It’s allegedly Willie Mitchell decision day. Think he’ll really make that announcement? I think the longer it goes the less likely it’ll be the Caps. It’s a lot of planning to move across the continent.

Well, they said possibly Monday or Tuesday.

Sadly, I don’t think it’ll be the Caps either, although planning a move across the continent is not impossible. Probably he’d have to coem out early and the family would follow as soon as they’d closed on a house.

We are the perfect leverage team for a situation like this: native BC’er with three western teams vying for services. I’m still going with SJ @ 2yr/5M.

um… def thought the announcement would happen by now (well after lunch). Perhaps he’s already been signed by the Caps, with Belanger, and GMGM is waiting for the right time to announce the trade of Flash. Must be a whale of a trade. (one can hope, right?)

Familiar faces: Mike Knuble was a mainstay on the Bruins’ top line with Joe Thornton and Glen Murray before the lockout and remains productive with Washington (his 29 goals and 53 points would have led Boston last year).

Emphasis mine. If that passage doesn’t illustrate their offensive struggles (because of injuries, among other things), then I don’t know what does.

Southleast? Maybe not for long. [Peerless]

Nicely done analysis by Peerless. FLA has some very, very good young players coming up to go along with an absolute raft of high draft picks this season (four in the top fifty and six in the top hundred, wasn’t it?). I don’t think they have a Toews-type player on their hands in Gudbranson (report here, if you scroll down), but they do have a lot of talent coming up. Specifically, Bjustad looks like a player with great upside if his skating comes along. Real shooting talent is hard to find.

Yzerman already managed to unload some of the anchor contracts on the Lightning and fleeced the Flyers out of quite a few assets in the process. If he continues in that direction, a core of Stamkos/Hedman/Vinnie/Connolly looks formidable, especially if Connolly can stay healthy. However, while neither Hedman nor Stamkos totally floundered in the NHL their first season, it might have been a better idea to leave them in Junior or the SEL, rather than start their clocks running on their ELCs. Stamkos may have needed the developmental step forward and clearly he could take it, but his RFA contract is going to be gigantic. That means that both of them are going to be on less efficient contracts when the team actually starts contending (and contend it will, just not this season) . That’ll hamper them, for sure and certain.

I’m not really sure what CAR is doing with their self-imposed budget. Is that a temporary ownership crisis? Will they spend to the cap again sometime in the near future? I don’t know the answers to these things, but I do know this: Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley are better players than Jeff Skinner.

Since the introduction of the Bettman Point, the average points pct league wide is, IIRC, something like .515. Just something for context as you read Peerless’ piece.

Absolutely true; teams do not “split” points available in any one game (i.e., two points in the old scoring). All we’re looking at is whether the teams captured a majority of the points available to them over the course of the season (164).

I was a big Panthers supporter before last season, but coming into this year, I think that they’ve regressed a little.

The Southeast still only has one legitimate playoff team in the Caps. I’m pretty sure that Tampa Bay will make it this year, but I don’t think that any of Florida, Carolina, or Atlanta will make it.

by RCheli on Aug 23, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think the Panthers are any good this season. Moving forward beyond that? They’re assembling a pretty good stockpile.

The ’Hawks and the Red Wings, Ducks, Canes and Lightning before them (I think I have the order right) won with a nice mix of exceptionally good players, but without a “generational” talent leading the pack.

Or maybe Lidstrom is that guy for the Wings. But whatever.

It looks to me like the Cup often goes to a good team that gets hot, versus a great team that dominates everyone.

I don’t know the answers to these things, but I do know this: Cam Fowler and Brandon Gormley are better players than Jeff Skinner.

Are you sure about that?

“The first time I saw Jeff I said, ‘Holy smoke, he looks just like Sidney Crosby’. It’s freaky how comparable they are. Jeff has the same frame as Sidney.

“Sidney Crosby is more explosive. But Jeff will get there. I think he’s going to be a really, really good player for the Hurricanes for a long time.”

If that man’s quote is correct, and he certainly would be an authority, than maybe the pick isn’t as bad as you might think.

Well, it’s too early to say for sure about any of this year’s draft picks. Too many variables, even if you just limit it to off the ice stuff, that can impact how high they produce in the big leagues.

Bu I’m not sure that you can put a whole ton of stock in what Gary Roberts says. Nothing against the man, but it could just as easily by blowing smoke.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

by fat_daddyo on Aug 23, 2010 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree it’s far, far too early to debate it. But Roberts has no real reason to hype Skinner up; yeah it’s his guy that he helps train but Gary doesn’t exactly go around heaping praise on everyone.

If Skinner’s impressed Roberts to even put him in the same breath as Crosby, that does impress me. That said, I think Roberts would tell you that there’s still a world of difference between the two.

SB Nation PIttsburgh

"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."

by Hooks Orpik on Aug 23, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Sid is probably the most complete hockey player of the last decade, and Skinner is an 18 year old that just got drafted, so, yeah, anyone that’s got two remaining brain cells would see a big difference between them.

The point I was trying to make was that it sounded more like informal, “yeah this kid’s got a great future, look at him his frame looks just like Crosby, he’s a real good, hardworking kid, etc” happy, encouraging talk, versus a real prediction of superstardom.

Was definitely not trying to knock Gary Roberts.

(I’ve re-written this post like 9 times because I keep ending up sounding like a dick, which I’m not trying to, so if you would, please work with me and interpret this in a way that is not condescending and prickish. Thanks.)

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

by fat_daddyo on Aug 23, 2010 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ve never seen Skinner play, but the knock on him I keep hearing is his skating. If his skating is suspect, Crosby is not a good comparable (not that he is a good comparable for anyone else really). I also don’t know how much of the comparison Roberts is making goes beyond size/appearance on the ice.

Skinner may turn out great, but with Carolina having an expensive 1C locked down and a whole lot of mediocrity on D I don’t like the pick from a Canes perspective.

Release the Mackan!

by Killer_Carlson on Aug 23, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Rutherford’s phobia of drafting defensemen has probably hurt the Canes overall. I think CnB or BtN showed that generally in the first two rounds defensemen have the best success rate for picks (in terms of a GP threshold).

Don’t sleep on his acceleration — when he hits the gap, he really explodes through it. He’s not as smooth as some and he’ll never be the fastest player in the league, but he puts on a lot of speed in a hurry.

If Skinner really has trouble skating, then I bet he goes to wing and becomes a PP specialist, especially if his shot is as good as the scouts say it is.

"Essentially, all models are wrong, but some are useful" George E.P. Box

by Knee high to a duck on Aug 24, 2010 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t love the pick, but the consensus from some pretty good scouts is that Skinner was a bit of a reach at that spot and that at least two of Gudbranson/Fowler/Gormley would be gone by that point, because they were superior prospects. Could Skinner end up as a better player than all of them? It’s certainly possible. That said, the safe money is on Fowler and Gormley, in my mind. If the scouting reports are right, then all of them could end up with elite-level hockey sense, but Fowler and Gormley are better skaters and Fowler especially has better puck skills.

So based on OFB “beautification” consists of Mike Green writing graffiti in Spanish in the main hall?

I think it’s funny how Cap’s fans try and compare the current caps roster with succesfull teams of the past. I’ve heard all sorts of teams such as the current article with the Ducks, I’ve heard the Oilers dynasty teams, the Islanders dynasty teams. It almost seems like we use all sorts of reasoning to ease our anxious inner thoughts that say, “Another year, another early exit, what if we never win one!” I feel like the current Caps are a unique NHL team that has not been seen before in the past. We have yet to really accomplish anything that matters in my eyes but hopefully some sort of Cup success will occur. The, “Were young, we’ll get ours one day” excuses need to go out the door. Personally I can’t stand that excuse anymore.

On the other hand, every team is unique. Championship teams are very very strong, plain and simple, and have a model that works. What the Caps have now might work—-or it may never. SCC teams’ models we know can work.

That stained look is just a look, if you don’t seal it yourself that wood will age to gray and brittle in no time. Should’ve had the O unit there to put a shellacking on it.

I just saw on NHL.com that Huet is apparently being loaned to a Swiss team this season – guess that’s better than the AHL. Also, there was a poll question asking who you would rather have take a shootout for your team: Crosby, Jussi Jokinen, or Ovie. Jussi, who just happens to be the most successful shootout man in the NHL, is in 3rd. Seriously? People would rather have Ovie (who’s what, 30% or so?) take the shootout over Jussi (who I believe is close to 70%)?

here’s Puck Daddy on Huet-to-Switzerland. sigh. I was really hoping they’d be stuck with that massive cap hit all season.

@reidder: Mitchell and Morrison both skating with the #canucks at UBC. Willie is wearing a generic jersey. http://tweetphoto.com/40

Would he be practicing with a team if he were about to sign with someone else?

I think I read that the Canucks want some more proof that he’s actually alright, so they want him to skate for them for a week or two more.

Willie Mitchell has returned to Vancouver after visiting Washington and the Capitals. According to Jason Botchford of The Province, there are reports that the Kings already have an offer on the table. No word on the Capitals’ thoughts yet. The Canucks are remaining cautious with Willie and want him to participate in more rigorous drills at training camp to know for sure that his concussion symptoms are eradicated. This may drag out for a few weeks yet.

If other teams have offered him contracts, really sounds like he’d prefer to stay in Vancouver if he’s agreed to this. Perhaps that’s overanalyzing, but it’s a little disappointing.

Since Morrison hasn’t signed yet either, it sounds like just a local skate for the locals boys, kinda like how Jeff Halpern always skates at KCI in the summer.
Hopefully BMo’s telling him good things about the team, not just about how they wouldn’t give him any time on the PP.

Does someone know if a sign a trade with vancouver will work for willie mitchell? I don’t know how it’ll work but I figure if Flash is getting trade maybe it can be a sign and trade with willie mitchell.

I thought I’d ask the experts.

I’d be surprised… Vancouver seems to want Mitchell. If they sign him, I don’t think they’ll trade him.

Sign-and-trade doesn’t make sense in the context of an unrestricted free agent like Mitchell. It only makes sense when the team has RFA rights of the player they’re signing. If Vancouver does sign Mitchell, though, seems very possible that the ’Nucks might ship Bieksa to DC in a subsequent trade.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
