Sunday Caps Clips: Closing Out Development Camp

Your savory Sunday brunch links:

  • Estimates vary, but upwards of 4,000 mostly red-clad fans packed Kettler Capitals Iceplex for the 2010 Development Camp finale and Capitals Fan Fest. The Caps put on a good show for the fans, with free public skating, the traditional equipment sale, special deals in the pro shop, and a hour-and-a-half autograph session with Hockey Hero Brooks Laich. [Review by Capital Spirit, Pictures by Caps Snaps
  • Vogs closes the book on camp (and his season - brilliant as ever). [Dump 'n Chase]
  • Did we mention it may very well be a haunted equipment sale? [Jumping the Glass]
  • Oh, and it was really really packed.  Hockeytown packed. [Puck 'n Hockey]
  • Quote of the day: ""It’s fabulous," Capitals head coach Bruce Boudreau said about the turnout.  "I can’t picture another team in our league having as many as three-thousand people coming to watch a summer scrimmage game...It’s quite a testament to the enthusiasm of the fan base and the loyalty of the fan base to come out.  It makes you proud to be a Capital." [CSN/Allen Popels]
  • With the skill players looking largely gassed after a demanding week, the Development Camp finale scrimmage belonged to the grinders.  The game was tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and remained tied at the end of overtime.  Cody Eakin scored one Gimmick goal for the Red team in the shootout, but White prevailed with goals by Stanislav Galiev and Andrew Miele and the "Away" team skated off with the victory. [SB Nation DC]
  • But the spotlight was stolen in the second period by a pair of fights. Anthony Pisano and Joe Finley decided to reprise their bout from the first scrimmage, then Stefan Della Rovere took exception to a slash administered to teammate Cody Eakin and challenged Trevor Bruess to have a go.  They went, and Delly sent Bruiser off to the penalty box with a freshly rearranged nose - face, sweater, and ice covered in blood. It’s not the first time that Puck Daddy made the Yahoo Homepage, but a story about an AHL league? In the middle of July??

Eating some sour grapes

I thought my summer Caps fix would have gone better, but the RSVP system for the event itself was useless/flawed. (Unless you are a season-ticket holder getting into the equipment sale on a separate RSVP system.)

The Caps advertised the Fan Fest and to “RSVP” for the event and it would send you a confirmation message. I thought, “that’s a good idea considering there would probably be a mob there, causing fire code issues.”

So, I drove about two hours with my sister to the fan fest, arriving around 9:40 a.m. Well, apparently that was way too late. The scrimmage was standing room only and people were sitting in the bleacher’s stairs, and knowing it was a fire code violation, I joined in all the way down in the last stairs with other people. That lasted about 10 minutes before everyone on the stairs was asked to leave then we didn’t get to see the rest of the scrimmage because there was no place to stand or sit without causing safety issues or standing in front of someone else against the wall.

A staffer asked me if we had checked in to Fan Fest, and I asked, well, for what because it appeared to be useless. “You can check into the Fan Fest, but the scrimmage is open to everyone.” Well, I doubt that they were really out to control a mob for face painting.

The guy said the RSVP system “was just a way for us to see how many people would come” and another staffer said it was for “a chance to win an autographed jersey.” A drawing was the least of my desires. I didn’t see too many smiling faces and a good bit of folks were grumpy like me because of being elbowed, rammed, blocked.

I got there extra early to avoid such situations. They said the event has probably outgrown the location.

I got there at about 9:15, and it was pretty full then. There were still quite a few spots to stand at the glass, but the bleachers were almost full. I was over by the little press room, and people were actually fine. Some older guys actually moved so a couple of little kids could scoot in to see better. It has definitely outgrown its location though. I had a good spot, but I really couldn’t move much, not even to take my sweatshirt off.

You were definitely smart. I came early on Saturday myself since I wanted to do the 8:00 morning skate. I had RSVP’ed (for the drawing) but hadn’t signed up for the equipment sale. I was initially wondering if I’d be able to get in since the folks working the check in thing were, of course, more interested in getting everybody squared away for the equipment sale. They said I was welcome to hang around until the public sale.

Everyone doing the equipment sale thing were queued up at the rink gate for the equipment sale so I wondered if I could get in to skate. Finally, asked someone at the desk on whether I could get into the skating and was told the middle entrance was the one to enter. After that I was squared away. Got my skates on, skated, and had my skate bag available to stake out my seat for the scrimmage. So I was good.

I knew it would be crowded so we got there about 9:00 and I was able to find seats for the scrimmage for four—and I stayed there while the boys did some of the activities. I think everyone was taken by surprise by just how crazy of a scene it was. But the autograph line (which I jumped into after the first period but the boys remained seated) was well managed. It was really the common areas that were overflowing—just not big enough. We had a blast though—and I think next year we will arrive even earlier if we go. I didn’t bother with the RSVP.

Indeed. There was such an air of excitement about this year’s draft and some really good returning prospects. And it was promoted heavily as a fan fest day.

I will say though that the guy I stood behind in the autograph line said that he had been coming to development camp for years and although it had been really well attended before he had never seen it this wild. Guess this is the logical outcome of the Ovi effect—fans wanting to know as much as possible about the future team—fans making a longterm emotional investment in the Caps.

Yet the fanfest part of it seemed to be non-existent. If you looked out on the parking deck, it was pretty deserted.

I don’t know if it’s really worth the expense, but they’re really going to have to think about Verizon Center for this in the future. There’s lots of negatives in that — if three to four thousand people come, that’s really not enough to justify laying the ice, is it? And where will they put the moonbounce? (Did anyone see any kids actually in it?) I think an attraction to Kettler is the easy of getting there and cheap parking — something you can’t get downtown. A big plus, though, is the size of the concourse to spread out.

Many kids were in it when I arrived. Just not once the scrimmage started. The free skate started at 8:00. I think the idea was for people to arrive one or two hours early and the kids could skate or do the outdoor stuff, then go watch the scrimmage and/or stand in line for Brooksie’s autograph. But I bet they got a much larger attendance than anticipated, and will prepare accordingly next year. The convention will be in a larger space this fall. It was pretty packed last year at the Gaylord.

I wonder how much of the lack of activity for the fanfest part had to do with the heat. Granted, we expect Washington to be hot in the summer, but a heat index of 100 (and code orange air quality) might have discouraged some folks

by miseenjeu on Jul 18, 2010 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure it contributed a good deal to that. Kids were just not going to do the Moonbounce and other stuff outdoors in that type of heat and parents were not inclined to stand outside.

Due to the heat, they moved the Prospects’ Autograph signing indoors. Or it would be logical to believe. I understand they had it outdoors last year.

The Autograph signing ended up being earlier than the 1:30 advertised time. When the scrimmage was over, I ended up dumping my skates in my car (after some misadventures and wrong turns in finding the car), going downstairs to eat in the food court and coming back upstairs. I found the autograph sessions upstairs, which had already started, with the guys divided up into two separate areas. I luckily got the autographs of all available guys (even though all the guys were not present.)

by CapsFan75 on Jul 18, 2010 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions

We misplaced our car too. Yeah the heat was also a factor. We were there early enough that lots of people were outside when we arrived. By the time we left it was a short line at the Fan station.

Good for you that you got their signatures. With kids involved, we just left. The scrimmage alone tuckered them out. Still love your “Stalin” story. Kuz (gotta find a handy nickname or I’m going to have to learn how to spell his name) has quite the snark.

I knew it was gonna be nutz when they had full bleachers for the Wednesday scrimmage. Full bleachers for a weekday scrimmage + equipment sale + FanFest + Brooks Laich = sayonara Kettler.

If I was the Caps, I’d be thinking real hard about moving this year’s rookie scrimmage to Verizon. FlyersNation travels pretty well, and they almost had a Cup this year – I’ll bet they want to see the newbies like we do.

Andrew got a raise

Capgeek finally posted Gordo’s new contract:

2010-2011
AHL: $90,000
NHL: $500,000
Cap Hit: $500,000

A nice 28% bump up in his AHL salary. His possible NHL number went down (from $660,000), though I wonder if the lower cap hit would give him a better shot at more dates at the show.

Don’t know how the QO amount effects the AHL contract side. I did notice that all 5 of the guys signed last Thursday had their NHL salary amounts lowered to $500K for next year. I can only think that’s to make any of them more “cap friendly” if they move up.
Just going on their AHL increases, it looks like both Gordo and Jay Beagle negotiated over what was offered.

From RMNB (like renminbi, that guy’s money)

Ted’s Speech

The chairman of the newly-christened Momumental Sports and Entertainment, and majority owner of the Capitals, Mr. Ted Leonsis, made an appearance before the scrimmage started to address the assembled mass of fans. Ted spoke for a few minutes about the state of the franchise, acknowledging the early season exit and promising a better fan experience in the upcoming season, explaining that big changes were on the way. He got a warm reception from the crowd and the scrimmage began (a few minutes early even).

Can anyone post any other details about what Ted said? SB Nation DC pointed out that a recent Ted’s Take hints of a TV network in the future. Did he drop any other hints in the speech? What could the big changes be?

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Jul 18, 2010 5:21 PM EDT reply actions

RMNB quotes Ted saying

explaining that big changes were on the way

And now Ted’s Take says

We aren’t done with our work this off season so for those of you who are impatient I ask that you wait just a bit. Thank you.

But then immediately after it says

I was deeply impressed with our young centers. At some point in the future – maybe not this coming season – I believe our center ice will be populated with players we drafted and developed.

Is he foreshadowing a player acquisition?

Atta dinnin stick a who!

by Gould Old Days on Jul 18, 2010 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

He might be, but I think you may be reading too far into it. Ted doesn’t have his hands on player decisions so while he may know that GMGM still has his eyes open (which I’m sure most intelligent fans would already recognize) I don’t think he has knowledge of an imminent move. Who knows, maybe we are just a day from re-signing Belanger.

I will say that C has gone from a position of weakness to a position of strength essentially in one year. Drafting Mackan and Eakin last year was huge, as was the progression of MP (including his NHL production during his cup of coffee), then this year we get Kuznutz and Galiev as well. By my count that’s 5 guys that could play 2/3C in the NHL in the next 3 years. Further, all 5 of those guys have skill sets that make it plausible that they could move to the W if the C is crowded. That’s some incredible flexibility, and it gives me confidence that we will be able to fill our top 6 F slots in the coming years with homegrown talent. Well done, GMGM.

would you agree that most likely they still need a one year stop gap

I’d love MP or Mackan making the NHL full time this year, but it’s stretch to say that would cover our 2C/3C holes. As I see it we have only 3 legit centers on the roster now (Backstrom, Boyd Gordon and Steckel) and two of them are 4Cs. I can see the club getting stronger up the middle with the last couple drafts, but those guys are a few years away.

I’m seeing a midseason pick up if Belanger doesn’t take a 2 year deal.

A danger to myself and others on the ice

by can't skate on Jul 18, 2010 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think we have anyone just yet to fill the 2C hole. Belanger could fill the 3C, or Steckel could even be given a shot at it – I think he has the talent to work there. And if I remember right, I think he has been used there for short periods (1-2 games, or part of a game) in the past. I believe he centered Fehr and Chimera for a bit last season.

by timmyv38 on Jul 18, 2010 10:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I’d love to get Belanger or a similar player. I don’t like two rookies in the middle. There isn’t a UFA that can take the 2C so unless a trade happens GMGM should focus on getting someone to play 3C.

There were a few UFA’s that might have been able to, but none that made me really want them. A trade for a top 2C would be nice. If we do have a rookie center, I’d rather it be at 2C. I hope they can get Belanger back – he is an ideal 3C, especially if he gets put between Chimera and Laich. THAT would be a tough line.

The contract wouldn’t be untradable if it weren’t a 35+, but it is. That cap hit stays with you no matter what happens, until it expires in three years. I guess you could send him down to the minors, but that’s about all.

3 years, $5M per… only team that will take that is one that needs to get to the salary floor.

And I just noticed… he has a NMC. So no minors.

by timmyv38 on Jul 19, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Details on NMC – says he can’t be traded/sent to minors before July 1, 2012.

by timmyv38 on Jul 19, 2010 12:30 AM EDT up reply actions

Even worse. He’d have to include a significant dowry in talent or roster player to get another team to take him.

And I don’t think anyone wants Bouchard.

Other question – are either of those 2 someone Boston would consider trading?

by timmyv38 on Jul 19, 2010 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Boston is looking to trade a C, since they have Savard, Bergeron, Krejci, Seguin and Sobotka; the first four are top-9 caliber players and they only have three slots. They’d like to trade Savard, because of his contract and his concussion, but he’s the piece least likely to attract interest. He also has an NTC, so his going anywhere is contingent on his approval.

Krejci is on an RFA deal and they locked him up before Kessel and made the de facto decision to keep him instead of Kessel as a consequence. That should tell you something about how valuable the organization considers him, he’s not going anywhere. Sobotka is a 4C, dime-a-dozen around the league, we have two sitting on our bottom line right now. Bergeron is very good and the Bs know it (hence his contract), but he’s also missed huge chunks of time with a concussion. The advantage to him is that his contract is expiring after this season; it makes the return less imposing while limiting the long-term risk of a recurrence. Seguin was the #2 overall pick and a legitimate candidate for the #1 pick – he’s pretty well untouchable.

I don’t think they want to trade Bergeron, but we’ll see if someone can pry it out of them. He’d make quite a deadline piece, but I’d rather the Caps get him earlier.

Yes please to Bergeron.

He’s in St Louis now but I guess that Campbell is the new Sobotka for Boston. Campbell did file for arb I’m not sure if they made a deal yet or if there will be a hearing.

Pft why play a small French guy when you have a Svensk viking.

And again, if Bergeron does make it to the trade market, what are the odds another worse team doesn’t outbid the Caps?

Agree that of the UFA Belanger would be the best, but I didn’t see anything out of him that would suggest that he could handle 2C responsibility. For the 2C position I don’t know the answer (you never know what’s available by trade and by what cost), but right now I don’t see any answers (at least from FA or within the club). It’s not something they need to address immediately, however, it could be costly by the trade deadline, and you never know who will be available.

This is the position I’ll (and I suspect most Caps fans) will be watching intently this year.

by Eggseronius on Jul 19, 2010 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Belanger is a 3C. And quite good at that position, with his faceoff %, defensive ability, and grit. He doesn’t have the offensive or playmaking ability to be a 2C though.

He’s not particularly good on the PK, either.

Historically, he has been. However, that was on Minnesota – defensive systems can cover up flaws. He didn’t do very well last season with the Caps.

2007 Minnesota Forwards playing more than 30s/gm on the PK, sorted by Relative Corsi

Belanger is at the bottom of the list in both seasons – he both lets up a lot of shots when he’s on the ice and doesn’t turn many chances back the other way, in spite of his speed and talent. Now, being compared to Marian Gaborik and Mikko Koivu on the PK isn’t exactly the lowest bar to clear, but he doesn’t do that well in comparison to the rest of his MN teammates, either. His rep is that he’s a good PKer, but I didn’t see it with the Caps last season and I don’t find any evidence of it in the data.

I wouldn’t go so far as to say that C is a position of strength yet.

I think all you mentioned look like good prospects right now, and all are likely to deserve a spot on an NHL roster sometime in the future, but I’m not confident that any are a 2-3C on a stanley cup contending team in the next 2-3 years. And at least two (Galiev and Eakin) are not likely going to make it as a C.

Only two who are even getting a sniff this year or next (MP and MJ) have significant progression to make.

I agree that all of these were good picks and likely to make it to the NHL, but most are at best 2-3 years from making an NHL roster, and none a sure thing.

I haven’t seen any players/deals yet that I think the Caps would have benefited from signing this summer, but I also think their position for C (this year and in the future) is a position of hope, but not strength.

He was sort of hard to hear from where I was standing, but I believe he also said something about promising “better ice”. I think I heard that, but could be wrong.

Evgeny Kuznetsov hams it up as he joins the Russia men's national team for the "Sweden Games" leg of the Euro Hockey Tour in Helsinki, Finland.

There's a bit of controversy as their game against the Finns is scheduled to be played in Helsinki's outdoor Olympic Stadium. Where the daytime temps are currently approximately minus-15 degrees Celsius, with periodic heavy snow.

This interview with head coach Zinetula Bilyaletdinov is fascinating, as he frets about the weather and especially when the reporters press him on the leaked reports that Kuznetsov will be centering the top line for Team Russia, just weeks after his 20th birthday.
