Caps Sign Boyd Gordon

Per the team:

ARLINGTON, VA. – The Washington Capitals have signed center/right wing Boyd Gordon to a one-year contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The deal, per Pierre LeBrun, is for one-year and $800,000.

Agreed. I think a healthy Gordo bumps Steckel down the depth chart and improves our PK.

Waiting to see if perhaps Stecks had his career-worst year last year, or if that’s really what he is. If the latter, then he’s a candidate for permanent HS status.

Yep. I’m investing in Steckel Stock this coming season. His numbers have a ceiling, but proportionaly I’m bullish. Don’t know how long of a leash he gets tho.

Are you truly surprised? Gordo brings some things to the table that aren’t all that common on the Caps – PK ability, faceoff wins, and center depth. Why would they throw away center depth when they’re not what you’d call swimming in it?

Gordon played well in the playoffs. Seems like that is the kind of guy that we would want to stick around.

I’m sure being sidelined by a major back injury for more the half the season scared potential suitors off. Plus, there’s that whole gentleman’s agreement about poaching RFAs.

I really hope he reverses his trend over the past four years (decreasing number of games played in each season, along with decreasing point totals). But otherwise, it’s a pretty good depth signing.

Gordo has his place in NHL history as the other cap in the video of “the goal”. Good thing he didn’t try and tap that puck in himself.

In another trip down memory lane, on Opening Night in the 2003 season, Boyd Gordon was centering the first line with Jaromir Jagr and Semin was a healthy scratch.

i’d be intregued but i’m not sure that hanlon would break up the 1st line and i like the semin-laich-fehr line, which would probably be broken up if gordon played 1st line center

Gordo's Contract

His 2009-10 salary was 761K, the Caps had to offer a 5% raise to qualify him, which means they had to offer him $799,050. For sanity’s sake, they probably just pushed it up to $800K in the QO meaning he signed his QO.
