Wednesday Caps Clips
Your savory breakfast links:
- Tomas Fleischmann and the Washington Capitals came to terms late Tuesday evening, agreeing on a one-year contract for a reported $2.6 million and thereby avoiding arbitration. Welcome back, Flash. [Japers' Rink, Caps Insider, CSN, PHT, RMNB, Frankovic, Caps Snaps, McNally, Red Line Station]
- The late-breaking news threatened to steal the attention away from the day's big story -
Maxime Talbot's big yapthe 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic press conference. [NHL.com and yes, Sidney Crosby gets a fair amount of face time in the coverage. [Empty Netters (and again), Sporting News, WaPo, Stecks!] - The festivities included the unveiling of the official WC logo along with the individual team logos. Both the Caps and the Penguins are going über classic with their inaugural-season logos. [Caps Insider, Icethetics, with uni speculation at Puck Daddy, Icethetics, The Pensblog (but no one makes this key point)]
- The presser itself was fairly deadly, but the pace picked up with the "skills competition," in which the players in attendance were tasked with shooting a hockey puck through the goalpost uprights at Heinz Field. Mike Knuble led off, and his first shot was a perfect 3-pointer. After that the results were decidedly mixed, though David Steckel and his brown flip-flops did well, and the competition concluded after four rounds once Sid got his dinger. [Caps Insider, Puck Daddy]
- L'affaire Talbot. [It Begins, SteinBog, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, PHT, National Post, FFODC]
- Mike Colligan wants to know - why Pens/Caps so soon? And could it have to do with the L word? [The Hockey Writers]
- With Flash back in the fold for this season, it's time to talk centers. Again. [Kings of Leonsis]
- Speaking of centers, could Keith Aucoin be the answer to the Caps' second-line pivot search? We'll respond with this visual. [THN, echoed at PHT]
- Maybe we should talk goalies too. [Capitals Gains]
- How could anyone not love Braden Holtby? Other than opposing forwards, of course. [Bears Bites, Stingrays Video]
- Russian Machine Never Breaks is turning one, and takes a look back. Those were the days, my friend. [RMNB]
- Finally, for those of you who like to pre- or post-game down at RFD, here's a great deal for you - $20 worth of food and drink for only $10. Stock up. [SB Nation Team Pick (commercial deal)]

According to Daniel Tolensky
Fleischmann’s AAV is actually $2.7 mil – there’s a $100k signing bonus on top of his $2.6 mil salary.
CapGeek haven’t updated the signing bonus yet though.
Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.
I just think Talbot thought that the NHL wasn’t doing enough to promote the Pens/Caps rivalry. Since there are never any articles written comparing Crosby and Ovechkin, or any articles about the Pens and Caps rivalry, or any animosity between the two fanbases, I think Max realized that he just needed to spice things up.
I’m okay with this.

Talbot and AO… that’s my cue to leave. Have fun today boys. I’m sure the debate about which too-rich, too-entitled athlete is more of a douche will be riveting. I’ve got to go administer a shellacking to 200 multiple choice questions..

Good luck with the exam.
Thanks. And I wasn’t taking a shot at you. I just don’t have much interest in the Talbot stuff and pretty much that was the reason I ignored the Caps Clips when I got out of the test yesterday.

Remember – when in doubt choose C.
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
Is that “both A and B”?

Could be. Same premise holds. If you don’t know whether it’s A or B, choose C. If C is “both A and B” or “none of the above” or a separate answer, choose it.
Alternatively, you could take the Spicoli route and just fill in the scantron to a nice design.

Enh, I take the Talbot / AO stuff for what it is – a little bit of ill-advised tongue-flapping that’s lighting up the hockey channels just because it’s Pens / Caps and it’s summertime. Mildly entertaining for about thirty seconds and meh after that.
I think SA-Town’s right, though, and Talbot had better have his head on a swivel if he and ovi ever share an ice sheet this season.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Eh, the right move by Ovi is to ignore it and just play his game. Someone else is going to be the one to plaster him, although I’m not sure if there’s anyone else on the team who could do it as well.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Also, here’s the beginning of the talking it back, courtesy of the the Post-Gazette:
“I was talking about him on the ice, about playing against him,” Talbot said, adding that, being a French-Canadian whose second language is English, he was not sure of the implications of the word he used to describe Ovechkin.
Sure he wasn’t.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Uh-huh. Sorry, Talbot, nice try.
It’s hard to imagine Ovi and Talbot being on the ice together very much anyway,
I dunno. Ovi needs to (and will) stand up for himself, too. Besides, Ovi just likes to hit people, too.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
I’m not going down this rabbit hole, but Ovi absolutely does not need to "stand up for himself over what some fourth-liner said about his off-ice persona on a radio show.

Agreed. However, harkening back a little to the discussion yesterday, if Sean Avery could get suspended over maligning a player’s girlfriend to the media, I think the league needs to fine Talbot an amount that hurts just a little. It’s not suspension worthy, but he’s already aware he acted like a jerk; that won’t stop him (and others) from doing it again.
"It's always good to have vikings."

Fine him? He only “insulted” him once. You really think the NHL really fine him over one word?

Disagree, and this will be my last word on the non-issue. Whereas Avery was in an NHL locker room and called over members of the press to malign the significant other of another player, Talbot was on radio being prodded by the show’s host. He also doesn’t have priors like Avery. The situations aren’t all that similar.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I agree. It’s a “Max who” moment for him. Maybe the Pens need Max to be their new PR guy since he’s so good at getting his name out there.
I’m not sure why so many are insulted that Ovi didn’t fly back to the States for this little PR affair—if the league wanted him there for PR purposes then they wouldn’t have scheduled it in July. This is definitely a Pens-centric thing—no need to take the spotlight off of Sid, tho’ Talbot tried his best.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Really? Max who?
you mean the same Talbot with 2 goals (including GWG) in Game 7 SCF? Yeah . . . he’s never accomplished anything
I’m a Pens fan and still find it pretty silly and immature. Not what the league wants to promote what should be a great event for the game.
by chicos_pants on Jul 28, 2010 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
Not saying he hasn’t stepped it up big at key moments for the Pens—that’s the job of a good role player. But Ovi doesn’t need to respond, even if he’s aware of Talbot’s PR debacle—that was my point.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. Said this yesterday, but that means that Max Talbot is just as great as Ruslan Fedotenko, Frantisek Kaberle, or Chris Phillips Travis Moen.
Would you take Talbot’s Game 7 in 2009 (or Fedotenko in ‘04, etc etc) over any one of Ovechkin’s NHL games?
That’s the point.
But no, Ovechkin doesn’t need to respond, no one really needs to anymore.

Chicos... really?
Are you still relying upon a fluke event that happened two years ago? What has the Talbotman done lately? If you’re pointing to his 2 goals and 7 points in 45 games played last season, I think you’re bragging about a 4th liner… and more likely a scratch.
Also, two goals in SCF from low-tier talent is not something to brag about, it’s more of an indictment of your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lines not being able to do their job. Moot point anyway because people weren’t commenting on his lack of quality on the ice, but rather that Ovechkin doens’t even need to acknowledge his idiotic rantings.
"Baseball was my first love... hockey is a sultry temptress and stole my heart." - Corey Masisak
Hooks summed it up nicely, but...
in a game where Talbot owned the scoring for much of play and Datsyuk, Hossa, Zetterberg, Franzen combined to scored exactly none, let’s focus on the deficient top Pens lines. Not to mention a heavily favored veteran Detroit team playing on home ice.
Send me a postcard if the Caps ever win a cup and you’re still disastisfied with it because of the stat line.

You folks ever see the “press conferences” to announce a big-ticket fight? It’s all marketing, folks. Talbot goes on a local radio show. He wan’t there because all of Pittsburgh was interested in what he was up to this summer. He was there to promote a product. Squeeze some juice into this thing. GEt the home folks fired up (as much as they can be a few days before Steelers camp starts).
Will the Caps respond in kind? Let’s wait and see…

He did, but that might have been his only one.
"It's always good to have vikings."

Buried deep at the end of this article lies a hint:
Highlights of a skills competition involving players trying to shoot a puck through the football field uprights: Sidney Crosby starting 0 for 4, including a misfire that blasted a Steelers helmet, before connecting from 60 yards; Pascal Dupuis intentionally firing his first shot from 40 yards into a hockey net at the 20-yard line; and David Steckel’s mostly successful rainbow shots that forced Max Talbot of the Penguins to declare him “the man.”
In English or in French, Maxime? It’s all so very difficult.

Finally
http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=535019
In an unofficial tally of the scores, the players finished as follows: Talbot (0 for 5); Dupuis (1 for 5); Crosby (2 for 6); Knuble (1 for 4); and Steckel (2 for 4).
Knuble started the competition off by netting the first shot right down the middle, setting the tone for the event.
"The key to that was Mike Knuble putting one through on the first shot," Steckel said. "I think the pressure was on because we didn’t want to look like fools out there."
There were a few comical moments during the contest. One of Dupuis’ shots landed into the hockey goal set up a few yards away, and Crosby sent a shot that skipped on the grass and clanked off of a Steelers helmet that had been placed on the ground for aesthetic purposes.
Crosby put a great capper on the competition. The other four players all missed on their shots from the farthest distance on the field, the far blue line. Crosby, however, whipped his best shot and sent the puck just inside the left upright.
All that was missing was two referees to raise their arms under the goal post and signal that the shot was "good."
"I think it could have been a lot longer day for me, but luckily I got one in there," Crosby said. "If I hadn’t gotten one then I would have been there for a long time until I did."

I kid. In all seriousness, Talbot will definitely have to keep his head up. I doubt they’ll ever be on the ice very much at the same time, but when they are, I’m sure Ovie will be hunting him down.
Or he’ll just crush him with his wallet.
I suspect the only involvement of a wallet is going to be the “ow” Talbot’s says after Ovi makes him land on it six times in their next meeting.

I agree JP. If Ovi biggest worry while playing the Pens next season is how to get back at Talbot for what he said yesterday, then we are in trouble. He should just ignore him and concentrate on winning the game(s). Game losses, I imagine, would be a lot more painful to Talbot than any hits from Ovi.

The best revenge would be if the Caps could set a team record for most goals in a game against Pittsburgh at the Winter Classic. RIght now, their best effort against the Pens happened on a New Years day about 20 years ago, when they hung an 8-0 loss on the Pens at Landover.

But I think Ovi is a hell of lot smarter. And better with the press. And better with the quips. And doesn’t resort to calling someone douchy. He keeps his trash talk on the games. He actually is very careful about what he says to the media. Ovi’s unfiltered and honest, but not stupid. And when’s out of words he says “it is what it is,” a nice dose of Russian fatalism.

Hence the word “think”—it’s only an opinion. But I formed mine on the basis of what he says to the media and I believe Ovi is pretty savvy—even with a few dark Olympic moments. It’s been a rough media year for Ovi—even more so in his native land than here—and he’s come through pretty intact.
There are many ways of measuring intelligence, and for a guy speaking in a second language I usually find him quite articulate and nuanced in his statements. I prefer translations of his Russian interviews because he is more expansive, and find Ovi’s comments both funny and perceptive, as well as laced with fascinating metaphorical and fatalistic flights of literary fancy.

Wonder if GMGM was waiting for Flash to re-sign before making any UFA moves, and whether we see any UFA signings now.
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Knowing that GMGM keeps his cards close to the vest, it’s impossible to tell, isn’t it? I’m inclined to think he may stand pat and enjoy all that cap room and let at least a portion of the regular season accurately determine the team’s needs.
by mechanicsville on Jul 28, 2010 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Let me help him out: one more dependable NHL defenseman. And a legit second-line center.
Didn’t take me half a season to figure that out (well, actually it sorta did… but that half a season was last year).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I get that part. The positional needs are pretty clear, aren’t they? I’m wondering, though, if McPhee may like to see how Perrault and Mackan (as well as #14) perform their roles before pulling the trigger in free agency. I’m not sure it’s incumbent that he act b/t now and the start of the regular season.
by mechanicsville on Jul 28, 2010 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, though I think that might have more to do with the available supply than his personal demand.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
If the Caps break camp with the two rookies manning the second and third line center spots, McPhee hasn’t done his job. One, probably Mackan, I can live with but teams with Stanley Cup aspirations don’t put two rookies in those crucial positions.
But the Stanley Cup Playoff rosters aren’t locked in on October 8.

Not to mention that our 2C just signed last night, so we don’t need the two rookies to be 2C and 3C.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Will anyone be surprised at all to see Flash occupy 2C for at least 25 games this season? Hopefully management will recognize that there are deep fundamental issues with that solution despite the fact that they’ll be winning a lot of regular season games no matter who is at 2C.
There’s nothing any of us can do about it but sit back and watch. And throw things at the TV.
Isn’t it rather more important to see with whom they finish the season?
by mechanicsville on Jul 28, 2010 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions
In theory, sure. My concern is that making significant trades during the season is becoming more and more difficult. First, there’s the salary cap which can restrict what teams can do in makiing trades. More importantly, and we saw it last season, because of parity more teams are staying in the playoff hunt a lot longer so there are far more buyers than sellers. And the few teams that are sellers can drive up the price for their players so McPhee will have to overpay to get what he needs. Finally, there’s also the problem of chemistry and working players into a high octane system like the Caps play late in the season. It’s kind of like going on a trip and assuming you’ll find a good hotel when you arrive. You might but you could also end up in a hostel. I’d rather do the research before I leave and know what I’ve got before I get on the plane.
No doubt it’s hard to argue with your logic. Two things prevail right now for me. First, there’s a dearth of quality centers out there right now, so I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to “settle”. The Caps can begin the season with the current roster and consider themselves a very good team. That’s a strong position and possibly allows a couple of the young guys time to gain experience (and hopefully give GMGM time to find more quality trade options).
by mechanicsville on Jul 28, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, there’s no top #2C out there barring a major trade. As I said, I’ve got no problem trying Mackan in that spot since the Caps seem to be so high on him. But there are some viable #3C options available as UFAs with Belanger among them. If he’s willing to come down from that 3-4 year deal his agent wants, he could be a good two-year option at a reasonable price.
As unsavory as it may be right now for some of us Caps fans, I think we may have to ready ourselves to see Flash pencilled in at 2C with Mackan, MP, Aucoin(?) competing for 3C. If this is what the depth chart resembles, I’m not sure where Belanger fits.
by mechanicsville on Jul 28, 2010 10:04 AM EDT up reply actions
I believe that McPhee has his eye on certain players outside the system for the holes, and may well be in off-and-on discussions.
I was surprised last year when I read that he had ongoing discussions about the Chimera/Clark trade since before the season had started.
With Flash signed for a not-so-scary fee and term, McPhee has time and cap space. Committing to Flash for just one year suggests to me that McPhee is under no illusions about his strengths and weaknesses but he now has a tradable asset.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. by Gin and Tonic on Jul 28, 2010 9:21 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Roughly four times as much, if they continue to bank that much all season, since you’d only be paying ~1/4 of an acquired player’s salary.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

So according to Tarik, Flash will be a UFA next summer. Given that, is he really all that tradeable? How much demand will there be for him as a rental, versus if he were still RFA next offseason?
He’s still relatively young and relatively cheap. The demand for him will depend upon how he plays. Of course, that’ll also likely determine just how available he is.
If I had to bet, Fleischmann ends the season as a Cap and is either re-signed because he stepped up his game or cut loose because he didn’t (of course, “re-signed despite not stepping up his game” is another option).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I suspect that no matter how he plays this year that he won’t be a Cap going into next year…..though he probably will finish the season in DC. Either he screws the pooch and is let go or he steps up his game and prices himself out of DC. Like so many have mentioned before…the Caps have bigger fish to fry following this season.
But if he steps up his game AND Alex Semin proves himself unsignable, Flash could still be in the mix.

hmmm. i think he’s gone. he has not performed in the playoffs for this team…5 points in 22 NHL playoff games and a healthy scratch in two of the four series the team has played in the past three years. i think this team can win without his offensive contributions.
if he kicks ass this year then he’s gonna demand more cash as a potential UFA than this team would want or need to spend on him. he also raises his trade value…perhaps he gets moved along w/ a prospect to a team out of the playoff picture in exchange for a veteran UFA who can help in the post season.

i believe i’m going to get a pony for christmas, but since that hasnt happened yet i’m going to conclude that it never will…
seriously though, thats what makes it a tough call. if you keep this guy and he lays another egg in the playoffs, you probably missed an opportunity to turn him into another asset that could have helped. and if you sign him mid-season and he lays that egg, well that can hurt you going into an offseason with many guys to re-up. of course, if he kicks ass in the playoffs then you probably are going to be unable to resign him and keep other guys in the fold.

Yeah. I don’t love it, but I can deal with it. It’s way better than the 3+ he would have gotten in arb.
Would love to see him traded. It won’t happen.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
As I understand it, arbitration is an emotionally taxing process for both the player and the organization reps. Imagine having to hear a brutally honest assessment of your talent and worth spelled out in meticulous detail. Perhaps Flash could have pulled down 3+ in arbitration, but I imagine he is just as happy to avoid it altogether.

I concur
Was still hoping we’d give him $2,199,999.99, but I’ll take $2.6 to be done with it. Plus twas fun to see DMG try to justify not low-ball the ever-loving crap out of Flash.

Actually, I was a little surprised that nobody took a real golf swing at it yesterday. I know even less about golf (like nothing) than I do about hockey, but I’d think that it would put more lift in the whack at the puck. Or break the hockey stick.

Washington Capitals have traded for DJ King from the St Louis Blues, per Jeff Marek.

Gotta be an AHL pickup, he’s listed as an LW and the guy only played 12 games last season and only saw 4:30 of ES ice during those games. What was the return?

He played 61 games in ‘06-’07, though. He had a shoulder injury in ‘08-’09 that limited him to one game, and he only pllayed 10 games last year due to a hand injury that sidelined him for a while.
Yeah, he’s suited up for the Blues quite a few times.

Haven’t heard yet. He’s not really a hockey player, he’s more of a guy who’s good at having his face beat in.

Yeah, he’s not a bad fighter, but that’s all he is.

Quick view from the 314 —
He’s a guy who really couldn’t crack the NHL lineup on a regular basis. Blues’ coaches preferred Jannssen over him (no snickering please). I think CB’s characterization is generally right.
Fact is that the Blues don’t need both King and Jannssen, so it makes sense that one would go.
I’m hoping the Caps didn’t give up much and thinking it’s unlikely he cracks the Caps lineup to start the season.

Thanks! Much obliged. Soon as we hear, we’ll try to tell you what we know about what you got. I expect our analysis to be “we hope that draft pick is really late in that round”

I’d have preferred T.J.
DJ King — league minimum salary. He played 12 games in the NHL and 10 in the A last year because of injuries.
In 101 career NHL games, he has 9 points and 185 PIMs.
I hope it’s for Hershey.

Why does Hershey need a fighter? Or Washington, for that matter?

FWIW – The FanPost on St. Louis Game Time is priceless:
According to an Andy Strickland tweet, DJ King has been traded to the Washington Capitals:
“The Blues have traded tough guy D.J. King to the Washington Capitals…expect an announcement soon”
Talbot…looks like the Capitals just got Ovechkin a tiny bit of protection there, bud.
Be interesting to see what we get in return. Ovechkin? Nah…I somehow don’t think so….
At least King is in the Eastern Conference – I’d have hated seeing him up against us a few times a season.
Take away — 1) love the snarkiness about OV and 2) interesting comments about getting King out of the West.
FYI — King agreed to a 2-year contract extension already. Comes with the trade.

Oh – and Jeremy Rutherford, the Blues beat writer for the Post-Dispatch calls King an “enforcer” in his latest tweet.

I have my doubts that he’s headed for Hershey, because he’s on a one way deal, IIRC – not like McPhee would pay him 500k + to protect Francis Bouchard.

I was hopeful it was two-way, but after seeing Rutherford’s comment, it must be a one-way.
I can’t imagine a veteran would sign a 2-year, 2-way contract.

I know, thats why the trade is confusing. I can’t imagine any NHL GM playing a one way deal guy in the minors.
