Thursday Caps Clips
Your savory breakfast links:
- Experience: you usually need it to get it and can't often get it without it. And the Caps' D as presently constituted doesn't have it. [Peerless]
- I've long waited for the day I'd read an interview with Alexander Semin in which he was translated as having said, "Yes, she sculpts my dumplings." [kp.ur via Google Translate, with a much better translation over at Alex Ovetjkin]
- The stats say Chris Bourque, Alexandre Giroux and Keith Aucoin should be pretty decent NHLers. This concludes today's edition of "Why You Shouldn't Rely On Stats Alone In Formulating Your Opinions." [RMNB]
- Sasha vs. Sasha: click through for the outstanding lead image, stay for the analysis. [Jumping the Glass]
- The Prince of Wales engraving error hoax? Not so much a hoax. [Puck Daddy]
- Eric Belanger has reportedly signed with someone, but he's
too embarrassedwaiting to announce who the lucky team is. [PHT] - Take note: a sports radio station talking pucks (with Steve Kolbe) in August with the you-know-who's opening their preseason in two days. [Lavar and Dukes]
- An overview of the Caps' off-season. [TFP]
- The Caps' second-line center spot, at least in the short-term, would seem likely to be filled by an asset already in the organization... but I certainly wouldn't pencil in Mathieu Perreault for it quite yet. [OFB]
- What about Marcus Johansson for that gig? [Rink Rebel]
- (You all know my bet for opening night 2C rhymes with Flomas Teischmann.)
- Eric Fehr will be playing some puck for a good cause tonight. Why do I worry that he's going to hurt himself every time he steps on the ice? [Winnipeg Sun]
- Ovechkinception. [YouTube]
- NHL stars like Mike Green and Alex Ovechkin... in video games, I think. [FanShot]
- Speaking of Ovechkin, Damien Cox and Gare Joyce's book on AO hits Canadian bookshelves on September 20 (but you can order yours online here). More importantly, Cox joins Japers' Rink Radio on Saturday to discuss the book and other topics.
- Cody Eakin is ready to play some puck. [Prairie Post]
- Could the Bears and Baby Pens play a January 1 game at CONSOL in conjunction with the Winter Classic? [PensBlog]
- Bryan Helmer on concussions. [The Voice of Sport]
- Sweet coupon alert - $20 of food and drink at Tony and Joe's for just $10. [SB Nation Team Pick]

I did indeed. They’ve got my love and attention for that alone.

I was ridiculously excited to hear Steve Kolbe’s voice when I got in my car yesterday.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins have a deal in place to play a regular season game at the Consol Energy Center on New Year’s Day.
There’s no way that their opponent is anyone else but the Hershey Bears, their most hated rivals.
That’s basically it.

Cause and effect?
The peerless article on D experience doesn’t convince me that the number of games played by defenseman was a critical factor. I’m not saying it isn’t, just that the stats are not convincing of the need for more D experience.. I’m curious how the caps stack up against all teams, not just winners. How many teams in the NHL actually try to play a season with such little D experience? How many teams with the high numbers of games that the champs had totally flopped in the regular season?
by vzotsky on Aug 12, 2010 9:07 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Correlation does not imply causation
But if Dman experience is somehow indicative that your blueline is ready to win a Cup, I’m all for it.
How many teams in the NHL actually try to play a season with such little D experience? How many teams with the high numbers of games that the champs had totally flopped in the regular season?
Even if 1/30 of the teams with enough experience win it all, zero without enough win, so I’d go for some chance as opposed to none.

He wasn’t good in Pittsburgh. Generally if you block a lot of shots then you’re playing in your own end too much. That’s pretty much McKee’s game.

He didn’t stand out to me on screen, and he was considered a disappointment on Pensburgh (whose community’s assessment I trust).
McKee was blocking the most shots per 60, but faced low Corsi QualComp. That’s different from say Volchenkov who faces top notch competition.

We only need him to be a 6/7/8..
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
I don’t think it’s impossible to build a 1-6 of top-4s when you have four guys in RFA years. I also don’t want the team to have to rely basically on the top 4 and no one else, especially on the road when the other team can get their top line against the third line.
Basically, McKee doesn’t look competent enough for me to want him. The Caps play D by attacking, and McKee doesn’t fit.

Yeah, you don’t want McKee.
He was pretty good the first half of the year but then he got hurt and was really bad. I dreaded anytime he was skating backwards. All you have to do is chip the puck behind him and by the time he turned to retrieve it the other guy was by him.
And McKee’s puck handling skills were about on par with what I imagine my grenade handling skills would be: a sloppy hurry to get rid of it as soon as possible. (With pants shitting)
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
The most powerful argument in that post, in my mind is that in the last ten seasons, no Stanley Cup winner had a defensive corps in the playoffs that started the season with fewer than 2,000 combined regular season games of experience (only one had fewer than 2,500). The Caps sit at 1,813 (I didn’t do the playoff experience level, but given that five of the defensemen have played their entire NHL careers with the Caps — and the Caps have advanced past the first round only once since dinosaurs roamed the earth — I would hazard a guess that the gap between the Caps’ playoff experience and that of the other ten teams depicted there is even more stark). Does that mean the Caps won’t win a title? No. There are too many moving parts in a hockey team to make that emphatic a statement. But the defense, whatever you think of its skill level, is still green in terms of playoff readiness.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Right but my question would be, in the past 10 years, how many NHL teams have started the season with less than 2000 games played amongst their defensive corps, regardless of playoff success?
by vzotsky on Aug 12, 2010 10:49 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
That would take time to compile (we’re talking more than 250 teams), but I would guess that quite a few did. But that calculation becomes a bit more complicated in that you’re dealing with more teams that used a lot more defensemen, too. Just picking one at random, the 2000-2001 Blue Jackets — a team that finished 13th in their conference — dressed 12 defensemen that season.
If you've read this far...seek help.
by ThePeerless on Aug 12, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Oh I definitely understand not being able to compile that much data and don’t fault anyone for not doing it, but I do think it’s what’s required to draw that conclusion on a statistical basis. As JP suggested, there are certainly other ways to draw that conclusion

While he’s far from a big name or impact player, Eric Belanger is still one of the better centers remaining on the free agent market. Sources say that he’s chosen the team he’ll sign a one-year contract with..
If Belanger could have been had for a one-year deal, it should have been with the Caps. I’m still trying to figure out what McPhee is doing with the center positions on this team. Heading into the season with Flash and Mackan/MP as your second and third line centers is preposterous for a team with Cup aspirations.
I have to think McPhee is keeping an eye on some personnel who might be shaken loose later in the summer or nearer to opening night as a few clubs struggle to get under the cap.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I hope you’re right because heading into the season with Flash/Mackan/MP as your #2 & 3 centers and Sloan and Erskine as your 6/7 defensemen is insane. Especially when you’ve got almost $6 million in cap room.
I’d rather them go in like that then spend money on the wrong guy just because..

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/globe-on-hockey/belanger-to-sign-with-capitals/article1670370/
if this is true, this bit of news makes me happy on several levels. I wanted the team to keep Belanger, he’s a good 3rd line center, and a one year deal works for the team. Trading Flash makes me very happy, and trading him for a d-men makes me even happier. Anyone to replace Sloan/Erskine as the #6 is an improvment.
