Kuznetsov and Orlov at camp…very nice.

I guess as storylines go, we ought to be looking for MarJo to dominate, being as we hope he’s filling an NHL gig full time this year?
I’m hoping to see good things out of Orlov, and hoping for no red flags from Kuznetsov or Galiev.

If he is going to legitimately vie for a spot on the NHL roster, yes he does.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Finley gets some props for coming back from a ruptured artery in his hand. That sounds incredibly unpleasant.
That does sound like an especially tough injury.
I’m admittedly biased against certain WCHA teams, but I never thought much of him at NoDak. There were positive reports from the Caps organization this past year before he got hurt, about improvement on his skating and stick work. But I don’t trust those reports being that they toyed with the idea of moving him to forward but then changed back. They had planned on having him in SC at 22 before the injury.
If he couldn’t crack Hershey as a 20-something guy right out of the gate, I’m skeptical he’ll make it this year, really.
What a crap draft pick.

It puzzles me. Admittedly when they made the pick I was only finding my way to the Caps, but I can remember thinking he’s not even a top player in the state. Niskanen and Brian Lee were better defensemen….
Also he’s crazy, the on ice shenanigans can be funny from a distance (hitting Bucky Badger) but do you really want a guy on your team pulling someone out of a handshake line?
GMGM was completely infatuated with size at that point in his career. You look who he was drafting with his high picks and he was trying to build a behemoth of a team. Oops.

As usual, no info. on the FA invites. At this time, we know of 4 including 1 goalie, 2D, and 1 forward.
The only draft picks (that the Caps have not officially announced they let go the rights to or has not been announced elsewhere) not on the list are Godfrey (under contract), Glass, and Larson.
Not clear to me whether Caps have let go of Larson’s rights or not.
Godfrey at this point not a surprise he’s not attending dev. camp whether simply not invited due to performance to date or due to the injury at the end of last season or both, plus he’s already attended several camps.
Glass has attended in the past and could have a conflict and/or injury. He’s an NCAA player so also in the pay your own way category.
Godfrey’s done, as far as the NHL goes, right?
Kinda surprised they’re giving Finley a bite at the apple, to tell you the truth.

I don’t think either is likely to make the NHL, but I’d have to say Godfrey is more likely just because he can skate and play with the puck. If he ever learns to play in his own end he might have a future, I just don’t see it at this point.

Only Mackan has a chance, in all likelihood. I really hope he’s that good but will temper expectations.
How many are even eligible? Eakin, Mitchell, Flemming, Staz, Grubauer, Carrier are all due back in junior.
I can’t pretend to know about the high school/college kids but I presume they’re due back to their teams as well. So that’s Wey, Dunn, Herbert, Burke, and DeSimone.
Orlov and Kuznetsov are question marks with their enigmatic Russian kontrakts, but I’m taking a WAG that Kuznetsov will definitely go back to Traktor but the Caps may attempt to buy pry Orlov out of Metallurg and put him in Hershey.
Delly should be headed for Hershey, but he and the Kuger may get to spend some time in South Carolina if their conditioning/speed need work. AnGus probably falls in this category as well.
The rest of the crew (minus Mackan) are mostly getting courtesy looks and will return to HER/SCS for the coming season. Holtby will of course return to HER as the definitive #1 goalie.
Any of the CHL kids can go to the NHL if they are good enough. But they won’t be.

Herbert is going to the USHL for the upcoming season, and then at least 1 year at Duluth. I assume he was drafted knowing that if he pans out, it’s not going to be for 3-4 years.

I’d be shocked if he doesn’t spend 3 full at Duluth. He’ll have to progress mighty fast to do that.

Yeah, I would guess 3 at Duluth as well (seems like few guys come out of there early, although god knows its not because the city of Duluth is exciting). 3 years before he’s in the Caps system is probably optimistic, 4-5 is realistic.

Herbert is skilled as all crap, but has no defensive game, and is small. He’ll do a year in the USHL before he can even handle the WCHA. If he would have shot up like Bjugstad he might have been a first round pick. Offensively he has natural instincts and can finish. If he physically grows he might arrive earlier, otherwise it looks like 3, more likely 4 years as a bulldog.
Dunn is very interesting, he got more time in net with Lee playing in the WJC and was third team WCHA goalie and made the most of his time. But then Lee came back and got the Huskies their first NCAA win. There might be more of a rotation in St. Cloud, but it’s clear that Lee is the starter. I have no idea if the caps have a history of trying to pull guys out of college, but it might be worth a shot if he impresses. He won’t get the time he needs to polish his game at MSU.
Thanks for the comments on Herbert. As you are probably one of only a few, if not the only one posting here (other than the WCHA blogger), who has seen him play pre-development camp.
FYI, for those that don’t know, specifically Herbert is expected to play for Sioux City in the USHL (just noting that since it hasn’t been reported much.)
I know you meant SCSU for the Dunn convo, just a typo since you also wrote St Cloud. I think most expected Lee, even in his freshman season, to get the majority of the starts, however, Dunn got a lot more playing time than expected even without the WJC time when Lee was gone. With the college schedule, I think it could play out similar to last season with the splits and I don’t think there’s a logical place for Dunn in the system right now if he left college this summer. He went back to SCSU last year having no idea how things would play out. Plus for Dunn, the college degree is of value, IMO.
I wonder how Wey and the other NCAA guys are getting here and paying for their stay. Does anyone remember how many NCAA guys have attended in the past?

I’ll give you a dollar if you shout “Oy, Wey!” every time he skates past.

Such good nickname potential.
“Curds N” Wey
“They Went Thatta” Wey
“No Frickin’” Wey
“Anchors A” Wey
But I like “Oy” the best.

If I didn’t have to pay tuition for my kid to attend college, I’d happily fork out whatever it costs to put my kid up in a hotel in Arlington for a week.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
In the last few years, almost all of the NCAA guys have attended. Finley attended one time and then didn’t attend again until after he signed, IIRC.
Burke, DeSimone (08) and Dunn (08) have attended every camp since they were drafted, IIRC.
Glass attended in 07, 08 and 09.
Thanks, I knew Finley missed a bunch but couldn’t remember the others. Finley is also from MN and DeSimone and Wey are from the East so maybe it’s easier for those guys to attend?

not that I know anything about any of their financial situations, but spending a week in Arlington isn’t cheap, either.

Sorry, please ignore the years in that post, I was starting to list the years and then stopped. Those aren’t draft years either, as both were drafted in 2007.
Plenty of NCAA players have attended in the past: Both Draft picks and Free agents.
Among draft picks:
Burke drafted in ’08; attended in ’08 and ’09
Dunn drafted in ’07; attended in ’07, ’08, and ’09
DeSimone drafted in ’07; attended in ’07, ’08, and ’09
Finley drafted in ’05; attended in ’07
Plus AGordon, Joudrey, Mrazek, Bruneteau, Ruth, Thomas and others have attended in the past.
I’m certainly interested in seeing Orlov, Kuznetsov, and Johansson impress at dev camp.
The KHL prospects may have the biggest edge on competition as that league continues to draw bigger names.
Eakin and Gustafsson seemed to do well in their stints with the bears and would do well being regulars at the AHL level specifically.
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Caleb Hebert is a guy it’ll be impossible to judge in D camp. He’s going to go straight from high school to playing with Calder Cup winners.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
This isn’t just about the on ice activities…off ice and on there’s a lot of training and education that takes place, nutrition, training regimens, etc., plus an opportunity to become more familiar with the organization and vice versa.
For those that have not followed summer dev. camp in the past, there’s also one morning typically dedicated to on-ice testing. I know in some years, there’s also been an early morning at the track.
Agreed to an extent. I think what we will be able to judge is his skating. It seems like skating has gotten him as far as he has, so if he is keeping up with Mackan and Eakin then he looks a lot better. If he’s not even keeping up with Kuger then he looks a lot less impressive. I don’t expect him to do much with the puck against these guys and he’ll definitely be physically immature, but I think there will be some limited benefit to seeing what he can do.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Guys like him, I think the point is to give him a dose of reality. After being the stud guy on the ice all his life, he’s going to get schooled by guys that won’t sniff the NHL – hopefully it motivates him to work hard.
Agree that about the only thing you can judge is his wheels at this point. On the one hand, you can’t teach speed. On the other, Rico Fata.

How bad did he look last year?
And if he can’t crack the SEL, then, no, not buying it.

He was completely and totally invisible at Rookie Camp in September for the days I was there. Eakin stood out for his wheels, Carlson stood out for how smooth he was compared to everyone else and for dominating anyone he was matched up against, both in drills and scrimmages.

To me Gus looked lazy and selfish — not untalented, just not willing to work for it.

He looks like a really talented player that just doesn’t want to play anymore.

Eh, that may not be fair. I’ve played with coaches sons before and a couple in particular were very skilled but didn’t seem to enjoy the game and also didn’t think quitting was an option. Given his dad’s history and coaching status in Sweden (until recently) I could see that being a dynamic.

Also possible. Maybe next week he’ll make the debate moot.

I’ve seen that dynamic far too often (heck, even when the kid wants to quit, nope, parents won’t let them). Those kids end up being miserable.

On snap. The resident Swedish Correspondent. What makes you say that? Has he taken strides this year in the Swedish league? Why hasn’t he even cracked the SEL yet?
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
I can’t really say that he improved that much apart from not being injured that much. And that’s the key for me he have either been injured or jus been coming back from an injury when he been at the different camps. So we just don’t know yet what kind of player he is.
I just watched a couple of games with him and I don’t think that is big enough sample size to say if he will be good enough or not.
It would surprise me a lot if he will be a top six forward and I still don’t understand why they picked him in the first round but I haven’t ruled him out as a nhl player yet.
To me Gus looked lazy and selfish — not untalented, just not willing to work for it.
That haven’t been my perception of him. And I never heard any of his previous coaches complain about it. Quiet the opposite in fact Borås picked him up because their coach had him as a junior player in Frölunda and thought he was a good addition to team not just because of his talent but for his good attitude, willingness to improve and being a good teammate.
I said this before but when he got back to Sweden the leauge’s were well on there way with full rosters. And the fact that he is the prototypical Swedish two way player that there are a dime a dozen of in Sweden didn’t make it easier for him.
To put it in perspective if Johannson doesn’t make the team and choose to not play in Hershey I’m not sure there will be a spot open for him in Färjestad. Not because he’s a bad player but because it’s a stacked team.

I’ve said before it was a shallow perception based on watching a few hours of development camp last summer. I’d love to be wrong, and plus it was a whole year ago. Your eyes are far more reliable in this case.

How could they?
Dan Dunn has number 80! I thought that number wasn’t available!
Actually this is an interesting batch of prospects… should be quite a camp…

Guess they didn’t retire Stretch’s number after all. May Dan Dunn bring honor to Stretch’s old number.
Rocking the Red since 1975
True, and Dimitri Khristich wore #8 before Ovechkin… if Dima came back (not likely at his age, but…) would they make Ovie give back #8? Certainly not.
When Zednik came for half a season, he didn’t get his 44 back from Steve Eminger, he wore 20.
Ring of Honor then! ;-)
