Sunday Caps Clips
Your savory summer Sunday brunch links:
- Awesome Nicklas Backstrom is awesome. [Un-awesome Googletranslate version of Dala-Demokraten article (link h/t the tireless Ice Warrior)]
- Ten NHL teams still need one significant piece. The Capitals, of course, require a ____________. [Puck Daddy]
- Ten top UFAs are looking for a home, and a paycheck. Jose Theodore makes the list. Boo. [The Hockey News]
- Crystal balling Semyon Varlamov's sweater swap. [Capitals Gains]
- Just for fun, you can watch World Cup Ovi in another installment of the popular Russian animated show "Mult Lichnosti" (Animated Personality). If someone wants to add some translation, that would be great, but whiny, pouting, metric football star Andrei Arshavin comes thru loud and clear in any language. As does Hillary Clinton's delicate pas de quatre with President Obama, Nicolas Sarkozy, and Silvio Berlusconi. [Mult Lichostni via YouTube]
- Happy 54th birthday to Jorgen Pettersson, happy 44th birthday to Bob Joyce, and a sad stick-tap to the memory of Gaetan Duchesne, who would have turned 48 today.
- And finally, on July 11, 2001, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded right wing Jaromir Jagr and defenseman Frantisek Kucera to the Washington Capitals for Kris Beech, center Michal Sivek , defenseman Ross Lupaschuk and future considerations. Nine years on, and the wounds have yet to heal. Feel free to speculate as to the 'future considerations' in comments.

Does his shirt really say “Electrical and plumbing?” Oy. Backis, please don’t let the Russians dress you any more.

Now if they only made one that said “wife” instead. What a great gag gift for my lovely husband who is still trying to figure out how I passed him on the Caps/hockey obsession meter. Or would it be a gag….hmm!
"I’m very happy to hear the news," Ovechkin said when he heard about Backstrom's longterm contract--"because he’s one of the top centers in the world, one of my best friends and we want to play together for a long time. He’s a guy who wants to stay in one place and be comfortable and win, just like me. We talk all the time about playing together, and we talked after the playoffs about how we can win in Washington."

Must. Buy.
Seriously, this would become a staple in my t-shirt rotation. Particularly when hanging with the guy whose (now-ex) girlfriend wears mine. Hilarity would ensue. =]

I can see all the kids – “Oooooh, a secret guest! Whoever could it be?”
They sure look happy to be there with Nicky-Lars.
I’m secretly a Backstrom fan. Shhh…don’t tell everyone else in Pittsburgh. Just seems like a decent guy, hard worker.
Now, I’m also hoping he winds up with less than 60 points next season, but that’s beside the point. =]

Well they won’t hear it from us, certainly. :0
Though you’re nearly certainly not alone in your secret Backis fandom.
Nick’s a little bit big solid chunk of all right, more than content to let the OV carnival play out around him while he quietly goes out and dominates the ice on every shift.
And, just like Sid, he tried a bit of scoring for himself this year and found that he likes it. Heh.
I think the secret Backis fan club has been quietly growing for a long time. I’ve been faithfully nuts about Mean Lars for a awhile now, and happily invested in a no. 19 jersey. I was sure he was committed to this team. When he signed his ten year extension it was the first time I felt happy since…! My favorite play is still Nicky’s OT goal in the Chicago game.

How does one make a gif anyway? Or enlarge it?
Wow. Someone else out there not watching soccer. All is quiet, both online and in my home (in front of the TV but not me).

no clue on how to make one or enlarging it.
Soccer isn’t really my thing, and for whatever reason, we’re watching yet another Nationals Meltdown on the only TV.

I have the game on, but only half paying attention. It’s not a very good game so far.
And I knew the Nats were down 5-0 before I got back home from the grocery, so not bothering to turn that on.

now 5-1, bases loaded, and Dunn is up to bat….
I was so ridiculously disappointed that the Nats put on a slugging clinic Friday. I didn’t get to yell “LET’S GO CAPPS!” (oh, and now it’s 5-2, bases loaded, Hammer up to bat)

I love the gifs when people post them.
Soccer isn’t my thing either, but the boys are downstairs watching. Or perhaps they have switched to the Nats by now. They went to the game Friday night, and were very happy with the win, that Strasburg needed to get a win for his great play. Made me wonder how much it was like watching Ovi that first season on the Caps, when the team was still bad but it was still fun to watch this kid play.

More gems from Arshavin:
If I had it in my power to introduce a ban on women driving cars and to withdraw all their licences, I would do it without thinking twice.
He was once hit by a car on the way to training, which sent him "ten metres into the air". (Ten metres? How fast was the car going and how the hell did he survive?)
He is also afraid of water – not because of how deep it is, but "the creatures that are maybe hiding in it".
Look at this signature line. Notice the lack of spelling errors and self-whoring?
Along with today being the birthday of several Washington Capitals, it was the birthday of E.B. White of “Charlotte’s Web” and “Stuart Little” fame. (My sister posted that on Facebook.)
I saw the note on 2001 — one more reminder of the fact that it was a very bad year for me.
Rocking the Red since 1975
Maybe GMGM and Ted believe that we are good enough right now to win the SE with the current cast and that the 2C is already on the roster. Not bring anybody onboard via FA that would require multiple years on a contract. Lets face it anybody excepting 1yr probably isn’t that much better than the group we have and would retard the growth on one our players one more year. Not going after older retreads like Modano and Koivu because we’ve already gone down that road.
Saving money to make sure our guys are signed and would go after a rental come the deadline if we really needed a vet for the playoff push.
4th Floor, is next, swimvare, undervare, Eric Fehr...
Can someone tell me a little bit about Gaetan Duchesne? Why is the training camp trophy named after him?
Read up, young’un.

I used to see Gates at the Bowie Pizza Hut, after games, picking up a take-out late dinner with his gorgeous wife/girlfriend, while me and my high school buddies would play video games. He’d occasionally watch us playing Donkey Kong if his order wasn’t quite ready. Rest in peace.

July 11, 2001: Ya-Ya Is a Cap Day
Jez. Nine years ago? Cripes it seems like, well, ninety years ago. John Carlson was 11 years old. (sigh)
Nine years on, and the wounds have yet to heal.
There’s the scab that is Nylander that won’t fall off until next year. AO’s hit on Jagr in the Olympics pretty much healed me. What else is there?
If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.
Actually the jagr trade could have been a blessing in disguise. It was clearly the number one influence for Ted and gmgm to change their strategy. Without that trade the team could have muddled along in mediocrity, decent regular seasons with playoff disappointment but with no bell weather transaction to symbolize where the team had gone wrong. It’s not a stretch to say no jagr=no ovie. The looming lockout helped too.
Just trying to capture the spirit of the thing...

Could just be me, but doesn’t Jagr remind you of a young Eric Lindros with his head down looking at the puck in that .gif? I wonder if the Czech doctors also mis-diagnosed him with a Grade I concussion instead of a Grade II.

Oops on the thread. But related yet hockey relevant, I was listening to a discussion of the pending match (about 2:15) as to whether it would be more of a defensive game, the “expert” was describing slowing down the opponent by clogging up the middle of the field. Too bad I was alone in the car, because I yelled out, “you mean play the trap!”

Random Question
Let’s say Backstrom hadn’t signed his long term deal and went to arbitration. How much do you think he would have gotten? What could the caps have said is wrong with him?
(Thankfully this is a question we don’t have to ask)
What about Semin? THAT would have been interesting.
Only real downside to Backstrom is faceoffs. With Semin, it’s inconsistency and lack of physicality.
And faceoff skills (or permissible cheats) can be relatively easily learned, if field hockey translates in that respect. Semin’s issues seem more diffuse, at least from a spectator’s POV.
The last mosquito that bit me had to check into the Betty Ford Clinic.
Agreed. If you look at Crosby, faceoffs were a weak point of his – but he jumped from 51.3% last season to 55.9% this season. Backstrom showed a slight improvement, but it could still use some work. Maybe Steckel and Gordon could teach him.
Semin though… he has the skills, it seems to be more mental than anything else. And I doubt he’ll ever improve much in his physical game.
I guess they would go with a lack of explosive skating, not elite defensively, mediocre on face offs, and not a great goal scorer. A lot of that is a stretch but it’s all they got.
Sometimes you need a criminal lawyer, sometimes you need a criminal lawyer.
I’d agree with 3 of those – but not goal scoring. He was 13th in the NHL this season. Here’s the thing I noticed though – Backstrom’s stats this season and Crosby’s last season were very similar. Backstrom ‘09-’10 – 33-68-101, 49.9% FO%. Crosby ‘08-’09 – 33-70-103, 51.3%. I’m glad it didn’t go to arbitration.
Luckily, Nick wasn’t arbitration-eligible. You have to have 4 years in the league to file for arbitration.
