Semin’s accident sounds almost exactly like one I had about 25 years ago. I was driving up to the Orioles’ game and got rear ended by some guy, I think when I was stopping at a light and he did not stop in time. The guy was driving a new car that he still hadn’t told his insurance company about. Ironically enough, he was actually going to the game, as well.

I thought this quote from that article was interesting:
Semin, 26, is a regular visitor to Krasnoyarsk, where he was born. During the summer off-season he runs coaching masterclasses for young players in the town, where he is regarded as a hero after helping Russia to win the 2008 World Championship in Canada.
Imagine all the young Russian players going to these classes and worshiping Semin. Maybe we’ll see some of them end up in the NHL later on, like Kuznetsov.
I guess the Lada is in the Danger Zone.
The guy is Peter Schumpmaker. Lord knows what a schump is, but you can bet your bippy his ancestors made them. What he's doing is far worse than crafting fine schumps.

Toronto Sun ripped off some translations of Tomas Kaberle’s father from Czech to English that were done by a member of PPP and posted there two days before the Sun. Then the Sun reporter claimed he used Google Translate to do the translations instead of giving credit. The translations are word-for-word, and as someone who studied translation, there’s a Semin-giving-Pronger-a-concussion-and-then-fighting-Carcillo chance of that happening.

Is the Hockey News top 50 list available on their site? I can’t find it.

Really good Caps Report this week. The segment with Tarik was hilarious and bittersweet. They told some great war stories.
And then after, Vogel said that he didn’t know what was happening with Belanger, but that the whole story sounded wrong to him. (He was careful to say that Mirtle is a reliable source). Vogel sometimes has access to inside information, or at least inside “vibe,” so I wouldn’t be surprised if when September rolls around Eric Belanger ain’t a Cap.

If that’s the case then Katie will have failed her first big test since she reported independently that Belanger and the Caps had agreed to terms. I think/hope the story is true and the holdup is the defenseman deal.
I disagree. Reporting what someone says is part of a reporter’s job. I have no doubt she was told what she wrote.

I’d want to spend one night in Pittsburgh. 2 night hotel stay seems excessive for just one game — unless there were other things they wanted to do in Pittsburgh.
(My in-laws moved out of Pittsburgh over 20 years ago so that’s no longer an option. Then, they lived there just long enough to convince my husband’s two youngest siblings to turn over to the “dark side”.)

I’m likely to be flying out the afternoon/evening of the game. What is the prevailing wisdom on earliest flight time on the afternoon/evening of the 1st to allow for an OT and traffic, etc.?

Assuming you’d be going from Heinz direct to the airport, expect 30 minutes without traffic on I-376. However, who knows what it’ll be like on a holiday after a big time sporting event.
Assuming a 1:30 pm start, with silly intermission gimmicks and possible OT, call it a 4:30 pm end time. While PIT airport’s security is lightning fast and efficient, I wouldn’t book a flight out before 7 pm. That’s just me though.
One thing that should keep airport traffic somewhat light (at least looking at it in DC terms) is that January 1 is Saturday, which means it’s not the end of the holiday period.

I just checked, and I can still get frequent flyer tickets from STL to PIT on the 31st. Not so much on the 1st.
However, there is a flight at 7:00pm the evening of the 1st through O’Hare on American for $150 one-way. Not cheap, but I can stomach that.

Just looked at the seating chart – the $149 seats do NOT guarantee you will be in the lower level. There is a section of the upper level that is $149 seats.
#NeedsMoreBradley
You are correct that there are some dark green seats in the 500 level, and that may be all that’s left next week, but my ticket rep told me when I signed up that they had sold less than 50 packages, and he was 99% sure that I would be lower bowl.

(cant remember if im allowed to discuss espninsider stuff here, BUT) did anyone else see that the Blues offered Jackman or Brewer to the Caps this offseason. I love Jackman and think flash in return would get it done. Why no trigger pull? Any thoughts? (and yes i know how much the mods love intermittent posters chasing trade rumors)

I think it was discussed around the trade deadline.
One person’s perspective out in the STL is that it would depend on what we gave up.
Right now, I would slot both behind our top 5 defensemen: 52, 55, 74, 27 and 3. Brewer is large, but he just isn’t a leader and I don’t see much passion. Jackman has a mean streak, but takes too many risks for me and seem to leave his brain on the bench too many shifts.
I would not have protested, had we traded Della Rovere for either one, but I think either would be in the 3rd pairing. Unfortunately, I think it would take more value than Della Rovere to pry one away. I don’t think it would be salary dump, but I could be wrong.

Even if they are both third pairing guys (which I think may be debatable), they are still a huge upgrade over Sloskine, so I wouldn’t mind either one coming to the Caps.

Depends on the asking price. For the right price, I agree.

Isn’t Brewer wearing the C?
Also, the report is that this is the first offseason in a while that he has been able to train while healthy. That might make a difference.

Wasn’t Clark when he became a Blue Jacket?

I don’t think that’s a relevant comparison. Clark, by all reports, was a great Captain. One of the reasons Cbus wanted him was his leadership.

Most pundits here in the 314 think he can’t get rid of that C fast enough, and I agree.
Backes or Johnson should be wearing it, and now. I’m surprised it hasn’t already happened.
I see a lot of Blues games, and FWIW, I just don’t see him as a leader like OV or like Staal or Koivu or Toews or other captains. A young team trying to find its footing, like the Blues, needs a true leader. Brewer is not that.
He would be better as the Caps’ 6D than as captain of the Blues.

He might be better for it, but the Caps wouldn’t be better for having a 6th D who’s paid $4,250,000. I’m not sure I’d even be happy with Jackman for two years of Tom Poti money.

Agreed. I did not consider salary for a second in my comment.

The Caps can afford Brewer as “6D” at $4.25 mil for one year when two of their top 5D earn under a mil.

I haven’t seen many Blues games so I can’t say.
I’d rather have a guy like that on the 2nd pairing than the 3rd (keep pressure off the rookies, and considering the salary), but whatever it takes to keep Sloskine from getting a regular sweater.

Brewer doesn’t look very good through advanced stats. Jackman looks decent.

BB Performance Review
Gouldie noted yesterday that the flameout v. Montreal was perhaps not such an indictment of Bruce’s coaching, if you accept the fact that the Caps simply weren’t a team that could win a Cup.
I still have my reservations regarding Boudreau, but I will say that upon reflection, I think the part about the roster not being strong enough to win a Cup is accurate. The 121 points papered over some significant holes on the team, and lead to the false sense, at least in my case, that the Caps had the potential to dominate in a strong playoff run. In the end, they were a potent but fatally flawed team.
We all know the flaws: not enough skill and depth at Center, not enough strength on D after Mike Green.
Those flaws have not (yet) been addressed, which leads me to conclude that the team really can’t expect to win this year.
That said, what are the implications for Boudreau? In my mind, this is a tryout season for BB. Let him show that he has internalized the lessons of ‘09 – ’10. If he hasn’t, then we can call for his head. And then with either an improved Boudreau or a new coach, plus a better seasoned Carlznerson and Mackan, the roster will be better equipped for the playoffs.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I think another year of experience for Green, Schultz, Backstrom, and the goalies mean the team should be better. With that said, I really hope they do worse in the regular season. I’m serious about that. I think they’ll be better prepared for the playoffs if they learn some lessons in the regular season.

I agree with that. I think the 121 points and the streak also instilled perhaps a little too much confidence into the team last year.
I think they take a 8 – 15 point step backwards this year. Meaning that they’re really a 106 – 113 point point team. In theory, that should get them better focused coming into the playoffs.

These'd be good Clips in season.

Wow — dchesnokov tweeting some serious Ovechkin observations made on Radio Sport (assume that’s in Russia):
Ovechkin (on Radio Sport) said quite a few players on the Russian National Team pay money to someone to be on the team. Serious accusations.
Ovechkin on Radio Sport: “Right now in Russia money decides everything.”
Ovechkin on the future of sport in RU: “You walk by a school and see young people with beer, cigarettes, they’re not interested in sports.”
Before the ‘10 Oly Ovechkin mentioned that the ’06 RUS Oly team had a few “passengers.” He is the 1st player who’s very outspoken about it.
The ice will show everything.
Whoa. That’s some serious stuff he’s putting out there.
