Friday Caps Clips
Your savory breakfast links:
- Be sure to check out tomorrow morning's absolutely loaded edition of Japers' Rink Radio, when Pepper and Russell welcome Damien Cox and Smokin' Al Koken to the show.
- Looks like former Cap Eric Belanger is also future Cap Eric Belanger and very soon to be current Cap Eric Belanger. [CI]
- Is Mike Knuble getting better with age? [RMNB]
- Taking a swig of the "Mathieu Perreault as second-line center" Kool-Aid. [RtR]
- More on the changes to the Caps beat at the WaPo (and still more in last week's edition of JRR). [CI]
- If we're putting suits on Mt. Capsmore, Ted Leonsis is certainly deserving... but so to would be David Poile. Maybe a Mt. Suitmore is in order. [OFB]
- Michal Neuvirth plays for "Team Jagr." Blech. [FanShot]
- The Eastern Conference sure has gotten tough this summer. Literally. [NESN]
- Speaking of pugilism, remembering John Kordic. [Capitals Outsider]
- A look at the Florida Panthers. [Masisak (read it and show CSN that folks care about hockey, even in August)]
- Snap Shots: Cody Eakin. [Caps365 (video)]
- "The Russian Factor" is a non-factor for Stan Galiev. [The Hockey Writers]
- Speaking of "The Russian Factor," a great read on the "NHL's exodus from Europe." [HabsWatch]
- Finally, today's your last day to snag $20 of food and drink at Tony and Joe's for just $10. [SB Nation Team Pick]

What does it say about David Poile’s ability that he will almost certainly be on one Puckmore and could’ve been considered for a second? Love him or hate him, dude’s a helluva GM.
On the Forecheck: preaching the Predators' gospel to the unwashed masses.
He’d also be on “Just for Men’s” Mt. Dyemore.

Jeff Rimer should definitely be on Mount Dyemore. And Marv Albert, although I think he just had a weave.

Who do we want on Mt. Diemore?
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.

Every other league known for producing NHL calibre talent; Russia, Finland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia all experienced massive reductions. Even the collective of smaller leagues which the NHL used to draft from; Switzerland, Germany, Latvia, Slovenia, Belarus etc, also saw a heavy decline in the post lockout era.
Surprising read. Thanks.

Another interesting part of that analysis was the huge rise in USA draft picks, somewhat off-set by the decline in NCAA picks. I know this means that they’re drafting more at the local club/high school level, but considering the size of the US population, that’s a lot of groundwork for US scouts to cover.

Not drinkin’ it. And judging from this Belly re-sign, neither is the team.

You think Belanger is going to be the second line center?
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
Come April probably not. Maybe the thinking is to let Makkan spend 25ish games getting used to North American rinks and see if he’s ready for a larger workload around December.
Hasta siempre Jaime.

That’s my thinking – Belly starts at 2C, but can easily shift in and out of 3C as Perreault or Johansson asserts himself.
But if the Caps enter April with Eric Belanger as their 2C, they’re in deep doo doo.

Corey's content
For those not on the Twitters, Corey “will be writing something #Caps related for @csnwashington every weekday until camp.” Today “will start a once-a-week look at the #Caps organizational depth chart.”
Hasta siempre Jaime.
perhaps you missed corey’s tweet from a few days ago:
@cmasisak22 In the past 7 days I have played 99 holes of golf and bought 6 pairs of shoes. I’m almost ready for the LPGA Tour.
great to see him back on the beat..

I enjoy his work, but his “Caps in the Cupboard” piece on goaltenders has a MASSIVE omission.
The Caps don’t have the deepest system for young goalies – I think Los Angeles has us beaten hands down.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Why? Quick and Bernier > Varly, Neuvy, Holtby? I’ll take 3 over 2.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
The consensus has been that Quick and Bernier are a skosh better, and they’ve also got Ersberg who, while not “young” is still relatively cheap and effective.
They’ve also got about 5 more guys in juniors and NCAA.
Like I said, the Caps are a close second. I’d just give the nod to LA.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...

I have five, and I’m having a hell of a time cutting any of them: Pollin, Poile, Patrick, Leonsis and McPhee.

I’d cut GMGM. Jury’s still out on him, IMO. Granted, Poile didn’t win anything either, but he made the Langway trade (to save the franchise) and the Ridley/Miller trade (epic win), along with drafting a ton of post-first-round gems: Pivonka, Khristich, Klee, Bondra, Dafoe, Kono, Brunette, Zednik among them.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Now that Corey’s writing daily stories about hockey and the Caps, CSN needs to reset its Caps content feed to the Rink/SBNation. They’ve had the same five headlines for nearly two months.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Probably something on our end. Let me look into it.

From today's Down Goes Brown this made me laugh
Vesa Toskala
The bad: Often reminds you of the love child of Hardy Astrom and Andre Racicot, assuming that child was forced to play goal before developing gross motor skills.

The best
Kyle Wellwood
The bad: Has occasionally experienced minor conditioning setbacks, which some bloggers have cruelly exaggerated to get cheap laughs.
The good: Is an extremely well-rounded player. Often appears to be everywhere on the ice at the same time. Has an overwhelming presence which can dominate the dressing room. Is unanimously considered to be one of the hungriest players in the league.
Where he’d fit: Any roster with a large hole to fill.

Regarding the link within the Capitals Outsider article
Long time lurker but really enjoy the content here. I’ve always been a CI guy, but over the last year it’s become, well you know. Anyway- I was just wondering if anyone read The Lost Boy article within the CO link? I’m sure most of you have but if not, it’s well worth the 5-10 minutes to check it out.

Scary
The bus that Nick Backstrom’s “Icebreakers” team was on was involved in an accident today, striking another car.
Nick was not on the bus, however. He was playing golf with Foppa.
None of the players on the bus were injured, though they had a long hot walk to the arena. The lady in the car that was hit by the bus was hurt pretty bad.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I wish her a speedy recovery.
On another note, lucky Nicky for getting to hang out with Foppa so much.

How did PF’s skating look?
"Those things happen in sport," McPhee said. "It's not like it's anything chronic."
It looked pretty good actually and for a charity game the game was played at a high tempo. And there were legit hits in the game you don’t often see that in a charity game in August. It’ probably a long shot that he will be able to play though it’s the same old story he can’t get a skate that works with his bad foot. You can hear that he’s sick and tiered to talk about it. When he got to talk about his favorite Premier League club the Tottenham Hotspurs he was happy as a kid on Christmas though.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.
thanks…I was reading this later on and it doesn’t sound so good on a return. Best to him, though.
