Tuesday Caps Clips: Winter Classic Presser
Your savory breakfast links:
- Japers' Rink Radio has completed its summer hiatus and returns to the interwaves on a new night and time tonight at 8pm to talk Caps hockey. Ed Frankovic returns as special JRR guest. [Blog Talk Radio]
- The countdown to the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic begins today with a press conference and presentation at noon at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. Doc Emrick will emcee as the official Winter Classic logo and mockup of the rink configuration are unveiled. [NHL.com]
- In addition, the host Penguins and visiting Capitals are expected to reveal their WC "retro" logos, though not the actual game sweaters. - Nicklas Backstrom's report card from last season and a look ahead. [Crash the Crease]
- Pocket Ovie. Really! [Jumping the Glass]
- Get to know new Stingrays/Bears goalie Jared DiMichiel. [Flashy Glove Save]

- The folks who cover the Hershey Bears have an invitation for you. [PennLive]
- And the Stingrays may have a job for you. [Stingrays Hockey]
- What is the best moment in Caps' history? [Capitals Outsider]
- Another alum of the Caps organization makes it to the Hall of Fame. Bruce Hamilton, the former Caps chief of western scouting and current president and general manager of the Kelowna Rockets, has been elected to the British Columbia HoF as testament to a long and distinguished career. [BCLocalNews]
- Finally, happy 41st birthday to Jason Woolley and happy 64th to winless-as-a-Cap goalie (though he's no Michal Belhumeur) John Adams.

One time only – back to normal on Saturday, which should be an amazing show as Don Fishman will join the guys, fresh off the Flash arb hearing and subsequent… well, who knows?

Fishman should be a great guest. I wonder how candid he will be about the hearing and the outcome. How much of the arbitration process do you think he can discuss in a public setting?

We’ll see if Pepper can go all Frost-Nixon on Fishman and get him to spill his secrets. The public has a right to know.

"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

For anyone so inclined, NHL.com is probably streaming the press conference, too. So you can work and ignore the Penguins talk and then pay attention to the five minutes they give the Caps.

It could be worse, they could’ve canceled the 5 minutes the Caps get for a 5 minute long closeup of Crosby.

True – like you said this is a Pittsburgh event.
I’m sure it’ll be dull no matter who’s there. Let’s just see the logos, look at a rink configuration in Heinz Field and hear how all the players are “excited” and “honored” to play in this classic.

the confluence of many story lines makes that play so great…
-historic comeback by a team not noted for playoff success, much less in OT
-against a hated rival who used to come into that building and take our lunch money…litterally..
-goal scored by a guy not necessarily noted for breakaway speed and scoring
-against a goalie we all love to hate
-seeing mike keenan’s sour puss have to walk across the ice (nice braces) to shake hands..
one thing i never noticed in that clip is that scott stevens almost took that puck from murph and skated into the defensive zone. not sure if he overskated or murph called him off, but that was key.
before backs in game 2 this year, i think that was the last (and only?) home playoff OT win….

Frolov to Rags?
Don’t you know how people are treated in the NHL? If a player has a year left on his contract it is necessary to spoil his season in order not to sign him for big money. That’s what happened with Frolov.

I didn’t have any trouble understanding any of you.
And I’m with you on Bergeron. They are going to have to dump someone why not him? Oh, how I love that Tim Thomas contract.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
He does seem to be the most likely option for a trade, given the relative cost/length of contract and the fact that they have eleventy billion centers.
I just don’t know how they do it, though. This is the guy who was supposed to be the face of the franchise after Thornton left, there are going to be some pissed off Bruins fans (…heh) if he gets traded.
There are three ways that they get rid of salary.
1) They buy out Michael Ryder. He has one year left on his contract at $4M a year, he doesn’t have an NMC, and he’d be a good fit for some team that needs a scoring wing, but it’s a tough sell at that salary. Buying him out saves them 2.67 million worth of cap space this year (though it adds 1.333 mil worth of cap space next year) and opens up a slot for Tyler Seguin on the right wing.
2) They demote Ryder. They have to pay his salary in Providence, but they only pay it for one year and don’t have to worry about the cap hit.
3) Marco Sturm starts the season on LTIR. This gives them an additional 3.5 million in cap space to work with at the top of the season, and when he is ready to come back, the team can worry about demoting Ryder, trading Ryder (if he starts the season hot and looks like a value for some other team), or trying to convince Sturm to waive his NTC.
I really doubt Bergeron will be traded. In fact, I would guess he’s going to get an extension some time before the middle of the season unless he’s really stinking up the joint.
Good thing they gave Tim Thomas all that money and a NMC.

Blaine Lacher
Jim Carey
Byron Dafoe
Andrew Raycroft
Am I forgetting anyone in the list of Bruins one-hit-wonder goalies? Tim Thomas didn’t put up Vezina-caliber numbers last year, but he did make 43 starts and he did have a 2.56 GAA and a .915 save percentage. It wasn’t like he stunk it up in net last year; he was just playing for a team that lost a lot of 2-1/3-2 games.
My bold prediction for next year: Tuukka Rask joins Lacher, Carey, Dafoe, and Raycroft on the list of Boston goalie flameouts.
Dafoe wasn’t awesome, but he was decent in LA for a year or two. But then again, after Boston there wasn’t much in him.

My point was more that the goalie job in Boston has been a constant oscillation between “Rookie Saviour is Here to Save Us” followed by “Sophmore Slumper is being Sent Out of Town on a Rail.”
Oh, and of course, how could I forget Hannu Toivonen?
Hannu Toivonen was always a highly touted prospect, but never did anything in the NHL, so he doesn’t really fit this trend.

I don’t think they touch Ryder. I think they like him too much and he had a decent (ish) year for them last year. I think he’s way overrated and way overpaid but for whatever reason they don’t seem to agree – not that I mind.
Plus I think they really want Seguin at center, I don’t see him moving to wing despite some reports to the contrary.

Isn’t it obvious that about 18 steps and 5 years before the NHL even considers moving the team, there would be a legal challenge to the constitutionality of taxing all of someone’s wages? Why not just stick to how stupid the tax is, and leave out the Balsillie talking points?

Like iwearstripes, I was into the tax part. Pretty sneaky way to raise revenue in a state with no income tax. When you call it a fee, you screw everyone. The teams/league really should pay it on behalf of the players. And all the Tennessee teams really should get together and lobby more strongly.

I’m somewhat dumbfounded that there are states with no income tax. How do they expect to raise revenue? Seems like an utterly illogical system.

The obvious solution is to have the NHLPA, or the NHL put in a call to some leader of the state government (not the governor, but maybe the speaker of the house or equivalent). I’, sure a good argument could be made where if they feel this tax is necessary, they can find a way to allocate it in a more reasonable manner.

Talbot throws the first salvos
On a Pittsburgh morning radio show (following tweets from Zach)
On Ovechkin: “He’s a douche”
On WC: “I’m a big Steeler fan so playing at Heinz Field is going to be special.”
On playing the Caps: “They play with such exciting pace. The only opponent that would be better would be Philly”
On Gonchar: “I could never say anything bad about him. He called me an hour after he signed and said he was sorry he couldn’t stay.”
“Gonchar is such a great guy. I am asking Pens fans to treat him with respect.” (1/2)
Benz: “No whooping like Wash?” Max: “Oh god that sounds terrible down there. Yeah don’t do that please.” (2/2)

I’m hearing that was exactly what you were saying…but see, you used fewer words and so I got confused. :)
But yeah, my guess is some Pens fan decided to be funny and gave our pal Hooks bad info. No way did he call any other player a douche when it could be repeated and reprinted and could get back to the guy.

I’m not raising up an army against Talbot for saying it, and I’m not calling for any sort of retribution against him. I just think it was moronic to say and a classless thing to do in the media.
Come on, you can’t honestly tell me that there’s not a difference between stuff that might get tossed around in the locker room and stuff that gets said in the media. We want these guys to show personality, sure, and a good quote is a good quote, but isn’t there a line somewhere of things you just don’t say?
isn’t there a line somewhere of things you just don’t say?
Yes. Absolutely. And for each person that line is different, and that’s what makes things interesting.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
The only line he “crossed” is that he was dumb enough to say it on a radio show. If Mike Green says the same thing about say, Jordan Staal, the same folks who are feigning outrage now would say “I LOVE that guy!”
And I thought Tom Soehn was a shitty coach.
by Bald Pollack on Jul 27, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
…no, I’d think it was a stupid and classless move. I’m sorry, maybe we each have to define what our own “line” is but I think going from saying you don’t like a guy to saying he’s a douche is crossing that line.
Interesting, btw, that a lot of the women seem to side with me on this and a lot of you men are just shrugging it off…
And again, he crossed that line only because he was dumb enough to say it on a radio show.
Look, if you guys are trash talking and calling each other names at WPS and WNBA games, I’d like to hear it, and if you want to go down the male-female athlete dynamics that’s a whole other discussion, but this isn’t nothing more than a stupid opportunity which is going to sell more tickets than it already will.
And I thought Tom Soehn was a shitty coach.
by Bald Pollack on Jul 27, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions
It has nothing to do with male vs. female athletes. Of course females call each other names in the middle of a game, and I’m sure they say nasty things in the locker room. I’m saying a lot of men on here seem to be okay with it being said publicly, through the media.
And honestly if someone wasn’t going to buy a ticket to the WC and buys one just because of this they should be stripped of their credit cards and forced to run naked across the ice at intermission. This won’t do anything but drum up slightly more media attention for something that was already going to get plenty.
I’m saying a lot of men on here seem to be okay with it being said publicly, through the media.
Because what Max says on the “Dufus and McGee in the Morning” show has no bearing on how and where the team I root for does this year. I’m kinda wacky like that.
And I thought Tom Soehn was a shitty coach.
by Bald Pollack on Jul 27, 2010 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
I think that’s a little unfair. I wouldn’t stop rooting for the Caps if Mike Green said something so moronic, and I’m not letting it do anything to my perception of this game or the Pens as a team. All I’m saying is that it’s lowered my regard for Talbot as a person. I think that’s the difference.
I could go into a long spiel about male fans vs. female fans but my general theory is that how a guy acts off the ice is much more important to a woman in picking players to root for than it is to a guy. And I think this just feeds into that theory more (although I’m sure there are dissenters on both sides of the gender line around here, which is fine).
I could go into a long spiel about male fans vs. female fans but my general theory is that how a guy acts off the ice is much more important to a woman in picking players to root for than it is to a guy.
Maybe. I know I couldn’t possibly care less about any aspect of any Capitals off-ice life beyond how it impacts their on-ice player unless it’s something real extreme like doing a ton of charity work or committing (serious) crimes.

That’s where I’d disagree. If they said it (or anything like it), there would be some bashful head-ducking for a few days before moving on. The fact that it was said about “our guy” is cause for a lot of the indignation, IMHO.
We’re talking about guys who go to 17k seat arenas for 9 months out of the year and we ask them to be primal. We ask for goals and we ask for victory. If they use a bad word in a meaningless interview, it’s a forgivable sin to me.

Sorry I’m with Becca on this. It’s all about timing for me. Talbot wants to create controversy by saying this about our best player and archrival of Crosby’s on the radio just before the big press conference about the Winter Classic highlighting the big game between the two teams.
Of course it was a deliberate statement made just before a big NHL event and will therefore get picked up by the national medial. It’s not just a casual trash talking statement before a big game between the two clubs.
I usually take the stupid stuff players say with a grain of salt and much meh, but this was stupid and crass and unnecessary. Can you imagine the kind of shit-storm the Caps would get if one of our players said such crap at such a moment.
I was in a great mood, excited by the idea of the Classic even if the Caps are the afterthought, and now I’m angry and using foul language, not my norm at all.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. Not that it was caught on a microphone but that it was caught on a microphone the day the league is trying to promote its biggest game of the regular season. Last time I checked it’s called the Winter Classic not the Max Talbot Classic. You’re a third liner. Here’s your job description. Sit on the podium, smile and when someone asks you a question say how great the game’s going to be. Most importantly, keep your personal opinions about the opposing star to yourself. That’s what pros do.
Isn’t that precisely the boring stuff that everyone was complaining about earlier? Can’t have it both ways.
Talbot took a needless shot at the end, but I appreciate his honesty if he doesn’t like a guy to say so. Better than giving a white lie or brushing it off. Granted, he maybe didn’t need to say as much as he did in the manner he did, but he’s certainly not the only NHL player to think the same.

If he said it about Richards on a NHL press day for a Winter Classic between the Pens and the Flyers, I would still call it classless and designed to cause a media controversy to get everyone stirred up.
But I wouldn’t be personally annoyed because I’m not a Flyers fan. I would just think it was stupid and unnecessary. In an objective way.

Slightly, especially since it is based on little interaction, but more importantly, I hate when players use the media to trash other players. Some things shouldn’t be for public consumption. A critique is fine. Crosby’s “like it or lump it” is fine. This crosses the line. I’m quite proud that current Caps aren’t known for this behavior.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
Talbot is fine. If you want to make sure everyone is clean then you end up with a boring league. +1 to Talbot for not having a filter. I wish more athletes would do that. The overreaction is exactly why Crosby so often says a whole lot of scripted nothing.

That’s just an excerpt. Listen to the whole interview. He trashed Ovi from beginning to end. Seriously, what normal thinking person does something like that on the day the NHL is trying to generate a ton of positive press?
The league wants press period. This type of press is great. It’s really not negative, but it does get people excited about a rivalry which typically translates to eyeballs.

Probably the closest a Cap has come (ShaMo):
“Well, I don’t like him ‘cause he’s on Pittsburgh,” Morrisonn said. “On a national stage, I’m not gonna comment. But you know, for our team, I definitely dislike the Penguins and Sidney Crosby. I’m not gonna take anything away from him, he’s a great player, but I think we’ve got the best player in the world here with Alex.”
At the end of the segment, the hosts tried again, virtually pleading with Mo to use the H word. He laughed.
“I don’t know if I can say that,” he said. “I dislike Sidney Crosby. I play against him, he’s not on my team.”

Still waiting for Sasha's 100 pt season...
What’s so special about [Crosby]? I don’t see anything special there. Yes, he does skate well, has a good head, good pass. But there’s nothing else. Even if you compare him to Patrick Kane from Chicago … [Kane] is a much more interesting player. The way he moves, his deking abilities, his thinking on the ice and his anticipation of the play is so superb.
I think that if you take any player, even if he is “dead wood,” and start promoting him, you’ll get a star. Especially if he scores 100 points. No one is going to care about anyone else. No one is going to care whether he possesses great skill. Let’s say you put someone in front of the net and let him deflect pucks in, and he scored 50 goals; everyone will say “Wow!” and then hand him a $10 million per year contract. That’s what they like here.

That he says this in the same breath as saying Crosby isn’t special and only has good skating, " good head" and good pass doesn’t seem to register?
And that he goes on to mention that promoting a player and giving him a big salary can translate into making a star in America? (Two things Crosby has). No correlation? Nothing?

I think it can be read as: “Sid isn’t special. Look, you could take any player and promote him and make him a star, especially if he piles up big points. You could take a piece of dead wood and do it. So just because a guy has points and stardom doesn’t mean he’s particularly special, and I don’t find Sid to be special.”
Essentially, the “dead wood” is the hyperbole used to make the point, and Sid falls somewhere on the spectrum between dead wood and a real special player.
I don’t think you’d be reacting this way if he said it about Mike Richards.

I see what you’re saying though — I debate the logic of the argument. Since 100+ point players are inherently pretty special if they’re good enough to score that much, as KC says below.
And Semin’s comments have been proven wrong by merit – like Sid’s Rocket Richard Trophy, leading the playoffs in goals, scoring OT gold medal winners, etc. Crosby’s been undoubtedly been hyped, but Semin seems to think there’s no substance.
If that’s the case, out of my own curiosity, I’d like to hear Semin’s assessment of his own game and skills.
I don’t think you’d be reacting this way if he said it about Mike Richards.

I think Semin sees a big difference between production and skills (as discussed below). I’m sure he favors a Datsyuk over a Crosby, for example, because he can dangle. Semin wants the game to be beautiful because he can play the game beautifully. He doesn’t seem to realize, of course, that that doesn’t mean dick at the end of the day.

But Semin is a devoted to creative, beautiful hockey. And just because someone wins things doesn’t mean that person does creative, beautiful hockey. Let’s be honest, Crosby isn’t the most beautiful or creative hockey player on the planet.

It depends what your definition of beauty is.
Is it skating back and forth behind the net, to burn Jason Spezza, make a nice pass for a goal?
Or is it dangling between soemone’s legs like Datsyuk might do and snipe?
To say Crosby isn’t a creative player is ridiculous. It may not be as purely skilled as even what Semin shows in flashes, but it doesn’t mean he has no skill.

#savethekittens!
Donation info for SAVES FOR KIDS 2010!! Make a difference.
I’d disagree there, I think it’s just a different kind of creative and “beauty”. A guy like Semin has all the technical skills to make amazing things happen. Crosby doesn’t have that, but the way he can anticipate plays at times and make some of the passes he does is quite impressive – almost a form of artistry, the same way a soccer team breaking down an opponent to get a chance an be “beautiful” even if no one does anything that’s amazing from a technical standpoint.

I still take exception to saying/implying Crosby isn’t as creative or can’t create as beautiful goals as the ones Semin likes (the more Russian/European style). Any quick search of a Crosby youtube highlight reel will show you interesting goals, assuming you watch the hockey and not the player.
Great passes (which Semin acknowledges), sliding one-leg goals, sick backhands, leg kicks to deke goalies, etc.

I always wondered if the “dead wood” comment was a literal translation or just a substitute metaphor used by the translator. I remember in one of the Ovechkin interviews that Tuvan translated, he noted that the expression Ovi used had no English equivalent, so he substituted “nailing jello to a tree” or something to that effect. Perhaps this is a similar circumstance.

Here’s a translation of the same quote by tuvanhillbilly:
"To be honest, I don’t see anything like that in Crosby" said Semin, discussing the style of play of different NHL hockey players. "What is it in him that is special? Yes, he skates well, he has a sharp mind, and he makes outstanding passes. I don’t like to make comparisons. But if you look at others… it seems to me that Chicago’s Patrick Kane is a much more interesting guy."
"You can put a spin on any player, even the most lumbering one. If he makes 100 points in a season everyone will be beating the drum, whether or not what he does on the ice is highly skilled. He could stand in front of the crease during the power play and knock in 50 goals from there and everyone would say "Now that is a real forward!", and they will offer him a $10 million annual contract. This is what they value in the NHL."
"But in Russia we value things differently. We love graceful hockey, not this dump and chase. I have never understood players who do this. Why would you do this when nobody is forechecking? Why fight for the puck and crash into the boards? This is just not my style."

I also interpreted the comments culturally as highlighting the difference between European and North American styles of goals, that is Crosby’s goals are so often in and around the crease whereas Semin does love his pretty goals.

I think it’s interesting to follow up Semin’s logic on this. He seems to suggest that just anyone can score 50 goals or 100 pts in a season, that doesn’t make them a special talent. So why doesn’t he do either? This reinforces the belief that many have that Semin thinks it’s not worth winning if you can’t win pretty.

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
I’d agree. But there is more to being a special player than just high skill levels and pretty play. In today’s game ordinary players don’t put up 50 goals/100 points. Skill is not the be all end all of success in hockey (as an individual or a team), and I’m not sure Semin gets that. Come playoff time I’d rather see more deadwood in front tipping in goals than Semin’s pretty play of the last couple playoff series.

It’s a bizarre habit…he used to play here, let’s whoop him. It’s something fans in other places are right to question.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
But it has nothing to do with just being a former Cap. As I hear it told (and I think there are a few versions of this floating around, this is just one interpretation) it’s because of Larry Murphy, who had a tendency to have the puck hop over his stick at the blue line – you know, “whoops!” And then it was passed on to Gonchar as someone with similar tendencies.
I just like it because it’s a sign of people knowing the history – I’m sure not everyone who does it gets it or knows why they’re doing it but other fans in other buildings have similar quirks that are beloved inside, mocked outside.
Yeah, but it was a selective choice because people didn’t like that Murphy wasn’t “physical” (you know, the original Sarge). I saw every Caps home game from 77-97. Not every Dman was Langway or Stevens, and even they made mistakes, believe me. People on here have told me they whoop every ex-Cap they can. I’ll continue to mock the habit from the inside.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
Selective or not, it was a specific player-related trait that led to the whooping – and I don’t remember it ever being applied to any other former Cap until Gonchar came along. Mock it if you want, and that’s certainly your right – and yes, there are those who will (wrongly, imo) do it to every former Cap – but there’s at least a historical reason for it.
…and yes, I know that Langway and Stevens and every defenseman ever to wear a Caps jersey has made mistakes.
IMO it’s just people, many with no first-hand knowledge, perpetuating an unjust stereotype.
It’s all wrong, but it’s all right.
And IMO I think it’s funny…it’s sports, when you take yourself too seriously it’s no longer fun. I don’t think Murph’s crying into his Cup ring (or Gonch, for that matter) because of it. No harm, no foul – but obviously everyone’s welcome to their opinion.
As I hear it told (and I think there are a few versions of this floating around, this is just one interpretation) it’s because of Larry Murphy, who had a tendency to have the puck hop over his stick at the blue line – you know, "whoops!" That logo for the Penguins did not appear on a jersey, but it was the first logo for the club. According to the folks at pittsburghhockey.net …
After a few weeks of brainstorming in his Mt. Washington studio, [Pittsburgh freelance artist Bob] Gessner narrowed his focus to the mascot that is slightly different than what the team has on their sweaters today.
The first logo featured a skating penguin with a scarf holding a hockey stick in front of a golden triangle emblematic of the city’s Golden Triangle.
The team’s official colors changed at the last minute from black and white to black and gold, and that drew the ire of the Boston Bruins, who claimed the colors were owned by the Bruins.
"How the hell can you own a color?" Gessner protested at the time. "Red, white and blue were colors used by several teams. Why couldn’t we wear the same colors as the Bruins?"
The new expansion Penguins team deferred to the established Boston club and agreed on a Columbia blue, navy blue and white color scheme.

yeah, I hear you. You’ve seen me, I’m somewhat tall and athletically built, and the small is going to be oversized on me. And there are a lot of female fans who are quite a bit smaller than me, I can’t imagine getting one of those jackets if you’re 5’2" and 100 pounds.
The jackets look nice, but I’m a little disappointed in the whole size kerfluffle.

Talked to my rep today and expressed my thoughts too. He understood, but said it would have been too difficult to carry too many sizes. Not at all comforting. I’m actually more confused about the sizing since I spoke with him than I was before.
It’s based on measurements :)
Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity.
Yes, I got that; however, my rep indicated he tried a large on, but couldn’t tell me what size suit coat he wore. I was trying to get an idea of size for purchasing an additional jacket for my son. My rep also suggested I check some stores that sell similar jackets for more sizing assistance. The Reebok sizing I’ve found is more in line with what I’m used to: 39-40=M and 44=XL.

Couple things. First, Staal doesn’t have arb rights, and if he wants to get them, he needs to play another year. So at this point, his only real leverage is that another team might make him an offer sheet, which as we know is a rare occurrence. (It would be a nice way to screw up the Rangers, though).
Second, the Rags will almost certainly waive Brashear and one other guy…so they’ll be somewhat tight to the cap, but not over it.

So if he plays in the minors that’s fine even if he is 35+. What about if they loan him to a team in Europe? I’m not too sure about the rules on when a 35+ contract does or doesn’t stay on the books. Does it only stay if he stops playing all together?

Who would you rather have — Flash at $3M or Frolov at $3M. I don’t get to see enough of Frolov to have a good feel for him though he sounds a lot like a Semin or Flash in the bringing it every night/play soft dept. Flash can “play” center though I think I’d take Frolov because he has a couple of 30+ goal seasons and he’s not Flash. It also would be a decent tryout for a guy who potentially could fill Semin’s skates (at least somewhat) when Semin is likely gone next year.
My impression is that Frolov scores when he cares to, but doesn’t show up all the time, doesn’t play much defense, and is kind of sulky in the room. Dunno how accurate that is, of course. But if that’s what he is, I’d prefer to have neither he nor Flash, really.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
I don’t know either. And if that’s true (and you think the other Russians on the team and his bad experience with free agency won’t motivate him), neither is probably the right answer. I think my underlying point is, we’re going to pay Flash $3M? Ain’t there someone better still on the market who will take a one-year deal for that money? Frolov was the most obvious alternative but there’s gotta be someone. Or pay Willie Mitchell that money and let Andrew Gordon take Flash’s spot.
Frolov. Every time. Word on the street is Frolov has a 2 way game that has been improving.

If anyone cares (and it was getting cramped above) I listened to the Talbot interview on lunch, and it didn’t sound that inflammatory.
It starts out the hosts mention Ovechkin won’t be there, ask Talbot about it and he says he’s happy that Ovechkin won’t be there because he doesn’t like him. They push into why and he says it’s because when Malkin introduced Talbot to Ovechkin at the 2009 awards, something happened and Talbot thinks of Ovechkin as a douche. Talbot wouldn’t say what AO allegedly did.
Is it a little too far to call a competitor a “douche” on the radio? Maybe so, but it’s far from controversy, if you ask me. Talbot doesn’t like Ovechkin. BFD. 99% of Penguin players don’t like Capital players and vice versa, that this was said on the radio and not usually where they talk is not that big a deal to me.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
It’s not a big deal to me, either. Talbot’s got his own right to express his views.
I’m sure Ovechkin could care less, though.

Yeah speculation on the specifics. But Talbot certainly said that due to their interaction at that award ceremony is the reason why Talbot doesn’t like AO off the ice.
I guess only Malkin, Talbot, Ovechkin and whoever AO was standing by know for sure, and we’ll probably never know.
I’m holding out hope that Malkin indirectly confirms it again and that pisses Ovechkin off at Malkin all over again. Detente off!

Like I said above, I have no issue with Talbot not liking Ovie or even saying so on the radio. Who cares? He’s entitled to his opinions. It’s the one step further that he took – just say you don’t like the guy and move on, there’s no need to come out and call someone a douche in a public forum. Ovie’s said Sid talks to much, Sid has said he doesn’t like Ovie’s celebrations, fine.
I’m not even making THAT big a deal over it, I just think it’s a classless move and I’ve said so – because I’ve had to defend this opinion over and over people might think I’m calling for Talbot’s head, but I’m really not. I guess I just take issue with people telling me that it’s either boring, canned interviews or guys calling other guys “douches” in interviews. There’s a happy medium, no need to resort to tactics used by 10-year-olds (with the vocabulary of a 15-year-old).

I’m not offended by the word he used, but I’m sure I’d be offended if I heard some of what they say on the ice – I don’t hear it, though. What they say is between them and them alone, I’m sure Talbot’s called Ovie worse on the ice and I’m sure Ovie’s responded in kind. That’s fine.
I don’t have to like what they say and I know they’re probably saying it – I can certainly be madder at the behavior if it’s put forth for public consumption, though, and I consider this to be below the belt.

Randomly related — Talbot said it goes back to the 2009 awards show. So, might Talbot have done something during the 08-09 season (on or off the ice) that might have pissed off Ovi enough that he didn’t forget it?
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Perhaps be a member of the team that eliminated Ovie’s, go on to win a Cup, and see Ovie not too long after? If it were me, I’d have a hard time being nice too.
Yeah, but Ovi and Geno famously made up last year, so you’d think bringing Talbot over, he wasn’t expecting bad behavior. I was figuring something more than the Cup.
"It's always good to have vikings."
Proud member of the Oxford dictionary police.
Looks like Talbot got the memo and is trying to play nice. Also looks like Stecks and Knuble aren’t apppreciating it.
Given the chance to explain himself at Tuesday’s news conference, Talbot downplayed his comments.
“It’s always a big rivalry and whatever you say the other team is not going to like,” Talbot said. "He’s a great player but he’s not fun to play against. What can you say stir up a little intensity? “It was more about on-the-ice stuff than off the ice,” Talbot added. “You hate to play against him. That’s what I meant.”
Mike Knuble and David Steckel, who represented the Capitals at Heinz Field, weren’t convinced.
“It’s bulletin-board material,” Steckel said with a smirk, “and it’s not quite August yet.”
Knuble added: “It’s the end of July and somebody’s got to say something. It just adds to the rivalry. . . . I can’t imagine any of our players saying something like that about Sidney Crosby.” -Wa Post
I heart Knoobs. Although I think we should probably add “in public” to the end of this:
I can’t imagine any of our players saying something like that about Sidney Crosby.
But still – he’s right. And to be honest I couldn’t imagine many of their guys saying something like that (in public) about Ovie, either.
Mike seems like the kind of guy who probably let Talbot know he didn’t appreciate him talking about his Captain that way.

Talbot’s a unique character too; of all the Pens around I’m not surprised it’s him who said something like this. I don’t think it’s really that classless to say something in public, it’s an expression of how he felt and a way to use a strong word to get his point across. Was it necessary? No. Personally I wish he wouldn’t have been so open, no need to poke the bear and give Ovechkin or his teammates any more motivation.
Seriously, when have you ever – EVER – heard a hockey player refer to another hockey player in that kind of way in an interview?
I don’t have the time or energy to go through it now, but today is definitely not the first time a hockey player has publically called another a name.

If it’s happened – and obviously I’m not going to assume Talbot is such a trailblazer as to be the first, I shouldn’t have phrased it that way – it’s been a long time, and few and far between.
Besides which, there’s this mentality of “well, OTHERS have done it so it’s okay”. No, it’s not okay just because others have before, particularly not in other sports. One of the reasons I like hockey is that this kind of crap stays out of it – at least publicly. I have no delusions that they’re choirboys and don’t call each other names in more private moments. It’s much more rare in interviews, that’s my point.

I’m on board with everyone saying not to blow this stupidity out of proportion, and I’m not really inclined to listen to the interview, but in all fairness how would you feel if one of our role-playing guys called your star player a douche to the media in an interview on a WC press day for the two teams?
I will add that I would be criticizing our player for making such stupid comments in that scenario. Call me naive, call me a mom, but I’m not ever a huge fan of trash talk. Personally, I prefer the players to make their statements the ice.

Funny, since trash talk is a part of most sporting events to try and throw people off their games.

Agreed. But they aren’t playing right now. I said it elsewhere but I know Ovi and the others have said stuff on the ice. And stupid things directly to the media such as the “shaking hand” of Halak, which I thought unnecessary. Plus trash talk on the ice or at the time of the game has an immediate effect from the other player. Who is Talbot talking to right now? I think the public. Not the Caps players.

Bleh. I hate everything about Pittsburgh, including that bridge they’re so proud of.
-These go to eleven.
Actually I think it’s an excellent logo, with a good iconic image, references to Pittsburgh’s unique geography, and a subtle nod to the steel industry. Very well done IMO, and I’ll be pleased to own some WC merchandise.

Totally. I love that logo. I even (forgive me) like the Penguins logo. It’s very shinny, which is just right for an outdoor game.

I kind of love the little scarf, I think it’s very whimsical. And very anti-evil, which is kind of disturbing. He’s like “hey, it’s cold out, and my mama always told me to wear a scarf so I don’t get the sniffles!”
The penguin with the scarf = awesome.

Does it count as Holding if you grab it, or is the Polamalu Rule in effect?

Isn’t the Polamalu Rule a personal foul or like intent to injure?
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Nah – the Polamalu Rule is with respect to his hair. If it comes out of the back of the helmet, it can be legally grabbed to tackle.

The classic curse?
Okay so I’m bored but going over some of the classic info a trend became apparent.
Since the inception of the NHL’s Winter Classic outdoor game starting during the 2007-2008 NHL Season, the away team in each instance has gone on to the Stanley Cup Finals only to lose that series. The 2007-2008 Pittsburgh Penguins were the visiting team against the 2007-2008 Buffalo Sabres, only to lose to the Detroit Red Wings in the finals that year. The 2008-2009 Detroit Red Wings visited the 2008-2009 Chicago Blackhawks, only to lose to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the finals in 2009. The 2009-2010 Philadelphia Flyers visited the 2009-2010 Boston Bruins, only to go on to lose to the Chicago Blackhawks in that years Finals.1
Bruce Boudreau when asked about Brooks Laich's return to the lineup, he said: "He just adds another dimension to our team. If it was puzzle, he just fits that thing. He completes us."
Brooks Laich completing everything from teams to tires and everything in between.
Well given that the Caps broke with tradition to lose in seven games after being up 3 to 1, I could live with them breaking tradition again by winning the Cup after being the WC away team.

Agreed. People saying we need to break tradition need to remember getting to the finals isn’t a given. We can’t get greedy, like we did last year. No “16 wins to go”- FOUR wins to go. No getting Milan jurcina back and saying he’ll help us in the second round. Nothing is a guarantee, superstition or not. Right now the focus has to be- why did we lose in round one and how do we fix it. Not whether or not we’ll be able to defeat a recent coincidence
by 8vechkin on Jul 27, 2010 5:40 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I agree with the “one step at a time” aspect, but it is sixteen wins to go. To say “four wins to go” seems to suggest the goal is just getting out of the first round, and these Caps should have bigger ambitions than that.

Yeah, he did score 24 goals only 2 seasons ago, while Frolov only scored 19 this year.
I think, with the Kings, it’s possible for him to get 20+ again, if he’s with the right guys.

Max Talbot
Is a no talent hack who was traded on Ovechkin’s celebrity to get his own name in the paper.
That is all.

EmilyB, I’m sure you’ll have the link in tomorrow’s clips, but the Alex Ovetjkin blog site reports that the first encounter of Ovechkin with Talbot was a hit that Ovi did on Talbot early in his career. A really big hit on Talbot that knocked him down. The commentators did NOT think Ovi was dirty.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Completely unrelated. Talbot doesn’t care about that hit.
His issue with Ovi is most likely related to the residual bad feelings between Malkin and Ovechkin. Now that the Olympics/World Championships are over, Geno and AO won’t need to be teammates for a long, long time and can go back to feudin’.

Where are the salary cap calculators out there? Is this a good number?
Every bursted bubble has a glory! Each abysmal failure makes a point! Every glowing path that goes astray, shows you how to find a better way. So every time you stumble never grumble. Next time you'll bumble even less!
What is the best moment in Caps' history?
