The rest of the release:
A 6’4", 200-pound native of Val-d’Or, Quebec, Sabourin (SA-boo-rihn) is a 10-year professional who has played 57 NHL games for Calgary, Pittsburgh and Vancouver. He spent 2009-10 with the Providence Bruins of the American Hockey League (AHL), posting a 28-27-0 record in 56 appearances with a 2.67 goals-against average, a .915 save percentage and three shutouts. He finished third in the AHL in saves (1,579), fourth in minutes (3,278) and tied for sixth in wins.
Sabourin, who will turn 30 on Sept. 2, played 43 games in the NHL in 2007-08 and ’08-09 while with the Penguins, posting a 16-17-3 record in that time. This season marked the first time since the 2004-05 work stoppage that he didn’t play at least one game at the NHL level. He was named the AHL’s top goaltender in 2005-06 when he led the league with a 2.26 goals-against average with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Sabourin was originally a fourth-round choice, 108th overall, of Calgary in the 1998 NHL Draft.
Obviously a replacement for Bacashihua and a mentor to Holtby in Hershey. If he sees any real time in D.C., things have gone terribly wrong.

Is it a 1-way or 2-way contract?

CapGeek reported this at about 10:30pm last night, suggesting GMGM slept through his alarm for quite a while. Jokes aside, decent signing – let’s hope we never see him in red. Just glad to see a sign of life.
Good Signing
I like this move because Sabourin has some limited NHL experience, and can be a mentor to Holtby in Hershey. In addition, if there is an injury with either Varly or Neuvy, he can be called up to be the back up in DC so that Holtby can keep getting game experience.

Agreed mostly Mike. It’s a good signing if he plays 0 minutes in the NHL. And almost certainly he will play 0 minutes in the NHL.

I think we are all in agreement here. Can be called up in emergency, while still giving all the game minutes to our better goalies.
If Varly or Neuvy is out day-to-day, I want Sabourin on that bench so Holtby’s development isn’t affected. In other words, I want Holtby to play as much as possible.
If Varly or Neuvy is out for a week or more, I want Holtby up as the backup. Because competent goaltending is, you know, important ’n stuff.

What about also getting Holby that NHL experience? Or does he still have plenty of time for that…

I don’t want Holtby to get experience in sitting on an NHL bench. That’s the idea behind the one week thing — that’s long enough for him to get a spot start or two

He’ll be seen in the NHL this coming year. I have no confidence that Varlamov can stay healthy for an entire season, and Sabourin is a capable guy to start 4 or 5 games a year.
Probably not at this point in his career. He hasn’t played in an NHL game since January 2009 and was absolutely brutal in the later games he played in that season. He would not be an “emergency” goaltender as much as he would be a “Varlamov, Neuvirth, and Holtby quit and started a goalie commune in Alberta” kind of situation.
If you've read this far...seek help.
Where’s Stretch in this scenario?

I still see him as the back-up if Varly or Neuvy get hurt during the season. That said, if there is an injury and they want to give the uninjured goaltender the night off, they could call up Holtby for that game, and then send him back to Hershey…

at best, someone will get hurt and Sabourin will get to sit on the bench for a game, just like every other goalie that’s passed through the Caps system lately. We’ve been it before. Although if he plays, as everyone else has pointed out, that’s a big problem.

Anyone know Dan Dunn’s status for next year? Will he be a senior at St. Cloud?
Is Tom Ford signed? Would that make him the # 3 goalie for Hershey right now?

Looks like all the experts were right about the Caps going after a veteran goalie. Shows what we know.

Sabourin
showed great poise in coming off the bench for 10 minutes of a third period in a game seven, a few seasons ago in a backup role to Roberto Luongo , who had to leave the icefor an equipment repair in that game . good signing

It wasn’t equipment repair. Lou was in the Loo with a bad bout of diarrhea.
