For those following, the Capitals logo has made it into Icethetics’ final against Vancouver.

Wow, I never put it together that their logo back then was a skate. Mind blown.

Slightly OT – I used to love the late 70s early 80s baseball logos. And the most garish uniforms known to man. The orange and blue of the Houston Astros. The yellow and brown San Diego Padres jerseys. Or the yellow and black Pittsburgh Pirates uniforms with the round black caps, or as I called them Kent Tekulve hats.

That logo blew my mind, too. Here’s another: The Sabres slug logo is a stylized B.

Harold Snepsts… he used to get into it with Mario Marois of the New York Rangers when they played each other in the late 1970s… One game, Mario scored a goal for the Rangers, and then skated by the Vancouver bench, where he tossed the puck to Snepsts after scoring it. Needless to say this did not go unnoticed, and the next time Snepsts was on the ice with Mario, he dropped the gloves and went at him. It actually worked out for the Rangers as they were able to score with Snepsts in the box. I don’t think Snepsts got tossed from the game, but eventually Ranger enforcer Nick Fotiu told him to end it. He also, quietly skated over to Mario and told him to end it as well…

JP, I call my blog Red Line Station. You listed my name instead. Sorry to be nitpicky.
I was looking through SI’s gallery of the biggest deals in NHL history. First, they say Redden’s deal isn’t the worst the Rangers did, and since Gomez appears later, I guess they’re saying his deal is the worst (but as KNtaD will tell you, Gomez is still a good player because he cancels tough competition and drives Corsi). I think Redden’s is worse.
Then they leave out Backstrom.

Color me unimpressed.
The final no-brainer move Washington appears poised to make this fall is with the promotion of Mathieu Perreault to fill a major hole.
Even guys who have spent much of their career in the NHL haven’t been able to center a second line, and there is no proof yet that Matty can either.
So if we don’t know if Perreault can fill the major hole, how is this a no-brainer move?
Some guys who bear relatively modest numbers in hockey’s second-best league make the jump and just catch lightning in the proverbial bottle. They play bigger in the big league than numbers alone would seem to indicate they should. That sure seems like what happened in 2009-10 with Matty.
If Perreault’s 9 points in 21 NHL games really was “bigger than his AHL numbers would seem to indicate” that Perreault should be able to do at the NHL level, then there’s no way he should even be sniffing the 2C. 9 in 21 projects out to 34 points. I don’t think we’d be very happy with a 34 point second line center. I’d like my 2C to be doing at least better than a point every two games. (Of course, Perreault’s AHL numbers actually suggest he may have more upside — Perreault had 50 points in 56 regular season games with Hershey, and more importantly, 19 points in 21 playoff games.)
Perreault might be the answer, he might not. But at least look at his actual stats before crowning him a no-brainer.

The “SuperStar Summer Showdown on Saturday night” – holy alliteration, Batman!
At first I was worried that this was some sort of MMA thing, since Ferhsie’s into that. But then I found this:
The Believe in the Goal Foundation Inc. was established by Todd Davison in 2006. While fighting his own personal battle with a rare form of cancer, Todd started Believe to raise funds to help young local cancer victims. The inaugural SuperStar Summer Showdown game featuring many of Todd’s hockey community teammates was played in August 2006. As a result of the players’ charity and participation in the annual game, Invitational Golf Tournament and supporting Foundation events, Believe has raised nearly $250,000 to date. The Foundation’s mission is to make a tangible difference in the lives of young kids and adolescents battling through the various stages of cancer via "Comfort and Care" initiatives, events and programs.
Good for Eric (and the rest of the players).
"HISTORY DOESN’T MATTER!!! .... Who cares if it’s never been done? We aren’t those teams who failed before. We are in control of our own destiny, and we will make it happen our own way.." - A Gordon, June 2010
The game is actually tomorrow night. Today they get out their sticks and play a little golf.
Other Caps playing in hockey tourneys this week: Tomas Fleischmann is playing with Jagr, Kaberle, Plekanec, and a bunch of the Czech all-stars today, Nicky/Foppa/Naslund have two more Icebreakers games, and Dmitri Orlov and Geno Kuznetsov are playing for Team Russia in a friendly three-game tournament with France. Dima got a helper in his game yesterday.
I’m hoping I’ll be able to find some pix of Flash’s game. On the plus side, I guess that means he didn’t get another blood clot!

Calle Jarnkrok, Detroit: Jarnkrok had a great game versus the US and had quite a few quality scoring chances. He anticipated the play well and jumped at the puck when he got his chances. He showed quality puck skills and his speed created space for him. Calle sniped a goal past Zane Gothberg from the left circle.

It was a beautiful goal. I watched both games between USA-Småkronorna and he had a great tournament. I will definitely make the trip to Gävle a couple of times this season to watch him play.
Just thinking about what he will be able to do with those hands and that hockey sense when he fills out some more makes me drool. He weights in at 165 lbs (if that) and the way he handled playoff hockey against man while weighting practically nothing..
Sigh.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.

It’s to bad for Omark that he have so many great new players ahead of him on the depth chart in Edmonton; Eberle, Hall, Pääjärvi-Svensson, Giroux…..

Dave Shand...
He was a player I grew up liking when I was a kid about 13 years old. He was just starting out with Atlanta, and remember, when I was growing up, the Atlanta Flames were on TBS both home and away, so I got to see 70 or so Flames games and only 30 Ranger and Islander games on TV (The Rangers and Islanders only televised away games, home games were on pay-per-view cable.) I grew up rooting for the Flames…
Back in the kid days, I wrote him a fan letter which he answered very graciously and included an autographed photo of him and Bobby Lalonde (who also autographed it!). I wish I still had the photo. Alas it was in the Flames home whites, not the fire engine red jerseys, but still it was neat having it when I was 13.
I got to meet him in person when the Phone Booth opened in 1997, and we shook hands. I was then 34 and he was 42. I told him I sent him a fan letter and he asked, concerned, if he had answered. I told him what he had done, and he remarked that that was the first fan letter he had received from someone outside of Georgia, so he remembered it. He was happy to autograph a pennant I had bought at the first game at the arena and we talked about his career. He said he remembered playing in Washington, but that since he was hurt most of the time, he never really got going here. His best years were in Atlanta, of course, and he said the highlight of his career was winning a medal (Bronze) at the World Championships the one year in his career when Atlanta missed the playoffs (The Atlanta Flames would make the playoffs every year, then get bounced in the first round, usually in bizarre ways, including holding LA to 3 goals in 2 games in a 2 out of three, only to get swept by 1-0 and 2-1 scores.)
He ended up being a regular on a sports talk radio station in Wisconsin, I think….

Not a bad point. Honestly it’s a little before my time so I didn’t really know the extent of Howe’s participation in the whole thing – that’s interesting, though. But it’s a tricky situation, because I’d say at least 3 of the 4 he’s got on there are hard to bump. The only iffy one in my mind was Staal, and even that one’s not so iffy if you consider how long he’s been there (7 years already, time flies!) and the fact that he was instrumental in their first Cup.

This is OT, but I asked this elsewhere and never got a reply. Does anyone know what section in the CBA says how long after a contract is signed the NHL has to be able to reject it? I think it’s 11.6, which says " within sixty (60) days from the date upon which the facts of the Circumvention became known or reasonably should have been known to the NHL", or “within fourteen (14) days from the date upon which the SPC was approved by the NHL.” Is there something I’m missing? Because if that’s what the NHL has to go on, I don’t see how they would challenge any of the older contracts about circumventing the cap.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
according to Wysh’s recent entry, that is correct.
According to the collective bargaining agreement, here’s the skinny on de-registering a standard player contract from Section 11.6 (assuming this is the applicable section):
(b) Subsequent Challenge and/or De-Registration of SPCs.
Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in this Section 11.6, an approved and registered SPC may be subject to subsequent challenge and/or de-registration by the League: (i) in the case of a Circumvention relating to either the Club Upper Limit or the Maximum Player Salary, within sixty (60) days from the date upon which the facts of the Circumvention became known or reasonably should have been known to the NHL, or (ii) in the case of a challenge pursuant to (i) or (ii) below, within fourteen (14) days from the date upon which the SPC was approved by the NHL.
however, there is also this
Boston Bruins: Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli issued a statement Tuesday about Marc Savard’s seven-year contract that was signed in December 2009 and ends with him making $525,000 in each of the last two years of that deal. From the Bruins:
“We are cooperating fully with the League in its investigation of the Marc Savard contract extension. The League informed us upon their registration of the contract on December 1, 2009 that they would be investigating the circumstances surrounding this contract. From that point on, they commenced their investigation and it has been ongoing since then. On August 4th, I met with two League appointed lawyers as part of the investigation. We will continue to cooperate with the League in any future investigative proceedings if necessary and we will have no further comment on the matter at this time.”
Aug. 4, of course, being the start of the Kovalchuk arbitration hearing. How convenient. DJ Bean of WEEI wonders how long the Bruins have known that the Savard deal could be spiked — and if they’d be OK with that occurring.
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

OK – so I did find the right section. I wonder, could the NHL use the date when its’ investigation ends to be the start of the 60 days? If so, they would have standing on some of these. Can any lawyerish types tell me if I’m correct here? I don’t speak legalese.
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I just saw another section that might apply, on a Puck Daddy post. Section 26.10, which says “(d) There shall be no limitation of time barring the investigation of a Circumvention by the Commissioner.” So how does that factor into this?
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
I believe the language is intentionally vague to give the NHL the ability to do whatever they want, in a “may the best lawyer win” approach.
While I believe the NHL was correct to strike down the Kovalchuk deal, I personally think that rejecting contracts months after they were registered and seemingly approved would be wrong, but the language in the CBA appears to allow just that.

So it’s not just me. If I am understanding this properly, the NHL could run an investigation, say the investigation’s finding is that the contract circumvents the cap, and deregister the contract. Would that be correct?
Never underrate the power of the hissy-cow.
The section about investigations into circumvention (all under Article 26) also says the the investigator’s findings “are not binding,” which means the investigation could find that the contracts are circumventing the cap but the league decides not to punish them for other reasons. The findings still would be on record and could be used in the future against other loophole contracts.
Also, the CBA lists other punishments besides voiding the contract, including forfeiting games or draft picks and suspending club officials, agents, or players.
when does savard’s contract go into effect? i’m guessing it starts w/ the 2010-11 season. i would think the nhl would have to rule on it prior to it going into effect. which is a joke because if they void it now, then he becomes a FA. information that i’m sure would have been usefull to the B’s before the draft much less July 1.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Looks like the rumors from yesterday are true, D’Amigo is turning pro. Leafs fans must be beside themselves.

It might be. However, based on what I’ve seen of their roster, he’d probably make their squad. I kid. he was rookie of the year last year in the ECAC and probably felt he could learn more in Kitchener or Toronto (Marlies not Leafs). Plus, he gets to start his contract clock now by signing his ELC.
Speaking of the Leafs isn’t this like day 4010 of ‘the Leafs are going to trade Kaberle’ saga?

In my opinion, I think some teams would actually benefit from these long-term deals being rescinded because of the cap space it will create and by probably having the option of signing the players for less (Boston, Vancouver, Chicago). I would think Hossa, Savard, and Luongo would sign for less to have the option of playing for contending teams.
Remember how Capitals being on Wales Trophy was deemed a hoax? HHOF tells Puck Daddy it wasn’t. Actual engraving error. Post on PD soon.
Just…wow.

what did they do, engrave it back in March?

Seriously, wow. A hoax made a lot of sense.

a hoax makes more sense, but it’s somehow funnier that there was such a stunning screw up.
