The Post still hasn’t published the news of Tarik’s transfer yet.

Per TEB:

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was time to try something different. More important, it was time to have time to be a full-time dad.

It's The Wait for Red October. Except rather than Sean Connery, Alex Baldwin, and Sam Neill, it's George McPhee, Bruce Boudreau, and Alex Ovechkin.

At least Tarik told his Twitter followers the story. (The Post has been mum so far. Or I’m just not looking in the right place.)

It sounds like its a good decision for him and his family. NASCAR is just weekends, and Georgetown Hoops is only a few nights a week for 4 months. The Caps beat is 7 months for preseason and regular season alone, and then hopefully 2 more months of playoffs. Lots of travel, nights away from home, etc. A hockey beat is a lengthy assignment.

Katie does a good job with the moring CI links, and I am sure she’ll be good as the Caps regular reporter. She had a great teacher, and this is a great opportunity for her.

Scary how much time has been passing. First, it’s 4 members of the Caps’ blue line being younger than my first born. Now it’s the Caps’ beat writer.

So she is a Pens fan…this is not good..not good at all…She should be ready to dance with T.J “King Kong”

Corey is from Pittsburgh and for my money, he’s the best beat writer the Caps have had since I’ve been sentient.

The cream of the crop can rise above their birthplace.

Actually, if a reporter can’t do that, he’s in the wrong line of work.

I always enjoyed Robert Fachet…gotta give credit to a guy who gave up an WaPo editorship for a beat writing gig to cover the Caps.

Where do you get that she is a Pens fan?

Will take over the blog or as beat writer? Surely WP thinks the Capitals merit more than a green twenty-something.

Choking since 1985.

Katie is the new beat reporter for the Caps. Yes she is a 20-something. The WP views the Caps beat as a stepping stone on the way up the ladder. Most of the Caps beat reporters who were good (Robert Fachet comes to mind immediately) move onto the other projects (Redskins, Nats, etc.).

I suspect if the Caps beat wasn’t as demanding, Tarik would still be on it, but he wants to spend more time with his family, and that means that 40+ nights away from home, 40+ home game days that start at 10 AM and go until midnight, plus playoffs, preseason… I understand of what he speaks. Georgetown hoops is probably 20 nights away and I don’t think the WP sends someone to all NASCAR events, so, that’s probably no more than 20 more travel days….all on weekends where he might be able to take the kids with him for part/all of it.

Katie may be a twenty-something, but she did spend time on the beat as an intern, and the way I recall it, she did just fine. I’m not worried.

Agreed. She would make the early morning post to CI with the links from around the league and would also put up blog postings during games if something came up. If you know how to listen and how to write, you can be a beat reporter if you want to put in the effort. And for an NHL or NBA team it is a lot of work. There’s more travel than for baseball (yes, baseball teams play 81 games on the road, but usually in series of 3 or 4 games, so there are only 25-28 trips a year.) and more nights away from home.

I think this is a big opportunity for her and she will make the effort to succeed.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
