just makes me feel dirty.

At hte end of the day, the first and third ranked payroll teams made the finals. The cheapskate Caps, with their 18th ranked payroll, just didn’t have enough firepower.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
actually, Chicago was ranked 13th, not 3rd. They finished 3rd overall in the regular season standings.

whoops, reading fail! Wouldn’t want to unintentionally insult of Nashville brethren. They did better than the caps as well, finishing 18 places higher than their payroll rank (Caps finished 17 spots higher)

Which word did you use for question (i don’t recognize the kanji after kyou no)? I had ‘ichimon’ in mind, but it didn’t sound right in my head.

The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

This may be off topic but it’s at least off topic related to the Capitals as opposed to off topic off topic. I was doing some housecleaning today (and some serious unjunking) and found a couple a “Let’s Get Digital” buttons that featured a Washington Capitals player of that era. I couldn’t figure out who the guy was (since I could not see a uniform number.)
Back in the day when Digital Computer Corp was a sponsor of the Caps. I was trying to figure out who the guy was. Dark hair, not too long.

Another D-man on the market
In order to free up space to make a Kovy signing, the Devs have put Bryce Salvador and his oversized contract on the market. Not saying I want him. Just saying
