Wednesday Caps Clips: Development Camp Day Three
Your savory breakfast links:
- Today's Development Camp sessions ("on-ice skating testing - not drills with pucks like previous practices") are at 9:45 (Group A) and 11:15 (Group B), followed by an intrasquad scrimmage at 3:15. Camp coverage from the past 24 hours:
- Marcus Johansson thinks he's ready to be the Caps' second-line center. [WaPo StC]
- Cody Eakin had another good day and is well on his way. [McNally]
- New guys Caleb Herbert and Dustin Stevenson are holding their own in a camp loaded with more seasoned players. [Dump 'n Chase]
- Quirky Braden Holtby is quirky. And awesome. [Puck Daddy, RtR, CI]
- Like physical blueliners? Patrick Wey could be your man. [Masisak, Caps Today]
- Speaking of physical blueliners, Joe Finley sends a postcard from camp. [OFB]
- Trevor Bruess wants to be a Cap. Like, now. [Caps Today]
- A look - literally and figuratively - at Evgeny Kuznetsov. [Caps Snaps]
- Free agent invitee Chris Bond is blogging from camp. Awesome. [BONDO'S BLOG]
- Caps Assistant Coach Bob Woods' son Brendan is trying to make a name for himself. [Patriot-News]
- Free agent invitee Andy Miele has caught the eye of at least one onlooker. [RtR]
- A couple of Latvians are in camp... wonder how that happened. [RMNB]
- The kids took a boat tour of the town. [Caps365 (video)]
- How to identify the guys in Group A. [Punch in the Face]
- Pictures! [Caps In Pictures (Group A, Group B), Caps Snaps (Group A), mike.rannells' Flickr (Group A, Group B)]
- Additional (superb) coverage. [Peerless, RMNB, FFODC (Group A, Group B, wrap), Red Line Station, RtR, The Hockey Chronicles]
- Marcus Johansson thinks he's ready to be the Caps' second-line center. [WaPo StC]
- A trio of former Caps make the "best of what's left" list of free agents. Wonder if Eric Belanger is still set on that three-to-four-year deal... [LeBrun]
- The Southeast Division (with the exception of the 'Canes and the already sky-high Caps) is trending up. [CBSSports]
- At his current pace, Alex Ovechkin will break the all-time shots on goal mark when he's 34-years-old... and still playing out his current contract. [NHL]
- Oh, and Ovi's new girlfriend is a supermodel. Of course she is. [Alex Ovetjkin]
- A closer look at AO's gear... and his foot? [Alex Ovetjkin]
- Speaking of gear, the Caps will be selling plenty of it on Saturday. Here's a take on what you might hope to find. [Jumping the Glass]
- The NHL doesn't really have any George Steinbrenner's... but The Boss and the Caps' top cheese do share some similarities. [PHT]
- The Caps have a couple of job openings. Well, in addition to second-line center. [HockeyJobs, HockeyJobs]
- Vote Weagle. [icethetics]
- The Bears' 2010-11 grid is out, and features ten games against a loaded Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins team, guaranteeing that the kids have a healthy hatred of flightless foul by the time the reach The Show. [Patriot-News, Bears]
- The inaugural "Pro Hockey Celebrity Pheasant Hunt" might be a little short on "celebrity," but it does include former Cap Dave Christian. [Hockey News Update]

The Caps have a couple of job openings...
Responsibilities:
• Improve year over year fan satisfaction, retention rates, and associated revenue goals with assigned account base
The Caps had fewer than 200 STH’s not renew their plans (about 98 percent renewal). How in heaven’s name do you “improve” on that? Hold the waverers at gunpoint?

I see that most clubs have openings in Ticket Sales/Marketing area. That must be a high turnover job. Either the pay must suck, the hours are too long, or they have piss poor managers. I would say for most clubs it is a combination of all of them.
Maybe...
but like most careers you’ve got to start on the bottom and move on to bigger and better things, which I bet also plays a large part.
I also don’t know how much opportunity there is for advancement in these jobs. Certain reps that we deal with professionally are constantly turning over for either that reason, or promotion. From the purchaser perspective, it stinks to always have to be introduced to someone new.

Ticket rep jobs are like other sales jobs. High turnover, low pay unless you are really good at selling, and very little chance for advancement.

Probably pretty easy stuff today. Morning stuff is skating tests, right? Who can’t stay on their feet.
Afternoon scrimmage is what I imagine most will be interested in. In their first head to head action, who shines and who looks like they might as well go home.

This time of year is always interesting, getting to know players that were drafted that we haven’t seen before, guys that have never been heard of before trying to stick with a team in what is basically a tryout, and just all kinds of fun stories.
What has really caught my eye this year is the players blogging. All kidding aside about Finley, awesome that OFB has him making a post daily. Same with Chris Bond. Gives us a little insight into the life and challenges that these guys face.
That of course got my mind wandering in different directions, and was wondering how cool it would be to have a pro player actually blog his season with the caps. Then I remembered, it’s kind of been done, by NPR radio two years ago with Laich and Alzner. What I remembered most about that though, was that an entire season of recorded stories was reduced to like 5 minutes of snippets across 5 radio news stories. It would be really neat if someone could get their hands on the entire library of recordings.
Dan Dun has also been tweeting under the @washcaps handle (i don’t think i saw it included above)
Because now I can justify browsing and commenting during the work day with the argument that I am promoting my business.

I really like Kuznetzov’s attitude in the article on him. Wanting to learn English and wanting to play with the best is always a good sign. But I particularly like that’ he’s helping out the other Russians; it, to me, shows a level of leadership and comaraderie that is always good to have on a team/

And it is pretty hardcore when you go back and look at it. In the space of 5 minutes you have Barber driving a guy’s head into the boards from behind, a Soviet player taking a shot to the face, and Ed Van Impe running over Kharlamov straight out of the box. All in the first period!!!!!!
I can’t really blame the Russians in retrospect for wanting to leave the ice, especially after they got hit with that delay of game penalty.

It was an exhibition game in which the other team was clearly out to injure them and the ref was showing no interest in protecting them. Why should they stay? The red meat people will say “stick up for yourself” but I’m pretty sure the USSR was under the impression that they were showing up to a hockey game. Really a pathetic display and it should be a mark of shame for North American hockey rather than a mark of pride. It’s also been used as one of the cornerstone pieces of evidence that Russians are soft and it’s just absurd. Some Russians can be soft, but not because of that.

actually, I saw the soviet gymnastics team compete at 1991 world, which was the last time they competed as Soviets. Of course, being that it was September, no one, least of all me, had any clue that would be the last time we’d see the Soviet flag raised. Looking back, it’s pretty damn cool to have seen that. (and boy did we see the Soviet flag raised a lot that week!)

Peter Forsberg’s Swedish shoe company, which apparently makes Croc knockoffs, is closing. (s/t Kukla).
I had two thoughts on this:
1) There is no way that, with his injury history, I would ever, ever, ever buy something remotely related to feet that was endorsed by Peter Forsberg.
2) There are croc knockoffs? The originals were bad enough.

I’d buy them just for the name. “Foppatofflan” sounds awesome.

The more I read about Kuznetsov, the more I want to pat GMGM on the back for making this pick. I may be getting my hopes up a little early, but I think we could have yet another star on our hands. The skill is obviously there, but even in that short Caps Snaps piece he just sounds like he has the perfect mentality. The kid WANTS it, and I think we can always use more of that.
Eat, drink, and be merry! And then drink some more.
Kovalchuk should talk to Kuznutz before he bolts for the KHL. It’s not just about money.
So far, little considerations have impressed him. At the Caps development camp the staff has delivered his uniform and equipment to his spot in the locker room. "I have never seen anything like that in Russia. There you just go by yourself and get everything by yourself. So this is kind of unusual for me."

Did I not call that yesterday in Caps Clips? Playing in MON is going to get that guy a ton of hype for Calder. Ultimately I bet it goes to a forward, but I can’t say I’m surprised at this at all.
Disagree. It’s hard to know who is going to be ready and do what, but Carlson is more well-rounded at this point. It’s too early to really say what Gudbranson/Fowler/Gormley are capable of in their first year, and then there are always sleepers. Subban is going to have the benefit of MON’s long run, but I think his flaws tended to be overlooked because of his flair and the surprise that he was even playing in the NHL at that point.

I’ll admit that he did better than I expected, but he’s got a long ways to go in his own end. We’ll see if Subban gets the Mike Green treatment on his defensive flaws or if the MON media manages to overlook that detail. He also had the element of surprise and his little backhand escape curls won’t work forever. Malkin started to anticipate them and abuse him and then he was a non-factor in the PHI series. The guy’s good, but that jersey is driving the discussion, not his actual play.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
He was decent at times, scary at others – I think he’s going to get a lot of hype for the reason you pointed out. He’s a pretty good Montreal prospect, the best one they’ve seen since Carey Price (and we see how that’s going), so he’s going to garner a lot of attention. But agree, I think he’s got a lot further to go before he’s at the same level as Carlson.
For a rookie with only a couple games, Subban looked good. I just hope Montreal doesn’t put him under the pressure they applied to Price. It’s a great way to ruin a good player.

"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Fun (and slightly random) fact: Ovechkin is the only #1 pick in over a decade to win the Calder Trophy, and just one of 4 to do so in the last 30 years (Berard, Lemieux, Hawerchuk).
Why am I not surprised. He’s our record buster.
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

…crap, I didn’t even think to check his because for some reason I’d convinced myself he was taken 2nd or 3rd. Thanks.
One other guy to look out for next year: Jamie McBain. He’s going to be playing on a terrible Carolina team without much offensive skill up front other than Eric Staal, but he still managed to put up 10 points in 14 games last year. The guy’s got some definite potential.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
I bet Cam Fowler has a better season.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
I don’t know much about Fowler aside from watching him during the championship game at the WJC. I could see him having a better year because he’s going to step on to a team with a good deal more talent whose defense has just been decimated by retirement.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
I’m a huge Fowler fan and I am going to taunt the Rags and Canes for years for passing him. Fowler surely has more developing to do, but I bet he plays in the NHL next season.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
About 9 teams to taunt for that. I still can’t believe he fell from the 3rd spot, much less that many choices. I have to believe there was something personal that scared teams off.

by Carl Putnam on Jul 14, 2010 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions
I can’t taunt anyone else as hard as NYR and CAR. They took guys with skating flaws when they need help on D. NYI needed a W, so I can see Nino as a good pick. ATL has several good young D, and could use help up front, so Burmistrov made sense (and I called it!). TBL’s pick is a gamble, so they may end up regretting it as well.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
The really baffling one is Columbus passing on him. They need a mobile, puck-moving D-man badly, and they passed on Fowler and Gormley to draft yet another center, with the hope that this one will be the guy who turns Rick Nash into a 100-point player.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
Good one, I forgot to mention that. I think Nino drove that line and Johnsen really benefited from that. I don’t think he’s going to be the 1C they thought they were getting. Fowler definitely would have been a good fit, as would Gormley. Letting either of those guys fall to 12/13 is pretty ridiculous.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
Niederriter plus Tavares could be one scary line in a couple of years. And if some other pieces of their young, offensive talent put it together (e.g. Josh Bailey, Kirill Kabanov) they could be a pretty scary team up front.
"Ovechkin, what is good in life?"
"To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their captain."
I’m a huge fan of Nino. I though he owned the WJC this past year. However, I’m a huge believer in taking the best talent available when drafting in any sport. The more talent you have in your system the better. If you wind up over talented at one position it allows you to trade for quality at another position. I find it hard to believe Fowler wasn’t the 3rd or at worst 6th best player in the draft.

You know that in general I agree with you about drafting the best player available. The one exception is when you are drafting in the lotto area and you have two prospects of equal value, then it’s ok to draft for need. An example would be Hedman or Tavares for NYI last year.
You could argue that Fowler/Gormley are clearly above Nino, and that might be fair. I’m not sure it’s conclusive but that would be a reason to pass on Nino. Alternatively, you could argue that the Isles actually need D more than F, so they should have taken Fowler/Gormley. Ultimately I think it was a close enough call that it wasn’t a terrible choice for NYI.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
I’m fine when guys are of equal value going with need. I’m even fine making an exception because of a complete dearth in an organization at one spot or a guy has serious personal reg flags.
I don’t think the Isles chose poorly because I really like Nino. I think he’s going to be a good NHL player. He will fit in well on that team. The Isles are getting hard to dislike because they keep drafting guys I like (Okposo & Niedereitter), plus I’m a member of the Mark Streit Fan Club.
If it was just 2-3 teams that passed over Fowler it wouldn’t have struck me as that odd. The amount of teams who did makes me think there may be a personal/character issue.
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich
I agree with all that. I think the Rags reached for McIlrath because of a perceived need for a BCCD. CBJ thought they needed a 1C so they reached. CAR hates taking D in the first round and wanted young scoring so they reached for a guy with skating issues. Suckers.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
What are the odds McIlrath will wind up a Milwaukee Admiral 5 years from now?
"You ever use smelling salts, every time you type a bad blog?" Brooks Laich

In a fleeting defense of McIlrath, he’s a really articulate and good attitude-d kid. A Preds blogger interviewed him for their podcast and I was most impressed with his interview of about five other prospects (Etem, McFarland, Howden, Sheahan.)

Without listening to those talking heads, I’d guess there are a number of rookie dmen that have the potential to have standout rookie seasons that they left out of the conversation.
Subban and Carlson both have earned accolades and will have pressure on them next season on their respective teams. Of note, they were the 2 rookie dmen named to the AHL rookie team, but Subban was also named to the AHL end of year first team.
There were others under consideration, too, including Alzner and Carlson and the 2 named to the second team, but an honor he was given so it’s not unexpected or wrong to see his name in this type of discussion.
While I agree his performance in the playoffs for Montreal and playing in Canada (Hamilton and Montreal) raises the spotlight and garners him more attention and more pressure, it isn’t only because of this that his name is being brought up. The type of game he plays, he is going to have his ups and downs as is the norm and expected for any of the rookie dmen in the discussion, should be fun to watch as the season progresses to see how they all do.

I have no idea what happened at the camp today, I just think it is hilarious how hard it looks like he is concentrating on not falling down in that picture.

The Minnesota Wild are about to announce they have signed … Joel Broda. To a three year ELC. And he is at their prospect camp.
So much for Salzburg, I guess.

The Wild under Fletcher has been trying to replenish their depth, a smart organization for a FA prospect to align with at this time.
Haven’t looked lately at an updated Min/Houston roster lately, but he could start on Houston’s roster depending on who they sign or could start in the E.
Tony Hrkac plays for Houston??!! Good heavens he must be a thousand years old…

Not as old as Chelios, but then who is :)
He coaches college hockey in Wisconson and for each of the last 2 seasons has signed on with Houston late in the season. I believe there was some rltp. with the Houston coaching staff based on the articles published in 2009 when he first returned.
Houston has a new coaching staff this season, however.
Yeah they just hired Sydor.

He was added to their camp roster right before camp started.
And yes, Russo just tweeted that he signed his 3 year ELC. Congrats and good luck to him with the Wild.
Odd observation
Looking through Caps Snaps, DeSimone is the only player I see wearing a helmet that isn’t made by Reebok or CCM (he is wearing a Bauer 5100 or something similar). I wonder why that is? The majority of the players seem to be wearing either 6K or 8K Reebok lids, with what look like a few CCM Vector 10s mixed in.
I am a hockey fan first, and a Caps fan second.
I don’t know why the players choose those helmets, but does UNH have team equipment that players have to use? What about Burke? He’s UNH also, right?
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
I’m assuming the Caps can’t provide him with equipment per NCAA rules.

Not to keep. They might be able to give him temporary equipment if it was necessary.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
unless the rules have changed, they can probably sell him the equipment “used” after camp is over. it’s a fairly common practice in NCAA programs.

Ah, that makes some sense I guess. I don’t know why it would be necessary, but there’s the loophole. UNH is going to buy them everything they need and none of the NCAA guys are anywhere close to needing Caps gear yet.

if they don’t sell to him (for, like, a dollar per glove) or charge him for using it during camp, it’s probably some NCAA violation. can’t let these kids drink water and not charge them for it! First it’s water, next thing you know the Caps are buying him a car and condo.

I was wondering if in addition to making the kids pay their own way, they had to charge them for the training. After all, it does have value, and heaven forbid a kid get a gift of any kind. As if the Caps were alumni boosters.

possibly. to make things easier, that Caps might charge a single “fee” for development camp that includes hotel, food, equipment, etc.

Keep in mind, they can’t sell it to him at below market rates either. I suspect they “loan” him a pair of gloves, helmet, pants, etc. and if he chooses not to buy them (presumably at the deeply discounted cost that the team pays for the equipment) then they’ll be on the tables on Saturday at the equipment sale.

Do keep in mind that the equipment sale is during the scrimmage, so they won’t be done with the equipment yet. Maybe it will be there next year.

But even if they “loan” him equipment wouldn’t that constitute an illegal benefit? I’m sure he’s been well briefed by his compliance officer though.

From what I’m reading in the NCAA regs, loaning him equipment for use at camp wouldn’t violate the amateurism rules.
On the other hand, if a tryout is more than 48 hours, the athlete has to pay for his own transportation home.
In any case, the rules are very vague, and littered with exceptions.

His red, white and blue gloves don’t strike me as a good fit for UNH, and his helmet has a Caps logo.

Just FYI, I’m ditching work to attend this afternoon’s scrimmage and I will most likely be all over Twitter – either with updates and attempts at analysis or snark and attempts at humor. So if you want to and aren’t already, feel free to follow me here.
Don’t worry, I won’t be offended if you follow just for today and then unfollow right after.
…I might cry, of course, but not in front of others.

Bit of a discussion over at Second City Hockey – in a vacuum, would you take Ryan Suter or Brent Seabrook? (not necessarily on the Caps, just in general)

Suter, hands down. Better skater, better with the puck, better all around.

Won’t get any argument out of me, obviously. I’d come much, much sooner choosing Keith over Weber than Seabrook over Suter, if that makes sense. Anyway, just trying to get an objective opinion.

not much of one
It pains me to say it, but in the proverbial vacuum I’d take Keith over Weber. The disagreement would come in if you’re talking about pairing Keith with Suter. That wouldn’t work as well as Weber.

In fairness, I’m the same guy who thought Rafalski/Suter wouldn’t work well. So there’s that.

Ha. Turns out they were a beast. If you take two awesome D, they can usually make it work.
But I agree that Suter/Rafalski doesn’t sound like it should be great on first impression.

Easily the best pairing in the tournament, which is impressive considering Keith/Doughty and Weber/Niedermayer.

Suter, easily. More and tougher minutes with worse teammates. You can’t just ignore the contributions of the forwards, either, the Hawks were ridiculously loaded with players like Bolland, Hossa, Toews, Sharp, etc.
Duncan Keith is the best out of the four players being debated, but Weber/Suter are 2/3 (I’d take Suter before Weber, but it’s by a hair), Seabrook is a pretty clear 4th in my eyes.
That said, they’re all very high caliber defensemen who any team would gladly take in its top pair.

Asked if the Caps are “done” as far as free agent shopping, GM George McPhee nodded and said, “Yes.”
Reminds me of a famous tweet from the 19th century:
Reached on Elba and asked if he is “done” attempting to conquer Europe, Napoleon nodded and said, “Oui.”
Atta dinnin stick a who!
Yeah, I’m not buying that for a second. Until all the good players that could fit a need are signed, he’s still kicking tires.
Plus, given Mackan’s non-dominant performance today, I’d say the “Mackan for 2C” train probably has to pump the breaks.
Deo ac Fehritati.
I guess. Is it really in McPhee’s interests to straight up lie? It’s one thing to be coy but who would even take anything he says seriously, ever, if he goes out and signs Willie Mitchell after saying this? Not saying he’s done, but if he isn’t then this is a strange negotiating tactic.
Maybe it’s not a negotiating tactic. I think he’s just pathologically private. He’s not going to negotiate in public, he’s not going to tip his hand to the media, he’s just going to go about his business and do his job quietly. When he makes a move you’ll hear about it, but he’s not trying to publicize that stuff. I listened to an interview with him where he was talking about discussing players with the media and he said that he doesn’t do that, or negotiate in the media, because there is no upside. You can get burned by saying things to the media, but when has it ever helped? I think the same thing applies here. What does he gain by saying “yeah we are still looking”? None really. It may not hurt to go with the other party line, “if there is a deal that makes sense we’ll do it” but considering there is literally no upside to answering the question I’m not surprised, or convinced.
Deo ac Fehritati.
