Mike Comrie made the list of available FA centers posted in yesterday’s clips. His stats look pretty good considering he only played 43 games, yet I haven’t heard his name come up as a good fit for the Caps. Why not? (I know almost nothing about him.)
by RPI93 on Jul 7, 2010 7:25 AM EDT via mobile reply actions
Because the Caps don’t want the Hilary Duff association that comes along with him.
A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory
Also because he’s a smallish center with a long injury history, declining point totals, and defensive issues.
Then again, I doubt he commands a long-term deal or a lot of money. So there’s that.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"

And, if I remember correctly, he has a reputation for being kind of a tool.

The logo thing was low-hanging fruit. Very few logos out there would lose to the ’Canes logo (even their secondary one shown on the website). They might have a Cup banner, but their logos are sorely lacking.
My wife calls them “the toilet bowl team” since their logo looks like a flushing terlet.

As soon as it was pointed out to me (2003?) that the main logo looked like a flush pattern, I haven’t been able to see it as anything else. At least the secondary logo, while not as good as the Weagle, isn’t quite so down the tubes…

A note on the RMNB article – Freddy Meyer’s QCOMP and Corsi QCOMP were worse than anyone who played on the Isle’s blueline for more than 40 games last season with the exception of Brendan Witt. No one got significantly better zone starts than anyone else, so that’s probably out as an explanation. His Corsi did look good, so he’s got that going for him, but he played limited, somewhat sheltered minutes at ES.
His numbers don’t indicate an especially good PK player – again, limited minutes and middling results, other than the goalies saving more shots for him than other players. On the PK, he may drive that more than he does at ES, I don’t know what the size of the effect is there.
I think that given equal contracts or even a 20%-30% premium, I’d rather have Mottau.

Myer is not a very good player. He benefited by being a relatively healthy player on a terrible team. The fact that he didn’t even average 17 minutes of ice time on the Islanders tells you something.
Stay away from him.
Yeah I would say you’ve already got a guy like Meyer in Tyler Sloan.

For some reason, Andrew Joudrey chose to wear all of Holtby’s gear for this event. Including his sweater, with a masking tape Joudrey over the Holtby. To his credit, he kept all the gear on (other than the mask) for the whole event.

That depends entirely on term and cost. Morrisonn is better than Sloskine and is someone I’d much rather have in the lineup on the regular than either of those two, but not at significant overpayment.

I’m in the “not under any circumstances” category. I would have been down with Jurcina. Morrisonn is just filler that will be hard to move out of the way for a real upgrade. I’d rather go into the season with Sloan and Erskine and the hope of acquiring a veteran.

I was going to argue that Morrisonn is better than replacement level, but I really can’t. He had high quality of teammates, sheltered minutes defensively and sheltered zone starts, while putting up replacement level metrics in just about every category. He’s still an upgrade at the 6D spot, but someone would have to get stashed in Hershey to bring in a deadline acquisition.

Well BB trusts him more than Sloskine. How much TOI did they get….
Shamo is obviously not a good player, but so long as we have Sloskine penciled into our 6/7 it’s hard to say that any regular NHL player wouldn’t make our D better. Anyone.

I’d rather start the season with Sloan, Erskine, and an extra 1 Million in the bank that can turn into 3-4 Million of cap space by season’s end.

I guess. I’m just over those two. Any time I see them in a Caps jersey is just going to bring back bad memories. Plus, when I think about what they are being paid combined, and what we could have for that price instead, I get despondent.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Plus you’ve got to account for injuries. There’s a good chance the D will take some injuries and the Caps will have both Sloskine playing for an extended period of time. With that in mind, I still might rather go with that if ShaMo wanted something near or an upgrade from his near $2 million salary.
Defense doesn’t necessarily win championships. Outscoring opponents, however, works every time. [RtR]
It’s worth noting that the worst offensive team to win the Cup since the lockout was the ANA squad from 2007, finishing 7th overall in Goals Per Game. The article’s point is spot on – you need both for a shot at the ultimate prize.

Who signs first – Corvo, Morrisonn or Pothier?
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
My guess is Corvo. We’ve been hearing how much Morrisonn thinks he’s worth, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see him try and get that, and I think Pothier’s a guy someone’s going to bring in relatively late in the free agency period to shore up their depth.

That would be a good fit for him. He has to play with a good defender, though, to allow him to play a little fast and loose.
Which ANA doesn’t have. ANA also has Fowler and Sbisa ready to jump to the NHL and they both play the same sort of offensive game as Corvo. That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be interested in Corvo, but I think they’ll look for that good defender first and then hope that unnamed defender can help mentor and stabilize Sbisa/Fowler.

I guess I could see that, but I don’t really know the history with him and LAK. They could afford him, depending on what they do about securing a scoring wing, but I think they’ll want him on a short term deal. He may be going for a longer deal, but like so many other FAs I’m not confident he’ll get one. Coming off the season and injury he had I don’t know how he’ll have the leverage to ask for a long term deal.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
And to further the term discussion, he’s 33 now so if he takes a 1 year deal he can try to build his value and work toward a longer contract that goes into his late 30s. A two year deal makes his next contract a 35+ and that will be harder for him to secure high dollars and term.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Seeing as how Doughty’s deal is up next year, they have to be careful at what they commit and for how much.
Doughty, Simmonds, and Johnson are all up at the same time. Oof.

Simmonds is an interesting one, he’s one of those glue players whose numbers don’t show his real value. JJ is the guy I’d think about walking away from if I’m LAK. They could get a nice haul on an RFA sheet or trade if they let him walk, and I’d bet he asks for more money than he’s worth.

Well ANA didn’t want to rush him. PHI basically had to bring him up in 08-09 because of cap crunch and some injuries and they sent him back to the WHL mid-way through the season. Well done, guys. ANA didn’t want to rush him and had what they thought was a solid D corps last year so they let him stay in juniors to finish his eligibility. He played in the Olympics and was pretty good. I think it’s highly likely that he makes the NHL. Unless Fowler outplays him in camp and they don’t want two rookies on D, I think both make ANA.

I hate to be obvious, but tell me how much each wants and I’ll have an answer for you. Right now it’s all about the dollars (and the term). GMs and players/agents are playing a high stake game of chicken and whatever player blinks first will get a contract. Saying all that, Corvo may be the last to be signed since he had the biggest contract last season and probably will come down the least.
Best of luck to Broda in Austria.

I don’t think he’s under any illusions as to what his role with the organization will be. But playing for Hershey is a pretty decent gig in the A, and a callup or three to Washington can’t be all bad.
I think by “play some games” in Washington he meant: “sit on the bench a few games in Washington and get that NHL paycheck for a few days”.

that’s how Washington has rewarded their AHL goalies in the past. Everyone gets a turn to sit on the bench and draw a cushy paycheck for a couple of days.

Seems likely that Mike Modano will go to Detroit. If Datsyuk and Zetterberg each play center again next year (they each had 1000+ faceoffs this year) that gives the Filppula, Modano, Helm, and Abdelkader as possible pivots. I don’t see them moving Filppula. Any interest in Helm or Abdelkader? Helm was their leading PK forward — I’d like to see him on the Caps.
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Sure. I love Helm’s combination of speed and tenacity, and Abdelkader’s a big guy who can skate well. I don’t think there’s any chance the Wings move Helm, though.
Or Abdelkader. They don’t take their time to develop guys just to move them. Maybe Abdelkader gets the ol’ Kyle Quincey, but I think they might feel a little burned over that one.

Neuvirth is the technician. He has the economy of motion of a goalie who knows he’s not as athletic as his peers, but relies on his technique to make saves, then his athleticism. He’s just as cool under pressure as Varly and now has two Calder Cup championships under his belt.
I’d say Varly has a ways to go to show he’s as cool under pressure as Neuvirth. People got carried away with Varly’s first NHL start at MON and his first handful of playoff games, but in the big picture I don’t buy the “cool under pressure” label for Varly. He’s not a guy that just crumbles under pressure, but I’d say it’s a mixed bag with him. Letting routine pop-ups get by your glove is not the definition of “cool under pressure.”

but Michal is very quiet and very motivated. Sometimes you misplace that and you don’t think he is that motivated."
I would say that Alzner and Varlamov are the two biggest question marks this year. Neither has played enough (and played consistently) at the NHL level to show me what I will expect from them.
Varlamov is more a health question mark. When he’s been healthy he’s been pretty consistent, but he hasn’t been healthy. I can understand questioning Alzner because of how it’s played out the last two years, but I don’t worry about him that much as long as they finally give him consistent ice.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
So in an ideal world — no injuries, no falling on face with a terrible 2 month stretch — how would you allot the starts in goal this year? 50-50? 60-40 Neuvirth?

I would go in with the intention of going 50/50 and basically just alternating starts. When one goalie gets hot, ride him for that period by giving him 2:1 starts. He’ll cool off and the other guy will get hot. Obviously, once injuries hit you have to adjust but I think 50/50-hot hand is the way to go.

I’m on board with RMNB’s suggestion of either Belanger or Madden to provide depth at C. I’m intrigued to see what Mackan can do based on the confidence the organization seems to be showing in him (as well as MP), but I think it’s imperative to get a good faceoff/defensive guy to be the 3C. I’d rather Belanger but you have to think Madden would take a one-year deal. And Madden brings a lot of veteran leadership.
Besides, Madden would fill the minimum roster requirement of two Wolverines.

I don’t know. Not taking anything away from Schultz’s strong year, but for a guy who started the year as the 6/7 d-man, didn’t look good in the playoffs and RFA years left, I would’ve liked to have another year of him on a one year deal before committing that money/term. They must really have feared arbitration.
I can’t wait to see OFB’s reaction.

Including MP, Calznerson, Sloane, Erskine, B Gordo and Schultz at 2.75/year in the calculation, the Caps have about $10M in cap space left.
10 forwards, 7 D, 2G at that figure.
They need another 3 forwards. Fehr will be one of them. Then a center and a spare forward.
Could possibly stick Sloane or Erskine in Hershey and add a D.
Interesting times.

Yeah, I’m thinking he starts the season in DC.
Having seen what 121 points and a presidents trophy gets you (Richard) in the playoffs, I wouldn’t be surprised to see GM content to assemble a roster that will be good enough to make the playoffs, and then try to load up with an early trade for a pending UFA and some deadline acquisitions.
Or not. What do I know?

If he’s on the roster, BB is going to play him. The only way he’s not on the roster is either if he departs via trade, or if he pushes himself into arb and gets an obscene number.
I’m holding out hope that he gets traded, but his value is pretty low, given his stretch swoon and his playoff performance.

I don’t think he started the season as a 6/7 – I think he was in the press box because the team was trying to play Juice and Mo and find a trade partner. Once that petered out, he was in and getting 17-20 minutes a night.
I think they wanted to avoid a one year deal because they were afraid another good season would drive the price up more. 2.75 might be more than it’d take to get him now, but it’s almost certainly less than he’d otherwise be getting in years three and four.
$2.75M per, if my mental math is correct?
Sigh. So much for something under 2. Guess that was always a pipe dream.

How come we would have taken a cap hit last year but not this year? Because it is the last year of the contract?
I know, that is because they didn’t waive him. But I thought they WOULD have taken a cap hit had they waived him, which is why they didn’t waive him. So my question is why no cap hit for waiving him this year?
he had to go on waivers every X number of days, right? Until the Caps found a place for him, of course.
#savethekittens!
Donation info for SAVES FOR KIDS 2010!! Make a difference.
If we put him on reentry waivers, we’d have to take half his cap hit for the remainder of the deal. By stashing him in Finland, we didn’t.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
So back to my original question, why do we take no cap hit this year? Gosparkly said we take no cap hit this year.
you don’t get a cap hit for waiving someone. We couldn’t waive him last year because of the no-movement clause. he had to consent. We only would take a cap hit if we put him on re-entry waivers and someone claimed him – by stashing him in Finland last year, we didn’t have to put him on re-entry waivers.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Well, if another team claims him off waivers, then they take his cap hit. The Caps don’t.
If nobody claims him, we can loan him to a Finnish/Swiss/Russian club and have them pay some or all of his salary. In that case, he’s a non-roster player, and his cap hit doesn’t count against the cap.
If he doesn’t agree to such a loan agreement, we can stash him in the minors and have him healthy scratched each night in Hershey.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
KarlW, you’re thinking of re-entry waivers which what Nyls would need to clear to come up to the NHL. On re-entry waivers, the cap hit is split 50/50 on the claiming and original teams.

Apparently Pittsburgh and Edmonton were also bidding for him. Roll THAT around in your brain for a minute – he would rather play in Buffalo than either of those cities, including one where Sid the God plays.
Please. It’s God the Sid.

Includes performance bonuses on a 1 year 35+ contract, at the moment, it’s listed at 1.15M…note, the connection with Lindy Ruff /Florida Panthers years.
sorry, typo on my part. you’re correct, it’s $1.15

…I know. ’Twas a joke.
Although really once you’re in the $1-1.5 million range it’s not like the difference would be that big that he wouldn’t choose to go somewhere for slightly less.
You’re nuts. If Edmonton offered $1M and Buffalo offered $1.5M, I’m pretty sure that’s a big enough difference to sway someone to go for the money.
Damn right you do :P And it’s a decent point, I’ll grant you.
But since we don’t know what the different offers were, I’m sticking with my funny "ha ha he rejected Pittsburgh to go to Buffalo joke. :)
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but because I think I’m the smartest person alive, I’ll repeat it:
Fans are more than happy to spend owners’ money and sign contracts for a lower value for our favorite players.
I’m sure we all can’t count how many times we’ve heard someone say, “Player X already has $20 million! Why does he need $4 million more?” Because it’s $4 freakin’ million, that’s why!
the fact that one of the offers is Edmonton is enough to sway me to the other team.

Whoever had Corvo as the first FA re-signing, collect your winnings. Corvo back to Carolina, 2 years.
$4.5 million total – so he’s making just $500K less than Sarge over the next 2 years. Can we all agree that Schultz > Corvo? Looking more and more like a steal than ever.
Vogs’ wondering about “where Pothier, Morrisonn, Sutton, Mitchell and others come in.” is more interesting/potentially good.
Look at this signature line. Notice the lack of spelling errors and self-whoring?
Corvo helps set the market for those guys, don’t you think? So, lower than that. Substantially lower for Pothier, Mo and Sutton, I would think.
Mitchell, somewhere between 1.65 and 1.9?

Figure he’s going to have to suck up a smaller deal for a year, given his health issues?
I was waaaaaay optimistic with Schultz, though, so take this for what it’s worth (hint: not much).

I think if the Caps sign Mitchell it will/should be one year, $2.5-3 million. A slight pay cut from last year, short-term deal to let him prove that he’s completely healthy.
The fact that Sutton is still out there makes me nervous. We were rumored to be in on those negotiations (although that usually means we’re not, but who knows?)
Maybe they should let the interns run the ship. Of course, they did forget to mention one of our young D…

Also need a week or two at Japers’ U to get some of their facts straight:
The Caps perhaps could have had a few more [solid role players] last offseason if they had gotten creative with their salary cap and signed guys like Ovi and Semin to long deals that resulted in small cap hits during their first season or two of the new contracts.
Due to their shortsightedness and fiscal ineptitude Chicago now has to essentially sell off a large part of the soul of their team.
The short and sweet of it is, Washington should want nothing to do with Chicago’s managerial style.
Hmm, sounds like OFB should be glad we didn’t sign AV to a long expensive contract.
