Great article on Pinner, although I admit to a bias because I just plain like the kid and I’d like to see him get a shot in Washington. What the article doesn’t say, though, is that he’s the guy in Hershey that other teams absolutely cannot stand. He’s a chirper, an agitator, and he’ll drop ’em if it comes down to that (and is pretty effective at it). I keep remembering articles that mentioned him as a guy that teams in the playoffs were planning for and specifically mentioned as hating his guts.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
You could say he made SDR expendable, but then again, he is a UFA after this year, too. At age 26, if he has a shot in another organization, I would expect he’ll take it.
If you've read this far...seek help.
I think Bruess more than Pinner made Delly expendable. Actually, I think Delly more than anyone made Delly expendable.

Can you tell us whatever it is you heard about him?
Why wouldn't you play Perreault? He's a really talented young player.
I’ve mentioned it a couple of times before – just a general feeling from a couple of (non-org) folks that he’s peaked already and doesn’t have what it takes to make it to the NHL (or maybe even as a successful AHLer). Those are just opinions, of course, and don’t necessarily reflect the organization’s thinking on the kid, but when you look at what they got in return for him (no offense to Mr. D.J.), it lines up.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That seems right, but you also have to think that the Caps are a club that are thinking “now” more than “down the road”, and their personnel choices in free agency are being made accordingly. The main difference between King and Delly is that King can help them now and Delly’s still a couple of years away if he ever makes it.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Agreed, though I think that they probably could have found something similar to King via free agency or other avenues had they not wanted to surrender what they truly believed to be a valuable asset.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
This is true. Certainly they believed King to be of more value than Delly – that’s beyond dispute. It’s hard to say what’s in their minds there beyond the whispers and rumblings.
The other fact is that we have other options in the pipeline. I can’t tell if Bruess will pan out – I missed camp entirely and only went back through the coverage after it was over.I’m hoping Pinner gets a look this year, like I’ve said.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I’m hoping Pinner gets a look this year
For what it’s worth, Tim Leone believes that Pinner is one of the Hershey guys who has a chance of making the Caps this season or at least seeing some playing time. Not sure if he still feels that way after the King acquisition.
(Though I don’t necessarily agree that “[t]he main difference between King and Delly is that King can help them now and Delly’s still a couple of years away…” The main difference is that King is an NHL hockey player, regardless of how much skill he brings to the table. But obviously, the related now-vs.-future aspect was a driving factor.)
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
King’s cost and term probably helped and will make the 4th line a little cheaper in ’11.

I suppose, though I bet there’ll be a ~$600k enforcer or two available next summer. Guess you want King locked up because he soon will know Boudreau’s system. /Sloan’d

I can’t say I listen to much talk radio in general but I will say that, from what I’ve heard, at least Dukes and the Junkies are willing to admit they don’t know jack about hockey and more importantly are pretty willing to learn. Dukes in particular sticks out as someone who has asked questions and seemed sincere in wanting to learn.
Plus he loves Carlson so he knows a little bit ;)
Random aside, Dukes was in my class in high school – as was the producer of the Junkies, Bret Oliverio (or was a year ahead/behind, can’t remember). Trippy.

Kovy fallout for Pronger?
A footnote in the Kovalchuk ruling notes that Pronger’s contract extension – which kicks in next year – is “under review” by the league.
Might the league feel emboldened by the Kovalchuk victory and reject Pronger’s extension? That would probably benefit the Flyers, and get them out from under a 35+ salary cap albatross.
Should note that Puck Daddy originally asked this question.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Luongo’s is apparently under review as well. I wonder if Holmgren and Gillis begged the NHL to review the contracts.

by Killer_Carlson on Aug 10, 2010 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions
And Savard’s,too. I suspect the B’s would be pleased to be out from under that one.
According to a source quoted by Mirtle, once the extension kicks in and the player starts getting paid under it (such as Hossa and Franzen) the league can’t go back and challenge it. There are 2 months before Luongo, Savard and Pronger kick in…
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Here’s the thing (and I’ll admit I’m not following it intensely), retroactively doing this a year after it was signed and sent into the League (whether it’s kicked in or not) says to me either they’re shabby in the contract registrar’s office or they’re just being contentious pricks with the Union, even though both sides haven’t had much of a problem with these contracts for two offseasons now.
It takes...something? Anything?!?
by Bald Pollack on Aug 10, 2010 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with your points, but will note that disorganization and poor decisions have been the hallmarks of League management under Bettman’s stewardship.
But they haven’t been all that prick-ish, in the way the NFL is prick-ish with their labor force. If they take this step, it would be a new development.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Here’s another thing. I’m pretty sure there is a 60 day time limit for the league to contest a contract. They can’t just hold that right perpetually per the CBA.

Hull is OK with me. I can understand Toews, captain of the Cup-winning team and all…the Wirtzes are a ridiculous pick.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I think they could have combined the two into one – because it’s hard to deny that Bill Wirtz was responsible for much of the success and then much of the failure of the franchise, and it’s hard to deny that Rocky was responsible for kind of a new era. I buy them as one, but two separate spaces for them with an original 6 franchise…eh.
Papa Wirtz for sure. Unless he’s talking about the two sons. Papa was terrible, terrible for that team. I grew up in Chicago area as a BH fan…it was a nightmare. No televised home games because Bill Wirtz thought people would stay home and not attend the games. Jerk.

Keystone, South Dakota – August 10, 2010
The head of the National Parks Service, Sam Fels, age 21, of Chicago, announced today that Mt. Rushmore will be closed indefinitely while the faces of Thomas Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt are replaced with those of Ronald Reagan and Barack Obama.
“Who even remembers those old guys anymore,” Fels said. “We just feel the monument could use a revitalization. Washington can stay because he was the first, and Lincoln freed the slaves or something, but what did Jefferson or Roosevelt ever do? At least there are people today who remember Reagan. And besides, Reagan won a war — the Cold War. What other president can say that?”
When asked if putting the sitting president on the monument is premature, Fels said “We think it will increase interest in the site. And besides, if he can win a Nobel Peace Prize so soon…”

I was thinking something similar about this for who I’d include for the Penguins.
Rick Kehoe has more points than any Penguins not named Lemieux or Jagr, and is 4th all time in games played. On top of that, he spent 16 years with the franchise as an assistant or head coach.
