I’d actually say the gold medal game, even though we ended up losing. I was watching with about 15 friends, and when Parise tied the game up with only seconds left, it was the closest I’ve ever come to collective orgasming from hockey.

Goodness….I think I cheered louder when Parise tied that game than when Carlson won the WJC gold medal

And of course, who had to score the OT game winner? Of all people. Sidney Crosby. I learned to hate him not only as a Caps fan, but now as an American as well. As far as losses goal, it was the Ultimate Loss.

Was there ever any question that if the game went into overtime, the OT goal would be scored by Himself?
So it was written.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
It was so frustrating how I’d gotten up in the middle of a school night, my internet was being bad so I had to watch the game in Russian on TV, and sure enough, after all that effort…

Well, I answered the question in regards to my favorite game. The gold medal game is the most memorable. As you and YLM have elaborated, I was on probably the greatest emotional high sports has ever given me after the Parise goal.
And then, Sid. Fuck him, you know?

Unless you’re a Caps (or Flyers) fan, I don’t think you truly understand the hatred for Crosby. And after the Olympics, Pens fans who’re trying to argue the whole “Crosby > Ovechkin” thing say “Nya nya nya, Crosby’s won a gold medal and the Cup, and Ovie’s won nothing.” The fact that Pittsburgh fans (presumably most of whom are American) are glad Canada beat the U.S. in the Olympics just exponentially increases their douchebaggotry factor. I love the Caps, but I’d still cheer for the U.S. over Russia or Sweden in the Olympics. Because I’m, you know, American.

If I recall it as reported correctly, Buffalo played in Pittsburgh right after the Olympics and Miller got a louder cheer than Crosby. Just that once.

The Olympic goal cemented my dislike for Crosby as a whole (though I like Sid the player), because when it comes down to it I’d rather my country win gold than the Preds win the Cup.

If i had to choose, I’d much rather the Caps win the Cup than the U.S. win gold.
However, I’d prefer the U.S. win a war to the Caps winning a Cup.

Agreed on the latter count, and the former is certainly your prerogative.
I value international competitions like Olympic hockey and the World Cup very highly, and you’ve gone much, much longer without the Caps winning a Cup than the Predators, so your suffering is greater.

I don’t know that that’s accurate, based on comments by some of our regular Pens fan visitors.

You’re right CC. With confidence I can say a huge majority of Penguin fans (myself included) were cheering 100% for the US to win that game.
But there was the feeling afterwards that “if we had to lose, at least it was Crosby that got to get the glory”.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
To further the point
And correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Crosby get boo’d (albeit mostly in jest I’m sure) when he was announced at the following Pens home game? I thought I read it somewhere, but could be wrong.
You gotta run to a window and say: "Hey, these floors are dirty as hell, and I'm not gonna take it anymore!"
Yes, it was a home game against Buffalo; Crosby was “booed” and Miller received a standing ovation, and then didn’t play.

Right. Sort of.
They showed a highlight reel of the Olympics and then Miller received a loud ovation. Crosby was jeered a little when the camera cut to him, but it wasn’t by a large percentage of the crowd, but obviously it stood out especially considering who it was to.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Sorry, I thought I had typed “some Pens fans”. Notice I didn’t say “all.”
I realize most Pens fans cheered for the U.S. (and unlike the Caps, at least you had one player on the U.S. team!), but you can’t deny there were some who were glad Canada won. Specifically, a Pens fan who works in my office and I talk about hockey with every day.

Yep, forgot to add this. I absolutely freaked out when Parise scored (he’s also my favorite non-Cap). That sure was a spectacular moment. And I was a lot more disappointed than I thought it would be when we lost it in overtime.

J.P. said he’d rather see the Caps win the Cup than the U.S. win gold, and I agree, but there’s a certain emotional connection to one’s national team we’ll never have for club teams. I think part of it comes from the fact that for the most part, NHL players don’t come from the city they play for, whereas national team players all come from the place they’re representing. You don’t choose a place because they’ll pay you the most—you’re born into it.

Thing with me is though, I’m not even a true American. I’ve lived here since I was about 6, but I’m not going to lie, I was rooting for Sweden and Russia before the U.S. simply because they had players I cared more for. After watching U.S. beat Canada the first time it definitely made me pull for the U.S. a lot more than I had been. So much that by the time the gold medal game rolled around I was thrilled that it was the U.S. there and not Russia/Sweden. That’s why I say I’m surprised by how disappointed I was when they lost. But I definitely agree that even though I’d rather see the Caps win the Cup, there is a different emotional connection attached with national teams.

I was at the Caps game as well, following along on twitter and internet as much as possible. I remember boarding the metro train to go home figuring our chances were all but over. I get to my truck, turn on NHL Home Ice just in time to hear the game get tied up and find out OT was upcoming! I got home just in time to watch the OT period.

Caps-Canes from early 2008-2009. Semin scored twice in the last 160 seconds to win 3-2. I remember AO and Semin 2-on-2 coming down, AO with the puck, everyone on the edge of their seats, with an audible collective holding-of-the-breath, and he passed, and Semin did the classic Semin-wrister. There was also a trail of blood afterwards since Semin had cut Rod Brind’Amour in the face, but they didn’t even bother to clean it up.
I also liked the Caps 5-2 Pens game from that season since that was my third Caps-Pens game in the Ovechkin era but only my first win.
I was also at the TBL game in which Pothier scored, and everyone gave him a standing ovation.

This was simply amazing. We were in a suite with q whollllllle bunch of older gentlemen- BU grads. The suite next to us was a whole bunch of Miami fans. For some reason, the Miami fans thought it wise to start the ball busting well before the game was over. Terrible idea. Amazing outcome.

Of course… I go to BU… was at every game the entire season… and the National Championship…
So nothing will probably ever beat that for me.
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom

One more year!
Doesn’t look good though, pretty sure BC will be the cream of the crop again this year as they returned most of the national championship team from last year.

BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
My BU class (92-96) experiences 17 consecutive wins against BC, and would have gone completely undefeated except we lost the last game in the last season against them. Otherwise, we would never have known loss to BC.
Sigh
I guess we’ve actually played BC well while I’ve been here.
Got swept 07-08
3-0-1 including a HE Semi 08-09
2-2 This year… including the win at Fenway but a Beanpot Final loss
Good thing we both got to see BU win NCs though!

BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
Probably the 2009 Frozen Four final. BU scoring twice in the last minute to tie and then winning in OT. I didn’t have much of a rooting interest but felt just awful for Miami.
In my case, we did have rooting interest in BU since my first born child is a BU alum and was visiting us that week. We were about ready to give up on that game. (Except the only alternative at the time was to watch the Caps get killed by Florida.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
What’s the saying? Losing feels ten times worse then winning feels good? I’ve always thought that was garbage, but for that game it might have been true.
I admit that if I had been a Miami fan, I would have been beyond pissed. It would have been a “snatching a loss out of the jaws of victory” sort of loss.
That was one of the rare times in my lifetime of following sports where I was actually rooting for the top dog. All other things being equal, I’m more likely to root for the underdog. (Another time I rooted for the top dog was in the mid to late 70’s Indiana University basketball team since a friend of mine had transferred to that institution.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
No way… the way they lost was only as bad as the way we won was good…
I was 13 rows up in the make shift student section when Bonino tied the game up and when I came out of the mosh bit I was on the 2nd row.. I’ve never felt anything remotely like that goal, and the game winner was pretty close to the same.
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom

I second the Snowvechkin game. There was this great feeling inside VC that we all made it to the game together to share our passion.

I’m hoping Game 7 of Caps vs. Habs isn’t still on my short list 10 years from now. Somehow I don’t imagine that emotional roller-coaster will ever really fade from my memory. The Hurricanes game when Rock The Red started. as a life long fan I knew this was good and something really amazing was on the verge of happening. it was the coolest sight. all of the games that season and the ones before it where we could barely get 8,000 people in the seats. any person who has been thru it all can vouch for how amazing that one game was.
That game was great.
I had free tickets to that game from the Caps as a thank you for being a partial plan holder (those were the days). Ovechkin’s goal where he spun and fired what was essentially a no-look wrister on net was amazing. I remember a Carolina defenseman putting his arms up like “what the hell am I supposed to do?”

The Super Bowl Sunday game vs. Pittsburgh. Not only the breathtaking game itself—the fact that it was on Super Bowl Sunday (and ended up being more exciting than the actual Super Bowl), during the middle of the Snowpocalypse, with a bunch of dramatic non-hockey factors going on. It was about as Disney-story as you could imagine. Down 4-1, I was pooping my pants from sadness and my Philadelphian roommate specifically said “I don’t think you’re going to win this one” to which I replied “I’ve got hope.” Who would’ve thought we’d win with a fucking Ovie hat trick and a goal in overtime. NBC couldn’t have asked for a better game.

Jake, I’ll give you credit for being more of an optimist than I was when the Caps were down 4-1. I had given up on them at one point and went upstairs to hop on the computer. But followed enough of the action to know that Ovi was getting them back in the game and went back downstairs to watch.

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I don’t really have a favorite, but I sure have a particularly memorable one: Easter Sunday, 2003, when St. Louis and the Lightning took the Caps down in triple overtime. It was pretty memorable by virtue of the fact that it was a triple overtime game, naturally, but what I really remember was how I felt walking out of the arena.
I was legitimately worried about the Capitals as a franchise – it seemed obvious the Jagr extension had been a mistake, obvious Cassidy has no idea what the hell he was doing, obvious that building around Jagr by bringing in his buddies was a bad idea. The was dressing Ciernik, Doig, and Kwiatkowski every night. The attendance for that game couldn’t have been more than 13,000. The franchise hadn’t hit rock bottom, but it was obvious they didn’t really know what they were doing and scrapping the whole thing and starting over was going to become a necessity, and I was just praying the team realized that.
Sitting through the 03-04 season with that knowledge led to a few heated debates with friends who were upset with the fire sale, and more in the ensuing couple of years when it was trendy to insist the team had failed and Leonsis didn’t care. Oh, well, I guess I’ve won those now.
That game was made memorable too by that jackass from the TBL radio broadcast.
I can still hear him scream/squealing “SAINT LOUWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!” to this day.

Caps v. Rangers, game 7, Round 1 2008-2009 playoffs
I have been to a lot (and I mean a LOT) of sporting events, but I’ve never experienced a stadium/arena as loud and as pumped as when Fedorov scored that go-ahead goal with 5 minutes remaining.
Nobody (and I mean NOBODY) sat down or stopped screaming for the entire 5 minutes of game that proceeded. Deafening loudness. It was truly an awesome event to be a part of, and I’ll never forget it.

Yep, agree on this one. Been a Caps fan for 30 years, it was the first time I’d seen them win a series in person. That five minutes was epic. My wife was pregnant and I turned to her and said “We’re naming our kid Sergei”. (We didn’t.)
With Ovi jumping on Fed’s back after that goal, my son started to cry in joy and disbelief at the end of the game, and everyone around us was high-fiving each other. The sound in the arena was unbelievable. I had never experienced anything like that before.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Ovi’s four-goals-and-a-broken-nose game. I went with a group taking advantage of student discount tickets, and the only other person who’d been to a NHL game before was a Habs fan. It was great just because of how the tides turned and everyone’s looks of amazement afterward, and one of my friends saying “you were right, number eight was the one to watch.”

Same. Game 7 against the Rangers was euphoric, Game 7 against the Pens and Habs were devastating.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
And what made it worse is that I had a bad feeling going into Game 7 against the Habs.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Hmmm
Probably the Caps – Panthers game that clinched the SE Division. Also the Caps – Rangers game where Semin put on his Bongo performance.
The Caps – Habs game where Ovechkin scored while falling down, Caps – Pens when Crosby and Ovechkin had the “incident”, and also Ovie’s first game vs. Columbus.
The first Caps game I went to was also memorable.

I don’t even remember the games I saw when I was in High School so as great as the 1998 run to the Stanley Cup finals was I have to DQ that entire year. I think the two most memorable I have been to were the Penguins game the day after the huge blizzard and a game against Montreal in 2008 where Ovie bounced the puck off the board and then made the goal while sliding on his ass.
Boston College winning the NCAA title (in OT) in 2001 over North Dakota. I was a senior at BC, and we’d been in the Frozen Four three out of the four years I was a student, and we finally got it in ’01. BC had last won the title in 1949. Campus exploded with awesome. It was fabulous.
I was at that game. One of the alum from my HS hockey team scored for BC in that game.

Hey, my son was a BC freshman that year. What a game that was, after ND tied it at the end of regulation.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
I know, it was epic. Your son was probably peering over the fences they set up around the Mods to keep underclassmen out. :)
It was such a great win cause we’d lost to Michigan in OT my freshman year, when the Frozen Four was held in Boston (basically home ice). There were no restrictions on the Mods that year, so I was there when a bunch of dudes set all their furniture on fire. And was subsequently sprayed with a fire hose as part of crowd control/fire fighting. Ahhh, college.
Of course, beating Notre Dame in 2008 was pretty sweet too. And Wisconsin this year (as revenge for 2006).

Agree with that sentiment. I can’t root for BC for several reasons. 1) They are BU’s natural rival; 2) My younger daughter’s arch-rival goes there; 3) Brooks Orpik went there.
(All right, all right, my elder daughter did have one friend that attended BC so I can’t totally hate on them. For game's I've been in the crowd at...
Still remember the date: 12/23/02. Mario Lemieux scores directly off a face-off in a game in Pittsburgh against the Sabres. I think the Straka/Lemieux/Kovalev line combined for 3 goals in like one period to cap a rally, it was the most dominant performance by a trio I’ve ever seen. Seemed like every time they stepped on the ice, they’d put the puck in the net on some crazy bang-bang-bang play.
Runner up would be Game 2 Caps v. Pens, dueling hat tricks from Sid and AO. Even if the Caps won, it was something special….Even if you guys don’t seem to understand that once all the hats are picked up, it’s not appropriate to throw a stray one on the ice :)

I have vivid memories of the game where Semin destroyed Staal in a manly fight and the game where Ovechkin banked the puck off the boards and around Hamrlik.
I still remember watching “The Goal” live on TV, too.

Most memorable on TV – ‘98 SC Finals, the Tikanen Game (not in a good way, but it’s memorable all right).
Most memorable in person – 1986 Patrick Division Semis, vs the Isle. First playoff game I attended live. Caps won. It was great. It was eye-opening how much buzz and energy the building had.
Favorite on TV – Miracle on Ice. Including Rene Poussaint blowing the suspense on a “newsbreak”. It was still such a great feeling.
Favorite in person – It’s funny, I don’t remember the opponent, but it was the first time I’d seen AO live, and it was during his rookie season. Maybe it was the Canes? Anyway, AO scored twice and I had the exact same feeling I’d had when I’d first seen Gretzky live: “Holy shit, this guy is playing on a different level.” That was when I had faith that the Caps were going to right the ship, and I was so glad that hockey was being played again.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
That’s funny. The first time I saw Ovechkin play I just “So, that was Ovechkin. Huh. Okay.”
To be fair, he was a -2 on the night, had a secondary assist on a powerplay, and the Caps lost 7-3. And it was only his second NHL game.
The game I saw he had three rushes down the left side. One he just overwhelmed the D and was by him before anyone could do anything about it. Another he started about 10 feet behind an opposing forward in pursuit of a loose puck, tracked him down and blew by everyone else on the way to the goal. The third, which he did not score on, he picked up a loose puck, turned and burned for the offensive zone, and uncorked a hell of a slap shot which nearly decapitated the goalie, who barely flinched it got on him so fast.
The package of speed and power was like nothing I’d ever seen before. It obviously helped that they won, though.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I thought my answer would be different (G7 vs. the Rangers? Final regular season game of 2007-08?) But it turns out the game I’m most pleased to have been at was this one.

Can’t believe I’m the first to post that.
The ice will show everything.
For what it’s worth I would’ve, but I didn’t understand/appreciate the magnitude until later. The best (or most fun) game I’ve watched and understanding the stage and players was the CC. That’s star talent (on both sides) we may never see again, IMHO.

NHL 94. For SNES. That game still keeps me on the edge of my seat, each time Modano comes across the crease for the easy far-side goal, or Fedorov blasts through the D and triple dekes for a spectacular finish. And you can’t forget Roenick … he’s good.

I’ve seen too many memorable games to pick one, but if I’m limiting it to games I’ve seen in person Game 3 against the Rangers in 2009 might be one of the best. Caps are down 2-0 in the series, hold a slim 1-0 lead in the game and Callahan has a wide open net before Backstrom single-handedly turns the game (and series) around. His defensive play, followed by the rush up the ice then the awesome counter check on Callahan before assisting on the goal to make it 2-0 instead of 1-1 was one of the best plays I’ve seen in person.
That the Caps went on to win 4-0 and shut up all the obnoxious Rags fans that had their chests puffed up before the game made that play all the sweeter to see live.

On January 5, 2010 I had the great privilege to be in the Phonebooth to see Alexander Ovechkin lead his Washington Capitals team onto the ice with the captain’s “C” on his sweater.
The visitors that night were the Montreal Canadiens*, and as the oldest and most storied franchise in the National Hockey League, it was appropriate for them to bear witness.
I never bother buying the program, but I did for that game. It had Chris Clark on the cover.

One honorable mention, which is, in retrospect, a disappointment. I remember attending Jagr’s first home game as a member of the Caps. It may have even been an exhibition. The entire MCIC was staring at him with a collective “He is fucking huge” and “Cup, here’s we come.” How wrong were we?

Wow! I can’t believe noone has mentioned this one. I must be getting old, but I was about 5 rows behind Hextall laying in the goal while the Caps mobbed Dale Hunter after his OT winner knocked the Flyers out of the playoffs, and a million ghosts out of the Cap Center. I had no voice for 4 days, and I will never forget it.
100% Larry Murphy to Hunter in OT is the best!!
The comeback last year vs the rangers and a similar one against the Kings many years ago where the caps scored I think 4 goals in the last five minutes.
And Backstroms Hat trick in OT last year against Chicago.
Ice Breakers>Goal Shakers....THE CAPS !!
Wow, someone else remembers that Kings game? It was 3 goals in the last six minutes, 2 of which were in the last minute, but yeah, that was awesome. Stevens and Christian had the last two, I believe, and Mike Millar had the previous one. Glenn Healy was the Kings’ goalie. 4-4 tie. It was February, 1989, Gretzky’s first visit to the Cap Centre as a King, I believe. That was quite a game.

My family and I were vacationing in SoCal and staying at my in-laws time share in Palm Springs. We had driven to Anaheim the night before and spent a full day at Disneyland. We left at about 5:00pm PST to head back. We got stuck in SoCal rush hour traffic, and I got the game on XM. It was just incredible. Wife and kids started paying attention and couldn’t believe it either. My only wish was that it had been the Caps’ announcers and not the Rangers.

Ugh, that was a terrible series. Seriously, one of the most boring 7 game series ever. I think there were one or two games that were close in that series, the rest were over after the winning team scored early. Yeah, Ray got his Cup, and that was fine, but the quality of hockey in that series was among the worst in Stanley Cup I’ve ever witnessed.

Caps v. Sens from the ‘06-’07 season. The most random selection ever but it’s always the first one I remember. I was still a relatively young and new fan back then and the Caps were down 3-0 within 10 minutes of the first. Kolzig was pulled, which I was semi pumped about because I had never seen Johnny play and in those days the Caps were pretty miserable offensively and there was no way they could rally from a 3 goal deficit. Clark won us the game in overtime 4-3, and hearing the building was something special. Even though it was half empty, it was fun to be there and hear the reaction from all the die-hard Caps fans. Johnny and Clark were the 1st and 2nd stars. I’m sure not many people remember this game, but it has stuck in my mind ever since. Other than that, the game v. the Panthers in 2008 where we clinched a playoff spot. Although I definitely wasn’t as emotionally involved as I am now because I don’t remember being nervous at all and there is no way now that I could sit through a game that intense/important today.

April 24 1996 Game 4 of Easter Conference Quarterfinals PITT-WAS
Foreword: I am writing this without looking at what other game people have picked so far.
I originally was going to pick the Easter Epic in 1987 vs NYI but since I was 12 and my memory isn’t as fresh on the game as the one I have chosen
I was visiting my Mom in Oshawa, Ontario after my 3rd year university and spending a few days in the house in which I grew up. I saw TSN was covering the Caps-Pens playoff series and thought, bonus, I don’t see many Caps games while at school so what good timing. In those days TSN’s hockey coverage was by Paul Romanuk (a short guy who used to do TSN’s news coverage on Sportsdesk and happened to be from my hometown) and Gary Green (one-time Caps coach during the lean early 80s). No Jim Hughson among them but they were serviceable.
The Caps were up 2-1 in the series and being a fan since the early 80s, I had seen multiple heartbreaking series and games from the team From the get-go, this game was one of the most up-tempo, exciting games I have ever seen. And one of the most bizarre. Vezina-candidate Jim Carey was yanked early on leaving the Caps to ride their backup(Olie Kolzig).Pens goalie Tom Barasso left after a period for the Pens with an injury and Ken Wregget was called upon.
Then late in the 1st came one of the most bizarre episodes I have seen watching hockey: Mario went nutso. 66 didn’t like something Todd “Hands of Stone” Krygier had done to him and went ballistic. Retaliating by mugging and instigating a fight with Krygier in plain sight, he was ejected from the game.
The game was really the birth of the Olie legend. Through three periods, the Caps were outshot 42-21 Everytime Jagr touched the puck I held my breath expecting the worst to happen (at that time Jagr I thought was the most scary, dominant player in the game with his size and skill). Olie was amazing making save after save. teh game ended 2-2 after regulation. In overtime, the tables were turned and the Caps had oppurtunity after oppurtunity outshooting the Pens 37-12 in the 4-OT periods. Wregget was amazing, and this is coming from someone who held him on the same level that people hold Vesa Toskala today.
Pivonka and Bondra scored in the first two periods giving the Caps a 2-0 lead until late in the second Jagr cut the deficit to one. With 12 minutes left in regulation, Nedved
scored on the PP with Pivonka in the box tying the game at 2
In the first OT there was the amazing sight of Dale Hunter flooring Jagr with a check and him getting back up only to be levelled by Sergei Gonchar and then Mark Tinordi.
Of course any Caps fan who saw the game can tell you the missed penalty shot in the 2nd OT is what will haunt them most. Pens D-man Chris Tamer intentionally lifted the net from its moorings creating a delay of game penalty shot. Caps coach Jim Schoenfeld could choose any Caps player on the ice to take the shot, Bonzai was on the bench so he chose Joey Juneau. The USAir ice was choppy and rugh and the puck ended up rolling and out of the grasp of JJ. Wregget ended making the easy save. I still can picture that shot in my head and likely always will.
It was after 2 am and late in the 4th OT when the game ended. Caps D-man Jim Johnson was in the box and under a minute left remained in the period. Nedved took the puck, skated around a collapsing Mark Tinordi and scored from the left circle. Olie said later he never even knew it went in until someone grabbed him. I don’t think I ever was as exhausted after a game. I would say it was numbing but I still remember feeling as if my heart was ripped out. The Caps would end up losing the the next two games and the series 4-2, the final game the last ever at the USAir Center.

On TV – ’98 EC Finals Game 6.
In person – The game that included this.

December 11/93 Caps vs. the Candiens. Being from the Maritimes, I don’t get to see NHL hockey unless on tv. Being a long time Caps fan, I made the 8 hour trek to Montreal to see my team play. Great on many levels. First time in Montreal and the old Forum, wow what atmosphere that place had. The Caps beat the Habs 5-3 and I got to finally see NHL hockey live.
Winning is everything. The only ones who remember you when you come second are your wife and your dog.
Wow, I was at that game too! Made the trek up from Boston with another Caps’ fan, where I was studying at BU. I remember Pivonka had a couple in that game. First and last time I’d seen a game in Montreal, something absolutely amazing. What a place to watch a game, and the Caps won on top.
I liked that Finals Game 4 between the Rags and Vancouver in ’94
(Canucks 1st Cup appearance, and Rags first championship in 54 years)
Canucks start out with a 2-0 lead but the Rangers come back. Late in the game Pavel Bure beams a scorcher off the crossbar from the high slot and it bounces back to start a fast-break the other way where the Rangers seal the win. (Boo)
"Tikkanen's miss was not as dramatic as the penalty shot Joe Juneau missed in Washington's quadruple-overtime playoff loss to Pittsburgh two years [previous]." - Washington Post game recap 6/12/98
That was mine too. I was at a bar outside of Philly watching that with friends from work. Of course I was the only Caps fan there, and they wouldn’t leave it alone, talking about how the Caps were no match for the Flyers and how Ovechkin was over-rated. Then the third period happened – Mike Green tied up the score and Ovi put in the game winner (the picture of Biron falling down was my screensaver at work for 2 years). It was dee-lightful.
"HISTORY DOESN’T MATTER!!! .... Who cares if it’s never been done? We aren’t those teams who failed before. We are in control of our own destiny, and we will make it happen our own way.." - A Gordon, June 2010

As far as recent memory goes, and counting only games in person, 2 come to mind.
1) The 10-2 win over Boston (March 3, 2008?) – Ovechkin hat trick in first, 50, 51, 52 etc
2) Ovechkin vs MTL – spin & pass to self off boards, sliding on his butt to beat Price. Amazing.
With honorable mentions to game 5 of the 09 Rangers series (Ovechkin’s goal) & Backstrom this past season vs Tampa and his insane shot blocking on the PK.
How about Mike Knuble’s one-man penalty kill? That was pretty awesome.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Lars vs Tampa and Knuble vs Columbus – both times a single player given a standing “O” for a Penalty Kill.

Those are two of the best penalty killing efforts I have ever seen. I was right above where Knuble was at during his – it was incredible.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Most Memorable
1) My first NHL game, ‘85 @ MSG Rangers vs. Flyers. I Wore my Grandpa’s Ron Duguay Jersey; When Sandstrom pocketed the loose change from a Greshner slapper, I jumped into the arms of the president of Yale, and kissed him on the forehead to the horror of my aunt. After the game I got a slew of autographs, including GMGM.
2) The double hat-trick game. “Can you ask them to stop throwing hats?” Watched the 2nd period from a table in the Acela Club, and made $200 off my Pittsburgh loving thesis advisor. Far and away the best—and most satisfying—game I’ve ever attended.
3) the 10-2 drubbing of Boston in ‘08. I’d won tickets off Precap and was busy: on phone, cutting veggies for the next day’s lunch, admonishing the dogs for something, and the Fedex guy knocked. I turned to tell the dogs to back up and sliced off the tip of my thumb. From the hospital I emailed Vogs and Stretch that I’d be late and heavily bandaged—they really hate no-shows on ticket giveaways. I got there just before Ovi scored his first, double Hi-5’d my buddy and my thumb exploded, splattering blood on a whole bunch of people, including the hair of a woman 2 rows down. Memorable. :-D

Oh my.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Wow. You really know how to have a “memorable” game!

1) see above as to the delay in response.
2) It’s more a case of, “even a blind squirrel…” than anything else. Most nights the excitement is limited to another humdrum performance by Ovi, Slick, Greenie, Jizz I mean-ah-Semin, Mr. Nasty, and Prof. Bradley." Really, considering what they have out there it’s a wonder I can keep my eyes open for 2.5 hrs let alone remember the games. :-P

BU vs Miami for the national championship
Took the bus down from Boston for the game, had about 10 people staying at my house. After watching a team for the entire year on the level you get to watch a college team (every single game, road trips to Maine, Denver, Vermont) and on the level you feel connected to a college team since you go to the same school having that kind of a finish is something that could only ever be topped if the Caps fall behind 4-1 in the last minute of a game 7 and score three goals to tie it up.
Go USA, Braves, BU Terriers, Irish, Caps, Colts, Hoyas, NU Cats, Wizards, DC United, Washington Freedom
BU Hockey: National Champions 1971, 1972, 1978, 1995, 2009
But I’d probably feel about the same if the Caps came back from a two goal deficit to tie things up in the last minute of Game 7.
Rocking the Red since 1975
I’ve though about this before… close, maybe… although I doubt I’d ever be able to afford Game 7 Stanley Cup tickets so I probably wouldn’t be there.
I just think I feel stronger about the teams that I root for college wise.. because you get to go to every game and such.

My most memorable game was on April,9 1983. It was the 1st home playoff game in Caps history (and the source of my avatar). After going through the lean years. It felt like they had won the Cup just to be there. I was so proud of them.
I caught a puck deflected off of a Bobby Gould slapshot and, even after the loss, he was nice enough to sign it for me.
Also, the vendors never asked me for ID (17 at the time). Crown and Coke FTW!
Sure, they lost the game and the series, but it was still great because I knew how big a step that game was even at the time.
The “Corey Hircsh Effect” Game which started in March of ’01, when Corey Hirsch entered the game for the Washington Capitals in the third period. The Caps were down 5-2 at the time and all hope was lost. that was until the Effect kicked in. Hirsch came in and shut the door on the Senators. Stopping all 8 shots he faced. Andrei Nikolishin, Trent Whitfield, and Adam Oates all scored to level the score, while Steve Konowalchuk scored the game winner with 1:28 left in the game. He never played another game for the Caps.
I remember being in the stands and saying….“Ohh they pulled Olie..wait who the hell is that?”
Zac
yes..I too have a Caps blog...

Recently the most memorable was home opener this last season. Good game, got sloppy at the end but a bunch of break away goals and AO goal was awesome. But more importantly as I got back to my friends with the beers, being my turn for them, my friend turns to me and says “Wait who’s that on your jersey” Before I could answer Brooks Laich goes off to the races to score.
“That’s who’s on my jersey!”
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.

The game where Sasha slapped down Staal is a personal favorite of mine.

Season before last – Sharks vs Ducks Game 5 – game went to OT and we won. Was the greatest feeling ever (since it was an elimination game for us). Of course, that feeling was dashed with Game 6. But … (sighs)
Also – Opening home game last season .. I wasn’t sure at the time how I felt about Heatley. With the drama surrounding him, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to open my arms to him. But he made such a good first impression – hat trick – I couldn’t help but swoon.
Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality?

The single most memorable game for me — actually causing me to recall it whenever the circumstances are repeated — is the Easter Morning game, Game 7 of the 1987 playoffs against the Islanders. No goalie before or since has made as many saves in a playoff game as Kelly Hrudey did in that one (73) for New York, and every time I hear a puck hit a post, the first image coming to mind is Pat Lafontaine banging one off the post and behind Bob Mason at 2:30 in the morning to win it for the Islanders.
After that, in no particular order…
The comeback against Ottawa when Corey Hirsch played what sholuld have been 20 minutes of mop-up duty and got the win when he stopped all eight shots he faced, and the Caps scored four in the third to win it.
The four-overtime loss to the Penguins that featured an overtime penalty shot for the Caps (a miss…naturally, because of bad ice) and a game-winner that was so soft it made Boyd Gordon seem like Al MacInnis (except it went through about 16 bodies on its way to the net).
Alex Ovechkin’s first game, first shift, when he planted a Columbus defenseman through the glass, then scored two goals.
Michigan State-Minnesota WCHA playoffs, one of the few times any team would be favored over a Herb Brooks-coached team. Two game, most goals format, the teams were tied after Game 1, then they were tied 6-6 after regulation of the second game. Along the way, MSU’s goalie took a puck to the throat, and still did not come out. Game went to three overtimes, and in the third Minnesota completed the upset, 7-6.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Late last night I was rewatching highlights of the 4-OT loss to the Pens and I was reminded that we almost had among our ranks of OT playoff heroes, the unlikeliest of players: Stefan Ustorf.

Late in the 90/91 season I went to a pretty special game at the old Capital Center where the flyers were in town and there were about 300 penalty minutes. There were so many fights it took an extra 45 minutes to an hour to complete the game. The fights were so bad that the fans were getting into with Rick Tocchet who was scratched for the game and in the press box. That was a fairly memorable game. I was 15 at the time and made my parents wait because the game took so long. What more can you say about John Kordic, 7 games in a Caps sweater and racked up 101 PIMs. I miss the good old bench clearing brawls.
Right before Christmas, 1984, I was fortunate to see back to back games in Quebec and Montreal on my first multi-game “roadie”. These Caps…Stevens and Langway and Murphy…Gartner and Carpenter each with 50G…had been on a bonafide tear in the first half of that season. So it didn’t take much convincing from my (new) stepfather, with whom hockey was a significant shared interest, to make the 14 hour drive up to Quebec City, and then hit the Forum on the way back. Pat Riggin was out of his mind; we drummed the Nordiques and even pulled a point out of the Forum, which was a rarity in those days. It was full of awesome.
is it cold yet?
