2/1 that Finley gets a decent hit in and pwn3d in the same scrimmage.
Look at this signature line. Notice the lack of spelling errors and self-whoring?
I just hope he doesn’t hurt an actual prospect.

Who did Yonkman hurt? I just know Eakin and Mackan had concussions in their draft year. Both seem to have recovered but the last thing we need is some jackass trying to prove himself with a head shot. That could go for SDR as well.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Not a prospect, but a vet. In retrospect, I suppose the unfortunate thing of it is that he didn’t finish him off.
And totally agree on headshots. Take comfort in the fact that all those guys are too fast and shifty for Big Joe to catch.

Also the fact that it was on the first go-round, not this one.

Had he finished him off, there wouldn’t have been a second go-round… which was my point.

Cold. But hard to disagree.

Agreed, I don’t see Finley catching Mackan or Eakin (and Eakin is on his team) but if Mackan does get himself caught in a vulnerable position and Finley takes advantage of him… well, light that cigarette and kiss our best 2C option goodbye.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
This is why, delightful OFB blog aside, I don’t understand having him at this camp anymore. They kicked the tires as an F and decided they were too flat and they really need to kick the tires again? I don’t get it.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
When you’re built like Finley you get time to develop. If he can develop NHL quality skills his presence on ice ALONE can be a game changer. Just ask Ovechkin about trying to move Chara or how much fun it is for Knuble to have Gil ride his butt all game.
Finley will get one more year after this to show significant improvement or it’s a wrap.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven back to Pittsburgh, and hear the lamentations of Sidney Crosby.
I suppose. I remain skeptical, but I’d love for him to prove his doubters wrong.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Oh, absolutely! The odds are against him. But with his skill, if he was 5 inches shorter and 40lbs of muscle lighter we wouldn’t be discussing his name this year. Or ever, for that matter.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven back to Pittsburgh, and hear the lamentations of Sidney Crosby.
Chara isn’t particularly effective against Ovechkin – Alex is every bit as powerful as Zdeno and his center of mass is lower. Once he gets the shoulder in and starts driving, there’s not a whole lot Big Z can do.

Just got a text from Hooks Orpik. Apparently SDR just plastered a guy with a beautiful hit. That guy is never going to stand out in drills but will probably never be invisible in game situations.

Finley just took out 2 guys at the same time behind the net. Was pretty good.
Still 0-0 no one standig out too much yet. Well Baby Gus is, but he’s literally falling all over the place. Either he needs a skate sharpening or he is pitiful.

Red team is getting pinned in their own zone almost every shift, I don’t think eakins’ been as far as his blueline.
White team not getting too many good chances, but graubner does look pretty good holding the fort down

Yeah the ‘weaker’ team has had a lot more zone time, but not many scoring chances. As kind of expected with unfimiliar young players it’s been pretty disjointed play so far.

2nd is underways…Eakin collected a rebound in prime position in the slot but botched it. Not too much going on.
Herbert (the white goal scorer) just got a PS and pulled a sick move on red goalie (Holtby? I’m not sure it’s at other end). Anyways Herber could lift it, maybe little bit bad ice. No goal

Anyone know the back story on Cullen?
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
He played high-school hockey for Gonzaga here in DC, and was a standout player there. Not sure what he did after that.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Holy Crap. I was attending Gonzaga back in the mid-90s when they had a thrown together club team. The most memorably moment of that era was one player breaking his leg because he lost his balance STANDING in the corner of the rink during drills.
What a long way Gonzaga hockey has come!
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven back to Pittsburgh, and hear the lamentations of Sidney Crosby.
I dot know but he is starting to stand out today in a good way. Not sure if he’s just having a good day or benefiting from Kunetzsov but Cullen is impressive out there right now.

He floated some, and the way he played I asked “What the hell’s he playing wing for?” more than once, but he wasn’t blatantly awful.

I had a feeling that’s how he would look. We’ve been talking about getting Kuznutz out of the KHL, but if I had a choice I’d rather pluck Orlov and put him in HER. He really needs the coaching and the work on the angles in the small rink.
Deo ac Fehritati.
Orlov was leading the rush some many times, it makes Green look downright defensively responsible.

What are the options on Kuznetsov? Is there any chance he plays in DC or Hershey this year, or is it a given that he’ll be playing in Russia?
He won’t be in HER. He has a contract in the KHL that can be bought out, but I don’t think he’d do it for the AHL. I don’t really know though. He’s probably a year or two away still.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Didn’t he state, like Kugryshev, that he was going to completely honor his KHL contract.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven back to Pittsburgh, and hear the lamentations of Sidney Crosby.
I don’t know that he was ever that clear. He said he had a deal but everything I saw was relatively ambiguous. The stumbling block seems to be more likely whether the KHL team will allow the buyout.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Is it fair to also state the Caps seem to support decisions to stay in the KHL and honor contracts? Seems like they want to maintain a very healthy relationship with Eastern European hockey for obvious reasons.
What is best in life? To crush your enemies, see them driven back to Pittsburgh, and hear the lamentations of Sidney Crosby.
Galiev has been invisible too…I’m starting to think Burt is the problem on that lone, he keeps misplaying the puck am I thinking that’s hurting Johansson. Would like to see coaches change them up a little.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
by Hooks Orpik on Jul 14, 2010 4:32 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Interesting observation. Burt seemed to look good in drills with his speed, but I thought it was odd that he was holding his own with much more highly touted players. That makes more sense, and I’m looking for anything to justify Mackan not being great.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Just now: Mackan wins faceoff in o zone Burt weakly turns puck over along the wall…I’m noticing a trend.

If there’s a way to access the archives from when Backstrom played in his first development game at Kettler, you’d see we were saying almost the same thing about him. Invisible, not impressive, should have dominated, etc. By the third game, he was showing his stuff. Keep in mind, Johansson’s use to playing on a bigger ice surface. I bet by the third game, he’s a totally different player.
one of the awesome things about CI is the easy to access archives. Here’s archive from the week of the 2007 development camp.

Interestingly BB has a similar recollection of Backstrom as quoted at CI.
I also found this interesting about forechecking responsibilities. Hmm, adjustment time for Mackan.
“I just talked to him,” Coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We’re going to have to get [him] accustomed to the North American game because in the Swedish game, the centers don’t forecheck. So it’s hard to become an offensive player if you’re going and slam on the brakes to be the third guy high. He said he found it difficult.”
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."
by capsyoungguns on Jul 14, 2010 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I had that thought as well. He was very defensive in the WJC and that’s not a bad thing. It’s harder to teach a guy defense than offense. He has the skill, and now he has the defensive conscience to match. Not a bad deal. I’d still like to see him be more assertive against such weak competition.
Deo ac Fehritati.
White has tied it 3-3 eary in third. First goal of period was a snipe by Lowery…Herbert made a nice pass on quick 2 on 1 to MacLeod, who walked in alone and backhanded it.

I know right! Not like Gleason could have just stood and taken the hit, though. Trying to dodge a hit is playing with fire if you move too late.

Ovechkin got suspended because he got two game misconducts in either sequential or three games. It had nothing to do with the fact that Gleason’s a slow mother fucker. The hit wasn’t even necessarily dirty, and while Ovechkin’s knee was out, it wouldn’t have hit Gleason without the feeble dodge attempt. If Ovechkin hadn’t been ejected two games earlier, it’s 2 minutes for kneeing, and the stories over. And yeah, he was wreckless.
You missed my point. There’s a reason you learn how to take a hit. And hockey is played at two hundred beats a minute, and I’m not trying to excuse Ovechkin from being wreckless, or even borderline dirty at times, but all I said was that if you try and dodge a hit and you aren’t quick enough to get out of the way, you’re asking for trouble, especially at open ice.

Yes, I do remember the rabid discussion (elsewhere of course) about how the 2 game suspension only gave Ovi time to heal his knee and how blatantly unfair that was (cue eye-roll). Loved the behind-the-scenes Verizon video.

Final thoughts:
—Kuznetsov was a beast. Very shifty, very skilled, easily the most impressive guy on the ice today. Impossible to say if he’s NHL ready now, given his competition level, but it’s clear to see he’ll be there one day. Probably soon too.
—Cullen impressed me too, did a lot of things right.
—When Finley dropped Miskovic you could instntly tell it was a big time collision that would at least shake Miskovic up. I actually thought he might have hit him high and gave him a head injury, but that wasn’t the case. As I said initially, it was at least unnecessary hit, especially for a summer camp.
—Della Rovere was physical, and stirring the pot too. Pisano drove to the goalie in the 3rd, knocked him over. A lot of people got in Pisano’s face (this was after the fight too) but SDR got right in the taller guy’s face after everyone else did and kept barking at him and the two exchanged words for a long time. That was pretty funny.
—Galiev and Kuznetsov (on opposite teams) were messing around with one another, each miming that they were about to drop the gloves and go as both teams filed off at the very end. Also funny to watch them be light-hearted and mess around; Galiev was even throwing some Semin-esque “punches” in the air.
—The FA invite kid Andy Miele caught my eye a couple of times too. He’s smallish but he could really wheel with the puck.
—That Herbert can fly too and he scored a goal and had an assist, showed some good touch too. Impressive day for him.
For the not so good….
—I think Burt definitely killed the Johansson/Galiev line. He was constantly turning over, misplaying or otherwise botching the puck almost every time he touched it. He can skate pretty good and maybe just had a bad day, but he looked like an anchor out there.
—Eakin didn’t really stand out and didn’t create anything; I was watching with high hopes that he might make some things happen, given his skill but it didn’t look like he created enough space to generate anything.
—Orlov looked really, really bad on Alexander’s game tying goal in the dying minutes of the game. He got deked to holy hell and even fell over, letting an unknown guy just walk it right in. That surprised me. He wasn’t bad all day long, but that certainly was a glaring mistake at the absolute wrong time.
—The goalies did fine I thought. They didn’t have to be too great but they were pretty solid. I didn’t really zone in at on them though, and it was tough to tell who was who. I did think Graubner played pretty well though.
Most the other guys didn’t jump out at me one way or the other. Overall the play was kinda of sloppy and disjointed — it is summer probably not the best of ice but there wasn’t too much flow or great scoring chances. Easy to tell that they’re not really used to playing with each other.

I just have to disagree on the Finley hit. The rest, total agreement, but he didn’t exactly line the guy up and stride with prejudice. He didn’t stride in, and he didn’t try and hit him hard – it was just an awkward collision. Even if he was going full throttle on the hit, if he makes it in the NHL or even the AHL, that’s how it’s going to be.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
As I said, I didn’t have the best angle on it, so I’l defer to you. It just felt to me like Finley had bad intentions on that play and he definitely stepped up and into the hit.
Plus the fact it’s your own team’s prospect camp in summer has to rub you the wrong way too. It wasn’t as if Miskovic was anywhere close to having a scoring chance, it was unnecessary.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
There’s risks every time you suit up. Necessary or not, you have to know how to take a hit, and while he could have let up, everyone else was playing at full speed, and it’d be bullshit to tell him not to (But in hindsight would have been smart).
I get what you’re saying, and yeah, I agree it blows, but it looked like it was just a shitty chain of events. Also, having heard Miskovic say it’s just a sprain probably changes how I feel about it some.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I didn’t see it, but it’s hard to fault Finley too much if it would have been a clean hit. He knows why he’s here and he knows how he has to play if he’s going to make it. If Finley isn’t out here hitting and fighting he’s not going to be in the organization much longer. As long as he wasn’t taking advantage of Miskovic or throwing an outright dirty hit I can live with it. Hopefully Miskovic has time to heal and get in shape for Rookie Camp and Training Camp.
Deo ac Fehritati.
WM and RB may be OK with it, and that’s fine, but the circumstances make it bad. Finley sought the hit out, stepped up and delievered it. Wasn’t like he let the play come to him and just did his job, he actually went out of his way to crush somebody.
I think that’s why it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
We (WM, RB, and I) were right in front of the hit, front row or second row.

That makes sense. You, of all people, know I hate it when D run out of position looking for a hit. I didn’t see it so I can’t comment definitively, I just think that Finley is in a spot where he needs to be playing an aggressive physical game. He’s not out there bullying a smaller player or destroying a guy after an icing call so it’s not as offensive as some of the other prospect camp friendly fire.
Deo ac Fehritati.
I don’t mind if a guy goes out of his way to crush a guy if he doesn’t miss, and he’s not out for blood. Was it necessary? No. Effective? Yeah, and it would have been even if Miskovic hadn’t been hurt. The puck went pretty much straight to Orlov, I thought, and it was blown dead pretty quick, so dunno what would have happened.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Probably, the way he played today. It was pretty upsetting, especially since I shared an elevator ride with him before the scrimmage.

I’ve thought more about it, and I’m kind of thinking I came off dickholish. Shocker, I know.
But more to the point, I’m thinking I agree with it’s full contact or it’s not, and I can agree that it’s a hit that probably doesn’t need to be made. But the reasons why are many, with the biggest being that the guy’s trying to make an NHL roster at some point (Hopefully, not this year).
Do you justify the fight afterwards? In a fight, you’re intentionally trying to punch someone and deal some damage. Pisano did it likely to follow what in his mind was a breach of hockey code. Finley answered the challenge, and fought back. But we know guys get hurt in fights all the time.
It might have been stupid, it might have been silly, but both Orlov and Finley seemed to be comfortable with the other skating off to try some offensive play or to make a hit – and Orlov wasn’t covering as well as he could. I’m more pissed off about Finley’s boarding penalty than I am the hit on Miskovic. I’m more upset about the injury, but the boarding penalty…dunno why he hit TWO guys from behind like that simultaneously (Or how).
Bottom line of this bantering rant? He did what he is supposed to do. And it’s a shame it hurt Miskovic, but that’s hockey. I mean, cause people don’t love a defenseman who can crush a guy at the blue line.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
The fight is justifiable because it was an even matchup and if anything the guy that was the aggressor was at a disadvantage. Both those guys know that a willingness/eagerness to fight is going to be their path forward, so I don’t mind them showing it.
I don’t know anything about the boarding PIM, what happened?
Deo ac Fehritati.
To me, it just looked like a clusterfuck, where Finley went for a hit on Miele(I think?) and Alexander got in his way and he took both of them to the boards and they fell awkwardly. It was a weird pile up, and I didn’t see it too well, but when all three fell like that it kind of frustrated me that Finley was in the middle of it.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I adore Della Rovere, he doesn’t seem to let anyone intimidate him. we need someone to mix it up on the ice.

Nice piece of work Hooks, like brooks Orpik of Boston College fame…
But what did you think of Carrier, Stevenson, Flemming, Wey?
I know it is always tough to notice defensemen unless they shine or make mistakes but always interested in opinions about this group.
Carrier looked pretty damn good from my view. He was decent from what I saw in his own zone, and he had two or three nice outlet passes (including the one that sprung Galiev). I didn’t notice much of Stevenson or Flemming, but Wey’s skating looked decent to me at least once.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
To be honest I didn’t notice Carrier, but I believe he could have had his moments, I wasn’t really looking for him.
Wey had a couple good moments, shouldering off some people and using his size and skating well.
I thought Stevenson was a little heavy footed, but he never got exposed or burned so I was mildly impressed with his overall ability. Not a standout, but that’s not his style.
Flemming I noticed moved the puck pretty well a couple of times in his own zone, but it was the standard basic plays. He didn’t really get on my radar that much for good or bad reasons.
Nice piece of work Hooks, like brooks Orpik of Boston College fame…
Ahh, you see what I did there.

Yeah, I mean, it seems I’ve been doing nothing but defend Finley, but outside of a couple of poke checks, a couple of hits, and running down Galiev from behind on that breakaway, he really wasn’t superb or anything. Average at best, but it does look like he’s starting to use his size to his advantage. I haven’t seen enough that makes me think he’ll be anything more than a tall John Erskine who hates lawnmowers.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
Hooks:
Agree on your assessment of Kuznetsov, Cullen, and Orlov, and especially with your observations on the Burt/Johansson/Galiev line…absolutely no chemistry; out of sync the entire scrimmage and mostly due to Burt’s manos de piedra. I was pleasantly surprised with Herbert. He reminded me a bit of a Matty…smallish, but quick as hell and always buzzing about.
Disagree with you on Finley and a bit on Eakin. Either it’s a full contact scrimmage or not. The hit was definitely not dirty and was nothing out of the ordinary although the result wasn’t. Finley stepped up and caught him pretty good. In fact, both guys went flying in different directions to the ice. It’s unfortunate, but simply a product of the difference in weight between the players. By the way, Orlov did the same thing earlier in the game, but he obviously isn’t going to destroy anyone. Eakin did not impress, but I saw glimmers of good play. He obviously has a pretty good head for the game, although similar to Mackan, seemed to be lacking good chemistry with his linemates. He is pretty feisty too.
Thanks for the nice words..
Fair enough, maybe my feelings on Finley/Miskovic are wrong. I don’t think it would have been a penalty or a bad play in a regular season game, but I don’t think it’s good form to step into a guy when you’re in the same organization.
If the play came to Finley and he made that check, I think I’d be in your position — fair is fair, it’s a tough sport. But in July there’s no need to seek out a teammate for a big hit like that, IMO. I’m sure Finley wasn’t looking to injure him, but that’s how it worked out. No big deal in the grand scheme of things, just thought it didn’t have to happen.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Oh, it was nothing like that hit. Finley took him to the boards, for one, and while you could argue he was moving up, he was also eliminating his man from going to the inside, and the guy ran out of space. Finley never left his side of the ice. Yeah, it was rough, but it wasn’t as blatant as that.
"Don't mind WM...he's an all-around jerk."
I more meant the “it’s ok in the regular season, but in exhibition you need to tone it down” aspect. Not necessarily the specifics of the hit.

Nice summation. You noticed a great deal. I kept most of my focus on just a few players.
I agree with your assessment that the Mackan/Galiev/Burt line wasn’t clicking, and think that you’re right that Burt was part of the problem. He was still fast but somehow his passes were off. To me Mackan looked frustrated—seemed to put himself in good position to receive a pass, but it either got broken up or wasn’t passed cleanly. Galiev looked uneven to me—good with the puck many times but I got the feeling that he was trying to find that balance between the contact/speed and moving the puck with only mixed success.
The Kunetsov line was sharp and very in sync. In general the red team had a more balanced team talent-wise. The white team was much more uneven in the talent department. Pisano looked like a slower Finley to me. I really don’t know much about either of them, but when they faced off I thought they were both trying out for the enforcer role—my least favorite aspect of the game. I was sitting in the same area but only saw the collision as it happened so i have no idea about intent vs accident. I’m glad it’s only a sprain.
