I know there’ve been a couple Ovie biographies written already. Is there anything different about this one?
A Capital Wasteland - art & hockey from Washington, D.C.
Don’t know – haven’t read others. But this one is likely more current, at the very least (covering through June’s NHL Awards).

Call me crazy, but i really dont have any interest in reading an ov biography, whether it be of the fawning/suck up authorized version or the unauthorized kitty kelly-ish hatchet job version. seems like there have been many great articles writted about ov and his parents and upbringing to get a good understanding of where he’s from and what motivates him. besides, the guy is not yet 25 so might be a bit early for a biography. kind of like when a band puts out a greatest hits album when they’ve only been together for a few years.
but from listening to the damien cox interviews on JRR (nice job guys), it sounds pretty clear that the angle was about ov the brooding meanie who beats up paparazzi and is mean to nice canadian boys like max talbott. hey, a guy’s gotta sell books and i guess painting ov as the “dangerous” villian will sell well in canada. i think it was telling when cox said that because he had no authorized access to ov, he didnt “owe anything” to anyone…such as the truth perhaps?
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
OV has fans in Canada—alot of them. Not everyone here is an unabashed Sidney Crosby fan. OV has his fans (even part time xenophobe Don Cherry likes how OV plays the game alot of the time). Ov has his detractors also. Sid has his fans. Sid has his detractors also (even Canadian jingoist Don Cherry has criticized Sid at times).
People who want to read an unauthorized hatchet job on OV will read and buy one regardless of whether they are Canadian, American. Russian or Macedonian etc

I guess Brian Pothier is headed to Switzerland after all. His sign-with-an-nhl-team-or-else deadline expired yesterday.
Au revoir, Potsy.

Would have liked to see him land an NHL job, but I have to say there are a lot worse places to spend a winter than Switzerland (i.e. Russia). And that’s especially true if you’re making a good living doing it. If the way he embraced Virginia is any indication, he and his family are going to have a great time over there.
I agree with this. There’s always the possibility that he was offered an NHL contract for the minimum and turned it down because he could make more in Europe, and it’s not a bad way to spend a year. I’m just theorizing here, I really have no idea. He’s lucky, at least, because the contract the Caps signed him to four years ago should have given him decent financial security.

I was also hoping that he would get a good NHL deal, but I wish him the best in Switzerland. My friends loved living there.
He was another class act and will be missed.

I think I’m rooting for MP because I like watching him play more than I think he’s the right fit for the line. I wonder whether you really need a true 2C for Semin… he seems to get the puck, rush it and fire it from 60’ out. That’s why Backstrom always seems wasted on him when they skate together.
I’d have to think that Semin needs a primarily defensive center, a guy whose job it is to cover his butt if he loses the puck.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I think Semin needs a humble center — someone who will adjust his game to Semin’s (because Semin ain’t ajusting his to nobody — someone who will (as gs said) play a defensively responsible game — someone who knows his main job is to get the puck on Semin’s stick

what about Backstrom? He’s a humble center, and Semin respects him. Semin enjoys playing with Backstrom.
Backstrom is perfect. But it doesn’t take someone with that much talent, necessarily.

Hard to leave Roy off – greatest goalie of all time, and all that, even if he did win two of his reputation-cementing cups with the Nords, er, Avs.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
That was my primary reason. Maybe they could have split one face and made it “Roy-bin-son”.
Choking since 1985.
I stand my choice of Doug Harvey.
From Legends of Hockey
Harvey proved to be an exceptionally talented and versatile player for the Habs. He quarterbacked the power play, set the tempo for the transitional game and the counterattack, defended tenaciously, blocked shots and intimidated the opposition by merely stepping on the ice. As much as any skater before or since, he was the complete player who meant everything to his team.
Beginning in 1951-52, he was selected to the NHL All-Star Team 11 consecutive years, 10 of them on the First Team. He also had a stranglehold on the Norris Trophy, winning it seven times in eight years from 1955 to 1962. His play was a vital component of Montreal’s Stanley Cup win in 1953 and the NHL record five straight from 1956 to 1960.
Following the retirement of Maurice Richard in 1960, Harvey took over as the Canadiens’ captain. Unfortunately for Harvey, he was one of the individuals blacklisted by the league because of his involvement with the first attempt to form a players’ association. In fact, his number wasn’t retired by the Canadiens until 1985.

Also puzzling: with all the bloggers out there, they get a guy from Hockeybuzz to write it?

The guy may write for HB, but he couldn’t do any worse than the Blackhawks Puckmore including Toews.

Wow…we’re debating the blogger’s decision to pick over the winningest player ever in terms of SCC. (Not saying I disagree or agree—I don’t know)

For a franchise that has 24 Stanley Cups, how do you think there are four clear-cut choices for Mt. Puckmore enshrinement? You could have a Mt. Puckmore, a Mt. Pucksomemore, a Mt. Puckstillmore, and a Mt. Puckevenmore full of Habs. You could do it be decade from the 1950’s and probably have different sets for each until the mid 1990’s.

Pete Peeters
Hello all. I work in Boston in the same firm as the agent/attorney of Pete Peeters. I sent him the Japers link from a couple of weeks ago with the Happy Birthday wishes to Pete with corresponding confusion about the correct date of said b-day. The agent/attorney forwarded the link to Pete and Pete responded that his b-day is on 8/17 and not the earlier date in August you thought it might be. So I suppose Pete should get his 2nd happy b-day wishes in one month!

Red Line Station takes a look at PDO and the Caps during the regular season last year.
It’s an interesting stat.
His conclusion is basically that the Caps outperformed their true talent level last season, which I generally agree with.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
In terms of team outcomes, this is the expected result (as far as the regular season goes). 121 points, first non-original six team to do it, etc. etc. A lot of it fueled by a 14-game winning streak. No one should expect that — or a 121-point season — to be repeated.
It isn’t unlike Mike Green’s 2009-2010 season on the heels of his 31-goal 2008-2009 season. The earlier season had an eight-game goal scoring streak. You can’t expect a record-setting performance to be the norm, and that’s what influenced that outcome disproportionately. He still had 19 goals in 75 games, hardly slacking off (if you account for the streak). The same is likely to be the Caps’ result this season. 105 points might be seen by some as a step back, but there won’t be a 14-game winning streak this year, either.

I keep seeing stuff online and on Twitter about how the Caps are in the mix for Niemi.
Interesting, but I just don’t see it happening. Has anyone seen anything that would give this legs?
I get that we have cap room, but Niemi is only 26, and I’d assume getting him would mean Neuvirth or Varly would be moved?

Pretty much. The only way I can see the Caps signing Niemi is if that trade they’re supposedly working on a deal includes one of them. Say [HFBoards]Flash and Varly for Regher?[/HFBoards] It also would explain why it’s taking so long to work out—there’s more moving pieces involved than originally expected.
Why would the Caps spend more than three times as much money (based on Niemi’s arbitration award) than they are obligated to pay either of their current goalies, for a goalie who is not demonstrably better than either of those goalies right now and almost certainly not better than this coming spring?

THN's Ken Campbell on the Trapezoid
This is easily one of the dumbest things I’ve read in quite some time.
Money quotes:
Well, we’ve had five full seasons with the trapezoid and while it might have been a concern in the pre-lockout NHL, the game has changed so much and the flow of play has so greatly improved that the league could easily abolish the trapezoid and allow goalies to play the puck with impunity without compromising offensive chances.
Well, Ken, part of the reason that the game has changed so much is that the dump and chase actually works again. This forces defensemen to surrender the blueline more easily, which makes it harder to play the trap effectively. But hey, let’s just go and remove one of the rules that led to the fast, freewheeling game we’re enjoying right now, so we can go back to watching 1-0 games between the Wild and Devils.
And who’s to say it wouldn’t lead to more scoring opportunities? Have you seen the way some of the goalies can pass the puck these days?
Who’s to say? I dunno, Ken, how about my friend Common Sense. The trapezoid only takes away small areas of ice, and those areas are about 200 feet from the opposing net. Goalies like the Marties (Brodeur and Turco) already venture from their nets to gather in pucks and start the breakout, the trapezoid simply takes away pucks in the corners. Thinking that somehow allowing goalies to corral pucks in the corners, 200 feet away from the opposing goal, will allow for more opportunities than allowing forecheckers to get to those pucks, around 35 feet away from the goal is just bewildering logic. It’s the same kind of logic that convinced the league that more area behind the nets would lead to greater scoring. All the trapezoid does is allow teams to dump the puck into the corner.
You want to get rid of a lot of the headshots that have become so controversial without actually instituting a headshot rule?
Fat lot of good this would do Marc Savard, or David Booth, or any number of the guys who got nailed on blindside hits. Moreover, there’s already a rule against slamming defensemen’s heads into the boards from behind – it’s called boarding.
And really, how fair is it to inhibit goaltenders from playing the puck anyway? Knowing how valuable a skill it is, many young goalies have honed the craft of puckhandling and made it an essential part of their skill package. Why should they be penalized for doing so?
It’s fair if the rule is equally applied to both teams. NHL hockey players get paid ridiculous sums to play in a league where the rules are subject to change. I’m not feeling terribly sorry for them. And it’s not as though goalies can’t play the puck anymore, they just can’t play it in certain places on the ice. You might as well ask the rhetorical question, “is it fair to not let Tomas Holmstrom stand inside the crease and interfere with the goalie, or to let Sean Avery wave his stick in Marty Brodeur’s face? After all, they have honed their craft and made annoying goalies an essential part of their skill package.”
And isn’t prohibiting a goalie from playing the puck tantamount to stopping defensemen from blocking shots? The next time you watch a game and wonder why the score is 1-0 in the third period, watch closely how many shots don’t even reach the net because uber-protected players are bravely throwing themselves in front of slapshots.
I gotta be honest, Ken, I’m not a huge fan of the current “pack it in on net and pray it hits someone” strategy, either. If you’ve got a solution, I’m all ears.
Another one I’ve never been able to figure out is why teams are allowed to ice the puck with impunity when killing a penalty. First, you give a team a disadvantage for breaking the rules, then you allow it to break the rules again to mitigate the disadvantage it faced for breaking the rules in the first place.
Now you’re talking. . .
Sound crazy? Well, it’s no more outlandish than establishing a small, defined area in which goaltenders are allowed to play the puck.
Goddamnit, Ken. You’re an idiot.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

He doesn’t know the rules very well, does he. The goalie can play the puck anywhere… except TWO SMALL ZONES. The trapezoid was one of the better rule changes, and I don’t see it disappearing anytime soon.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
Sorry guys, but I gotta disagree. With no more two-line passes and with the re-instituting of the tag up offsides post-lockout, I think forechecks would still be effective if the goalie could play the puck in the corners. We saw in this past olympics that when the goalies were allowed to play the puck wherever, there were some adventures. I wish we could go a year without the trapezoid to really see what kind of effect it would have. If it had a negative effect on play, then I’d be ok with the trapezoid coming back.
A lot of my point was simply that Ken Campbell was incorrectly quoting the rule. It only restricts the goalie from playing the puck in two areas, it does not “establish a small, defined area in which goaltenders are allowed to play the puck”.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
It only restricts the goalie from playing the puck in two areas, it does not "establish a small, defined area in which goaltenders are allowed to play the puck".
Yeah, it does create a small, defined area in which goaltenders are allowed to play the puck – the entire rest of the ice.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I wish we could go a year without the trapezoid to really see what kind of effect it would have. If it had a negative effect on play, then I’d be ok with the trapezoid coming back.
Then why not simply experiment down at the AHL level, like they’ve done with past rule changes?
I agree that with the multiple rule changes, it’s hard to determine exact causal relationships. However, I’ll point out that the neutral-zone trap originated in Sweden, where there was no two-line pass, and the trap is still effective against teams who try to pass or carry the puck through it.
Tag-up offsides has helped the flow of the game, but it hasn’t helped the dump and chase as much as the goaltenders not playing the puck.
Other than the trapezoid, the “change” that I think had the most effect was simply enforcing the interference/obstruction rule on defensemen who tried to hold up forecheckers.
I feel like opponents of the trapezoid argue out of both sides of their mouth – on the one hand, it’s a huge handicap to goalies that negates skill, and on the other, it’s had no discernible positive impact on scoring.
Which one is it? Because it’s damn hard to think how you might handicap goalies while having no positive impact on scoring. If that were the case, there isn’t a coach alive who would ever let his goalie leave the crease to play the puck.
there were some adventures
After spending 1998-2004 watching some of the most boring hockey in history, I’m not willing to get rid of an effective rule change just for the sake of “some adventures.” Adventures might create a chance or two every other game. Consistent forechecking pressure creates a ton of chances every single game.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
