btw, if you live in ffx county, the underground is a great place to find out about any “incidents” your friends and neighbors may have had. not that i’ve snooped or anything, but i do know the people who owned my house previously definitely didnt like each other….and i know which kid in the neighborhood is probably headed for military school.
still, the rink pwn’s it and i’m glad the NHL cracked down on their attempts to circumvent the otherwise totally legit and statistically significant poll.

Btw, we’re heavy into recycling here at The Rink (Matt Bradley would be proud), as evidenced by our previous use of today’s image here and here. And in case you don’t recall how Schlegel’s “Calder Candidate” season went, as I wrote in that second link (and reworded slightly in the first):
In support of his candidacy, Schlegel registered an assist in seven games for the Caps and was edged out for the 1992-93 Rookie of the Year trophy by Teemu Selanne, who finished a mere 131 points ahead of Schegel in the rookie scoring race.
Good times, good times.

Also, this:
June 26, 1993: Traded to Calgary by Washington for Calgary’s 7th round choice (Andrew Brunette) in 1993 Entry Draft, June 26, 1993.

Berra 27, .830, 125, .348 (19 seasons)
Bench 29, .817, 126, .342 (17 seasons)
Piazza 36, .922, 142, .377 (16 seasons)

Damn you for taking me away from work.
Looks like the ’84 draft on the surface seems to have the most late-round gems. From the 6th round onward:
Brett Hull (6th, 1269 games)
Cliff Ronning (7th, 1137)
Don Sweeney (8th, 1115)
Luc Robitaille (9th, 1431)
Gary Suter (9th, 1145)

I think most of the Eastern European guys (like Hasek and Krupp) were like that back in the day. Makarov went in that draft too. From what I remember Fetisov didn’t join the Devs till 89-90 with Kasatonov, where we proceeded to beat the hell out of both of them in the playoffs that year.

Wouldn’t surprise me. Combine that with the increasing calls to come over to North America (combined with what was going on there at the time and Tikhonov repeatedly putting him in the Black Aces and ripping him without justification in the press), at least we got to see him for a chunk of time.
Related to Mogilny; him on a line with Fedorov and Bure, on the European rinks? Must have been the closest thing to a human Autobahn out there.

Tikhonov started the 2009–10 season in the AHL with the Rampage and played in 18 games before opting to take up a loan to regain form with the Severstal Cherepovets of the KHL for the remainder of the season on November 27, 2009.3 After scoring 14 goals in 25 games, tied for second among Severstal, Tikhonov was recalled by the Coyotes on March 13, 2010. He rejoined the Coyotes as apart of the practice squad as they reached the first round of the playoffs.4

Name certainly played a role I believe. If I recall most scouts had him pegged as a second rounder. He was taken with 28th pick in the draft, so they probably reached a bit.
However, He’s only 22 and I think still has the makings of a regular NHL player. He’s defensively responsible and physical. His offensive game is what I believe needed some work. He did a good job working on that aspect in the KHL when he went to Russia in the middle of last season.
The name pick the Yotes made in the following round is the one I really take issue with. Jared Staal. 2 years later and they’ve already dumped him. With good reason mind you, but that was an awful pick.

by Carl Putnam on Jul 22, 2010 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah the Staal pick was even worse. Wasn’t Tik 19 when drafted though? You don’t normally see overage kids go in the first round or even second round. It was a reach, but I can see the justification given where the franchise was at the time.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Yes, he was over age. He was considered a late bloomer. He played well for Russian WJC team before the 2008 draft which helped his stock.

Never gonna happen. The Habs traded up to get Tinordi, I don’t see them then turning around and swapping him for Bieksa. I could be wrong – the franchise has gone a bit nutty in recent years – but it sounded like a baseless rumor when I first heard it.
They’ve got 7 guys there already that they are legit playing all the time (Markov, Spacek, Gorges, Gill, Subban, O’Byrne, Hamrlik). I guess they would just move O’Byrne out for Bieksa?

Possibly, and it would be an upgrade, but I think it’d be silly – as you point out it’s not like they have a gaping hole on the blue line. Plus they still haven’t re-signed Price so it’s not like they’re swimming in cap space.
The only guys in that lineup I would move out for Bieksa would be O’Byrne. All of those other guys either bring more to the table than KB does, or do what he does better.

Exactly. And while Bieksa is an upgrade over O’Byrne, it’s not like that’s a hard thing to do – O’B is a 6/7 guy like Erskine, and he’s cheaper than Bieksa, too. Plus he has a fair amount of snarl and probably isn’t the worst defenseman to lace up the skates.
I can’t see them trading for Bieksa just to replace a guy who doesn’t get a ton of ice time anyway.

Besides, when Verizon starts carrying the iPhone in January, AT&T probably won’t matter, anyway, judging by poor customer service and dropped call rates. I wonder how Verizon connectivity is in the Verizon Center? :D
It’s getting off topic, but I keep hearing that the Verizon iPhone is still just a rumor, not fact.

That survey on how many people know who Ovechkin is was conducted in Wisconsin. I would like to think that Minnesotans are a little more knowledgeable than the 45% of Wisconsin people that knew who Ovie was:) The guy even admitted that he thought Minnesotans would do better. Actually what was interesting is that he claimed where he lived in Wisconsin wasn’t hockey rich. Guess I don’t know Wisconsin that well.
I would have thought WI would do better as well. I’m sure MN would get better than 50%, but WI has plenty of hockey history and one of the best NCAA hockey programs in the country.

one thing the article didn’t say was where in south central Wisconsin this was. Some parts are still really rural (like, no cable service rural). Those towns, they love their high school hockey, in that area they probably also follow UW hockey, but they’re likely not NHL followers.
As far as Wisconsin not being hockey-rich: everywhere but Canada seems less enthralled with hockey if you’re from Minnesota. The Minnesota high school hockey championships gets broadcast in prime time. It’s insane.

uw hockey is the big ticket item here, but it still doesn’t compete with basketball and football at the UW. we do have some hockey talent here like Phil Kessel, Brian Rafalski, and the kitten saver Steckel.
we aren’t as rural as you might think though, most people here do casually cheer for either the blackhawks or wild, or the milwaukee admirals
you’re right though, high school hockey is a big deal, but badger hockey is the biggest deal

Bit OT, but...
Is there a section in the CBA that lays out (even if not very specifically) when the NHL can void contracts?
I know there is language in the SPC, which is attached to the CBA as Exhibit 1, related to failure to report or not follow rules/contract obligations, etc.
Like I indicated above, take a look at Exhibit 1, the actual SPC attached, there is wording in there.
I don’t see anything in there that addresses that. I could just be missing it in all the legal-speak, though.
When I have time later, I’ll take a look, but if I am understanding your question correctly, the wording is in there. It’s not very specific, but it gives the organization an out if the player does not meet the obligations of the SPC.
That’s not what my question was – I was asking if it shows what rights the NHL has to void contracts, such as the Kovy situation.
Sorry about that, I misunderstood your question, yes, it’s 11.6 and also some wording in Article 26, I believe, although the NHL is pointing to 11.6 from what I have seen in the comments so far.
He was making a joke.

Didn’t Mike Brophy write a really terrible article about how Ovechkin couldn’t enjoy playing to empty seats in Washington and thus needed to be traded to a “real” hockey market?
Brophy certainly floated this turd:
A source told sportsnet.ca Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin is so upset about having to pay 18 per cent of his salary to escrow he is prepared to consider leaving the Capitals after this season. Sources say Ovechkin expressed his displeasure with having to pay escrow during an NHLPA conference call meant to talk about the direction of the organization.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Escrow costs Alex ~20,000 per game. That’s not chicken feed. But it is part of the contract that he signed, so…
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
It’s a LOT of money and he has a legitimate beef. I just loved the idea that something like that would make him walk away from the NHL, though – he makes plenty, I’m sure it’s not a big enough deal to make him quit the Caps.
I also love the fact that he’s not the only one complaining about escrow yet is the only one singled out for it. Even Brooksie has expressed disdain for it.
Don’t you know it’s because he makes so much money, why should he care?
"It's always good to have vikings."

Part of the context of the reporting of Ovi’s complaint is that (when this was all originally reported) Sid had started to take some informal leadership responsibilities with the Players Association. This was the period where Paul Kelly was being ousted and Sid ordered somebody (have to look up who) off a conference call and the hockey media swooned. But simultaneously Ovi was taking charge of the “we’re playing in Sochi come hell or high water” process, so his possible petulance and legit question about escrow came just in time to discredit him.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
I just remember finding the whole thing obnoxious. Guaranteed he wasn’t the only one concerned with escrow on that call, and guaranteed there were plenty of guys chiming in – and I’m sorry, it’s his money and he has a right to take an interest on how much goes away and where it goes. People seemed to take offense to that for some reason, I don’t really get it.
But yeah, definitely fed into the whole parallel of Sid as gracious but hard-nosed leader who has the best interests of team, union and league at heart – Ovie as greedy, single-minded Russian whose best interests lie in Sochi in 2014.
Agreed. Ovie has legitimate gripes about escrow, but since he has a big contract he’ll have to discuss it in terms of how it impacts most players.
Players who don’t take an interest in where their money is going end up like Feds.
(Yes, I know about the avatar hounding - just pretend mine is invisible.)
I also love the fact that he’s not the only one complaining about escrow yet is the only one singled out for it.
That’s the problem I had with that article. Note, of course, that the Kovalchuk deal would kill players on escrow in a way that Ovi’s deal doesn’t.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Was that the same article where the guy praised Sid for bringing the Union together instead of being worried about his selfish escrow money?

And the Caps were still sitting in last place when it was written as well. They hadn’t pulled off their turnaround that season yet.
They were like the Miracle Braves baseball team of 1914 who were sitting in last place on July 4 but turned it around and ended up in first place that year. (Except their post season had a much happier ending than the Caps of 2007-2008 — they won the World Series. Yup, baseball had only one round of playoffs in those days.)
Rocking the Red since 1975
To be even more detailed, the Capitals extended him a QO and he did not sign his QO. Same situation as Fleischmann as both came to training camp without contracts and tried to earn a contract after not accepting/signing their QOs. TF signed a contract and Klepis went to Hershey on a professional tryout contract hoping to find an NHL contract either with the Caps or via a trade and when that didn’t happen he went back to the Czech Republic and later to the KHL.
Technically, the Capitals still own his rights since he was qualified and did not accept unless they released him and no indication that happened; he becomes UFA next summer as he turns 27yo in June of 2011.
On the semi-related Flash note, will we be blessed with a mock arbitration prior to Fleischmann’s hearing?
Not bloody likely. Better chance he’s traded (also not bloody likely).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
After looking at the list of 23-goal scorers from last season and what they’re getting paid, I guess I have to agree. In fact, I’m now thinking Flash’s award will be closer to the $3.5-4 million range:
Wojtek Wolski-$3,800,000
Milan Hejduk-$3,000,000
K. Huselius-$4,750,000
RJ Umberger-$3,750,000

Flash for 2.8 million has a nice ring to it. I think anything over 3 is overpayment, but that’s what the arbitrator is for. Not really looking forward to what the number is…
I think a penny over $2.5m is more than he’s worth, but sometimes you overpay guys (and doing so when you’re not cap-crunched and on a one-year deal for a guy whose points-per-game have increased in each season in this League, the AHL and WHL wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world).
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
And considering that maintaining his rights is the only way we’ll get anything close to value in return for him.

I guess that begs the question of whether another team will see an award of say $3.5 million for a 26-year old player who scored 23 goals in 69 games and think the contract is insane. I could see a lot of GMs looking at Flash and thinking he’s a potential 30 goal, 70 point player who’d be a bargain at $3.5 million.

What it says is that there is a no trade for a year clause if someone matches an RFA offer sheet, see Chicago and Niklas Hjalmarsson. They can’t trade him for 12 months.
However, there is no trade restriction in the current CBA as it relates to player contracts entered into via arbitration.

But here’s my question. His agent was using Plekanec as a comparable, and Pleks was at $2.75 million…do we really think he’s asking for more than $3? I agree that $2.5 is the max that he’s worth but anything below $3 million is, while maybe not reasonable, definitely easier to swallow than some of the numbers people are scared of.
How does Fehr’s contract enter into it? He played the same number of games and his numbers were slightly lower, but his +/- was better. In less playing time. Not the same style of player, but would/could that help keep the award under or around $3million?

Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
Not allowed to per the CBA during the process and hard to see GMGM and company ever doing it if they don’t have to after the fact.
Jurcina’s agent is/was Allan Walsh so my guess is if someone read something about a comparable it was something mentioned from their side.
What I recall being reported about Jurcina’s hearing were the numbers each side asked for including the fact that Walsh/Jurcina smartly asked for below the walkaway number and some comments from Walsh about the process.
The information that came out about the Shaone Morrisonn hearing a few years ago was great to read because it is so rare to see any info. released or leaked about these arb. hearings.
I’m sure Flash’s camp will use the argument that this was a guy who battled a life-threatening blood condition that limited his ability to train. Once he got his stamina back, he performed at a very high level. However, his lack of pre-season training eventually caught up with him resulting in his late-season downturn on into the playoffs. I know that’s the argument I’d use (and it could be true).
That’s exactly what they will say and the agent has already publicly made comments to that effect.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Flash is the type of player that gives GMs nightmares. They live in fear that the moment they trade him, he puts it all together and has monster season. You know that’s what Bruce is telling McPhee whenever there’s a mention of letting him go.
I’m still holding out hope he gets MacArthur’s arbitrator and gets an award of 4.5 mil.

QO was for 1.4M, the player filed for arbitration instead of accepting 1.4M.
This case is not the norm, IMO, in terms of arbitration hearings. The team from all appearances planned to walk regardless of the award as long as it was over the walkaway number and while no way to know for sure, it appears didn’t put up much of an argument against MacArthur and his agent’s case.
There have been management changes since that trade was made for MacArthur. MacArthur at his QO of 1.4M is different than MacArthur at more than that amount and Atlanta has made a lot of off-season changes, including bringing in a number of forwards via trade with Chicago. Things change. Of note, the Ladd trade was after QOs were extended.

Sergei Fedorov won’t be going to court after all. [Forbes]
From the “if you can’t understand what it says, just call a goddamn lawyer” file, the headline to this article is “NHL Star Sergei Federov Drops Malpractice Suit Against Hyman Lippitt.” WRONG! The right headline would be “Fedorov Settles Malpractice Suit Against Hyman Lippitt.” They bury the lede into the second paragraph, where in passing they say that the legal filing states “that the parties had resolved their dispute and that the case should be dismissed without costs or attorneys’ fees to either party.”
Fedorov didn’t drop shit. They came to an agreement, which will probably stay confidential forever, but for all we know he got paid a substantial amount of money.
Every time I read a media article on legal topics that is this poorly written, I wonder how badly the press is butchering all the other articles I’m reading where I don’t have any particular expertise. The iPhone antenna writing has been particularly bad. Actual RF engineers are either pulling their hair out or laughing their asses off at reporters trying to explain what the problem is (no, you can’t “short circuit” one antenna to another).
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Agreed. Hell, had he just dropped it, it’d be a bigger story.
Japers' Rink: Hockey blogging from the most powerful city in the world
That Hyman Lippitt firm is a den of thieves. Representing both Fedorov and the Ponzi scheme guy for the fraudulent investments themselves, and the worthless settlement that came out of it??? Hope Feds got something good out of the settlement with the firm.
… allegedly.

Drop Not Synonymous with Settle
Thanks for clarifying that, G.O.D. I wondered about that. I really liked the snippet from the judge, laying out the apparent inequity with a sneering contempt for apparent shysterism. I sincerely hope Fedorov made out reasonably well for all the harm they did. Next I hope to hear that he won’t lose his home after all, but that may take more time to resolve. I suppose it happens fairly often but one usually thinks of the victims as being dotty old ladies. Poor old Fedorov. And now he has another year in Siberia to endure!
but at least he’s playing with his brother in Siberia!
I doubt he got enough from the lawfirm to save his two houses in Detroit. But maybe he’ll make enough in the KHL this season to help with that.
he’s probably more concerned with saving his place in South Beach. I know I would be.

I am a cheesehead, lived in wisconsin my entire life and I certainly know who alex ovechkin is
people aren’t as dumb as that article says, however, I am the only caps fan I know in the area.
"I would say my biggest flaw, my Achilles heel is my tireless work ethic"-Kenny Powers
I’ve met plenty of people around the country that don’t know who Ovechkin is…they aren’t dumb just ignorant.
Having a quarter of the staff members select Ovechkin as the first person is space is pretty dumb though. Even worse is the 20% of students and staff members selecting him as the current Russian President.
I look to the future because that's where I'm going to spend the rest of my life.
Interesting point. How do high school teachers not know who the first Russian in space is? Sad commentary on our education system.
But honestly I can’t name a lot of stars in other sports, and I don’t think that my inability to identify NBA stars or tell you who the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders means those sports are irrelevant or need to do a better job of marketing. You watch what you like, you know what you watch. Hockey is never going to unseat baseball or football or basketball as a major draw in the US and I think we’ve all made our peace with that; I’m happy knowing that a lot of people in DC who wouldn’t usually watch are paying attention to it now and enjoying it while it lasts.
I was more pissed off at the swipe at the Caps, calling us “one of the most pathetic franchises”. Really?
tell you who the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders

Because they’re Real American, damn it. Duh.
Also, wait, what? You don’t know who the Raiders quarterback is?
It’s not an issue of being dumb, but unless you are really into hockey, the average sportfan is not going to see NHL highlights on the local news since there’s no local team to cover and you’re not going to see much watching SportCenter. They’re as likely to be all that familiar with individual players (especially ones with crazy foreign sounding names).

During games? I think so. Definitely was during practice – and if you were lucky (or, you know, capable of hearing) you could catch him launching more than a few f-bombs towards his teammates.
I still remember going to one of those informal skates the guys do at Kettler a few years ago, and they were doing a little scrimmage. I guess Olie didn’t like the effort, or lack thereof, and absolutely went off on everyone. Started yelling like a maniac about how it was BULLSH*T and they were LAZY and…oh man, it was hilarious.
I’m not sure Olie’s mouth ever stopped. And if he was on the ice, there was no filter.

More vacation stories
Varly went to a local (in Samara, his hometown) elementary school:
After a solemn flag-raising , which marked the opening of the competitions, for teams of participants and their fans were pupils of sports schools. Numbers of young gymnasts perform miracles of flexibility, and dance ensemble , dancing like mad under the hip-hop, many times multiplied competitive play guys. And to encourage young athletes to further, took the floor guest – Senior goalie hockey team the Washington Capitals – our countryman Semyon Varlamov .
His example is truly worthy of emulation – in his twenties Semyon has achieved major sporting success. "Sports should be from childhood – convinced hockey . – I recommend it to everybody , because physical activity is developing in a person the best quality.
Students listened to every word of a famous athlete , and after building surrounded him – asked for a picture with them and sign autographs . But Semyon is the attention was on his heart and he gladly talked with the guys.

Now granted, I’m a jerk as well, but I fully agree with this article. The NHL needs more personality and yet every time someone sticks their neck out and shows something that isn’t 100% processed and labeled for public consumption we go and ride the guy out of town. We can bitch about Crosby’s demeanor, but the bottom line is that we are getting exactly what we deserve. It’s all we’ll accept, and so it’s all we’ll get.

While understanding that many of you don’t care about the Predators or Western Conference hockey, if you have a little time or perhaps are interested, give this a read.
The ownership group has recently settled the controversial business with Del Biaggo, and so (I think) 27% of the team’s shares are back available. Obviously, this means that Brett Wilson from Calgary and Warren Woo from California can buy in. And David Poile gets his full salary cap, sooner rather than later.
Its a great time to be a fan, here – we’ll be icing the best team in franchise history (in my opinion), the ownership has stated that Ryan Suter and Shea Weber will absolutely, positively be re-signed, and now the financial problems are on the way out the door.
On the Forecheck: preaching the Predators' gospel to the unwashed masses.
That is great news for NSH. I saw that Boots was finally being bought out but haven’t had the time to read up on the details yet. The sooner you guys can spend to the cap the better. The haters consistently mistake your lack of ownership stability with a lack of fan base, or even worse a lack of production on the ice. It’s easy to convince yourself that NSH doesn’t have fans; it’s downright ignorant to overlook their consistent on-ice success. With the guys you have now and the farm you have on the way, getting more financial security couldn’t come at a better time.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
Yep. While there certainly have been attendance issues in the past, they’ve been totally overblown – we’ve never missed revenue sharing. And we don’t suck, either – only four teams have hit 40 wins five years in a row. We’re one of ’em.
That success has come with a salary cap of usually 10m or more below the norm. Now, certainly, a lot of money is going to be spent on Weber, Suter, Wilson, and Hornqvist in the near future, but Poile and the ownership supposedly plan 3 years in advance, so the extra money will still be welcome. We had 100 points 15 million dollars below the cap. That’s not too bad. I’m pretty excited to see what can be done here with solidified owners and no monetary issues.
That said, this is all for naught if we can’t win a fucking playoff series. I love Barry Trotz as much as anyone, but this is the make or break year for me. We’ve had eleven years of playoff mediocrity. Enough is enough.

I can appreciate that. It’s tough to always be credited for just making the playoffs. Trotz gets a ton of credit and regardless of either of our opinions he’s not going anywhere. It’s not really fair to put the playoff exits on him, IMO. There have been some brutal draws in that list and as you said he’s generally carrying a lot less firepower just because of the financial constraints.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
I can’t really justify bitching about no recognition, either, with the litany of playoff chokes. But yeah. Trotz is not going anywhere.

I don’t think you guys have a history of playoff chokes. You ran into some great teams (DET, CHI) and you hit SJS a couple times when they had very good teams. I never looked at your roster and thought you were bound to roll over people. The closest was the 100 point year but that wasn’t terrible, IMO. And even if it was, it was just one year.
