Whew! Back in the US and catching up. Gotta love Brooksie – and you have to think that the players know when to worry, so if he’s not worried, maybe some of us fans need to stop fussing so much.
Can’t wait to see what MJ90’s got. I haven’t gone through all the back links and comments, but from Corey’s link, it sounds as if so far so good. Him rotating back defensively by instinct will probably serve us well – can we put him with AS28 on the PP?
My Caps beach towel paid a visit or two. Look for pics in the coming days in the Fanshots.

I found a video of the Delly-Bruess fight today. Is not very good but it’s something.
Lobbies: Green, Carlson, Orlov
Looks like Delly had the upper hand. And that there was already another white team player in the box. Would be interesting to know what lead up to Bruess’ decision to get sucked into a 2nd penalty for his team.

Bruess took a swing at Eakin’s ankles/skates/leg area just after the Finley/Pisano fight had finished. Delly went out there and dropped the gloves with Bruess immediately after the puck dropped to resume play.

Now that you mention it, I do remember reading about that. I probably missed the beginning of that fight since I was probably watching the participants from the last fight going to the penalty box.
Must admit that I was stunned to see a fight happen when the last one had barely finished.
Rocking the Red since 1975
The other player in the box was Pisano, who had just been sent off for fighting Finley seconds earlier. Bruess’ team wasn’t shorthanded when he fought Delly.
Finley and Pisano telegraphed their fight when they stopped to chat on their way off the ice at the end of the first period. Then they dropped the gloves early in the second.
Delly and Bruess had been working their way up to a clash most of the week, and I guess decided to use the Finley/Pisano throwdown as a appetizer. Their middleweight match was much better. We met one of the referees in the elevator later, and he was marveling that Delly threw three uppercuts – and landed them all. he also said that Della Rovere/Bruess would have been fined in an actual pro game for fighting prior to the puck drop.
You perhaps knew me better as "Your Nation's Capital." Same great commentary, now with 100% more transparency!
Both fights are now in the FanShot sidebar, FWIW.

I filmed that! Thanks for criticizing my filming :(
Nah, it was a good fight. Bruess was bloodied up – you could see it all over his jersey and the penalty box.
Bruess – Eakin – Della Rovere would be hell for other teams as one line.

I’m convinced someone could create two hockey teams to play against each other. On one team, they could put Ovi, Crosby, Mike Richards, Pronger, Brodeur, among other people, and call it the Blue Birds. On the other team, they could put Semin, Malkin, Jeff Carter, Timmonen, Keith Seebrook, Dan Boyle, Fleury; etc. and call it the Robins. (Of course, we have to fill out both rosters but I’m too lazy to think further.)
I think the Bluebirds and the Robins would play a very good, tough, and spirited game against one another and the guys would bond as teammates.

It’s hard not to be excited about the potential of this year’s draft class the way Galiev and Kuznetsov have performed. I haven’t been there to see them, but it sounds like Kuz has star potential.
And look at that crowd! Would never guess this is a rookie camp scrimmage based on that shot.
He does. He stands out.
But he could use some work on his footwork and definitely his conditioning – he was spent today (as were a lot of ‘em, though Cody Eakin still had a ton of jump – I’m not breaking news by saying that he’s one to watch, for sure.)

I’ve been raving about Galiev all week, and this morning’s scrimmage did nothing to change my mind. This kid is going to be a very very very good player in the NHL. Marcus Johansson wasn’t as noticable today (to me) as I had hoped. Eakin and Kuz were the players I noticed most often.
Orlov misplayed a couple rushes, seemed to pick the wrong times to jump up in the play and didn’t stand out like I remembered him from last season. Could just be an end of camp thing.
Finley’s first pass out of the zone was better than I expected. I’m still taking the under on JP’s 1 NHL game played over/under bet.

Question that I’d like to debate on this thread:
Are the ESPY’s less meaningful than the regular NHL awards (Hart, Selke, etc.)?

As Canadien fans in 2008-2009 did their best imitation of Cincinnati Reds fans of the late 1950’s in baseball All-Star game voting. There was 1 or 2 years where Reds fans had stuffed the ballots in favor of their players and finally the Commissioner of baseball at the time disallowed two of the results and selected more “deserving” guys in their place and All Star game voting was then given to the players.

Probably not limited to Pens fans. Do you suppose the average Atlanta Thrashers fan cares who wins the Hart? Let’s assume for this discussion that such people exist.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 18, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m not exactly sure what you mean by the second statement. I do think that ATL fans, or fans of any team that didn’t have a player in the running, would agree that the ESPY is by far the least prestigious. By far.
I do agree that the bias is not limited to Pens fans. Fans have a way of rationalizing what they want to believe and propping up their own guy. It just shocked my conscience that the author of a reputable SBN blog would go so far as to suggest that the ESPY’s were on even footing with the Hart in order to rationalize his biased position.
Lockout talk makes me want to go out and choke an old lady - Elliotte Friedman
You’re right, I’m not really discussing the original question. Were it not for posts such as this one and the one on Pensburgh, I might have gone on blissfully unaware that Sid had won something called an “ESPY”. The only way that award could be less meaningful is if they limited the voting to residents of Florida and South Carolina.
What I meant above is just that fans’ relative interest in the official NHL awards is seemingly tied very closely to whether or not they had a horse in the race.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 18, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I agree with that. I just like to think there is some basic level of objectivity that fans can all recognize regardless of partisanship.
The fact that to vote for one ESPY award requires voting for all makes that award even more meaningless than just having fans vote. Not only is it an internet vote, but you have thousands (millions? how many people vote on these things?) of people who just want to go vote for Kobe who have to vote on the NHL award so they pick the recognizable name. Ever since Crosby won without playing anywhere near a full season I think people should pretty much recognize the ESPY’s are worthless. I know you probably agree, just ranting on the ESPY’s, as if it was needed.

I thought Mackan and Galiev had good games (though I think it’s weird that they’re playing Galiev on the W so much if they like him at C better), and it definitely looked like Kuz was trying to do too much by himself, because I think he thinks he’s the best player on the ice (which is probably true).

That’s right, I forgot about him. It’s a bit harder to get to BC games, as they charge a lot and are hard to get. Northeastern is fun because the arena was built in the ‘20s, and it’s really cheap to go to a game. There ya go! They renovated the place last off season, and I wasn’t able to check it out, but I heard good things. The team has gotten much better too, but not quite at the level as BU/BC, so the stadium isn’t always full. That may sound bad, but there are no assigned seats for the tickets, so if you buy a lower bowl ticket and get there early enough, or with a smaller crowd, you can be right at the glass. Not to mention the student section provides quite a bit of entertainment in addition to the game itself. Considering the conference they’re in, they always play at least a few national champion contenders anyways, so it really is a win win.
