On the Free Agency busts in the linked article from the Winnipeg Sun, I’ve noticed that several of them were by the New York Rangers.
Also, the site having the translated article on Orlov has a link to a story that Kovy will return to the Devils (or is that a link to an incorrect story later debunked).

Didn’t they just exhume Fischer’s body to see if he was the father of some kid? I saw it on the NY Post’s homepage when I went to laugh at the Kovalchuk reports…
Yes. They’re trying to determine if he’s the father of this child in the Philippines.

Hockey or Die:
Belanger probably won’t be looking for much more than a 2-year deal
huh. thats new
And anyone like Dominic Moore for a little depth at center? I know 2C is the main concern and he wouldn’t fit this, but if the Caps could get him for a low cap hit, he’d be a nice 3C.
I’d much prefer to see what MP can do in a 3C position in camp before overpaying for a guy who may be available for much cheaper much closer to the season opener (as Moore was last year).
Look at this signature line. Notice the lack of spelling errors and self-whoring?
Somewhat lost in the whole 2C mess is the question of who will be the 3C. The initial assumption was probably MarJo/MP/Flash, as the “new guy” would be 2C. Now it seems to be whichever of those current Caps doesn’t get the 2C spot. But there’s time yet to add a 2C or a 3C. I personally don’t see much sense in paying much for a 3C right now, but I also don’t want to see David Steckel centering the 3rd line on opening night.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t think MP is a 3rd line center. He needs to be on the top two lines to be successful.

Disagree. I could see Chimmer-MP-Fehr working.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Yes. If I could chose, I would rather the Caps have an excellent 2nd-line center than a mediocre 3rd-liner. Tough choice, though.

All this talk of trades and MP… are there any other rookies Centers we got that are ripe for the NHL yet?
Well, perhaps Johansson. Very, very longshot on Eakin. And Beagle is probably NHL-ready for the role which he’d be needed (but that’s obviously not a scoring-line role). Otherwise, nope.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
It’s entirely possible that the player under contract for next year who is most prepared to step in and give the Caps what they need at 2C in October is…
…Keith Aucoin.
(honestly, not a bad option if the plan is to bank cap dollars in pursuit of Brad Richards)

Blah blah too small. Tater’s great, but the same criticisms to be said about him are the same criticisms that are said about MP, with the addition of “AAAA player”, and I’d rather MP get the chance.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
He needs to be on the top two lines to be successful.
Let us pray.
I think he can do it. I’;m always afraid his bite-sizedness is going to be a liability but so far it seems to be working for him. He always seems to be slipping past huge defenders and draws a lot of penalties. What is a simple push against another player is a headshot against him :)
He sticks to the puck like glue when battling in the corners too.. kind of Backstrom-esque.
The sample size is as small as the man to whom they refer. I’m not nearly as optimistic as most around here about his long-term ability to land and hold the 2C job.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I think a lot of us are underselling the potential for Johansson to be capable of that spot – I get that most of us have very little info on him but it’s not like GMGM to come out and say a guy no one’s seen is capable of being in the NHL right now.
As I understand it he’s kind of a lesser Backstrom, right? I just don’t think he should be ruled out as 2nd line center, and while there’s no guarantee he makes it I think he’s being left out of the discussion. Which leaves us with Matty P and Flash. Which is why people are panicking.
The problem is that his skill set maps to the NHL better as a great 3C. Even once he’s fully integrated into the league he may be more of a stopgap 2C.
Atta dinnin stick a who!

Until we see what he can and can’t do on this side of the pond, I’d be hesitant to pigeonhole his skill set.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I was kind of wondering that about Johansson as well. I don’t expect a second coming of Backstrom, but he was still a first round pick. Backstrom became a first line center at age 20 (late fall birthday), why can’t Johansson make second line center at 20 (birthday in October)?

from the examiner article
For despite being 15 million under the cap and having definite needs in terms of getting a shutdown defender and second line center, we haven’t done anything, as others like Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New Jersey pulled the trigger on deals that should vastly solidify their team, especially on defense.
Misleading as the $15m cap space does not include Schultz, fehr, etc. As discussed yesterday, if these guys arb hearings go well (for them) that true cap space is more like in the five range. You sign one of the fa dmen he’s talking about then you are talking about next to no cap space barring a trade.
That said, I do agree with the tone, that this team was a playoff flop and while experience and age will help make them better, it probably won’t be enough. But my calendar says July not September.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...
I’m always somewhat disappointed at first glance when nothing happens during free agency or the trade deadline, but after waiting a few days I’m pretty happy with GMGM this offseason. We’ve still got Flash and I’ll be pretty upset if the Caps let him go for nothing or can’t trade him due to arbitration. If GMGM can sign him before arbitration and get something in a trade then this offseason will be a success. Less is more.
You sign one of the fa dmen he’s talking about then you are talking about next to no cap space barring a trade.
You’re also probably talking about choosing between Green and Carlson in a couple of years.

What the hell does that mean? Anyway, the only team he mentions that actually improved their defense with a big name free agent signing is Pittsburgh, and it took two signings and $9 Million to do it. I don’t think either Martin or Michalek is as good as Gonchar was two years ago.
New Jersey just replaced one departing player with another who is not nearly as good a fit with their team, and Philly didn’t “vastly solidify” anything by signing a single 40-year old.

I don’t know that it’s terrible – they have a mediocre goalie, so building a strong D in front of him is probably a good way to go.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I don’t know if I’d call MAF mediocre. Inconsistent maybe. But as to the D signings, I won’t argue that they’re going to help. The point is that Pens have to go into the free agent market because their pipeline from WB-Scranton is basically empty and that falls on the GM. The Caps can bring up Alzner and Carlson on entry level contracts while the Penguins have to go out and overpay free agent defenseman. And because they’ve boxed themselves into that corner, there’s no money left to fill glaring needs on wing. Yet Shero is hailed as a genius when he’s basically correcting his own mistakes.
You might not call MAF mediocre, but the stats do.

Stat-wise agreed. But I have a hard time calling a guy who’s led his team to two Finals and won a Cup mediocre. A lot of people called Grant Fuhr average, but winning can trump a lot of things. Maybe overrated is the better description of Fleury.

And Ward’s deal was signed this year, right before the year of the goalie decline. You think they still love that contract? It’s not a big deal because they don’t have anyone else to pay right now, but locking up a goalie for 6+ after this season doesn’t look so hot.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
If you look at the moves in isolation they were good moves. When Pittsburgh won a Cup, they did it largely as a product of the unheralded defensive play of Scuderi and Gill, good (finally) playoff goaltending, and grinders who paid a price. The Penguins never replaced the Scuderi and Gill part. Michalek and Martin go a ways to doing that, although until they actually play, nothing is certain.
But if you do look at it in context, the Penguins still have the persistent winger problem that confounds them as much as the lack of center depth does for the Caps. Although the thing that might be most intriguing about the Penguins this year might be their chronically underachieving power play. New coach for that special teams unit this year.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Disagree. They don’t have a persistent winger problem. Sid makes everyone around him better, so how can they have a persistent winger problem?

I’ll be curious to see how the Penguins powerplay, which was average last season, responds to losing one of the point men in the game. Michalek and Martin may be better defensively, but they don’t hold a candle to Gonchar offensively.
Time for Letang and Goligoski to step it up on the offensive side of things.

Irrespective of PIT’s luck with the lottery, Shero is a very solid GM. He cobbled together a first line out of dust at the deadline two years ago and while he has given away a ton of picks, he has built the team properly to compete every year. Hard to quibble with his track record.
More norrissey, less morrissey
Pitt had the cap space to address either their D or their Wings, but not both. And with no prospects ready to step in this year, they had no choice but the FA route.
They overpaid for Martin and Michalek, and they’ll regret those contracts before they’re done.

Other than the Hossa rental, the Pens have had a rotating poo-poo platter of wingers for the last three years (and I guess Ryan Malone, but he’s the best of a bad lot) and it hasn’t stopped them from hovering around the top five in the NHL in scoring. I don’t think that’s going to change next year, regardless of whether or not who they line up next to Crosby and Malkin are true “top-six” wingers.
Their defense, on the other hand, was pretty bad. I think they got better marginal return by going big on free-agency defenders than they would have by adding offensive pieces of any stripe; there was a lot more to gain by shoring it up.

The Caps did get Robert Lang in an attempt to bring in a center who’d had previous success with Jagr. And that deal was great for the Caps. Lang was the Caps best player for a season, and his trade was one of the best of the rebuild.
By the way, Lang’s still out there and he had a nice season for himself last year in Phoenix.

I always thought Lang got a bad deal here from Caps fans, who seemed to regard him as lazy. I was always amazed at his ability to anticipate, to be able to find voids in the defense, appear in them, and get scoring chances. Very economical player.

Not really. He was a fine player and was acquired to play in a different system than the one the Caps currently employ. There was no faulty logic in signing Nylander to center the best goal scorer in the world and mentor a young stud from his home country. The NMC was a mistake, but the deal itself wasn’t, I maintain.

Errrrrmmm… I still don’t like that deal. Nylander’s a nifty stickhandler and a good passer, but there’s a reason he’s bounced around as much as he has. He regularly makes horrendous turnovers and he manages to do it in the worst possible places on the ice. His defense leaves much to be desired, and with greater distance his “point per game” performance is looking more and more like a Jagr-fueled mirage.
Still, put him at #2C and I’d wager that he’d outperform (points-wise) Cullen or Lombardi.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
I think it was a good move at the time for that Caps team. Alex needed a center. Nick needed a mentor (or so it was thought). The team needed a legit playmaker.
The terms were a bit heavy, but the Caps had to overpay at that point. And obviously the NMC was a nightmare. But I still think it was a good move at the time.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Agreed, the Caps had traded away Zubrus and everyone knew that the Caps needed a top line center for Ovi. Backstrom was still unknown as a NHL player, heck I don’t think they knew if he needed to spend time in Hershey or not. Datsyuk had resigned with the Wings and all of the big names signed mega deals that first day. Nyls was the best guy left.
"Yes, but Rimmer Directive 271 states just as clearly, 'No chance you metal ba****d.'"
Agreed. The Nylander signing made sense at the time. It clearly backfired, but it was a pretty well heralded move before the system change, and the torn rotator cuff eliminated Nylander’s effectiveness.

I (and I’m sure others) always forget that rotator cuff injury until someone brings it up. And then I remember that Nylander was so damn determined to play through it because the season was just getting back on track. He wanted to play so badly.

Jagr was a trade and then signed to an extension
He scored 121 points for the Pens before the trade. (52 goals)… Why on earth would Pittsburgh want him traded? Unless they just plain couldn’t afford him.
Bingo. They were in dire financial straits and started their dump-and-rebuild.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
IIRC, yes – but I’m not sure he even really wanted to be traded, I think he was trying to squeeze more money out of the team and they called his bluff.
Oops.
In the context of the time, he might have been trying to force a deal to the Rangers, who were seen as the Penguins’ only suitor (at least publicly). The very day he was traded, Brooksie wrote a column that more or less said, “Craig… take the Ranger deal and like it.”
If you've read this far...seek help.
So much for logic
I am convinced that had the Capitals, instead of the Penguins, added a veteran presence in trading for Bill Guerin, we would have won that series and may have even gone to the Stanley Cup. Yet it didn’t happen.
This needs to change. We must be more aggressive.
the Caps absolutely need to add some additional pieces.
I’m guessing the writer didn’t follow the Caps in 08-09, otherwise he would have noticed how being aggressive and signing additional pieces like Fedorov and Theodore on top of guys like Poti, Nylander and Kozlov the summer prior had the Caps so hard up against the salary cap that they couldn’t make any deadline deals.
What a poorly thought out and poorly-written article.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
How about the aggressive move to trade for a goalie when you have the face of the franchise trying to lead the team to the playoffs? Sounds ballsy to me.
And the Caps simply couldn’t trade for Guerin at the time due to Clark and Pothier uncertainty. Probably their own fault for painting themselves into that corner, but it was just an impossibility. But we know that.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Go Ugly Early, Beat the Rush
And they painted themselves into that corner by being pretty aggressive.
It’s one thing to be aggressive when there’s something out there worth going after that you really need. This free agent market was absolutely barren in terms of what the Caps needed, and the prices for spare parts were through the roof. Other than Kurtis Foster (who might have made an interesting Sloskine replacement), there haven’t been many signings that I wish we had made instead.
Now, if it comes out a couple years from now that GMGM made no attempts at moving obvious trade candidates like Semin and Flash and we end up with Flash as our #2C all year – then by all means grab the torches and pitchforks. Until then, everyone needs to take a Xanax.
'Cause the end of what it was is what it is right now...
Other than Kurtis Foster (who might have made an interesting Sloskine replacement), there haven’t been many signings that I wish we had made instead.
Exactly. And here’s the thing – even for Foster, there were probably other teams bidding. I think we forget that just wanting a guy and trying to get him don’t automatically equal getting him. Ultimately the player has to decide where he wants to go and it has to be the perfect fit of team, term, $, etc. My favorite thing is people assuming that McPhee’s been playing solitaire in his office or something just because we haven’t signed someone.
Specifically regarding Foster, I’m firmly against throwing FA dollars (and cap space) at third-pairing guys. The Caps have the warm bodies to round out the bottom end of the D corps.
"You want to start being part of the Rink? Fine, but more’s expected of you than John/Jane Cap Fan. Carry the cause of informed discussion to the unwashed masses and don’t crap in the yards of other SBN sites if you decide to go over there. They’re passionate about their teams too, no need to troll elsewhere and/or be a sore winner." --BP
I respectfully disagree with this line of thinking. Given that the Caps aren’t hard up against the cap, any and all upgrades are exactly that – upgrades which make the team better. If it’s a move that bumps Erskine out of the top six with a new #6, it’s still a better Caps team for it.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
But is the game worth the candle?
Once the RFA/arb deals are accounted for, the team will likely have room for one major upgrade. I’d prefer to save the cap space rather than get a Foster-type guy for the bottom pairing.
No?

I think the tacit assumption here is that a depth deal doesn’t preclude you from making an impact move. I think we all agree that we wouldn’t want a 3rd-pairing defenseman who prevents the team from bringing in a top-four or a 2C (which is why Bieksa might not work here).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Well, then, yes. If an upgrade down the lineup doesn’t preclude an upgrade at the top, then by all means. I’m in favor of all upgrades, generally. Who isn’t?
I was speaking from a tactical persepctive with regard to Foster and his like: it’s better to conserve ammunition until the RFA situation is sorted out, and we see what the market holds at the end of the summer.

I’m bangin’ the drum for Mike Mottau, if he can be had for 1.3 to 1.5 and short years – he had himself a pretty decent season in Jersey and he’d be a nice 4-5 type player, I think.

Mottau’s a pretty good player, and he can step up and play big minutes if needed. I think his ATOI in Jersey was somewhere around 22 minutes. And he hasn’t been resigned by the Devils; I have to think he’s an option for the Caps at that time and term.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
How about the aggressive move to trade for a goalie when you have the face of the franchise trying to lead the team to the playoffs? Sounds ballsy to me.
Not to mention dealing your captain mid-season while you have the best record in the NHL.
The way the “the Caps aren’t aggressive!” meme has spread in the last week has really been amazing. In the two deadlines they had the means to make a move, they acquired a total of seven players. They dealt their captain for a third liner. They benched Olie when they thought they had a better option. They’ve added player in the free agent market. It’s simply absurd to say they’re not aggressive.
People don’t want aggressive, they want stupid, which brings me to another point. If you look at the teams that have had recent sustained success in the NHL, they’re not the ones going out and getting the big names free agents or selling the the farm at the deadline. They’re the ones who decide what their core is, build around it, and add players who fit when they become available at a reasonable price.

It’s all part of the instant analysis mentality that exists at places like TSN and the Hockey News who insist on listing winners and losers three hours into day one. I still believe that McPhee will make some moves before training camp, but he needs to know how the Schultz, Fehr and Flash contracts turn out before he does anything. That’s just basic business sense. Others can rip him for a lack of moves ( like a certain host on the Saturday radio show), but the Caps don’t need a lot and there is still plenty out there and the price is going down with each passing day.

dingdingdingdingdingding… winnah winnah, chicken dinnah! Look at how many players signed big multi-year contracts with new teams since the lockout… see many (any) Stanley Cup winners in there? Even Marian Hossa needed more than one try.
No one yet knows with any certainty what the Caps’ 23-man roster will look like on opening night (or, say, Chicago or New Jersey, both of which would appear to have serious cap problems). Until then, it seems a bit silly to be giving out final grades.

Orlov is signed with his Russian team for two more years. Via this link, the Caps would have to buy out his contract. (Don’t have any numbers, and Metallurg isn’t in a hurry to release "one of its best young defenders). But the fact that he’s here a week ahead of time might indicate they are thinking about trying.
Not sure how he would add gritty veteran depth on the blueline just yet, though.

My own, absolutely uninformed (having seen none of these guys play and seeing only a couple in cheesy “come out from behind the curtain” photos) take?
Evgeny Kuznetsov C/RW — Pprobably picked (26th) far below where his talent should have landed him (top-ten), perhaps higher than he might have been slotted by other teams, given the “Russian problem” of bringing players to North America. I suppose at some point he and Johansson could duke it out to see which gets the 2C and which gets the 2RW spot. That would be, I suspect, Kuznetsov’s high end.
Stanislav Galiev F — Bigger body than Kuznetsov, already has a year in North America (QMJHL). Another guy who went a lot later (3rd round/86th) than his talent projected (low first/early second round?). Perhaps a “next generation” top-six forward a few years down the road or a scoring winger on a third line that is used as a scoring line.
Philipp Grubauer G — odd pick, but the Caps traded up to get it (sending the 116th and 146th pick to Toronto for the 112th pick, used here). Scouting reports were all over the place on this guy (“classic European flopper”… “this kid is a winner!” (I didn’t add the exclamation point)). I’m guessing he will not see the Verizon Center ice, at least not in a Caps’ sweater.
Caleb Herbert C — Catch him at development camp. Since 2000, the Caps have had a grand total of two fifth round or lower picks (of 40 such picks) play for them (Andrew Gordon and Mathieu Perreault).
Samuel Carrier D — see above

Not a steal, I don’t think, but not horrible. He’s a youngish G, never been the day-in, day-out #1, but he’s had some success and this buys out his RFA years. He’d probably have gotten more in arb.

Pretty manageable deal. They didn’t throw the bank at him (which would have been dumb), so I give them credit for being smart. Guy was great in the playoffs, but his career high in GP is 45 (this year), and he played in front of a great defensive team. We’ll see how good he really is in STL.

Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
A first and a third. They got a former first and a former third. Seems like a wash. The first round pick is more NHL-ready because he’s had time to develop (though they have their 1 and 2 C locked up long-term…) and the third is a longer shot than a third round pick would be, but he is also further developed.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Glückwünsche, Joel Broda!
He’s landed on his feet in Austria on the defending champion EC Red Bull Salzburg. The club sounds very happy to have him, too:
The Canadian Joel Broda is on Saturday in Salzburg, and has already landed this morning the first time with his new team trained for. Master EC Red Bull Salzburg is pleased-year-old striker another young talent in the Red Bull Hockey Model fit to the 20 and has … a one-year cooperation agreement. Head coach Pierre Pagé know about the Canadians, that "he has a dream, and the NHL is. Joel has the potential in the Red Bull hockey model and would like to hear about the training and games with the Red Bulls decisively improve on. "
He may never get into the NHL, but Ima guessing he has fun this season in Salzburg. :)
And when I looked at the website, I was even more impressed. Red Bull actually owns the team, so he’s part of the Red Bull sports empire. Bet that comes with more perks than a year in the A.

I think that’s a nice little raise for him, considering they probably could have made him sign his QO. Not enough to hurt the salary cap at all, but enough that it shows some good faith to a battler who’s always given the team everything he could. I like that.

he’s one of the most underrated players on the Caps. A healthy Gordon provides some quality depth options at C and RW and on the PK. And at one hell of a bargain. I’m glad to see him back and I hope his back cooperates this season.
It’s not really a raise over his QO, though. $800,00 is what you would get if you were rounding up to a nice round figure on his QO ($799,313, if I did the math right)
