Ranking international hockey sweaters
On my blog, ranked the current uniforms of the 12 international teams from the Olympics. Not really Caps-related, I know, but it's hockey-related, and I put a lot of work into it.

Nice reading for a Swede. I do rate the Russian one higher myself, but this isnt my blog so I dont have a saying :)
You Take Care Now.
I’m glad you agree with my #1 choice :D
Where would you have put the Russian uniform?

I’m the first to admit that my ordering would be totally different than that article. I’ll admit it reflects my biases.
I would probably have ranked Norway’s and Russia’s ahead of Team Latvia, and Finland but that’s my bias towards red and blue speaking. Among the teams with red and blue, Norway had the best mix of colors in that department, better than Russia, Czech Republic or Slovakia.
Germany’s colors have character and is unique and different in a way I enjoy. Belorus’a color scheme is different.
Agree on Switzerland as the worst in your rankings. Their uniforms make me think of the Red Cross. Makes me think of medicine rather than sports.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Haha, yeah, but since the Red Cross logo is really just the Switzerland flag with the colors inverted, how can they ever avoid the comparison!

Jake, the term you were looking for is watermarking – that’s the subtle patterns in the hems and design elements. They were put there to put a damper on counterfeits of course.
But they also played an interesting role in Olympic gamesmanship. When the Canadian unis were unveiled last summer, there was an immediate ruckus in Russia. One element of the watermarking inside the maple leaf logo was a double-headed eagle, which Canada claimed was a tribute to their First Nations but which Russia recognized as a usurpation of their national symbol (cf the Russia sweaters and Varly’s Olympic mask.) The outcry was such, they dispatched a reporter to Hockey Canada’s presser and demanded answers from the #2 guy in HC. He managed to answer with a straight face.
Intended or not (and Canada was playing for keeps in this Olympiad, therefore I vote intended), Team Canada was very effective at getting under Team Russia’s skin, and inside Team Russia’s head.
I would go so far as to say they pwned Russia, long before the teams hit the ice. Of course Russia helped Canada by failing to field a competitive team, coached by an incompetent staff.
Two other notes about Team Canada’s gamesmanship – you may recall that Crosby was named one of the assistant captains. And you can see the “A” on his sweater in every game. Except the gold medal game. The A mysteriously disappeared. Or maybe not so mysteriously. I think they wanted the iconic pix of their golden boy, unmarred by the lesser assistant designation. The captain’s C might have been acceptable, but not the lowly A.
And you may also remember there was a fuss post-Olympics, when Crosby’s golden gear went missing. It was all located eventually, and Crosby was asked how he knew for sure that >that< particular stick was the game-winner.
(paraphrasing) “Easy,” he said. “The other sticks I used in the game had a mark on them. But my overtime stick was unmarked.”
The pristine stick, the pristine sweater. Gotta give them props. Canada stage-managed their moment perfectly.

Ha, thanks! I knew there was a word. I’ll have to edit my post so I can avoid spending 2 lines explaining “watermark” every time I want to talk about it. And I had no idea about the two-headed eagle controversy.

I also had no idea of the eagle/watermarking backstory, and I never even noticed the whole unmarking of the Team Canada’s golden boy’s jersey and equipment. The gamemanship is fascinating. On a more practical level though, I believe the smaller ice was a huge advantage for both Team USA and Team Canada, and not just their talent-filled rosters.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

NHL ice was also part of the gamesmanship. And Canada/USA were the only two teams to roster 100% NHL players.

So true.

Thanks. This was a fun read. Sweden was our favorite as well. I was not a fan of Russia’s uniforms. The balance was off—there was too much red for me.

The white Russia unis were awesome. But I really liked their black practice jerseys.

I liked the black practice ones as well. I think it was also the horizontal stripes on the red socks that threw me.

I’m a huge fan of the white Russia jerseys, I’d have ranked that second behind the Tre Kronor.

I’ve never been a big fan of red jerseys in general. I think its pretty difficult to style a jersey with enough contrast and visual appeal when using a red based jersey, especially when your colors are red white and blue.
I always rock the red at the VC, but frankly, I’d rather be rocking the white. The Caps road jersey is much better looking to me than their home unis.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.

Unlike you, I’m partial to red jerseys. Maybe it’s because my original favorite sports team was red themed; i.e. the St. Louis Cardinals.
I definitely like the new home red Caps jersey better than they blue they were wearing during the 90’s and the first part of this decade.
(The Caps, Nats, and Cards have certainly cemented my pro-Red bias in uniforms.)

Nice list. I definitely agree with Sweden as #1- it’s always been my clear-cut favorite and I now wear a blue Bäckström sweater to many Caps games. However, I do prefer the older style where the crowns are blockier, as opposed to the more stylized new ones.
